while doing detailed (boring) tasks, stay grounded in a higher vision...

George Kao shows how to connect tedious tasks like SEO to a larger purpose through what he calls a "higher-vision framework." He teaches the Standing Exercise Energy Reboot, a two-minute routine pairing physical movements with spiritual words like gratitude, to stay grounded when doing detailed work.

So Elise, you were just asking, how do I stay connected to a higher vision before doing more on-the-ground work? Like your example of, let's say, marketing or SEO, like instead of getting into the weeds of SEO to like see the connections that motivate this particular task and therefore how you can do it more effectively too, right? Yeah. So this is what I call a framework. I think we have multiple frameworks in our business and work. So for example, you know, you help your clients and patients with acne and kind of solving acne for life. So you have a framework for that. I mean, obviously you do. You have a way of thinking about, well, if you want to solve your acne issue, yeah, you need to do this, you need to do that, you need this. But it all connects because it all connects in this way and it all connects to this larger overall, like overall effort is about this or whatever.
Right.
And so I have a framework about business too, and I have a framework about marketing. And well, the fact that you're in my courses means I'm trying to, uh, uh, show you my framework and to see if, see if it's something you wanna just take on. Or I always encourage my students, clients, like, hey, look at my framework and then like modify it for yourself. So that's my question for you. And that's the question of higher vision is like, and you can even step back and look at a larger framework for life. Like, you know, or you can step back and look at a larger framework for, for, for, for work. Like, for example, like when I think of work, my larger framework is joyful productivity, right? And, and even stepping back even further, my larger framework for even joyful productivity is, oh, it's because it allows me to contribute to society and grow myself. And that's the— work is a stage for both genuine personal growth and genuine contribution to humanity. Like, like, like, and then, okay, that's high and lofty, it's inspiring, but then what does that mean then for today? Well, today in this moment, um, yeah, this very moment we're talking, and as I'm sharing these things with you, I'm growing myself by exploring some ideas, but hopefully there's some contribution to those who are watching this. And so So let's now go to the marketing side as an example you gave. So what is your marketing framework? Like, how does SEO, for example, fit into your overall marketing framework? Like, I know I'm putting you on the spot and you didn't prepare for this, but what might you say? Like, how might you inspire your SEO work, for example?
Yeah, I think what's coming up for me is like just connecting with my deeper why, like trying to get, you know, back further into like, why am I doing this? Why do I care about this? Like, what's the furthest, deepest thing back there?
And that inspires you, that energizes you.
Yeah. Yeah. Like anchoring in that place and then moving from there. And it feels like a practice. Yes.
Yes.
Yeah.
Totally. Yeah. I see that. There's possible, there's a possible practice here to do like before you do like SEO, detailed SEO work or something to take a moment and like reconnect in your mind and your heart with the ideal person who's going to benefit from your SEO work. And that's my question for you is like, and this is true even for content creation, right? I mean, content creation's a little bit more obvious. Like when you, like before I make my video, like I close my eyes and like I see my ideal client in my mind's eye and like I feel that connection in my heart and I see my ideal client like just eager and like needing help and like just eager to receive some, any word or any story or any just energetic transmission that will like lift them up for the day and go, wow, that really shifted something for me and I'm feeling more energized to go do XYZ. you know, and the good thing is you have a bunch of, you know, clients, patients, you know, people you work with already that you probably overjoyed to see their transformation. And like, is there one of those clients you can envision even before you do SEO work? It's like, there are thousands of people like this person who are literally looking online, like literally typing in, like And as they're typing in, you can imagine them finding your website and go, this is it, it's my person.
Yeah, thank you, that's really helpful. I, I think what's also coming up for me in addition to that is like this— for me personally, feeling called to maybe set the stage before I dive into work, because I'm someone who can just like get really excited about doing stuff.
Right.
And yeah, kind of opening the space for like meditating or dropping in and connecting with my why before I just like go, because I can just go. Right. Um, yeah, like, and so I'm kind of like, that's kind of what I was curious, like, does George do something like that? Or yeah, um, maybe it's just a space for me to name that that's important. For me.
It is. Yeah. And I, I do, um, I have something I do called the Energy Reboot. I probably said this a million times and you probably heard this a million times. And the Energy Reboot is like a, it, it started out like as a 30-second to 30 to 60-second practice. And that I did like once an hour. And then I'm like, wow, this is so, so good. Why don't I do it more often? And so I started doing it whenever, before I started a project, I would do it, I would do it. And then I'm like, this is so good. Why don't I do it even during the project? So I would then pause, I would end up pausing every like 20 to 30 minutes during my workday to do my energy reboot. And those—
I imagine you have some kind of course on this or some video you record.
Yeah. Joyful Productivity, you know, and there's an energy reboot segment in there. Yeah. But yeah, so I did that for several years. I started doing Energy Reboot, I think in 2017, something like that. And then I did it for a couple years.
Yeah.
And then I modified it, became Energy Reboot 2. And I started doing Energy Reboot 2 for since like 2021 or whatever. And then just recently I modified it again. Well, I did Energy Reboot 3, which was like a, like more of a Anyway, you can read that. There's a blog post on this.
Okay.
And then finally, now I'm doing Energy Reboot 4 for myself. And you can call it whatever. You should find something to call it that you really resonate with.
Sure.
But now what I do is twice an hour, I do what I call Standing Exercise Energy Reboot. Standing Exercise Energy Reboot, which spells SEER, because I'm a little crazy about acronyms. So what I do twice an hour is I get up for 2 minutes and I do— I'm like right now working on my abs and my chest. So I'm like doing standing ab and chest exercises for 2 minutes. But every exercise I do, I call forth a spiritual word that's meaningful for me. And like that word, for example, gratitude or you know, devotion or humility or enjoyment or lightness. Like, these are words that I call in as I do each exercise. And it's cool because I'm not only doing exercise physically, I'm doing exercise spiritually. And it's like an embodied way of doing energy reboot. So I'm, I'm liking my current version the best thus far. And it also keeps me physically healthy. So, um, anyway, just some thoughts for you to play with.
Thank you.
Yeah, I look forward to hearing— I look forward to hearing what you put together for yourself.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Thank you so much.
Thanks, Elise.
Very helpful.
