Familiar Spirits EXPOSED: How Monitoring Spirits Track You & How to Shut the Door Forever

In this sermon‑style teaching, Pastor Harry Pitts warns that spiritual warfare extends beyond prayer and rebuke to a battle for information. He defines two enemy operations: monitoring spirits, which observe a believer’s daily habits, conversations, and vulnerabilities to gather intel, and familiar spirits, which exploit established, generational patterns and past weaknesses. Pitts contrasts these limited, non‑omnipresent forces with God’s perfect knowledge, emphasizing that knowledge alone does not grant the enemy authority. He illustrates his points with five biblical case studies—Job (the enemy’s observation of God’s hedge), Samson (Delilah’s extraction of private information to weaken public strength), Herod (the Magi’s intelligence leading to a murderous plot), Hezekiah (prideful exposure of resources inviting attack), and Jesus (the temptation where Satan used known hunger but could not control Him). From these examples he draws practical principles: guard conversations, limit access, discern motives behind questions, avoid unnecessary disclosure, and obey God’s timing even when details are withheld. He urges believers to exercise spiritual wisdom, prayerful discretion, and boundary‑setting to prevent monitoring and familiar spirits from gathering exploitable data, concluding with a call to live alert, not paranoid, and to protect the divine assignment entrusted to each believer.
Chapters
There is a battle for information. Monitoring spirits, familiar spirits, and spiritual warfare is real. You didn't start it, but it is real. The Bible says in Ephesians chapter 6 that we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but we are in spiritual warfare. There's a battle surrounding information. The enemy wants to know what God has shown you. He wants to know what God is building through you.
He wants to know what matters to you.
He wants to know where you're going and what God is going to manifest through your life. He wants to know who influences you. He wants to know where you become vulnerable. Right.
Information reveals direction.
Hmm. Can you say that? Information reveals direction. Information exposes desire. Information identifies access. Information helps the enemy determine When, where, and how to strike a believer. This is why spiritual warfare involves more than rebuking spirits.
Spiritual warfare also requires wisdom. It requires restraint. It requires discernment.
It requires you to recognize when someone is gathering information Instead of offering support. Every question does not deserve an answer. Every person does not deserve access to your life. Every plan does not need an announcement.
Every blessing does not need immediate exposure.
I want you to think about that. Every blessing does not need immediate, immediate exposure. Be careful about those people that surround you, those busybodies. Today we're dealing with 2 spiritual operations: monitoring spirits and familiar spirits. While the Bible doesn't talk about monitoring spirits, it does talk about monitoring behavior that the enemy uses. The word of God says he goes to and fro seeking who he may devour. Because monitoring spirits observe your present activity, they record everything you do daily— when you lie down, when you sleep, your favorite color, those things that draw your attention, those triggers that trigger you. They collect details about your plans, your relationships, your habits, your conversations, and your vulnerabilities.
Familiar spirits are more sinister and dangerous. Familiar spirits work from established knowledge.
They recognize patterns that have continued across time, generationally. Also, they understand recurring Behaviors. They recognize weaknesses that have remained unchallenged.
They are familiar with what repeatedly affected you and those connected to you. Whereas monitoring spirits collect information, familiar spirits operate from information already established. This is why familiar spirits Pose a much more greater threat to you. They don't begin their work without a reference point. They approach with knowledge of previous patterns, repeated failures, family struggles, emotional wounds, and areas where resistance has remained weak.
But neither monitoring spirits nor familiar spirits possess the omniscient knowledge that God has.
God knows everything. They do not. They don't know what you think, so they study you.
Like I said, God knows everything because he is God.
He does not investigate you to learn about you.
He knows your thoughts before you express them. He knows your needs before you even ask.
He knows your beginning and your ending. The Word of God reminds us that God knows the end from the beginning.
He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. He is the Author and Finisher, meaning that God writes the story. So therefore, He knows the end of the story. Revelation chapter 20 describes books being opened. Those books contain a record of human lives, decisions, words, and works. Heaven keeps a record.
Nothing escapes God's attention. Nothing disappears from his knowledge. Nothing remains hidden from his judgment. Satan, on the other hand, Satan does not possess this unlimited knowledge that God does. Satan must observe. He must listen. He must examine behavior. He must gather details.
He must recognize patterns, generational patterns that are in your family lineage.
He must wait for information to reveal an opportunity to strike. This is why 1 Peter warns us to remain sober and vigilant. Our adversary walks about like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour. The word seeking reveals activity. He is searching, he is examining, he is looking for access. He is trying to determine Where resistance is weak and where an opening has been created for him to strike. The enemy is looking for vulnerabilities.
He's waiting for you to say something out of your mouth so that these monitoring spirits can record every single word that you say and take this information back to him so that when they find the opening, The enemy can strike. The enemy does not attack every person in the same way.
He studies the individual. He studies the family, the entire family. He studies the environment. He studies the history. He studies what has worked before.
He studies what produces fear, what produces—
Hatred, what produces anger, what produces rage. He studies what causes you to respond negatively. He studies what creates discouragement. He studies what weakens your prayer life. He studies what disrupts your focus. Then he forms a strategy around the information he has gathered from these monitoring spirits.
He Uses his strategy to attack and strike families. An uninformed enemy must search for an opening.
An informed enemy already knows where to apply pressure. So when we look at the case of Job, Job gives us a clear picture, a spiritual observation. When Satan appeared before the Lord, God asked, Where he had been. Satan replied.
What did he reply?
That he had been moving throughout the earth. He had been going back and forth. He had been walking through the land. He was not inactive. He was observing. When God mentioned Job, Satan was already familiar with Job. Job's condition. Satan knew Job was prosperous. He knew Job was— that Job possessed livestock. He knew Job loved God. He knew Job had servants. He knew Job had children. He knew Job had a spouse. He knew Job's work had been blessed by God. He even knew there was a divine hedge of protection Surrounding Job and his household and his possessions.
Satan asked, has not thou made an hedge about him?
Him being Job. And about his house and about all that he hath on every side. Why?
Because he had been monitoring Job. Satan recognized the hedge Because Job had been monitored. He knew protection existed because he had examined Job's life.
Yes.
He knew Job was blessed because he had observed the evidence.
He knew what Job valued because he had studied what surrounded him.
He knew Where to apply pressure because he had gathered information about Job through these monitoring spirits. Satan is not omnipresent, so he can't be at all places at all times, just like God. So he uses monitoring spirits and familiar spirits. But there is another truth here. The enemy saw the hedge, but he did not have authority to cross it. He observed Job, but he did not own Job.
He wanted access.
Access. Can you say that? Access. But he still required permission from God. Monitoring provided information. It did not make Satan sovereign. Let me say that again. Monitoring provided information to Satan, but it did not make Satan sovereign.
And this is important.
The enemy might know something about you and your family, but knowledge is not ownership.
He might recognize your weakness, but recognition is not authority over the believer. Whoever is born of God overcometh the world.
And he might understand your life or your history, but your history does not determine your future. God remains in control. And I wanna give you another case study, the case of Samson. Now consider Samson.
The Philistines had a problem on their hand. They could not defeat him in open conflict. They could not match his strength. They could not restrain him through ordinary force. Every time they tried to capture him or bound him, every attempt to confront him directly ended in their failure and demise.
So they stopped Concentrating on Samson's strength and began searching for information about its source.
They did not need to become stronger than Samson. They needed to learn how Samson could be weakened.
The strategy changed from confrontation to investigation.
Delilah became the source of access for demonic powers to influence or gather this information from Samson. She was close enough to ask personal questions. She was close enough to study Samson's responses.
She was close enough to recognize when he was withholding Information.
As she was under inspiration of this demonic influence, she was an agent for the enemy.
She was a secret agent for the enemy. She continued questioning him, seeking information for these monitoring spirits to write down so that this information could be disseminated To those leaders to defeat this man of God.
She wanted to know what made him strong. She wanted to know how he could be bound.
She wanted to know how he could be brought under the control of his enemies. Samson gave false answers at first.
Yes.
He toyed with her.
Each answer was tested. Every time Samson provided new information, the Philistines prepared themselves according to what he had said. They did not dismiss his words.
She recorded everything Samson said and reported it back to the enemy. And they acted upon them. Eventually, the pressure became more and more intense. The pressure became effective. Delilah was able to gather information from Samson— get this— without even sleeping with him.
Yes.
Samson exposed the private matter connected to his consecration. Delilah recognized that he had finally opened his heart. She contacted the Philistine rulers and said, I have the information. I monitored him intensely, and I have the information you require. They returned with payment and a plan and a strategy. While Samson slept, the sign of his consecration Was removed. The Philistines entered because the information they had been seeking was finally available. They didn't defeat Samson because their muscles became stronger. They defeated him because their knowledge, their information was precise. They learned what To target. And this is what monitoring spirits do. They gather this intel, they gather this information, they learn when to move.
They learned who could provide access to the vessel of God.
They learned how to use a relationship against a heavenly assignment. Samson's public strength was attacked through private disclosure by him talking and running his mouth. The enemy often searches for someone close enough to hear what your opposition could never learn from a distance. This is why closeness must not be confused with loyalty.
Access must not be confused with love. Giving people access to the life of an anointed believer is dangerous, particularly when they don't have your best interests in mind, because interests must not be confused with guidance and support. Repeated questions must not always be interpreted as innocent curiosity. You must discern why certain people need certain information, why they go back and forth giving details, gathering information. What are they asking? What are they doing? Are they trying to bring gossip? The Bible talks about this, about people that sow discord because they are trying to taint the vessel and the anointing That's upon your life? Why are they asking? Why are they bringing information? Why are they— why are they gathering information?
What will they do with the answer once they get it? How have they handled sensitive information in the past? Have they protected you? Have they prayed for you? Have they shown spiritual maturity? Have they demonstrated loyalty when your name was not in the room? Samson had strength, but he had failed to guard access.
You need spiritual power, but you also need spiritual wisdom, discernment, and judgment.
And here's another case study I want you guys to examine about these monitoring spirits and how they record information. Let's look at the case Of Herod, King Herod. When Jesus was born, Herod received troubling information.
The Magi arrived asking, where is he that is born King of the Jews? That question alerted Herod.
A king had been born.
Prophecy was moving toward fulfillment of this King of the Jews. Something significant had taken place. Herod immediately began gathering information, gathering details. He summoned the religious leaders of his day and asked where the Messiah was expected to be born. They identified Bethlehem. Herod now had a location.
Then he privately questioned the Magi about when the star first appeared.
He now had a timeline. He gathered a title. He gathered a location. He gathered a time. Then he developed a strategy, a plan of destruction, a plan to attack. Herod told the Magi to find the child and report back to him. He pretended that he wanted to worship. His words sounded spiritual, but his motives were murderous. He did not need the Magi to know his true intention. He needed them to provide the final piece of information, but God interrupted the flow of intelligence. The Magi were warned not to return to Herod. Joseph was warned to take Mary and the baby, baby Jesus, into Egypt. Herod had information, but God Gave direction. God gave direction and a plan and a strategy to overcome the plots of the enemy. Herod developed a strategy, but God preserved the promise. Herod sent destruction, but he could not destroy the Messiah. The enemy was gathering details. God was giving instructions. This teaches you why obedience matters in spiritual warfare. God might tell you to move without explaining every danger. You must move, child of God, even though you don't have all the details. And sometimes God can't explain to you all the details because the danger and threat that's upon your life. God might tell you to remain silent without identifying everyone who is listening. God might close a relationship because someone has gained too much access to your life. God might interrupt a plan because the enemy has prepared an attack around information already released. Obedience protects you when you don't possess every detail. Let's look at the case study of Hezekiah. Hezekiah teaches us about the danger of unnecessary exposure. Representatives from Babylon arrived with letters and a gift because they had heard that Hezekiah was healed. Their visit appeared respectful.
Their attention pleased Hezekiah.
He welcomed them and showed them what he possessed. He showed them silver. He showed them gold. He showed them precious oils. He showed them spices. He showed them weapons. He showed them the treasures of the kingdom. He revealed the resources of the nation and the strength of its defenses. Nothing remained concealed. The visitors did not force their way inside. Hezekiah, through his pride and arrogance, opened the doors. They did not steal. The information, he volunteered it. They did not break into the treasury. They received a guided tour from Hezekiah. Pride granted access that wisdom should have restricted. Some people lose protection because they feel compelled to display everything, every blessing that God has given them, not knowing that monitoring spirits are watching, taking notes. Everything that God has given you does not need to be revealed. They want others to know what they own. They want others to know how God has blessed them, what they're planning. They want others to know who they are connected to.
I know this person.
They love name-dropping. They want others to know how much progress they have made. They expose their resources because attention makes them feel important or vital or exclusive. But everything God gives you does not belong on display. You don't need to reveal every financial increase. You don't need to explain every business strategy. You don't need to discuss every ministry plan. You don't need to announce Every relationship. You don't need to expose every place where you remain emotionally vulnerable.
A person's entrance in your life could be dangerous, and a person's interest in your treasury does not prove commitment to your future. When you look at the case of Jesus, At the baptism in Matthew chapter 3, at baptism of Jesus, the Father spoke openly, this is my beloved Son in whom I'm well pleased.
Jesus' identity was declared publicly by his Father. Then Jesus entered the wilderness and fasted. After 40 days, he was hungry. The tempter came and approached him and said, if thou be the Son of God, command that these stones Be made bread.
The temptation included 2 pieces of information as his monitoring spirit recorded it, that he was declared the Son of God by his Father, and he had fasted 40 days and 40 nights. 2 pieces of information.
What had been spoken about Jesus, what had become visible in Jesus. The Father had declared that Jesus was his Son. Hunger had had become physically evident. Satan joined the declaration to the condition that Jesus had a vulnerability.
He was hungry. And then he wanted to challenge his identity.
If you are the Son of God, use your power to satisfy your hunger. The enemy challenged what God has spoken and applied pressure where Jesus had a physical need.
Jesus refused to respond from insecurity. He did not perform to provide his identity. He did not allow hunger to control his obedience.
He answered with the word of God.
There's the key to defeat the enemy.
You must respond with the word of God, not your emotions, not your feelings, but with the word of God, beloved. Jesus showed us that the enemy might possess information Without gaining control over you. Satan knew Jesus was hungry. Hunger did not rule him. Satan repeated what had been spoken about his identity.
The question did not confuse him.
Satan offered a course of action.
Jesus refused to follow it.
Information only becomes a weapon when it finds agreement, fear, or pride.
Or disobedience.
Or an unguarded opening. Your words matter. Words carry information. Say this with me, why your words matter. Because words carry information. When you speak, you reveal what you value. You reveal what you fear. You reveal what you expect. You reveal what you are planning. You reveal where you are going. You reveal what has hurt you. You reveal who has disappointed you. You reveal the areas where you feel uncertain. This does not mean you must stop speaking. It means you must stop speaking carelessly. You must use discretion. Discretion is part of spiritual warfare. Before you disclose something important, ask yourself, has God released me to speak? Because monitoring spirits Are recording this information? Is this the proper time? Is this person trustworthy? Does this person need information? Am I seeking counsel or am I seeking attention through pride and arrogance? Will speaking protect the assignment or expose the assignment upon my life? Has this person demonstrated maturity? Will this person pray, or will this person repeat what I said? There are matters you should carry in prayer before you carry them into conversation. There are plans you should develop before you disclose them. There are opportunities you should secure before you announce them. There are relationships you should allow to mature before you expose them publicly. There are victories you should protect Before you celebrate them openly. Everything does not require an audience. Everyone does not require an explanation. You must start recognizing the strategy of the enemy. Your life is being observed. Your decisions reveal patterns. Your habits create a history. Your conversations disclose information. Your emotional reactions identify pressure points. Your relationships Reveal channels of access. Your repeated struggles reveal areas that still require healing, discipline, prayer, and deliverance. Monitoring spirits study current activity. Familiar spirits recognize established patterns. The enemy uses both observation and familiarity to plan attacks against the believer. But you don't have to cooperate with the strategy. You can interrupt the pattern. You can close the opening. You can end the conversation. You can establish boundaries. You can change your response. You can refuse to repeat what defeated previous generations were defeated by. You can submit every vulnerable area to God. You can walk in wisdom. You can remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit.
Spiritual maturity does not require you to become afraid of everyone. It requires you to become responsible with access. You don't have to accuse people. You need to examine fruit. You do not have to withdraw from every relationship. That's not what I'm saying. You need to establish boundaries. You don't have to broadcast every blessing.
You need to know when God has released you to speak.
You don't have to answer every question. You need to protect what God has entrusted to you. Job teaches us that the enemy studies what carries God's favor. Let me say that again. Job teaches us that the enemy studies what carries God's favor. Samson teaches us that private access can threaten public strength. Herod teaches us that the enemy gathers details to develop a timeline of attack. Hezekiah teaches us that pride can expose what wisdom should protect. Jesus teaches us that information does not give the enemy control over a life submitted to God. So guard your conversations, guard your access, guard your private matters, guard your relationships, guard your plans, guard your consecration, guard the assignment God has placed upon your life.
Don't live afraid, live alert.
Don't become paranoid, become discerning. Do not allow pressure to force disclosure. Do not permit excitement to override the wisdom and judgment of God. Do not give unrestricted access to people who have not demonstrated loyalty.
The enemy studies what you reveal.
God gives you wisdom concerning what to protect. Speak with purpose. Move with discernment. Pray before you announce. Listen before you respond. Obey when God tells you to remain silent. Your assignment deserves protection. Your future deserves discipline. What God is developing in you does not require premature exposure. Guard the information. Protect the assignment upon your life. Finally, give the enemy nothing he can use. Defeat monitoring spirits and familiar spirits. Don't allow them to gather information because your mouth has diarrhea, but speak with clear judgment, discernment, and the wisdom of God. Be blessed until next time, in Jesus' name. My name is Pastor Harry Pitts. God bless you, in Jesus' name. See you next time.
