In this segment of his sermon, Harry Pitts defines the biblical role of a prophet as a bearer of divine revelation that operates in three temporal dimensions: recalling hidden truths of the past, declaring God’s counsel for the present, and preparing people for future events. He emphasizes that prophetic authority stems from alignment with the Holy Spirit, God’s will, and Scripture—not from personal charisma or eloquence. Pitts illustrates his points with the case study of Moses, citing Exodus 7:1 and Deuteronomy 18:15‑18 to show Moses as the archetypal prophet who functioned as both lawgiver and covenant spokesperson for Israel.

When we say a prophet speaks forth, then we mean this. They are entrusted with divine revelation that touches the past, recalling hidden truths, and touch the present, declaring God's counsel here and now. And they touch the future, preparing for what is yet to come. A prophet is not simply a predictor. They are an interpreter of reality through God's lens, summoning people to obedience. Their authority is not found in their volume or eloquence or charisma, a charismata, but in their alignment with God's Spirit, God's will, and God's word. For his people. Let's consider some case studies. Moses was both lawgiver and covenant spokesman according to Exodus chapter 7, verse 1, and Deuteronomy chapter 18, verses 15 through 18. Moses representing prophets as foundational voices in Israel's history.
