Harry Pitts argues that distance from the Bible causes spiritual drift, a quiet separation that makes hearing God harder. Without regular Scripture engagement, prayer becomes confused and vision blurs. He cites Hosea 4:6 on destruction through lack of knowledge and Matthew 4:4 on living by God's word.

You cannot claim intimacy with God while avoiding the primary way he speaks. God speaks through his word. Point number 2, distance from the word of God produces separation and what I call spiritual drift. It's like a boat that drifts away. The further it gets The harder it is to hear or to even see. Spiritual drift doesn't happen suddenly or overnight. It happens quietly. It begins when prayer becomes irregular, when scripture becomes optional, when truth becomes negotiable. The Bible warns us clearly, my people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge, according to Hosea chapter 4, verse 6. Not destroyed by demons, not destroyed by persecution, destroyed by distance from the truth, from the Word of God. When the Word leaves the center, hear me, confusion enters the heart. When the Word is not the focal point of your life, Then your vision is blurred. The Bible says, man shall not live by every— by bread alone. Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. The word is the primary way God speaks. Many believers say, I just want to hear God's voice. But scripture answers that desire. Scripture answers it clearly. Matthew 4:4 says once again, man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. God speaks through his word in alignment with his word, never in contradiction to his word.
