Tim Jones from Grow Good explains what B Corp consultants do. His firm was B Corp #6 in New Zealand in 2016 and has helped nearly 100 companies through certification. They translate the B Impact Assessment, run kickoff workshops, provide policy templates, and hold clients accountable through the process.
So, Tim Jones, that B Corp bloke, grow good. What do I actually do? That's a great question. I don't think my mum still kind of knows really what I do, but I kind of know what we do. So fundamentally at growgood, the main thrust of our work is helping really cool companies like yours, business owners like you, nailing your B Corp certification. And we do that pretty well. We, we certified as B Corp number six way, way back in 2016 here in Aotearoa, New Zealand. And since then we have become, I mean, it's quite scary. This is my, I call it the Zoom Room. This is, you know, my office based out of my home office here in Christchurch, New Zealand. And we are a global consulting firm that helps companies nail the B Corp journey. We have helped at time of making this video. Close to 100 companies get through the B Corp assessment. We get pretty good results. We have numerous case studies of clients coming to us below the, below the 80 threshold who nailed their certification in the hundreds and the score that they're being verified on is the score that they submitted on. So we're pretty confident that we've got a pretty good package. So a B Corp consultant, what do we actually do? Well, pretty much exactly what it says on the 10. We just help you go through the B Corp assessment to make sure that you understand it and you're maximizing the score that you're rightfully deserving of. The way I kind of explain that is it's kind of like you need to take an exam, but it's an open book exam. However, you've only been told about the exam and it's happening tomorrow and the exam is in Swahili, as is the book that you can take into the exam. So basically we are like a translator who can come into the exam with you and translate this book from Swahili into into English or your preferred language. Probably struggle with anything other than English other than possibly very basic conversational Welsh, which I'm currently trying to learn, and a little bit of French. Yeah. So basically we, where we really help is helping you translate and understand the questions. The, the B Corp impact assessment does not win many if any awards for plain English language. It is a technical assessment and so, you know, we are experts on the assessment. We can guide you through that. The other things that we're really good at is just holding you accountable. It's not uncommon for the B Corp assessment just to drift. It's not the most fun activity to do at the end of your week and Typically, that's when most people kind of, you know, we were going to do it today, and then it drifts. And it drifts. It's Friday. Yeah, we could do the B Corp assessment or we could go and have a beer or go and hang out with some friends or go for a bike ride or a run or whatever. So holding you accountable is a big thing that we're all about. We can help you get through the B Corp journey pretty quickly and pretty effectively. Somewhere typically between three to seven hours, depending on how big and complex your business is. We will get you through the entire assessment, have you all the questions answered, you will know exactly where you stand and you'll be able to click submit on your assessment. We also help with policy documents, templates. There's a whole raft of questions, you know, where if you have the policy, you can claim the points and you might want to have the policy, but if you're small, but typically with the smaller to medium businesses, you just might not know where to go to have that policy. So the three great examples would be a code of ethics and a whistleblower policy for a small to medium business, a breastfeeding in the workplace policy and an ethical marketing policy. Three classic examples that most people are like, wow, that's a really cool thing. I'd love to have that, but I don't have the time to go and make one or I don't have the resources financially to go and get someone to write those for me. So we have a whole suite, a whole shared folder that we share with all our clients so you get access to all of that kind of stuff. The other thing that we're really big on is building community so we have our own community of all our clients that we're working with. When we work with you, we invite you to come and be a part of that, come and learn from others going on the journey, connect with them, share, network, hopefully get some business out of each other, help each other on the journey. So that's kind of what we're all about as a B consultant. Look, if you are even vaguely curious about B Corp, or if you've started the journey and you've stalled or even we've had some clients we've worked with where actually they've gone through the entire assessment. They've got over 80, but they've kind of gone. Actually, can you just check our working. Um, we'd be really just. We're not just quite so sure. A couple of these questions and in pretty much all of those, well, so Far, all of those cases, we've found points that they hadn't found and we've helped them basically smash through the B corp really quickly, really efficiently, but also in a way that brings your team on the journey. We're really dogmatic about starting off any engagement with you with what we call our kickoff session. So we get your entire company, regardless of how many people that is. Everyone comes through a workshop that we run to get everyone up to speed with what is B Corp. Why are you becoming a B Corp? What do you hope to get out of being a B Corp? We try and basically make what can be a pretty dry, boring online self assessment, as fun, as exciting and engaging as we can.
