He Was Supposed to Be on Meds for LIFE… Until God Healed Him | with special guest Dayne Kamela
3 Nov 2025 · 27 min
Dayne Kamela was diagnosed with bipolar I disorder at 22 and prescribed lifelong medication after a manic episode and hospitalization. Within weeks of prayer and a church laying on of hands, he stopped taking medication and says he's been healed for a decade. He argues the church treats mental illness as a last resort for prayer instead of a first response.

All right, guys. Sometimes you think you have everything right, and then something just blows up in your face. And what you're going to hear today, what you're going to watch today, if you're watching it, is so powerful because we had done this interview, lost the recording. So I am just assuming that when spiritual forces like that are at play, that there is something that is about to be birthed that is so big. So if you're listening, if you're watching, tune out everything else and stay right here, because I believe the message you're going to get is meant for you for such a time as this to do something that you did not think you could do before. Listen up.

All right, guys, I have got a special friend here who is doing this recording. Dane. Camilla. He is amazing. He's. He's an incredible person, but his message is so powerful. So I want to encourage you today if you feel like things are frustrating, if you. If you're tempted to walk into stress or despair or frustration or overwhelm, I want you to stop everything because this is for you. Dane has written a book called Choose Prayer not to not despair, but the message of this is what you need to hear today. So, Dane, I want to thank you for hanging out with us for this time together.
Of course. Thank you so much for having me on, Hannah.
Oh, my goodness. You are such a blessing to so many people and your story is nothing but profound. Like, just, you know, give. Give a quick background because people sometimes they're like, oh, here's this guy who's talk in faith and that's really cool for him, may not apply to me, but you were literally. You were supposed to be on medication for the rest of your life. You were. You were diagnosed. You were like a basket case. Like, no hope. Right. Briefly bring us back to that and what happened.
Yeah, definitely. So I'm 33 years old right now, and when I was 18 years old is when I really made the decision to follow, start following Christ. And I grew up in the church, believed in Jesus, but didn't have a relationship until I was 18. And when I was 18 and made that decision, he just put that gift of encouragement on my heart. And one of the first things I started developing was just my prayer life. And it was such a great time to talk to him, to build a relationship. And he did some amazing things in my life. But also, four years into walking with him and being in college and all these great things happening, I had a mental health crisis that occurred. And it was interesting because it didn't sit on either side of my family. We didn't have anyone in our family who dealt with mental health. So I truly believe it was an attack from the enemy. And because I didn't really understand how to fight back against those attacks, I kind of opened myself up, opened myself up, entertained it, and it just spiraled out into this manic episode which is the result of someone who has bipolar disorder 1, which is what I had. It got so bad to the point where I had taken my sister's car with some delusion to go to California, become an actor, get people saved, because I was a believer at that time. But there was so much delusion and opposition happening at that time. And I even remember when I took her car, I was driving up on the freeway going like 70 miles an hour and clipped the back of her car. And after that it happened. It kind of woke me up, but still in this delusion, pulled the car off to the side of the freeway, got out, and proceeded to literally run to the side to LA on foot on the main freeway until cops came, put me in handcuffs, tested my blood because they weren't sure what was going on, and then took me to the hospital, where I would be later taken to a behavioral health facility where they would give me a lot of medication because they didn't know what was going on. And then I found out that I had this mental health illness and was told I was going to be on medication for the rest of my life. But because I had an amazing mom in my life who encouraged me to believe that, you know, through the power of prayer, I could be healed and to start walking in that, we started to believe that. And we didn't let this illness dictate how I was going to live the rest of my life, even though we took the medication. And that was something that was needed at that time. In the same period that this all happened, I was Also prayed for at church and supernaturally healed and got off the medication within a couple weeks. And it's been over 10 years and nothing has ever happened to me since. And I think that's why I started sharing my faith eight years after being healed on social media, just praying for people and encouraging people on the power of prayer. And that prayer, you know, can change your life, your mindset. It can help you walk through some of the most challenging moments and to know that there is freedom found in Christ. But also your prayer life is the way that you can start to walk this stuff out even when you're facing worry or anxiety or any type of emotional despair.
Yeah, man, that's so powerful to think that here you are flying down the highway to go to California, clip the car, get out, start running on foot down the highway, cops stop you, put you in handcuffs. Weeks later, everything is like everything takes a 180 and it is completely different. Just through the power of God, not just the power of God, but through the power of God. Like it really is a testimony to anything is possible. Like I think sometimes, and I want to hear your thoughts on this in, in our country and you know, like first world, we have medical care, we have, we have things that are disposal, we have specialists, we have all these solutions. And I think sometimes prayer becomes a last resort instead of our first go to, you know, instead of, instead of our first helpline, it becomes the last thing that we think about. It's like I hear people say, well, all you can do now is pray. Like, why wasn't that first? Do you think it's because, like, we have other solutions that seem to make sense to our logical mind? I don't know. Why is that? Why has prayer become like the bottom of the list instead of the top?
Yeah, I think it's a great question, especially when it comes to mental health. Mental health is talked about so much today because it seems to be such a pressing problem. But also at the same time, when you think about miracles and healings, it feels like the place and space where that happens the least. Right. And I think the reason for that is the church doesn't do a great job of walking with people who are going through mental health challeng because the way in which people behave when they're going through a crisis, they're stigmatized and looked at is crazy, but they're not also supported from the people who are supposed to be there to support them in prayer. So church and faith and prayer is almost siloed in mental health and Doctors and therapy and medication is put in another bucket, which was. Is helpful. It still is helpful. I did all of those things, but because we were a family of faith, we believed that that was going to be the thing that would ultimately make the difference because again, based on what the doctor said, there was no cure. There wasn't a cure. So we had to believe that the Lord was good enough to heal me. He's done it before and he can do it again. I'm not somebody like super. Especially at that time, I didn't know all the scriptures. I wasn't some super spiritual person. I just had a little bit of faith to believe that God could do something in my life and then had the confidence to say, let's start walking in that and let's just believe that God can show up and do only what he can do. And he did. And I think that's just important for people to understand. So I think it's difficult when we don't see the support there in the local church addressing those issues as much as maybe it should. That makes it difficult to say, okay, prayer is the last resort, not the first response.
Yeah, yeah, so true. I can see that. I think the church, I hope it's starting to be able to be more of a resource for mental health. And we're definitely not saying like no one should ever take medication, but when, when our solution becomes. When we leave. Got out of our solution, you know, leave God out of the plan, then I think that's. That's so detrimental for our faith walk. It's like we have faith for the little things, but can we have faith for the big things?
Yeah.
And sometimes I feel like the more objective the solution is, the less we'll use faith. And this is what I mean by that. Like, for example, having faith that your marriage will work out, having faith that you'll have more joy in your life. These things are like enigmatic. They're not measurable. But when you're talking about healing for a, for a disease, when you're talking about more like your debt being paid off, like these things that you can measure. I think we're afraid to use faith because if it doesn't hit the mark, then we have to almost rethink our theology. Like it's God love me or does he not? Or what am I doing wrong? And that kind of thing. And it leads to more confusion. But I want to encourage people like, just like you did, Dane, entertain it like you were like, okay, I know I come from a family of faith. Faith Is big. I've seen faith work before. Why not now? And you are willing to have the boldness to, to receive healing. Like you were at a service, you walked up and you had someone lay hands on you and speak healing over you. And then you held on to that and nurtured it with your faith and believed it. And I think that went to work immediately right there in your, in your brain and your body, in your nervous system. So I just want to encourage someone. It may not be full blown, like, it may not be bipolar, it may not be, you know, clinical depression, but it may be something like, like, I'm really struggling right now. And, and also that shame around it. Do you see that a lot, like when people have depression or anxiety, any type of mental illness, that now they're shame. Because Christians should not struggle with this.
Yeah. And I think especially when it comes to mental health or maybe you are going through something that's a disease related. It's so easy to look at what's going on in the world and what the world says about the thing. And like the Bible tells us, like, we cannot be conformed to the patterns of the world, but we have to be transformed by the renewing of our mind. So for us, which what made such a big difference is, well, what does the Bible say about me? Right. My identity is being challenged to believe that now I am a bipolar person. When that happened, we did not make that decision. I did not say I am a bipolar. I, I didn't even speak it over my life once. Like, just even saying that to you feels incongruent to who I am in Christ.
Yeah. It's like, ew, ew. My mouth can't form the words.
Yeah. It's like, yes, this is the diagnosis now, but what does God say? There's like, my identity is in him. So I didn't give that, that illness any more power than it deserved. I understood that was the situation. But we're like, no, we're going to believe that God's going to completely heal me. We'll take the medication, but by his stripes, I'm going to be made well and starting to meditate on that and walk in that. I think that is the most important thing for a believer to do is what does the word of God say about my situation? Not what the doctor says about it. Yes, the doctor might be right about this case. But I believe that God can also supernaturally move in a way that they can't.
You know, okay, you, you mentioned something and you kind of glossed over it. And I need to go there right now because I want to pull the curtain back and I want to expose what I believe is one of the biggest, most hazardous mistakes a believer can make. And it's this taking authority over whatever comes from the curse. And it's so, like, it's so unnoticeable almost, it's almost in passing, like, oh, my anxiety or my depression. Or we put the words like my, or, or have, or all these ownership words, right? And we, whatever we, oh, whatever we speak out, we own. Like, we are taking ownership of that because God is in his sovereignty, partners with us. And he says, I'm not going to do anything apart from you. Like, I've created everything. Now you go and you operate like me and you create. How did God create? He spoke it. How do we create? We speak it. And so I hear all these people saying, well, I was really struggling with my anxiety today, or, you know, I was fine and then, you know, or I can't get rid of my headache, you know, just anything. We're like, my high blood pressure, my insomnia, my depression, my anxiety, ooh, this feels gross in my mouth. I need to repent of it. Like, but how can we stop that? First of all, do you, do you see that as a, as a trend where people take ownership and not even realizing why it's still in them when.
They'Ve been trying to battle it 100%? I think one of the things that my mom did when we were very young, even though it maybe didn't take effect until I started, like following the Lord, was she would always say, don't speak that over your life. And you know, life and death are in the power of the tongue. I don't want you to tell me you're sick. I don't want you to speak sickness over your life. Yes, we don't speak things into existence, but we can come in agreement with things that are going on. So I didn't want to come in agreement with the illness I had. I acknowledged that it was the situation that was going on. But then I wanted to walk and speak. Healing over my life. Because I know Jesus died for all of my sins, but he died for everything that stems from sin, meaning sickness, sorrow, despair, anxiety, worry, fear. You're not your depression that you're experiencing on a day to day basis. You're free and you experience attacks of depression or anxiety or worry. So we have to make that difference in our minds, but then also back up what we believe by what we say because you're a product of your thoughts. And also your thoughts also become the things that you speak outside of your mouth. So, yeah, it's like you got to get rid of all of that vocabulary that just makes whatever you're dealing with harder to deal with. If you're just going to speak that thing over your life versus no, I'm going to speak God's word. I'm going to speak my healing. I'm going to speak great joy because that's what I get to benefit from as a result of knowing who I am. So a hundred percent, like, I never spoke the illness over my life. And I do think that made a huge difference because again, what do you focus on? That's what you're going to feel more of. What are you speaking over your life? That's what you're going to pay attention to. So it's so important. And that's something that we did. And it, I believe that helped me remain hopeful and also be in a place where God could show up and move and heal me.
Yeah. Yeah. Because Proverbs, life and death is the power of the tongue. Like, the tongue. The Bible talks about the tiniest part of your body. Your tongue has the power to direct your life. It's like a rudder on a boat. Wherever you direct it, your boat's going to go. And, And I, A lot, I think a lot of people, a lot of faith people are like, oh, well, that's denial. Like, for me to say, no, I'm not sick and you're sneezing your head off or, you know, your head, your headache is like throbbing, and you're like, no, I'm. I'm whole and healed and I have no pains. Like, okay. And they're like, but I'm deceiving myself. That's not true. But this is where we have to understand the difference between facts and truth. Yeah. Like, facts are what currently is observable, but truth is what does not change. And so God's always about healing and wholeness and prospering and, and that, that overflow life. Sometimes when things, when I'm struggling and like, it could be a financial struggle, instead of saying, I don't have any money, I might say, we're. We're currently in a battle right now. More is coming. Like, I have to recognize it. Like, where do we find that place where, like, no, I'm not in denial. I recognize it, but I'm going to operate in truth. You see what I mean? Like, where's that place where Christians can camp out? Or we can acknowledge it and support one another, but also believe that, oh, no, God's word does stand true.
Yeah. It's such a great question because even for me, like, if I got sick, I'm not going to be like, I'm not sick. I'll know. Like, okay, I'm sick. But you know what? I also know that I'm going to be made well, and that's what I'm going to focus on. So, yes, if I have a certain sickness, can I take something to help me? Yeah. But at the same time, I'm not just going to go, I'm sick. I'm sick. I'm not feeling well. This is getting worse. Like, we start to just build and build and build and make things worse. Or we'll start telling ourselves when we're not feeling well. Like, I just know sickness is coming on. Like, that's such a huge mistake. So if I'm feeling unwell, I'll acknowledge that I'm unwell, but then I'll say, okay, what does the word say? Like, thank you, Lord, I'm giving this to you right now. I'm speaking against this sickness and telling go. Telling it to go in the name of Jesus, because we have power in the name of Jesus. So we walk in that while understanding what we're going through, believing that he will heal us. During that time, I even remember, like, when I was doing live streams and prayer content back during, you know, when the. The pandemic happened, and I got, you know, I was sick during that time and I lost my taste and everything. But I was on live streams with people, praying for people, going, like, hey, I have a really bad headache, but I know I'm going to be made well just to show people, like, I have a choice. I can either sit, do nothing and be, like, so miserable about this, or I can lean in, choose to pray, choose to acknowledge who. Who the Lord is and that he's good enough to take this and he will. And. Yes. Did it go in the first day or the first week or for the first two weeks? No. It maybe took 14 or 15 days, but then I was made well, reminding myself that it's like, yeah, sometimes I'm going to go through some, you know, battles, but I know that the Lord is good and already has won the battle over death, sickness, and sin. So that's the place we have to continue to operate at. It's not blind delusion. No, no, no, I'm not feeling bad. Oh, you just cut yourself and you're bleeding. No, no, no, I'm fine. No, it's like, stop still acknowledging those things. But then where are you going to sit and remain and walk in? That's, I think, the most important thing.
Absolutely. Dane, you said the key word there. You said I had. I choose. Like, I had to make a choice. And I think that's why God tells us that, behold, I put before you life and death. We're always going to be able to choose the worst case scenario or the best case scenario, and we get to choose that. And so I think every time we're not seeing the manifestation of what we're believing for and what God's word says, choose to lean into it. Choose to imagine what has not happened yet and put your energy toward that. I remember I saw this commercial one time. You would freak out, but there's this commercial. It was geared for moms. It's like, hey, moms, it's that time of year and again, cold and flu season. Make sure you stock up. And it was like, all the medications, you know, it was like a pharmacy commercial. And I was like, all right, so here's. Here's what you're saying. A good mom prepares for sickness and, like, opens the door to it. And a lot of people say, well, absolutely, like, a good mom is prepared in that way. And I was like, what if a good mom opens the door to health and healing? What if it's like, hey, it's that time of year again. Put up all the. All the scripture, start speaking it out, start declaring it over yourself and your children. And I think it's so important. I mean, you know, my audience is moms. Like, I'm like, come on, moms. We gotta. We gotta fight this fight. We gotta stand a battle. Dane, if it wasn't for your mom, who knows?
Right?
Right. You grew up in a household of faith. So this is why I want to encourage moms. Look at the power of what happened in Dane's life as a result of his mom fueling him with faith and him leaning into that. And so I want to just encourage people, like, don't speak what's around you. Speak what's inside you. Hide the word of God in your heart and start speaking that. It totally changed your life. It changed everything about you, and it continues to direct you today.
Yeah, 100%. And it's just interesting, even to your topic on, you know, it's that time of the month again, we've made that just so common. Like, even where it's like, oh, this month we're celebrating, like, cancer awareness Month. I get it. Like, cancer is a difficult thing that a lot of people go through, but it's like we're making that the, like, the thing where we should be celebrating, like, oh, this month, like, let's talk about that we have healing by the blood of Jesus and that we are made whole in, like, Identity Awareness Month and who we are in Christ. Like, those are the things that we should teach people how to walk in, not just to conform to what's so common. Like, I think what makes it difficult today with mental health is it's really easy to wear it as a badge of honor. Like, even when I went through that thing, I could see myself just deciding to be like, yeah, I'm bipolar and I'm going to become an advocate for mental health. And like, yeah, that could have been.
No one would have thought anything less of, you know? Yeah, it would have been like, yay, yay, you. But you chose something radically different.
Yeah, I chose to be like, I chose and said, we will beat this and this is why. And we're just going to start walking in that now. I don't know how it's going to happen, but I believe that God is good enough to move and heal because I've read about it in the Bible. I've heard stories of other people going through healing and why not me? And he did it for me, and he can do it for you, too. You just have to keep believing that and walking in it and stop trying to just say, well, I guess this is going to be the rest of my life. Because that's a decision and that can hinder so much of, like, what he wants to do in your life.
Right? And someone right now is listening or watching. And they have been battling. I need, I need to know how they've been coming up with their list, the pros, their cons, their solutions. They're running through it in their head. They go to bed within a night. How's God going to fix this? How's he going to work it out? You just said it. You didn't have to know how, you had to know who. You had to know the covenant. The more we know the covenant that we have with God through Jesus, that the healing, prosperity, wholeness, that shalom, peace. The more we know that, the less we have to hold so tight into the how because we just. We know God's good man, so powerful. I just believe this is really ministering to some. Someone today. And if you wouldn't mind, I'd love to wrap this up. And if you would just pray over those people who are watching and listening right now.
Of course. Heavenly Father, I just wanted to thank you for this opportunity to talk about you, your goodness and the power of prayer. Lord, I lift up anyone listening right now who's dealing with any bit of despair. It can be anxiety, worry, maybe even something more serious like depression or a mental health illness going on in their life or the lives of someone in their family, maybe their kids. Lord, I just pray for you to give them the strength to continue to endure during this time. Help them remember that you are a great physician, you are more than able and willing to heal and to completely restore and redeem this situation. And I just pray from this moment going forward that they continue to remember your goodness, to continue to remember that you are a healer, that you can heal them in this situation and to just help them find scriptures to speak over their life and claim in the name of Jesus. Lord, we pray against any depression and we tell it to go right now. Fill them with a level of peace that just helps them know that you are good and you are with them. Take all the anxiety, the worry, the fear, any type of suicidal ideation, anything in their family that's been troubling their kids, their marriage, their relationships in any way. We just pray against anyone, anything, Lord. And we pray that you remove it. You fill them with peace, you come in, you restore, you deliver, you move them to a place of freedom, you renew their mind and you help them to just understand that their words have power, Lord, and that they can speak of your goodness, they can speak of your glory, your healing. And I just pray that you give them that confidence, that assurance. Right now. We believe that the situation they're going through right now is coming to an end. You're removing it. You're moving in this, Lord, you're healing them. And we just pray for you to comfort them, for your presence to be made known to them, for you to encounter them in powerful ways as they seek you and seek you with all of their heart. Thank you for being so good. Thank you for touching this individual today. And I just pray that you show up for them each and every day going forward as they continue to do their life with you. We love you and thank you and pray all of these things in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
Now if that doesn't set you on fire, then your woods went. That is powerful. Dane, thank you so much. And guys, make sure you connect with Dane. He is such a powerful prayer partner. I so appreciate him being my friend. Knowing someone's in my corner and pick up his book, choose prayer not despair. It's going to really bless you. Anything else, like where people can get a hold of you or something you're doing? You want to share with audience?
Yeah. The book is the newest thing. You can check that out on Amazon. It's available on Amazon. And if you want to connect with us on social, we spend a lot of time there doing live streams and lots of prayer content and it's just lit with prayer. L I T W I T H prayer. All one word.
Love it. Thank you, Dane. God bless you, man.
Thanks, Hannah.
