Harry Pitts on Proverbs 18:14: your spirit is the foundation everything else rests on. When it's wounded, theology, spiritual gifts, even marriage can't hold you up. Solomon asked, "who can bear a wounded spirit?" because nothing can replace a healthy one.

What happens when the part of you that carries you is wounded? Like this in Proverbs 18:14, Solomon said, the spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity, but a wounded spirit, who can bear it? Hear that carefully. Your spirit is the thing that carries you when your body fails. The spirit is the thing that holds you up when the diagnosis comes, when the marriage trembles, when the job ends, when the child rebels. The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity. But what happens when the spirit itself is wounded? What happens when the load-bearing wall is the thing that is cracking or is cracked? Solomon does not answer the question. He just asked the question, who can bear? Because he knows when the spirit is wounded and unfed, nothing else can hold you. Your theology cannot hold you. Your gifting cannot hold you. Your platform cannot hold you. Your marriage cannot hold you because all of these things were designed to rest on the wall, not to replace it.
