5 Aug 2022 · 2 min
Hadar Shemesh breaks down the pronunciation difference between advice (noun, /s/ sound) and advise (verb, /z/ sound). Learn the stress placement, vowel reduction, and how to use each word correctly with example sentences.
Welcome to the Influency podcast. I'm Hadar, and this is how to Pronounce Friday, where we take a confusing word or word pair, we learn how to pronounce it and how to use it with confidence. Let's get started.
Today, I'd like to talk to you about the two words advice versus advise. Advice, the noun, as in I need an advice from you, and advise, the verb, as in I'd like to advise you on something. They both begin the same, so it's a reduced vowel, a schwa, and then a d sound. So it's not advice or advice. It's. Then the primary stress is different depending on the word. For the noun advice, it's a V sound going to the I as in my vowel diphthong, and then it ends with a s as in sun. An S sound. Advice. I need an advice. The word advice ends with a Z sound, with a Z as in V zebra. Advise. It's a voiced sound versus a voiceless S. Advise. I'd like to advise you on something. Okay. Do you hear the difference? Advice versus advise. All right. Simple.
Okay. That was your how to Pronounce Friday episode. I hope you enjoyed it.
