196. How to pronounce PARTICULARLY
18 Feb 2022 · 0 min
Hadar Shemesh breaks down particularly into five syllables with stress on the second: per-TIC-u-lar-ly. The word has two R sounds and vowel reductions that trip up learners. If Rs are hard, you can drop the first one and say it as par-TIC-u-lar-ly.
Welcome to the Influency Podcast. I'm Hadar, and this is how to Pronounce Friday, where we take a confusing word or word pair. We learn how to pronounce it and how to use it with confidence. Let's get started.
Today, I'd like to talk to you about the word particularly and in particular, how to pronounce it. So let's begin with the first syllable, per, per. It's a p sound and then an r, per. So although there is the vowel, the vowel letter A, it's not pronounced as par, but it's reduced per, per as in perfect or person. Then we shift to the primary stress, T, a strong T sound, and the e as in sit. Since it's the primary stress of the word, it's higher in pitch. Notice that I raised my pitch for it per t. And then it's also longer than the rest of the syllables. Then we shift to k, K, a k sound, then, as in yes or yay and a schwa here. All right? No sound there, although it's spelled. Spelled with a U, particular. And then again a reduced vowel l lur, an l, and then you shift to an R. Ler as in learn particular, and then you end it with Lee, Lee High E the end, particularly. I don't particularly like to practice this word, but I have to. Particularly. Now, if you struggle with the R sound, you can drop the first R in this word and just say particularly. Particularly. That's also totally fine and a little easier. All right. Okay.
