9 Types of Prophets – Which Is YOUR Anointing? (Life-Changing!)

Harry Pitts identifies nine prophetic profiles from Scripture, from Jeremiah the burden-bearer to John the Baptist the forerunner. Each has a different function and pitfalls. Pitts argues these are assignments, not ranks, and that prophetic growth requires identity before activity, purity before platform, and Scripture before spontaneity.

Ultimately, prophecy is not a mystery reserved for a few. It's a ministry given for the building up of the church. Throughout Scripture, we see many prophets, different personalities, different moments, different missions, but one unshakable truth runs through them all. Every true prophet serves God's purpose, not their own. Prophets do not compete. They complete the assignment of God in different ways. Prophecy is not performance. It's a partnership. When we understand that, we can stop chasing platforms and start cultivating his presence in our lives. So today we'll talk about 9 different prophetic profiles found in scripture. We'll study how God called them, what made each one of them unique, and what we can learn from their assignments. This is not about rank or spiritual status. It's about function, faithfulness, and fruit. Every prophetic expression reveals a different facet of God's heart. Some thunder, others whisper. Some confront, others comfort. Yet all flow from the same Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, As these voices come together, the church hears heaven clearly. So open your heart not to labor yourself, but to locate yourself in purpose. These are lanes, not levels. They're not just lanes or levels. They are assignments. Did you get that? They are assignments. They're not titles. Let's open the word of God together. So let's start with the first prophet, Jeremiah. You find this in Jeremiah chapter 1, verse 4 through 5. And this is what the word states. It says, before I formed thee in the belly, I knew thee. Hear me, Jeremiah wasn't born into prophecy by bloodline. He was set apart by purpose. God's foreknowledge carried his destiny. He spoke truth to a collapsing nation. He wept, he suffered, but he never quit. This man of God never quit. He had fight inside of him. His tears were intercession, not weakness. When culture compromised, he carried conviction. Today's Jeremiahs are burden bearers who They feel the weight of the world's sin. They cry over what others scroll past. They may be counselors, prayer leaders, or truth-tellers in dark places. God shapes compassion under pressure. The danger— hear me, these Jeremiah types— the danger is emotional fatigue or isolation. Learn to carry the burden without becoming the burden. Write down what breaks your heart this week and bring it to prayer. Ask the Lord, is this your burden or mine? Pray until peace replaces the pain that you're feeling in your heart. The mediating prophet Moses— the Bible talks about Moses in Numbers chapter 12, verses 6 through 8, and it says this: With him I speak mouth to mouth, clearly, not in riddles. Moses stood between God and the people, carrying covenant law and mercy. His authority flowed from his intimacy with God. These type of prophetic types, they are bridge builders, leaders who reconcile generations, races, and systems. They stand in the tension between holiness and humanity. Now I need you to hear me. God forms patience and empathy in them, but you need to heed this warning. Their danger is frustration when people resist change. Spend time listening before advising. Ask the Lord to teach you how to stand for people without standing in place of them. Number 3, the commissioned prophet, Amos. We see Amos in Amos chapter 7, verse 14 and 15, and this is what it says. I was neither a prophet nor the son of one, but the Lord said, go. Amos was a farmer until God interrupted his ordinary routine. Marketplace prophets, teachers, creatives, Entrepreneurs are called from daily life to speak righteousness and justice. God forms boldness wrapped in humility. Now hear me, the pitfall of this type of prophet is rejecting training because I'm self-taught. Write one sentence that summarizes the truth God's calling you to stand for and declare it in prayer until it becomes conviction. Number 4, the transitional prophet Samuel. You find this in 1 Samuel 3:19-21. The Lord was with Samuel and let none of his words fall to the ground. Samuel restored hearing in a season when revelation was rare. Reformers who guide the church from one season to the next are the Samuel type. They mentor, they restructure, and they raise up new leaders. God forms discernment and endurance in these men and women of God. Now I need you to hear me. The pitfall— this is what you need to be aware of— trying to hold 2 seasons Trying to hold two seasons too long. Ask the Holy Spirit, what season am I bridging? Identify what must end and what must begin. Okay, the intercessory prophet Abraham—you find this in Genesis chapter twenty verse seven—he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee. Abraham's Prophecy was expressed through prayer. He pleaded for nations and believed when no one else could. Hidden intercessors who carry the world on their knees, they birth revival behind closed doors. Hear me, God forms faith and persistence in these men and women of God. But here's The pitfall, and this is what you need to be aware of, praying without expecting results. You should pray, but you should expect results. Make a list of 5 people or regions heavy on your heart. Commit to pray daily until you see God move in those regions or move in the lives of those people. The warning prophet Jonah Jonah chapter 3, verse 4 and 5. 40 days more and Nineveh shall be overthrown. And the people believed God. Jonah's message shows prophecy can be conditional. Did you hear that? Prophecy can be conditional. Repentance can rewrite judgment. Okay. Repentance can rewrite judgment. judgment, watchmen and reformers who sense danger early, calling for repentance before crisis takes place. That's the Jonah type. God forms obedience and compassion in their hearts. But the pitfall to these men and women of God, you need to be aware of this, is anger when mercy wins. You should be aware of this. When mercy wins, do not be angry. Before sharing a warning, pray, Lord, give me your tone, not my temper. Deliver truth in love. Okay, number 7, the humble prophet, the unnamed worker, the one who preaches or teaches in Jesus' name. The Bible says this in Mark chapter 9, verse 38 We saw one casting out devils in your name. Jesus said, forbid him not. Not every prophet is famous. Some serve anonymously with real authority. Okay. Not every prophet has fame or notoriety, but they serve anonymously and they have real authority and power. given by heaven. Miracles, signs, and wonders follow these men and women of God. Their platform is different than many of yours. Every believer's quietly used by God. They can be dream interpreters, encouragers, helpers. God forms humility and contentment in these men and women of God. But I need you to hear me. The pitfalls or danger that you need to be aware of: resentment from lack of recognition. Resentment from lack of recognition. Do not become embittered because God has you on a different assignment. You are popular with God. You are popular with God and not necessarily before men. Do not become resentful. from the lack of recognition that you may or may not receive. Bless someone secretly this week. Let hidden obedience become your highest worship. Number 8, the successive prophet, Elisha. 2 Kings 2:9-15. Let a double portion of your spirit be upon me. Elisha didn't replace Elijah. He continued with him. Double portion meant inheritance, not hierarchy. Modern reflection teaches this. Some sons and daughters of legacy who build on what came before them, they're walking in the footsteps of the men and women of God that came before them. God forms loyalty and consistency in their hearts. And God teaches them his ways through their mentors, those that have trained and taught them. They are consistent, they are loyal. But I need you to hear me. The pitfall of many of these types— this is something you need to be aware of— is that envy of mentors or arrogance After success could try to manifest envy of your mentors or arrogance after success. Be mindful of this. Okay? Send gratitude to someone whose mantle you carry. Honor keeps flowing. And as you send this, um, these letters of gratitude to the mantles to the people of the mantles that you carry. This keeps the oil flowing in your life. So be, be humble, be grateful so that the oil will continue to flow in your life. Number 9, the forerunner prophet, John the Baptist. Luke chapter 1, verse 15 through 17 talks about this. He shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah. John prepared the way for Jesus. Jesus, who, uh, is the prophet of prophets, is the anointed one of God. But John, who prepared the way for Jesus— greatest by assignment, not rank, greatest by assignment, not rank— revivalist and pioneers who clear paths for Christ. They are the ones that are the pioneers, the trailblazers that clear the paths for Christ-centered renewal. I need you to hear me. God forms courage and purity in these people. Now you need to be mindful. One of the pitfalls and danger that you have to be aware of is harshness or forgetting that preparation isn't the finale. Harshness or forgetting that preparation isn't the finale. Fast or simplify for a day. Practice decreasing so Christ may increase. You need to fast or simplify for a day. Practice, Lord, decrease so that I may— so that you may— I decrease so that you may increase in me. And I need you to be aware of this. Now, there's been a teaching, and I need to give some clarity to much of this about rank, ranking prophets. Today this is happening. You do not rank prophets. Prophets have an assignment. The Bible says this in Romans chapter 12, verse 6 and 8, and you can— you find this in 1 Corinthians chapter 12, verses 4 through 6. It reminds us that there are different gifts, same Spirit, different ministries, same Lord. Prophets serve, they do not rule. Even when Christ said the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve. Maturity isn't measured by how many you have listening to you or how many hear you, but by how faithfully you hear him. And we have to have development that takes place. Prophetic growth follows divine order. Identity before activity, purity before platform, scripture before spontaneity. God trains prophets through silence, correction, and community. Prayer is your forge, humility your safety harness. Character always precedes charisma. The word must anchor every revelation. Did you hear that? The word must anchor every revelation. Love must interpret every vision. Stay accountable, stay teachable, stay grounded. And I wanna talk about the prophetic ecosystem in the church. The prophetic is not solo, it's symphonic. Each type adds a tone. Jeremiah carries conviction, Abraham compassion, Amos justice, Samuel structure, Jonah correction, Elijah continuation, John awakening. Together they reveal Christ's full voice to his body. And there has to be checks and balances. There has to be, there has to be checks and balances. Warners need intercessors for mercy. Successors need consecrated voices for purity. Forerunners need mediators for translation. When these lanes flow together, the church becomes prophetic, not just host prophets. Apostolic alignment keeps order. Okay, apostolic alignment keeps order. Prophecy submits to scripture, to leadership, and to love. Without that, gifts drift into spectacle. With it, the church matures into unity of faith and the fullness of Christ. I need you to do this: keep a prophetic journal. Record dreams, scriptures, Impressions. Review them with mentors. Discern fruit, not thrill. Hear me, discern fruit, not thrill. In prayer and prayer gatherings, let 2 or 3 speak while others discern. Examine motives often. Remember, accuracy matters, but fruit lasts. And I need to give you a charge. Prophets, intercessors, dreamers, believers, do not chase recognition. Chase revelation. Do not seek platform. Seek presence. Seek his presence in your life. Do not measure success by followers or people listening to you. Measure it by obedience to God's voice and his word. The spirit of prophecy is the testimony of Jesus. When prophecy stops pointing to him, it becomes performance. So let's return to accuracy, to scripture, to Christ. The hour we're in is not about prophetic celebrity, but prophetic clarity. It's about prophetic clarity, not prophetic celebrity. I need you to pray with me. Lord, refine our motives. Train our hearing. Build a prophetic community that sounds like heaven. Let our words carry your heart and our hearts carry your word. Let the church rise not in hierarchy but in humility, not in noise but in knowing you. For this is the generation that will see prophecy purified. Purpose restored and Jesus glorified. I thank you for your word. Let your word be preeminent in my life. And if the prophecy and the prophet is speaking more of himself and not pointing them to Jesus, Father, give clarity, bring correction lovingly. In Jesus' name, amen. God bless you. Do me a favor.
