Three days after launch, the U.S. Commerce Department ordered Anthropic to block Fable 5 for non-U.S. citizens under export controls. Since Anthropic doesn't track citizenship, it shut down the model worldwide. Jailbreaks had already bypassed its safety guardrails, but other AI models with similar vulnerabilities stayed online.

3 days. That's how long it took the US government to shut down the most powerful AI model ever released, Fable 5. That's right. Last night on Friday at 5:41 PM, the US Commerce Department has ordered Anthropic to shut down Fable 5 for anyone who is not a US citizen. But the thing is, Anthropic never collected citizenship data when a user signed up, so they have no way of knowing who is and who is not a US citizen. So they decided to shut down Fable 5 for everyone across the board in order to comply. Now, the mechanism used is called an export control directive. It is the same order that the US government uses in order to stop certain countries from getting access to the most advanced chips. Now, you can think of Fable 5 as a bouncer at a club. So the same way that a bouncer would not let underage people into a club, Fable-5 is supposed to reject requests that are dangerous, like cybersecurity attacks or bioweapons. However, what the government found was that there were jailbreaks. So there were ways that people could get Fable-5 to run these dangerous requests, which is why that they ordered this model to be shut down immediately. However, all of the other models have known vulnerabilities and is prone to jailbreak as well, but for some reason, they are all allowed to stay up, but Fable-5 had to be shut down immediately. Shut down. That is something that no one can explain just yet. I will keep you updated on the story and I will let you know if there are any other updates.
