In this testimonial, Patrick Harrington reflects on a recent coaching session with his coach, Harlow (also referred to as Chip). He emphasizes the importance of surrounding oneself with people who hold you to higher standards, describing this as a core reason coaching can drive change. Patrick shares a specific anecdote where he promised to complete two tasks, failed to write them down, and consequently forgot them. Chip called him out, telling him he was "disqualifying" himself from being a referral because he didn’t keep his word. This direct feedback, which Patrick says he has rarely received before, highlighted the value of paying for accountability. He thanks Chip/Harlow for the reminder and for holding him accountable, and encourages others to seek similar relationships if they want to break out of their status quo.

Hi, I'm sharing that today about, um, an amazing reflection that I was given from my coach Harlow. And what I said to him was, um, he'd already earned his fees from this one, this one reflection that he'd given me, and Uh, it ties right back into something that I feel like is kind of being shown to me again and again, whether it be through a newsletter that comes across from a big thinker that just hit my inbox this morning that reminded me of this little thing that I'm going to share with you here in a moment that still makes a huge difference for him in his life. And that is to surround yourself by people who hold you to a higher account than you might or I might for myself. And it's one of the biggest reasons why I think coaching makes a difference and why I think for anyone that wants to change their own status quo, right? Everybody has their own status quo and what they go back to on a regular basis and how they be and how they operate. If you're happy with that and you wanna stay right where you are, then beautiful. That's an incredible place to land. And I encourage you to find that place. However, if you're like me and you see these massive changes happening all over the world and insecurities, for me, it's really important right now to follow the advice of sages that, you know, point towards the stars and say, surround yourself by people who hold you at a higher account than you do. And the other day, I told Chip that I would do two things., and, um, I got busy and I didn't write them down. And, um, there it was the next morning, and Chip says to me, um, you are disqualifying yourself essentially for being someone that I would refer others to by not being your word. You're disqualifying yourself from being a referral. No one had ever said that to me, and I know that I've— that this situation has played out countless times in my life where I said I was going to do something and then I forgot. And, um, because my operating system is cute enough or funny enough or tall enough or white enough or whatever it is enough, people let it slide. And Chip didn't. And that's what happens when I'm in a relationship where I'm paying someone. I'm expending resources, I'm devoting resources to better me and to hold me account. So thank you, Chip. Harlow, same person. And thank you for asking me to make this video to remind myself.
