A short podcast transcript (How to Pronounce Friday segment) in which host Hadar Shemesh teaches the pronunciation of the word "focus." She breaks the word into phonetic parts (F + long O + k + reduced vowel [schwa] + s), notes the primary stress on the first syllable, provides example sentences, and closes with a subscription call-to-action and Instagram handle.
Welcome to the Influency podcast. I'm Hadar and this is how to Pronounce Friday, where we take a confusing word or word pair. We learn how to pronounce it and how to use it with confidence. Let's get started.
How to pronounce the word. Focus. Focus. I often hear this word pronounced as focus or focus. So let's break it down and listen to the subtle nuances in the word. It begins with fo, so it's an F sound. The bottom lip touches the top teeth and then it's a long o as in go fo. So it's not a nupure oh sound, it's a long O vowel. So basically you open your mouth for the O and then you close it towards a W sound. So you really want to visualize this word spelled with W Fo. Kiss. Then you shift to a K sound, a schwa and an S. Kiss. Kiss. Alright, so again, although the letter U is there, it is not pronounced. It's a schwa, it's reduced. Kiss. Focus. And since the first syllable is the primary stress, it's a little higher in pitch. Focus. Let's focus, guys. It's a great focus group. You have to focus. Focus. Alright, that's it. Okay.
