In this sermon, Pastor Keith (Speaker A) teaches that the Holy Spirit is a personal, divine being who works in believers in two distinct ways: the Spirit Within (indwelling at salvation) and the Spirit Upon (empowering believers for ministry). He explains that the indwelling Spirit seals believers, guarantees their salvation, and sanctifies them, while the empowering Spirit is received repeatedly through a "filling" that produces boldness, intercession, edification, and revelation. Biblical examples from John, Romans, Ephesians, Acts (Pentecost, Samaria, Cornelius, Ephesus, and Acts 4:31) illustrate the pattern of the Spirit’s arrival and the visible sign of speaking in tongues. The sermon clarifies that the gift of tongues operates in three modes: a private prayer language, a corporate prophetic gift requiring interpretation, and a miraculous earthly language. The pastor emphasizes that the Spirit’s filling is renewable, not a one‑time event, and that each filling equips believers for spiritual power. He concludes with an altar call inviting listeners to accept Christ, a practical invitation to join 514 Grace Church, and a fundraising appeal for the ministry.

This program is brought to you in part by the friends and partners of 514 Grace Ministries. Coming up next on the Grace Nation broadcast, who the Holy Spirit is. Some people say what?
Yeah. Turn it up. Can't have. Talk loud. One name, one sound. Who we call? Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, who still reigns. Jesus, Jesus, we shout one name. Jesus, Jesus, chains snap when we call that name. We lift one name. Jesus, Jesus, hell backs up when we praise. We shout one name. Jesus, Jesus, walls fall, giants hit the ground. We lift one name. Jesus, Jesus, King of Glory, wear your crown.
Light hit the dark, now the night gotta move. Fire Incredibly important because we're going to be teaching. Um, from a series on the Holy Spirit. There are a lot of people that understand, or at least think they understand, who the Holy Spirit is. Some people say what the Holy Spirit is. So, I want to start this morning, uh, first by giving you the title of this lesson. Who is the Holy Spirit? And it is, The Spirit Within, The Spirit Upon, and the Language He Gave Us. The title of this message— and for those of you that are watching us online, the title of this message is, The Spirit Within, The Spirit Upon, and the Language He Gave Us. I want to start this morning by telling you what I am not going to do. I'm not going to push you. I'm not going to embarrass you. I'm not going to put you in a corner. So, if you're— if you've ever been in a service where somebody or someone was made to feel less than because they did not have a certain experience, I'm sorry about that, and I apologize, because that should've never happened.
Amen.
To one single person. And that is not what is going to happen this morning, here in this church. Today, we are going to open the Bible. We're going to read what is actually said. We're going to take our time, and whatever you decide at the end of the sermon is between you and your Heavenly Father. I'm preaching this for multiple people. this morning, particularly today, and one of them has never been taught anything about the Holy Spirit beyond the fact that he does exist. Nobody ever sat you down and explained him to you.
That's right.
The other one was warned about this Holy Spirit. Pastor Keith, somebody Told them that this is real spooky.
Amen.
You've heard that word before, spooky. And I know those of you that are watching us, you've heard that expression before when it comes to the Holy Spirit. Somebody you loved and respected told you that some of what we are about to read in the Bible is very dangerous, or fake, or not for today. So, you close the door on it. You shut your mind. You don't even listen to it or consider what was spoken. And you've lived a long time on the other side of that door, and you're tired. You know that there's something more for you. You know that there's something about this God that you know and love. So, listen to me. I want both of you to hear me. We're going to jaywalk through the Scriptures very slowly. We're going to read the Bible together, and nothing I say to you today is going to require you to take my word for it.
Amen.
You're going to see it with your own eyes in the Bible, in the Scripture, in the text that we're going to read. So, let me start with the simplest thing the Bible says about the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is a person. He is a person, not a feeling, not energy, not a vibe, a person. Jesus called him He, H-E, never it. Jesus said in John 14, I will pray the Father and He shall give you another Comforter. that he may abide with you forever.
Amen.
That word is a different word in the word— in the Greek language. It is the word allos, and you spell it A-L-L-O-S. It means another of the same kind.
Amen.
Jesus was saying, I'm leaving, but the Father is sending you someone exactly like me to be with you. The Holy Spirit is the same kind of person as Jesus, just without a physical body. And he was sent to live with you and in you. If you remember nothing else from this morning, remember that portion. The Holy Spirit is a person. who wants to be with you.
Amen.
Now, the Bible teaches us something about this person that most of us were never taught. The Holy Spirit comes in 2 different ways. 2, not one. He comes in 2 different ways. 2, not one. The first way is the Holy Spirit within. The second way is the Holy Spirit upon. The first way is the Holy Spirit within.
Amen.
The second way is the Holy Spirit upon. I'm going to spend the rest of this sermon walking you through both of these, and I'm going to show you what the second one produces, and then I'm going to open the door. So stay with me this morning. Let's talk about the Holy Spirit within. The first way The Holy Spirit comes to a person, is within. He moves inside of you. He takes up residence in your spirit. The Bible word for this is indwelling. Somebody shout, say, indwelling.
Indwelling.
He dwells in you. This happens at the moment you give your life to Jesus, at the very moment you are saved.
Yes. Hallelujah.
Immediately, he moves in. He brings all of his luggage, his furniture, and he moves in, and he lives inside of you, and he lives inside of me.
Amen.
The moment you put your trust in Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes inside of you and begins to live there.
Yes.
He never leaves. He is sealed inside of you.
Amen.
Sealed inside of you. Listen to how Paul says it in Romans 8. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. Paul is saying, if you are saved, the Holy Spirit lives inside of you. Simply that. If he does not live inside of you, you are not saved.
That's right.
I can't make it any plainer than that. That is how foundational this is. The Holy Spirit within is salvation itself. Jesus said it like this in John, verse— John chapter 14, verse 17. John chapter 14, verse 17. He said, the Spirit dwelleth with you and shall be in you. With you and in you. There is with and there is an in.
Amen.
Let me say that again. There is a with and there is an in. The disciples had been with the Holy Spirit for 3 years because they had been with Jesus. But Jesus said the day is coming when he will be in you. Amen. That day came at Pentecost in the book of Acts, and it has been happening to every believer ever since then. So when you got saved, the Holy Spirit moved inside of you. He sealed you. Ephesians chapter 1, verse 13 says this: Ephesians chapter 1, verse 13. If you can't find it, say, help me, Lord. If you don't know where it is, look in your index. The index is at the very front of your Bible, and it'll give you the page number. That's Ephesians chapter 1, verse 13. In whom also, after that ye believed, you were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise. There it is. You were sealed like a letter sealed with wax. The Spirit inside of you is God's mark that you belong to Him. That is the Holy Spirit within.
Yes.
It is for salvation.
Hallelujah.
It is for sonship. It is for the inner life.
Yes.
The conviction of sin, the witness that you are a child of God. It is for progressive sanctification, meaning God setting you aside. And it is for the slow work of making you more like Jesus on the inside. Oh, that's a wonderful thing. Everyone who is saved has this.
Amen.
If you were saved this morning, the Holy Spirit is inside you right now at this very moment. You are not waiting for him to arrive. He is already here and present.
Amen.
That's number one, the Holy Spirit upon. Now, here is what most of us were never taught. Me included. The Holy Spirit has a second way of coming to a believer, and it is different from the first. The Bible calls it the Holy Spirit upon, U-P-O-N, the Holy Spirit upon. Now the Greek language has two different little words for this, E-N, E-N. En means in. The English language— in the English language, we use the word I-N, in.
Yes.
The Greek word is the word E-N, and it means— it means inside, in you.
Yes.
Now, there is a second word, a Greek word. It is the word epi, E-P-I, and it means— in the English language, it means upon. Upon smeared upon you, just like you spray off when mosquitoes are on your skin. The Spirit of God is upon you operating, and Jesus said, "For the Spirit of the Lord is upon me because He has what called me. He has anointed me." Now listen to me: They are not the same word, or they they do not function the same. They are 2 different prepositions, and the Bible uses them deliberately this way. I'm going to show you something now that once you see it, you cannot unsee it. Amen. And I want you to track this with me carefully because this is the foundation of everything that I'm teaching today. Jesus himself had both. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit according to Luke chapter 1, verse 35. The angel told Mary, the Holy Ghost shall come upon thee.
Amen.
Epi, he shall come upon thee. There it is, epi, E-P-I, upon thee. This is what the Word says, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee. So, Jesus had the Holy Spirit in his life from the very first moment of his existence in his mother's womb. The Holy Spirit was in him. He grew up filled with the Spirit. He had the Spirit within. Are you with me?
Yes.
Somebody say amen. That lets me know that you're listening. I know that we're quiet this morning, so thank you. But Jesus did not perform Listen to this. We can support this with Scripture. Jesus did not perform a single miracle, did not preach a single sermon, did not heal a single person until He was 30 years of age.
Amen. Why?
Because something else had to happen first. He went down to the Jordan River. John Baptized him.
Amen.
He came up out of the water, and the Bible says in Luke chapter 3, verse 22, and the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him. Epi.
Amen.
There it is again. The Holy Spirit descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him. Epi. There it is. The very next chapter, Luke chapter 4, verse 1, says, Jesus, being full of the Holy Ghost, returned from Jordan. From that moment forward, he began his ministry.
Amen.
Peter explains exactly, he explains exactly what happened at the Jordan in Acts chapter 10, verse 38. He says how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power.
Amen.
Who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil, for God was with him.
Yes.
What happened? Anointed. Anointing is something that comes upon you.
Yes, yes.
You're— you see, you pour oil Excuse me. You pour oil upon a person's head. The Spirit came upon, epi, Jesus. It came upon him, epi. The Greek word is epi, which means upon Jesus at the Jordan. And from that moment, he had power.
Yes.
Ah, you say, Pastor, listen to me. If Jesus, the Son of God, The one conceived by the Spirit, the one who was full of the Spirit from the womb. If he, if even he needed the Holy Spirit, the Son of God needed the Holy Spirit to come upon him before he could begin his ministry, then how much more do we need the Holy Spirit? This is the second way the Spirit comes upon.
Why?
For power!
Amen.
Dunamis power. For power, for exousia, for ministry, for witness, for boldness, for the supernatural function of the believer. Jesus told the disciples about this on the night before he died. He said in John 14, the Spirit shall be in you. But in Acts chapter 1, right before he went back to heaven, he said something different. Acts chapter 1, verse 8, but ye shall receive receive power after that Holy Ghost is come upon you. Upon you, epi. Somebody shout, epi! You learned some Greek this morning. Same word that was used for Jesus at the Jordan was the same word that was used in the book of Acts. He told them, do not leave Jerusalem.
Wait.
Wait until the Holy Ghost comes upon you, epi.
Epi.
Then you will have power, and then you will be witnesses. So they waited, 120 of them, in an upper room. For 10 days they prayed, they waited. And then in Acts 2, something happened. I want to read this slowly because this is the day the church was born. Amen. Acts 2, Acts chapter 2, verses 1 through 4. This is the day the church was born. Listen to this. And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. Not some of them, it sat upon each of them. And they were all, filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Hallelujah. Amen.
Look at what just happened. The Spirit came upon them.
Yes.
The fire sat upon each of them. They were filled with the Holy Ghost, and the first thing that came out of their mouths was a language they had never learned This is the Holy Spirit upon.
Amen.
And from this day forward in the Bible, every single time you see this happen to a group of people or an individual, the same thing follows every single time. Let me show you. Acts chapter 8. Philip the Evangelist goes down to Samaria. He preaches Jesus. People get saved. They get water baptized. They have the Holy Spirit within because they are saved. But the apostles in Jerusalem hear what is happening, and they send Peter and John down to examine what's taking place in Samaria.
Yes.
They sent them to Samaria because the Samaritans had not yet received the Holy Spirit upon them. Listen to Acts chapter 8, verse 15 through 17. Listen to this. Who, when they were come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Ghost. Peter and John prayed for them, for as yet he was fallen upon none of them. Only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then laid they their hands Holy Ghost.
Amen.
The Bible distinguishes the two. They were already saved. They were already baptized in water, but the Holy Spirit had not yet fallen upon them. Peter and John lay hands on them and the Spirit comes upon them. The Spirit comes upon them and something so visible happens that a man named Simon, Simon the Sorcerer, who had been a sorcerer before he got saved, offers Peter money to get the same exact power. When Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, currency. Simon said, man, I got to have this stuff.
Amen.
visibly powerful that Simon said, I got to have this right now.
Yes, indeed.
He saw something. The text does not specifically name tongues here, but something visible and powerful was happening when the Spirit came upon those Samaritans. Simon said, man, I got to have this.
Yes.
Acts chapter 10, Cornelius is a Gentile, a Roman centurion. God sends Peter to his house to preach the Gospel. Peter is preaching, and right in the middle of the sermon, the Spirit falls. Acts 10, verse 44, while Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all of them which heard the the word. How did Peter know? Verse 45 and 46 says this: And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues. and magnify God.
Glory.
Ah, they heard them speak with tongues. That was evidence. Peter then goes back to Jerusalem and defends what happened. And in Acts 11, he says, the Holy Ghost fell on them as on us at the beginning. As on us at the beginning, he is referring back to Pentecost. Same experience, same evidence. Acts chapter 19, Paul comes to Ephesus. He finds about 12 disciples there, and the first question he asked them is very interesting, Pastor Keith. Hmm.
Say it.
Very interesting. Acts 19, verse 2. Listen at what he says. Acts 19, verse 2. He said unto them, have ye received The Holy Ghost since ye believed.
Amen.
Notice the question, since ye believed. Paul assumed they had already believed. He was asking whether something additional had happened after they believed.
Amen.
He was asking about the Spirit upon them. They said, we have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. So Paul teaches them, baptizes them in water, and then, then in verse 6, and when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them and they spake with tongues and prophesied. They glorified God. Same pattern, Spirit upon Amen. Oh, you guys will be okay. The baby is giving God glory. Don't worry about the baby. Thank God for the baby. So when you read the book of Acts honestly, you see something you cannot explain. Every time a group of believers receives the Holy Spirit upon them in the way Jesus promised in Acts chapter 1, verse 8, the most consistent Visible sign is that they speak in tongues. Pentecost, tongues. Samaria, something so dramatic, Simon offered cash money for it. I'm not talking about the label. Simon offered cash money.
Yeah.
Cornelius, tongues. Ephesus, tongues. This is the pattern. I'm not making this up. I'm not pulling this out of the sky. I'm not being dramatic. I'm reading what the Bible, what your Bible says. Now the Holy Spirit and the languages he gave us is something that we've got to listen to. Now I have to take a minute and clear some things up because if I don't do this, the rest of this sermon will not make sense to many of you.
Amen.
The Bible talks about tongues in 3 different ways. Listen to me, those that are watching us online, and most of the confusion in church about this gift comes from people mixing the 3 things up. God, Lord, have mercy. Those of you that are teaching, please teach this word with excellence and with clarity and with understanding. The first way is Tongues. We just read about that in Acts. A prayer language given by the Spirit when he comes upon you. A language between you and God. Now I got to hit the gas because we got to get through this. And we're going to focus on this one in one minute, okay? The second way is what Paul talks about in 1 Corinthians 14 as a ministry gift for the church gathering. Somebody stands up and speaks a message in tongues, and somebody else has to interpret it for the congregation. This is a public gift, and Paul gives strict rules about when and how it can be used. If there is no interpreter, the person is told to keep silent. The third way is what happened at Pentecost in Acts 2 when the Spirit fell and the disciples spoke in tongues, that turned out to be actual earthly languages that the foreign visitors themselves recognized. People from 16 different nations heard their own language being spoken by Galilean fishermen. That was a miracle of communication. 3 different operations, same gift. Just like one person can speak quietly to a friend, can give a public lecture, and can call across a stadium. Same voice, 3 different uses. Are you with me so far? Okay. When I'm talking today about praying in tongues for personal use, I'm talking about the first one.
Yes.
A prayer language between you and God, not a public message, not a missionary tool, a private conversation between you, your spirit, and the Father. Now let me show you why this matters, because this is where so many of us have missed it right here. Minister Philia, Pastor Tracy, this is where many of us miss it. 1 Corinthians 14, verse 2. He that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God, for no man understandeth him. Howbeit in the Spirit, in the Spirit he speaketh mysteries. Look at that verse carefully. When you pray in tongues, you're not talking to people. You are talking to God. Nobody in the room understands you.
Amen.
But in the Spirit you are speaking mysteries. The Greek word for mysteries is there. It's right there in front of us. It is the Greek word mysteria. You spell it M-Y-S-T-E-R-I-A. Mysteria. It means things that are hidden. Things only God knows. When you pray in tongues, you are speaking the hidden things of God. back to God himself.
Amen.
1 Corinthians 14:4, he that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself. Edifies is the Greek word oikodomeo. You spell it O-I-K-O-D-O-M-E-O. It is a building word. It literally means to construct a house, Brick by brick. When you pray in tongues, you are building yourself up like a builder erects a building, constructs a building block by block, wall by wall. You grow stronger and stronger. So just imagine, that means that if you put the work in, you put the time in, you're going to get stronger and stronger. This is why the enemy Fights this. He fights this gift because he knows that the church will be edified and become strong and gain strength and momentum. The word edifies is the Greek word "okedemoi." Don't forget that you grow stronger. You get stronger. Jude verse one. Now there's only one chapter in Jude. Jude verse one. Listen at what it says. But ye believe. Excuse me. But ye, beloved, building up yourselves in your most holy faith— what? Praying in the Holy Ghost. Same building word, same instruction. Pray in the Holy Spirit and you will be built up in your most holy faith. That is why the prayer language matters. It is not a performance. It is not a show. It is a private way that the Spirit inside of you builds the inner man stronger every time you use it.
Amen. Amen.
Now I want to show you the deepest thing about it, and then we'll move forward. Romans 8:26, likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities, for we know not what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Stop right there. Paul says sometimes you do not know what to pray. You are facing something, something so deep, something so complicated, so painful. You do not have the words. Your mind cannot figure out the right prayer. You run out of English words. And in that moment, the Spirit inside you starts to pray through you with groanings that cannot be put into normal words.
Yes, that's right.
And the very next verse, verse 27, And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is in the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. The Holy Spirit knows how to pray the perfect will of God for your life. When you pray in the Spirit, the Spirit prays the perfect will of God through you.
Amen.
He knows the mind of God. You do not always know what to pray. But the Spirit does. He knows exactly what to pray and how to pray. He prays it through you in a language your mind does not have to translate. Your mind can understand it because it is something different. It is not from this world. That is the deepest secret of your prayer language. You do not have to know what you are saying. The Spirit knows. And what the Spirit Spirit prays through you is always, always, always, always, always, always the will, the perfect will of God. Have you ever been in a situation where you did not know what to ask for? Have you ever stood by a hospital bed and run out of, run out of English? Have you ever sat across from a teenager and not know what to say to God about them?
Yes.
Have you ever opened your mouth in prayer and nothing came out because the situation was too big for your words? You just— it just took your breath away. You just run out of language. You don't know what to say. Ah, but you need to pray in the Spirit. That is the moment the Spirit was given to you for, that very moment. He starts where your words in.
Yes.
Now, here's your hinge point. Gotta hit the gas, so stay with me. Acts 4:31. Now, I want to take you to one of the most important verses in the New Testament about the Holy Spirit, and most believers have never had it preached to them like this. The same people who were filled with the Spirit at Pentecost in Acts 2 are about to be filled again in Acts 4. Here is the context. Peter and John have healed a lame man. They have been arrested for it. They have been brought before the Jewish council, threatened, and told never to preach in Jesus' name again.
Right.
They came back to the church. They tell the believers what happened, and the whole church starts to pray. Acts 4:31, and when they had prayed, the place was shaken. Ah, where They were assembled together, and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. I want you to see what just happened. The same people were filled at Pentecost. They had already received the Holy Spirit. They had already spoken in tongues, but now in chapter 4, they were filled again. Same Greek word for filled. filled as in Acts 2:4. Same filling, new occasion.
Yes.
This is the verse that changes everything for those of you who have been here a long time and feel dry in your walk with Jesus. The filling is not a one-time event. It is a renewable experience. You do not get filled once at salvation and coast for the rest of your life. The Spirit fills and refills and refills again every time you come and ask. If you received the Holy Spirit upon you 20 years ago and you've not prayed in the Spirit in a decade, the door is not closed. The Father is not annoyed with you.
That's right.
The same filling is available again this morning. You do not have to start over. You have to come back to the well. Well and be refilled. And notice what the refilling produced. They spake the Word of God with boldness. They spake with boldness. Boldness, the Greek word is parresia, P-A-R-R-E-S-I-A. And what does it mean? Frank speech, fearless honesty, the kind of speaking that does not flinch when it costs you something. The refilling produces a mouth that is not afraid to speak truth to power.
That's right.
Now, I've got to give you this in a hurry as we hasten to a close. The 4 streams of power. 4 streams of power. Listen to this. Now, let me show you the things this empowerment produces in a believer's life. 4 streams that flow out of the Holy Spirit upon you. I'm telling you, these are advanced topics. These are basic but normal everyday operation of a Spirit-empowered Christian, and the church has done a terrible job of teaching this. So, if you're watching, follow us. Study this. The first stream is intercession, Romans chapter 8, verses 26 and 27, which we just read. The Spirit prays the will of God through you when you do not know what to pray. You become an intercessor without having to figure out what to say. The Spirit does the praying. You provide the vocal cords. You provide the voice. You provide the body, the instrument, the tool. Some of the most powerful prayers ever prayed on earth have been prayed by ordinary believers who were just praying in the Spirit.
Amen.
Not even knowing what they were praying for a while. On the other side of the world, someone was being delivered and healed because of your prayer. Somebody in Russia is being healed. Somebody in Pakistan is being healed or saved because of those prayers that you prayed right here in Georgia, or in California, or wherever you are. The second stream is edification. 1 Corinthians 14:4. Jude 20, you are built up. Your inner man is strengthened. When the outside is falling apart, the inside is being constructed.
Yes.
When you cannot sleep, when you are anxious, when the diagnosis just came in, when the marriage is shaking, you realize that the Spirit of God can bring unity.
Amen.
The third is for boldness. And finally, the fourth is for revelation. The Holy Spirit will illuminate your understanding and give you clarity of what God is trying to do in your Amen. This is where we need to understand that the Spirit of God gives us power, power to overcome the enemy, to bind and to loose, and to take authority in this realm, in the earth realm. Not only in the earth realm, but in the spirit realm. Bow your heads. Father, we thank you this morning for the Word of God that brings truth, Amen. Sanctification, boldness, strength, miracles, God. We thank you for Jesus our Savior. Holy Spirit, rest upon us. Live through us. In Jesus' name we pray, and everyone said amen. If you are watching us right now and you don't know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, consider this. Pray this prayer with me. Say, Lord, come into my heart. Jesus, save me. Father, I denounce anything that is not like you. Jesus, I want you to be my Savior. I want you to be my Lord. Forgive me for all the wrongs that I've done. Forgive me of the sins that I've committed. And Father, thank you. I do believe in the blood and that the blood has covered my past, my sins. Jesus, become my Lord and my Savior. Save me this day. And if you prayed that If you prayed that prayer with me, you are now born again. Welcome to the household of faith. Welcome to the family of God.
Amen.
