Breaking the Myth of Generational Curses

Harry Pitts argues that generational curses are a false doctrine rooted in fear-based theology, not Scripture. Old Testament curses were national judgments under the Mosaic covenant, not inherited spiritual penalties. The cross cancelled those curses, and sin patterns are learned behaviors, not spiritually transferred through families.

Maybe the service is going to be a little bit different. I'm going to speak on a topic. that I think needs to be spoken on. We've been, we've been teaching on forgiveness and remission, or the remittance of sin. Amen. And I honestly believe that the message that I'm going to teach on today is life-changing. It also, um, the second part of the series we dealt with sin consciousness and Christ consciousness. But I believe there is an issue that is in the body of Christ that has been lurking for a long time, and many people have not really dealt with this. They've not dealt with the responsibility of touching this subject. And the reason why I believe Uh, it is a touchy subject because, uh, this can spark, uh, outrage for a lot of people. So I ask that you pray for me as I obey God in, uh, touching on this, because this is part of the series that we're teaching on sin consciousness and Christ consciousness. Yes. The church has been operating in malpractice because for so long it's been teaching people how to be sin-conscious, constantly reminding people of sin. Well, they already know that they are living in sin, living beneath their privileges, so they don't need a constant reminder of this thing. So today we're going to teach on a subject. And if you're watching me, I need you to hear me closely. We're going to be teaching on a subject that is going to— I honestly believe that if you hear this with the heart of Christ, it's going to set you free. And I want to title this message, Breaking the Myth of generational curses. Breaking the myth of generational curses. Now, there are some people that are going to probably argue about generational curses, and which to me is in fact insane that someone would argue and debate, want to debate with me regarding generational curses and saying generational curses exist. I don't know many people that want to be cursed, but believe me, there are some folk out there that have said, man, I don't know about that now. So, so you're OK with having generational curses? And now I'm not— I don't agree with that doctrine at all. So the phrase generational curses has become extremely common in modern Christianity and conversations held by some spiritual leaders, held by numerous believers in churches, people and families, especially in the charismatic and deliverance environments. Amen. Many sincere believers live under the fear that their past sins, this sin consciousness, that their past sins or the sins of their parents have created spiritual chains binding them, binding their children, their grandchildren, or the entire bloodline. Right. But fear is not the teacher of the church. Truth is, contrary to what many people may believe, fear is not the teacher of the church. Truth is. So my assignment today is designed to bring clarity, accuracy, and biblical foundation to a subject that has been clouded by misunderstanding. Superstition and cultural mythology. So the objective of this mission, this calling, this ministry today is to do a couple of things. Write these down. One, liberate believers from fear-based theology. To liberate believers from fear-based theology. Anchor them in the finished work of Christ. Number 3, clarify what Scripture truly teaches about this subject. Number 4, expose unbiblical doctrines about this subject that I'm teaching on, generational curses. And finally, number 5, to equip the church to think critically and biblically. This is not an attack on people. It is a defense of the gospel of Christ. So I'm not picking on anyone in particular. This is a truth that needs to be spoken to liberate people from what I believe is in fact false doctrine. So let's talk about this, the difference between biblical curses and cultural superstition. So I want to say that biblical curses and cultural superstition. The first step to accuracy is separation. The Bible, the Bible defines or gives definition of curses, and it says it is not the cultural definition of what a curse is. Biblical curses are covenant-based, not DNA-based. They are covenant-based, not DNA-based. In the Old Testament, curses are tied to a covenant system, specifically the Mosaic Covenant found in Deuteronomy chapter 28. Deuteronomy chapter 28. These curses fell on Israel as a nation, not on Christians, Gentiles, or New Testament believers. There are 2 types of curses in Scripture. The first one is covenant curses found in Deuteronomy 28. This includes Famine. Disease. Oppression. National judgment. Exile. These curses were the result of violating the Sinai Covenant found in Scripture. They were never designed for the church. The nations, Gentiles, New Covenant believers. Let's talk about number 2, consequences for sin, not generational curses. The Bible teaches consequences, discipline, and sowing and reaping, which is found in Galatians chapter 6. Verse 7, but never teaches that God passes curses through genetic lines. You cannot find that in the script. You cannot find that in the scripture. You cannot find that in your Bible. You cannot find that in your text. No curse can travel through DNA. No curse can travel through DNA. No curse is inherited spiritually by Christians. Hear me. No curse is inherited spiritually by Christians. Sin patterns can be learned, but not spiritually transferred. Did you hear me? Yes. Let me say that again. Sin patterns. Hear me, if you're watching us online, sin patterns can be learned but not spiritually transferred. The Bible says in Ezekiel 18:20— let me give you some scripture on this. I don't want you to think that I'm formulating my own thoughts on this. Let's see what the Bible says. Ezekiel chapter 18, verse 20 says this: The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father. This destroys the generational curse doctrine all by itself. It destroys it. It ameliorates it. It removes it. Amen. It destroys it. So the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father. So if you're believing that, you're wrong. There are no generational curses on you. There are no generational curses on your grandchildren, your children, your nieces, your nephews. Amen. It says the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father. So what's going on with this? Who started this lie? Who created this myth? This is totally antithetical to what the scripture is saying. This text alone destroys the belief that generational curses can be passed down from one generation to the next generation. Ah, what we're dealing with, what we're dealing with is cultural superstition. Yes, which has been mistaken for theology. Amen. Across cultures, people use the word curse to describe misfortune. What do they say when they want to describe misfortune? Man, I just got bad luck. Evil eyes. I've heard people say bloodline punishments. That's a lie. Family hexes, ancestor retaliation, spirits attached to DNA, karma-like repercussions, ancestral debt, ancestral debt. Yeah, people honestly believe this. These ideas originate in African traditional religion. Caribbean spiritualism, hoodoo and rootwork, Santeria, medieval European superstition. Educate, educate. Ancient Arminianism. Let's take it further. New Age spirituality. All these beliefs generate from here. These do not come from Scripture. Amen. How has this entered the church? Many Pentecostal and charismatic circles unintentionally baptize cultural superstition in biblical language. And this is what I call sin consciousness. People begin calling trauma curses. Calling patterns demons and calling learned behavior bloodline spirits. The simple truth for people is demons do not travel through your DNA. They do not. Trauma does, however, but demons don't. Why the cross of Christ ended all covenant curses. The doctrine of generational curses directly contradicts the gospel. See, there's something wrong when people honestly want to hold on to this. What you do is you empower an enemy that is trying to keep you in bondage. That's right. So you're telling me that it's okay to believe in curses if you're comfortable We're believing in generational curses, something that has been designed for your demise. Now, if you are a spiritual person, there's something wrong with that. If you want to hold on to that, do you love being cursed? Do you love being not blessed? Do you honestly believe that no one in your family can be successful? Something is wrong with that belief system. Do me a favor, answer this, answer this question. Answer me this question. If you enjoy losing, then are you okay with that? Are you honestly okay with losing? Who likes losing? Who likes being a failure? Nobody. So why would you hold on to a belief system that is designed to defeat perpetual generations in your family. It is false doctrine. It is a trick of the enemy. It is what the enemy uses to defeat believers. Get a revelation. The Bible's position is clear and final and non-negotiable. Galatians chapter 3, verse 13. Galatians chapter 3, verse 13, where it says the curse is finished. This is the silver bullet. For generational curse believing folk. Now I want to make you free. I'm going to set you free. So if you listen to this and you accept what the Bible says, then you're going to be free from this false doctrine. Hear me. This is what it says: Christ has redeemed us. Galatians chapter three. It says Christ has redeemed us. From the curse of the law. Now hear me, and if anyone teach anything other than this word, what does the Bible say you do to that person? You called him what? Accursed. If they're teaching anything other than this, you better mark them. God says that that language is dangerous. The Greek word for the word redeem is the word exgorison. Exgoracian, meaning to buy completely out of a system, to remove from all ownership, to never return again. You spell that word E-X-E-G-O-R-A-S-E-N. It means to buy completely out of a system. To remove us from this consciousness of sin, from the shackles that have tried to shackle our mind, uh, to deliver us from this sin consciousness that the enemy wants us to believe, to remove from all ownership— ownership of what? A past thinking that is failed thinking, to never return again. Amen. This means you cannot be cursed and redeemed at the same time. Teach, teach, teach. You cannot pass on a curse Christ already shattered. How can you pass on a curse? Oh beloved, you are so precious to God. God wants you to be liberated and free. The Bible says whom the Son has set free is free Indeed, you cannot pass on a curse that Christ has already shattered. Now, here's a powerful one. Write this down if you're watching us online. You cannot inherit a curse Christ already absorbed. Let me give you some more scripture on this. Colossians chapter 2, verse 14. It says this in the New Living Translation. Colossians chapter 2, verse 14. He canceled the record of charges against us and destroyed it by what? Nailing it to the cross. If the curse was nailed to the cross, it cannot be hanging on your bloodline. Why does this matter? Curses existed under the Mosaic Law, but believers do not live under the Mosaic Law. We live under Christ. Ah, the curse died at Calvary. The curse ended at the empty tomb. The curse cannot resurrect. Amen. Ah, the simple takeaway: if Jesus If Jesus took the curse, you cannot carry it. Hallelujah. Amen. If Jesus broke the curse, you cannot pass it on. Hallelujah. Thank you, Jesus. Oh my goodness. Thank you, Lord. That's good. Amen. I gotta ask a question, Pastor Keith. This is gonna probably shake social media. I've gotta ask this question. people of God, why Christians still struggle. It's not cures that you need. It's really sanctification. Many people confuse growth with generational curses. Let's make this clear. Struggle is not a curse. Amen. Let me say that again. Struggle is not a curse. Sanctification Sanctification takes time. Just because you go through things, it doesn't mean that you're cursed. Sanctification simply takes time. That's right. You're going through things. Oh man, I've been fighting this thing. Sanctification, beloved, takes time. Patterns do not equal punishment because you're dealing with patterns. of sin, learned behavior that you've received from your parents, from your uncles, from your aunts, learned behaviors because you've been conditioned in a particular environment. Patterns do not equal punishment. The Bible explains— the Bible explains the believer's struggle in Romans 12:2. Listen at this. Romans chapter 12, verse 2. Be transformed by what? The renewing of your mind. Not your bloodline. Your mind. Not your bloodline. Your mind. Not your bloodline. Your mind. Not your bloodline. Your mind needs to be renewed. Amen. You don't find that in the text. It doesn't say bloodline. It says Be transformed. How are you to be transformed? By the renewing of your mind, not your bloodline. Amen. Philippians chapter 2, verse 12. So what is Christ— let me pause right there. What is Christ saying? If you are to be renewed, to be transformed by the renewing of your mind, what is he talking about? Your consciousness. That sin consciousness that has to be removed, deleted, expunged. Ah, God wants that mentality uprooted out of— Family, what if I told you that you're not stuck? You're just sleeping on your potential. Most people wait for motivation to find them.
