A short pronunciation lesson from the Influency Podcast’s 'How to Pronounce Friday' series by Hadar Shemesh explaining the syllable-by-syllable pronunciation of the word 'quarter'. The episode breaks the word into 'core' + 'ter', explains the vowel quality and the flap T (making the T sound like a D), gives an example sentence, and closes with subscription/promo information.
Welcome to the Influency Podcast. I'm Hadar, and this is how to Pronounce Friday, where we take a confusing word or word pair. We learn how to pronounce it and how to use it with confidence. Let's get started.
Today, I'd like to talk to you about the word quote. Quarter. Quarter. To say this word, let's begin with the first syllable, core. Core. We start with a K sound and then the or, as in four, vowel. Or, to make this vowel, round your lips a little bit, drop your jaw, and the tongue pulls back so it's high in the back. You hear that nice rounded O sound. After you hear the vowel only then bring the tongue up for the r. Cor. Right? You raise the tongue up for the R after you hear the long vowel core. If you bring the tongue up before that, it can sound like this. Cur. Ker. That's a different vowel. You don't want that. So core, all right. As in the word core, the second syllable is basically a t, schwa. R, Ter. Ter. But since this T is between an R vowel and a vowel, it's a flap T. So it sounds more like a D than a T. Quarter. Do you hear that? Quarter. It was a profitable quarter. Quarter. All right, that's it. Okay.
