In this extended sermon, the lead pastor (Speaker A) explores the biblical narrative of Jabez (1 Chronicles 4:9‑10) and Jacob, using them as lenses to examine how names and labels given in childhood can become wounds that shape identity. He argues that while individuals are not responsible for the harmful names imposed on them, they are responsible for how they respond to those labels. The sermon outlines a three‑level framework: (1) the external label that creates a wound, (2) the internal agreement that turns the label into self‑identity, and (3) the confrontation with God that leads to reunification and a new divine identity. Practical steps are offered: forgive those who named you, renounce the agreement with false names, and repent from judging God based on unfinished seasons. The pastor connects these ideas to the Prayer of Jabez—asking God to enlarge territory and keep him from pain—showing how divine blessing can override human‑assigned identities. Throughout, worship responses (Speaker B) reinforce themes of kingdom authority and personal victory. The sermon culminates in a call to salvation, an invitation to join 514 Grace Church’s online and in‑person ministries, and a fundraising appeal, highlighting the church’s leadership (Pastor Keith, Ministers Ophelia, Tracy, Philia) and global outreach goals.
Chapters
This program is brought to you in part by the friends and partners of 514 Grace Ministries. Coming to Chronicles chapter 4, verse 9. Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had Named him Jabez, saying, "I gave birth to him in pain." Christ has given victory, power in the word of God, breaking every captivity.
I'm a citizen of heaven, redeemed at Calvary. Kingdom authority, Jesus reigns eternally. Kingdom authority, hell cannot silence me. The risen Lamb has conquered now; the enemy must. I'm a citizen of heaven, washed and made completely free. Kingdom authority, all the glory belongs to thee. I do not beg the night to leave. I lift the name that demons fear. Jesus is the light of life, and when he speaks, the path is clear. Grace is my covering, his Spirit is my flame. Truth is on my tongue, and there is power in his name. I'm seated with Christ, the serpent lies beneath. The cross has spoken, the tomb stands empty. I do not fight for victory.
Father, we thank you, God, for your presence. We worship you, God, in the Spirit. And the truth. Ah, bless you, Jesus. We need your anointing, your presence in this place. Thank you, God, for Jesus, our Savior. Thank you, Father. Thank you, God. Give God a hand clap of praise.
Amen.
I want to get started this morning with the Lord's business. Um, if you would turn your Bibles to 1 Chronicles chapter 4, verse number 9. We're going to start the lesson with 1 Chronicles chapter 4, verse 9. When I look at 1 Chronicles, I'm looking at a young man who experienced something no child should have ever in their life experienced, but it happened. And it was uncontrollable. He couldn't control it at all. 1 Chronicles chapter 4, verse 9. Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, I gave birth to him in pain. Verse number 10. Jabez cried out to God, to the God of Israel, oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory. Let your hand Be with me and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain. And God granted his request. Now, when I look at this text, we see that Jabez is born, but it is interesting that his mother Yes. Names him Pain. To be born and to be given a name, Pain— you have no choice in this, no say-so as to what your name is going to be, but you were born with a name, and the name is called Pain. How do you comfort someone every time they see you, they say, there comes Pain? There's pain. There he is. Look at him. Was it with his suicidal self? He's worthless. There comes pain. Every time they see you, they see pain. They gave you the name, but who gave you permission to keep repeating the name?
Daily.
Now I need, I need you to recognize what's going on with Jabez and the prayer that he prayed, because there's some recognition, there's responsibility, and there's transformation that needs to take place. We begin our lesson with injury. Neither Jabez, and I'm gonna talk about Jacob as well. Neither Jabez nor Jacob chose their names. Jabez's mother named him from her sorrow. I bear him in sorrow is what she said. Jacob, ah, Jacob's name came from one action at birth. He took his brother by the heel. Other people interpreted this by saying that he was a heel grabber. Ah, to begin your life And to know that you have this name placed upon you, what connects you to this name? How do you deal with this when people are calling you by this every single day? People that connect with this, they say there is a mistake, there's a problem, there is too sensitive. There she is, she's slow. There she is, she's too difficult. You're the black sheep of the family, the family failure, just like their father, just like their mother, no good, unwanted, unlovable, unstable.
That's right.
There comes instability. Poor, weak, trouble. Can you imagine hearing this every day of your life?
Yes.
You're not imagining what happened. Words spoken over children become burdens adults spend years trying to remove, the entirety of their life. Because of a word that was spoken over a child when they were younger. In their adulthood, they spend their entire life trying to remove this burden. You didn't choose the original label. Stay with me. You were too young to defend yourself when the name was given to you. I've met a young man one time when I was home on break from the military and we were playing cards. And I was blown away by what his mother named him. His mother almost died in birth when she gave him this name. And as a result of this, she said, because I almost died, you had to be the devil. She named him Lucifer. I thought that it was a joke, so I asked him, I said, I need to see your driver's license. And lo and behold, that was his first name. Can you imagine being in class and the teacher reads the roll and she gets down to L's and she says, Lucifer, are you present today?
No.
You didn't choose the original label. You were too young to defend yourself. You did not have the vocabulary to even challenge what your mother and father named you.
Amen.
You did not know that somebody else's frustration was becoming your introduction. When a child repeatedly hears— yes, when a child repeatedly hears this name. It becomes a burden to them. Every single day of your life you hear this. When you repeatedly hear this, the name moves through different stages— labels, titles— and then eventually it becomes your identity. Ah, at first the voice comes from the outside. The voice moves to the inside. Eventually nobody needs to call you a failure because you do it yourself, because you have now internalized what they have spoken over you. Nobody needs to tell you that you're unwanted because you interpret every disagreement as rejection. Nobody needs to tell you that you cannot succeed because you sabotage opportunities before anyone else gets the chance.
Amen.
The label becomes self-sustaining in and of itself. Here's the sentence That turns this sermon upside down. You're not responsible for what they called you. Listen to this, but you're now responsible for what you continue to answer to. You had nothing to do with the name that they gave you, but you are responsible for how you continue answering. to this name. That statement has to be delivered, and I had to deliver it, and I had to be very careful in saying this because there is some responsibility on your part.
Amen.
You don't continue to get to blame people when you can change the trajectory of your own life. There's a difference between responsibility for the wound and responsibility for healing. There's a difference. You might not be responsible for being wounded. You're responsible for what you do after God reveals the wound to you. This is why God's question to Jacob is so powerful. What is thy name? is what God asked Jacob. God knew Jacob's name already. The question was not informational, it was confrontational. God was forcing Jacob to say what he had been answering to his entire life.
That's right.
Jacob had to say, my name is Jacob. In that moment, he was confessing more than his name. Listen to this. He was admitting, I have been living according to the identity given to me. Yeah, I grabbed, I've grabbed, I've manipulated, I've deceived, I have run, I've spent years trying to obtain through human schemes what God's grace gave me freely. What you promised To give me God by your grace and mercy. Jacob could blame his family for the original name. Yes, he could. But he could not blame them for every decision he made under that name. That is the difference between the label being imposed and the label becoming an agreement. that you make. The central revelation of this lesson— you have to pay close attention to this— a label has limited power, Pastor Keith, limited power until you come into agreement with it.
That's right.
Your family might call you failure, but when you begin saying nothing ever works for me, you are continuing Their sermon over your life. Someone might call you unlovable, but when you begin rejecting healthy love because you expect abandonment, you are helping the label to survive in your life. Someone might call you trouble. They may call you failure, but when you use Ah, but when you use the label to excuse destructive behavior, you are no longer only carrying the name, you are protecting the name.
That's right.
Are you still angry at people for calling you something you now call yourself every day? Every day you call yourself failure. How healthy is that? Every day you say that you're suicidal. How healthy is that? You know, there is another level beyond self-naming. People named us according to what they experienced, and that's true. Have we been doing the same thing to God though? Jabez's mother experienced pain. and named her son from the pain she experienced. When we experience pain, we sometimes begin naming God from it. God has forgotten me. God does not care. God is punishing me.
Amen.
God helps everybody except me. God cannot be trusted. We start naming God based off of our circumstances. God brought me here to let me die. That sounds just like Israel. They wanted freedom, but they didn't want to do freedom on God's timeline. I agree.
I agree.
God has abandoned my family. Then they asked God to be free. Israel asked God to be free, and then they complained at the methodology in which God used to give them freedom. God is withholding something good from me. This is exactly what Israel did. Exodus 14, read it. They were in a frightening transition. They interpreted God through the fear of the moment. Why did you bring us into the wilderness to die, God? This is what they said to God. God had delivered them in Exodus 14. They named him their destroyer. God was leading them. They named him their abandoner. God was taking them toward freedom. They named him according to the discomfort of the transition they were going through. Here's a deeper revelation. We become offended when people name us from one painful moment, yet we sometimes name God from one painful season. Now that's the mirror. You're angry because your family formed an opinion of you before your life fully developed. Now some people say, well, Pastor, you didn't give us the title. This is a good point for me to pause and give you the title of the message. The title of the message is You Named Me Too Soon. You named me too soon. You named me too soon. You named me too soon. But have you formed an opinion of God before his plan fully unfolded and God gave you your divine purpose? God, did you name me too soon? Oh no, God didn't make a mistake. They name you too soon, but have you named God too soon. Body of Christ, listen to me. You called him absent because he had not answered you yet. You named God pain, and you called him absent because you're in a season where you think God forgot about you. Oh no, he heard you. You called him unfaithful because you were still in Transition. You named God too soon because he didn't respond the way you thought he should respond. God, are you there? Are you faithful? God had you in a season of transition and you thought God was unfaithful. You called him uncaring because he did not deliver you through the method You preferred. You said, Pastor, how can you preach on this? I've been through this. Ah, have you named God? The method didn't appear the way you desired. You wanted a preferred method. We were talking this morning about the officer when the prophet wanted. To cleanse him of his leprosy. And the servant said, listen to the man of God. And the officer said to the servant, is there clean water anyplace else? Why do I have to step in the muddy Jordan? And the servant said, if you want to be clean, you better step in that muddy water. Because the method— he didn't prefer that method. He wanted clean water. because of his title and his position and his status in life.
That's right.
You want God, uh, on your timeline, and then you say that God is absent because he doesn't answer the prayer when you want the prayer answered. You called it rejection. God called it redirection. You called it burial. God called it planting.
Yeah.
Uh, you called it blindness, but God said, I had to open your eyes to see. You named God pain, but God says, no, you're dying to your flesh. The 3 levels Yes. Level number 1, what people called you. This is where the wound begins. Listen to me. Level number 2, what you begin calling yourself. This is the agreement. Level number 3, what you begin calling God. Because of what happened in the season God placed you in. This is the spiritual crisis. The spiritual crisis takes place because now you're misnaming the thing that God wants to use, the tool, the methodology that he wants to use to bring you into one of the greatest seasons of your life. Are you listening to me? Are you here? And I need you to hear me closely because Jabez's response is beautiful. This sermon provides 3 corresponding acts of deliverance. Number 1, forgive people for naming you from their limitations.
Forgive them.
Number 2, renounce your agreement with the names God never gave you. God never gave you those names. Why do you continue to repeat what God never gave you? Number 3, repent from judging God through an unfinished season that he had you in At this time. And this is completely transformational if you write this down and don't place limitations on the God who has provided for you. Beloved, you're in the season where God is transitioning you to something far greater than you can even Fathom or imagine with your finite mind. But I love J-Baz's response, Minister Tracy. I love his response, Minister Philia. J-Baz does something remarkable, body of Christ. He does not argue with his mother. He does not spin the text trying to convince his family to call him something else. He takes the burden of the name to God. And Jabez called on the God of Israel because God understood. God understood what he was dealing with. God said, you are not limited by what man says. It only matters what I say. Amen. I love the kingdom teaching that Pastor Keith has shared with us a month or 2 months ago. There is no limitations in the kingdom. Only trust God, irregardless of how it looks. Jabez understood this, so he took it to God. Because if my name is going to be stronger than my future, I need someone greater than the person who named me. Ah, you call me pain. I need someone that's greater than the person that gave me the name. Greater is he That is what? In me than he that's in the world. Jabez does not ask his mother to reinterpret his birth. He asked God to interpret the consequences. Listen at what Jabez says. Bless me indeed. What is he saying? Bless me until my life contradicts the label that was handed to me, Pastor. Ah, that's why I love the kingdom teaching, because the kingdom, uh, redefines what the world has tried to label me as. Uh, Pastor Keith was saying, don't let the traditions of men hold you back, in simplistic terms, but take on the nature of the kingdom, the citizen mindset of the kingdom, because earth can't define what heaven controls. Remember, the earth is the Lord and the fullness thereof. So irregardless of whatever they name you, God has the final word. Ah, Jabez didn't ask God to change his name. He asked God to interpret the consequences. I love that. Bless me until my life contradicts my label. Then he goes on and he says, enlarge my coast. Do not let pain determine my boundaries. Don't allow pain to place limitations on me. The things you went through in life cannot place limitations on you. Yes, they hurt. Yes, they wounded you. Yes, you were embarrassed. But Dabas says this. He says, he says, don't let pain determine my boundaries. Let thine hand be with me. Place your hand on the life Others place their words upon, is what J-Bad says. All the words they placed upon me. God, place your hand on my life.
Yes.
Then he says, keep me from evil. Do not let the wound make me destructive. Don't let me self-sabotage my own purpose. Keep me from evil. Don't let the wound make me destructive. Then he goes on and says that it may not grieve me. Do not allow yesterday's pain to keep reproducing tomorrow in my life. The text does not record God changing Jabez's name no place. Instead, God changes what his name is allowed to produce in his life. That gives us this powerful line: sometimes God changes your name, other times he blesses you until the old name no longer fits who you are.
Amen.
I love Jacob's response. Jacob's situation is different. Jabez carries a name that does not match his character. The Bible calls him honorable. Jacob has begun living in agreement with his name. Therefore, Jabez needs his consequences interrupted. Jacob needs his character transformed. Listen to me, body of Christ. Jabez prays, but Jacob wrestles.
Yes.
Jabez asked God to keep pain from following him. Jacob must confront the patterns that have followed him. God does not tell Jacob your family was wrong and you did nothing. God asked, what is your name? Jacob must confess the identity before he receives a new one. This gives us another strong statement, family. God will come— will comfort you about what they did to you. Let me say that again. God will comfort you about what they did to you. But he will also confront you about what you became because of it. Yes, he'll confront you about what you became because of what they did to you. That is where healing becomes transformational. God's question to Jacob resembles another divine question. Genesis chapter three, verse eleven. Who told thee that thou was naked? Genesis three eleven. God knew Adam was already naked. He was exposing the voice Adam had believed. We can place the questions together. Who told you that? What is your name? Who gave you this identity? Whose voice are you repeating? Who convinced you that your wound was your name? Who told you that your failure was final? Who told you that being rejected made you worthless? Who told you that one divorce made you unlovable? Who told you that your family's history was your destiny? Who told you that God had abandoned you? The issue is not only what was said. The issue is whose voice received the authority over your life. Yeah, look at what they called me. Why am I still answering to this? Why am I still speaking to them when they call me this? What did God say? What does God call me? Should be the statement. You have a label. You have a label, you have agreement. You have agreement, you have confrontation. The confrontation, you have reunification, divine identity, new walk. Let me repeat that. The world gives you a label, but you got to be careful about the agreement. Then there's this confrontation, then reunification, and God's divine identity. And as a result of confronting these things You have a new walk. It all begins with a label, because if I can get you to believe what I said, then I can form you into my image. You'll be a failure, a loser all your life. There comes a loser.
You're right.
Don't you agree with me? You know I'm right. And you could easily say yes, but Jacob entered the encounter answering to Jacob. He left answering when he was wrestling with God. He said, oh God, God. He wrestled all night, but something happened. Jacob walked away limping. He walked away wanting The favor of God. But when he walked away and he left, he left not answering as Jacob. He left answering as Israel. But he was also limping, Pastor. This means a new identity does not erase the evidence of the struggle. Ah, yes. You might still remember what happened. You're going to be in a situation, but it's going to cost you something. There's going to be a struggle, but it's going to cost you something. You may walk away limping, but it's going to cost you something. But guess what? You won't call me that again because I'm going to beat it out of you. Yes, I'm going to beat it out of you. I remember what a world heavyweight champion said to one fighter. He said, your name is Cassius, he said, and he punched him, kept punching him. He said, what's my name? He said, I say your name is Cassius. And he punched him again, and he beat him again, and he beat him until he said, what's my name? He said, your name is Muhammad. Yeah, sometimes you got to get in a fight. You got to fight the good fight of faith. You're fighting a devil And the devil wants to call you loser. Say, what's my name, devil? What did God say my name is? Some highly favored. I said, say it loud. What is my name? And you beat him. The Bible says we wrestle. So that means that if we wrestle, that this is a fight. The Bible says to fight the good fight of faith, but our fight is not in the flesh. Our fight is in the spirit. So that means that I can pulverize the enemy until he acknowledges my name. Ah yes, what's my name? My name is not pain. This means a new identity is coming, man of God. Certain situations might still hurt. They may be painful. You might still have emotional tenderness in that area. You might still carry the scars, but the scars don't carry you. They don't control you. They don't dictate your outcome. The limp is not your identity. The evidence of the battle does not cancel the blessing in your life. And because you've been fighting doesn't mean that you're not going to get any scratches.
That's right.
Jesus fought on Golgotha so that sin's sting— death could no longer take our lives. The Bible says in the book of Isaiah that he was bruised for our transgressions. He was shamed. He was mocked. The devil thought he had him, but he fought. And he said, I'm gonna change their name. They will no longer be called sinners, but they'll be called the sons of Of the Most High God, El Elyon. Ah, have we done enough in the flesh to finally realize that we can't win this thing? Pastor Keith talked about the grace of God. Somebody shout grace! Somebody shout grace again! The grace of God, which gives us the superpower that we need to realize that we are born to win. You know that when you're born again, that you are born to win. If I'm born again, that means that I get a new beginning, Pastor. That I'm a new creation in Christ, that All things are passed away. My name changes. So when my name changes, my nature changes, my direction changes.
Hallelujah.
So yes, ah, you named me too soon because the name you gave me, I didn't choose it, but I get to choose the outcome. Yes, I was wounded by what others called me. I agreed for a little while with the label that they gave me, and I misjudged God through my pain. Those names were the worst moments in my life. As a young child, you were embarrassed. You are hurt, but yet it's still— God says that what the enemy meant for evil, God says, I'm going to use it for your good. They threw Joseph in the pit, then he was discovered in the pit and taken to Egypt. And as he was discovered in Egypt, he sat under one of the captains, Potiphar. And Potiphar noticed that this young man had a talent. And because of this gift that he had, Potiphar put him in charge of everything that was in his house. Then the enemy showed up and tried to rename him.
him.
Lust showed up and says, you're going to lie with me. You're going to sin against your God. And you're going to become a sinner. Joseph said, no. I love my God too much. And I'm not going to allow you to change my name. Said, I tell you what, if you don't want to give in to my temptation, Then I'm going to change your destiny. Joseph could have easily complained. Then he is lied upon, and he goes from Potiphar's house to the prison. Just stay with me; we're not going to be very long. He goes from Potiphar's house to the prison. Now the devil said, "I told you I was going to change your name." Guess what your name is now? You are called a criminal. So you're sitting there and said, God, you showed me that I was going to do great and marvelous things. But God never showed you the prison. So you call God abandonment. God, you've abandoned me. Then the butler and the baker show up. So the Pharaoh has a dream, and then as Joseph hears it, he interprets the dream. And the message gets back to the Pharaoh and says, there's one in prison that I met that interprets dreams. And the Pharaoh says, bring him to me. And then he speaks and he begins to tell the Pharaoh his dream. And as he says to him what he dreamed, he begins to interpret the dream. Now you go from the pit to Potiphar, from Potiphar to prison, from prison to the Pharaoh. Yeah, yeah, yeah, the devil thought he peed on you. Yeah, he thought he pee-peed on you. I'm not trying to be vulgar, but notice he goes from the pit to Potiphar, from Potiphar to the prison, from prison to the Pharaoh. The devil thought he pee-peed on Joseph, but God said, no, I, I got the final word. Then Pharaoh puts Joseph In charge, and he becomes second in charge in the kingdom—a superpower on planet Earth. And guess what? God gets the final P in this situation. God says, "I'm gonna make you powerful." Yes, Joseph saves an entire nation, Israel. In a, in a situation where there is famine. Yes, the progression and the pain is real, but don't allow the names to determine your outcome because they name many of you too soon. Many of you, you're just getting started on what God wants to do in your life. Don't give up. Don't quit.
Amen.
They called you failure, but guess what God says? I get the final F in this situation. Guess what they're going to call you? They're going to call you the finisher. Because everything that you do, you finish. They're going to call you the golden standard. You're the one that God has chosen. God chooses the most uncommon people, the most uncommon things. Then he uses a young man by the name of Jabez. Pain. Pain. Jabez has one of the most notarized prayers in the entire world, the Prayer of Jabez. People pray this: Lord, enlarge my territory. Yeah, you named me, but I get to declare The blessings of God over my life. Who am I? You're not pain. You're not who they declared you are. Bow your heads. Father, we thank you that you have the final say-so. We thank you for Jesus, our Savior, our Lord. You broaden Jabez's territory. You change Jacob's name to Israel. He's the son of God.
Amen.
Here it is, God. Many of us are sitting here because of names and titles that were placed on us, and we come to you, God, asking you to reverse every negative circumstance spoken over our lives. Cause us to be the head and not the tail, Jesus, above And not beneath. And Father, forgive us if we named you. God, we thank you for your loving kindness toward us, your peace toward us, your strength toward us. Thank you, God, for being patient. Thank you, God, for changing our name. Yes, there are wounds, and we know that you'll heal us. And Father, we want to say thank you for making us free. In the name of Jesus I pray, and everyone said amen. Give God a hand clap of praise this morning. If you don't know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, this is your opportunity. I want to have the leaders, if they would, come up. We want to Extend an invitation of salvation for those that are watching us online, social media, those that are present. You have an opportunity to change the lives of your family, to change the destiny of your family, to bring peace and strength and a future that only God can. give? Aren't you tired of losing? Aren't you tired of the path that you're walking down? If you want to win, choose Jesus. Pray this prayer with me. Say, Father, come into my heart. Jesus, become my Savior and my Lord. I believe that you died and rose for me. on Calvary, and on the 3rd day you were resurrected. And because of your resurrection, you're now seated in heavenly places, giving me the authority to become a son of God. I ask you to forgive me of my sins, my wrongs. Jesus, I ask you to come into my life.
Amen.
Jesus, I ask you to become my Savior and my Lord. I believe that the blood of Christ that was poured out on Calvary will forgive me of my sins, and I acknowledge you, Jesus, as my Savior, and I renounce Satan and all of his wrongs. God, cover my life with the blood of Christ. Thank you for redeeming me. Thank you for saving me. Jesus, I love you with all my heart, soul, and mind. I'm yours, Lord, and I give up the world, God, and I give you all of me. If you prayed this prayer, you are now born again. Welcome to the family of God. Thank you for supporting 514 Grace Church. And myself and the other leaders, we're teaching the word of God so that your life can be changed, so that your family's life can be elevated. And just know this, God wants the very best for every single one of us. Thank you. I pray that this word is a blessing to you. Come back next week. We're not done because there's more word to come. God bless you, and we'll see you next time. Be blessed in Jesus' name. Amen.
Yeah. I came to reclaim what the darkness stole. Every piece of my mind, every part of my soul. Not by my power, not by my might, by the blood of the Lamb I step into light. The fire did not break me, God carried me through. Every lie fell silent when he spoke.
What was true?
He restored my peace and commanded the sea. All glory to Jesus, the one who set me free. There is power in his name. There is freedom.
