This is the Doing It Online podcast with your host, serial entrepreneur, 6 and 7 figure funnel strategist and super nerd Kate McKibben. Where every week we're here talking nerdy and sharing the things that actually work to help you do what you do online. But better, easier and with a ton more profit too. Are you ready? Let's do it.
Hello guys, it is Kate McKibben here from HelloFunnels Co and I'm here today with the very first ever episode of my podcast Doing It Online. Now I have had start a podcast on my to do list for about nearly four years. So to say that I'm excited to be able to cross that off and say that I have done it as imperfectly as I'm sure it will be, it's still very very exciting. And I wanted to kick off the very first episode with something super value packed, something that I know so many of you probably also have on your to do list. And I want here to help you cross it off and cross it off in the most kick ass way possible. And that is I'm going to step you through a really simple, really powerful email welcome sequence. Now for those of you are going at email welcome what? Email welcome sequence is simply a drip fed out or you know when you go into your email software and you say on day one send this day to send this day three send this. So it's a drip fed out sequence of emails that goes out to your new subscribers. And the purpose of this sequence, sequence or series is to help to introduce you, help to put your best foot forward, help to take those subscribers from being virtual strangers on the Internet to being your newfound digital BFFs. So I'm going to take you through a really simple but really powerful sequence now. I'm going to tell you exactly what to send in each and every email and what I want you to do. A little bit of homework is at the end of this episode, hit pause, go away, get it done and then come back and tell me when you have. Because that's the thing about these little to do's that are hanging around the to do list and have been for a long time. If you don't go out and get them done, they never will. And for another incentive to go and get this off your to do list besides just that feeling of satisfaction from crossing it off is that by having a really killer welcome sequence set up that welcomes your new subscribers, that warms them up, that introduces them, that shows them your best content, that helps them to learn who you are, what you're about and how you can help them. What that means is these subscribers are now going to come onto your email list as super warm. So it's not just like they've, you know, maybe stumbled across something that you pinned or something that you shared on Instagram. They somehow, you know, they found a cool opt in freebie that you had, they opted in for it and then all of a sudden they just get like dumped into your normal email list and they're like, who's this person again? How did I end up here? Why? Why are they sending me emails? When you take people through a step by step email welcome sequence, they're going to actually look forward to getting the emails from you. They're going to know who you are and when it comes round, just for the time for you to actually make offers. And this is whether you're making, you know, doing a live launch or maybe you're thinking about setting up a funnel, those people are going to be so much more, so much warmer, so much more receptive, so much more excited about whatever else it is that you're doing. So it means that the people on your list, they're warmer, they can be higher quality and that's just win wins all around. So enough of me trying to tell you, talk you into why you need a welcome sequence. You all know you do. Let's dive into what goes into that welcome sequence. So for this particular welcome sequence, it is five emails. That's it. And you don't even need to sit down and write five brand new emails. I'm all about working smarter and not harder. So I'm actually at certain points going to tell you when you can actually reuse and repurpose some of your existing content. And the that I always encourage people to do that is because when you are reusing content that you know has worked well in the past, well, it's just kind of a no brainer if you're wanting to lay out the absolute best digital welcome mat you can for these people, you want to be giving them content that you know, people have seen and loved and had a really good reaction to and that's gotten great engagement. So again, it's another win win where you get to work a little less hard and get even better results. So okay, enough blabbering. On. What are these emails? Well, first of all, the very first email that you're going to send, and that one is, should be scheduled to go out immediately is obviously the email that is delivering your opt in. Now you want to keep this one super short, sweet, really clear, you know, a big button maybe if you've got a screenshot of it, something like that. Because you, you really want people, if they have opted in for a freebie, you want them to actually click that link, take that next step and actually consume it. I would say it's something probably like 50% if not more of people who opt in for opt in freebies and opt in bribes, whatever you call them, lead magnets, they don't even open them and that's such a waste because you've created this thing to be a value to, to help them and you want them to actually take that first action. So keep, don't bombard them with information that first email, just keep it short and sweet. Re remind them how powerful it is or how valuable it is. This thing they've opted in for, big clear button and tell them at the bottom that it could even be a little. P.S. hey, I'm also going to be sending you some extra information to help you out with this topic over the next couple of days. So keep your eyes out. So that's really important. You want to frame it and let them know that you're going to be continuing to email them and that those emails are going to be valuable. So that's email number one. Email number two, 24 hours later. This is when you're going to introduce yourself and most importantly, you're going to share the story around how it is that you came to both, you know, love and be passionate about what it is that you do. Because people want to know. You want to tell people not just what it is that you do, but that you are someone who's excited about it, someone who really loves working with people, really loves helping people to get great results. And through that, of course you're going to be talking about the results that you get people, but it's coming from a much more authentic place of you just sharing your genuine passion and excitement for your topic. So this email, you know, this email is probably something that's pretty similar to what you've got on your about page. So if you're wanting a little shortcut, head on over to your about page, go check it out because really this one can be a bit longer. I'd even encourage you to throw in some photos if You've got some candid photos, make sure that you have got lots and lots of personality included as well. If that is your brand. If you're a little bit more cut and dried, do that too. Because the purpose of this email is for people to start to get to know you and find out if you are a person that they're going to want to know more from and therefore they want to stay on your list. Because here's the other thing. People think that the aim of a welcome sequence or the aim of an opt in bribe is to get as many people as possible onto your email list. And actually that's not true. What you want is as many of the right people as possible on your list. So through these emails you're also going to have the chance to discourage the people who aren't right for you. And that's totally okay. So you want to people who are not going to be a good fit, who are never going to buy your products, who are not going to be the kind of clients you want to work with. You kind of want them to bugger off because firstly all they're doing is bringing down your stats. They're not going to be opening and clicking and engaging. So that actually impacts the rest of your deliverability of your emails. They're also, they're sitting there on your email list and you're paying for them month after month. So why would you want to create a community or have these people in your community who are not your people, let them, you know, early on, find out if they are or they aren't and let them go and find their person because everybody will have people that they resonate with and that they don't. And that's totally fine. So don't shy away from injecting some of your extra personality here into these emails because it actually is a good thing if you do have, you know, certain ways of doing things or certain beliefs or things like that that are going to repel the people who aren't right for you, but really solidify for those who are how right for you that they actually are and that they are totally in the right place. So that is email number two goes up 24 hours later and it's all about sharing why you do what you do and why you love it so damn much. Hey guys, it's just Kate here. Okay, email number three. This is your most popular piece of content. And this doesn't have to be a blog post. It could be a Facebook Live that you did and you're going to actually link through directly to the Facebook post. It could be something that you shared on Instagram, it could be a pin if that's, you know, that's kind of something that's suitable for your audience and what it is you're doing. Or it could be a blog post you just want to go and find. What was that one piece of content that got the most engagement, the most shares, the most people going, hell yes, this sounds like me. You're speaking directly to me. Like, where is that piece of content? And you're going to link straight to it. And again, this email, super short and sweet and it could be something as simple as like, hey, I shared this just recently and my audience just loved it. So I thought you might like it too if you're interested in, you know, topic, come and check it out, let me know what you think. Looking forward to hearing from you. Like, you want to keep this short and feeling kind of personal. Just literally like, hey, I thought this would be something you'd be interested in. Here it is. Go check it out and then you just link straight to it. Really, really simple. Now, if you are only getting started and you maybe haven't had a piece of content yet that's really, you know, blown it out of the water engagement wise, that's okay. Just pick the one that you feel is probably your best one so far and then you can always come back and update it later on. Okay, so we are now up to email number four. This goes out another 24 hours later. So all these emails are set to go out a day apart. And what this email is going to do, just starting to get a little bit more strategic now is you're going to address the number one pain point. So this email is all about both giving value but also being able to showcase what it is that you do and the sort of the point of differences and the way that you might do something or the way that you might come about something or some of your beliefs and some results you've got for people as well. So it's a really powerful piece of content. So I want you to sit down and think about, like, what is that number one pain point of your ideal client? What is that thing that they're trying to solve right now, that problem that they just wish would go away? Or if, you know, if it makes more sense, what is that dream that they're chasing, that thing they want to happen next? Everybody's audience will probably have a mixture of people who respond better to either carrot or stick style of marketing or style of messaging. So I will leave it up to you as to which one you think is the most appropriate. So what you're going to do here is you're going to literally come up out front and say, you know, do you suffer from this? Are you trying to achieve this? Are you sick of this? Something like that. That's going to be a subject line and then you're going to talk about how common it is for people to come to have this problem or to have this desire when they first start working with you. And you're going to talk about some of the ways that you address it, some of the, maybe the things that you do that are slightly differently and through this email. And this one's probably a chunkier one, but I would imagine if you've ever done a launch of any kind, you've probably written an email just like this before. So go and find that, you know, go and find one of your best ones and you can just reuse it. But through this talking about, you know, the pain point and the way that you really prefer to solve that pain point, you're going to sprinkle in some client results and some client stories because that's probably even more powerful than you just giving advice, is you showing how other people have used your methods, have worked with you, have used your advice and the results that they've actually gotten. So that is going to be your email number four. Think about the number one pain point and you know, and address it. Solve it. Show them your special, you know, don't be afraid to share a bit of your own secret sauce in here as well. You know, share some of the really good, juicy stuff because that's going to make people kind of, you know, is prick up and pay attention. Be like, this person knows what they're talking about and how cool is that they've been able to do this and I might be interested in working with them. That is the kind of, you know, feeling that you want people to have when they come away from this email.
Now we are up to email number five. This is a lucky last email before you then add these people into your normal email list or into your longer, greater funnel if you have one. So this one very similar to email number four. What I want you to do is actually think about the number one question that you get asked before people invest with you. So think about, you know, what is it that people are trying to solve or this isn't the same as a pain point. This is more of a practical kind of piece of advice where you're going to answer, you know, you're going to answer one of those questions that people like, oh, I just wish I knew how to do this. So I'm looking for an easier way to do that. Again, it's purely coming from a place of value. And if you want to be that extra bit, you know, be that extra bit strategic and think about the questions that people are looking for answers for before they sort of invest in a program or offer that, the kind of thing that you have, that is going to be some bonus points. But if that's kind of a little bit too, you know, high strategy for you, if you're like, I don't really know what kind of questions they asked right before, that's totally okay too. That is normally Something that comes with, you know, running an offer over and over again over a long period of time. So, so if you're sort of bit more newer to the game, just think about what is that number one question that people ask you for? Ask you about. Sorry. And again, if you are brand spanking you and people aren't asking you any questions yet from a business side of things, think about what is the question that like your family and friends like when you know, people go, oh, ask Kate, she'll be able to help you out. What is that question? As long as it's something that's related, you know, to your business. So that's your five emails guys. Super simple. Number one, deliver the opt in. Number two, 24 hours later, introduce yourself and why it is you love what you do. Number three, think about your most popular piece of content and send them that way. Number four is to answer one of their pain points and share some customer stories. And number five is to show your expertise by answering that number one question that you get asked. Now I have an extra bonus that you can feel free to add in if you like. And that's because surprise and delight is one of the values of my company and something I always love to do is to add in a little something extra, a little extra bonus, kind of like this extra tip. So what you can do and you can actually, you can either do it at the end or you can do it, you know, in between maybe emails, three, four or five is to actually add in an extra little gift. So if you have another opt in freebie that is related or maybe you have like a template lying around or some scripts or something that you think are really, really awesome, feel free to add in an email which is just sending them a gift because that is, you know, giving them that little extra something that they probably weren't expecting with you know, literally no strings attached to just be like hey, I've got a gift for you. I saw you opted in for this. Usually people who are looking at this also probably a bit help xyz. I've got this awesome thing and I just wanted you to have it. I think you'll find it really useful and you know, with something like this, maybe ask them if they do love it to let you know to you know, to tag you on social or DM you, or whatever to let you know. So there's still some kind of call to action but you could otherwise you could just leave it. This is just about increasing that know like trust factor and about giving them a little like feel good moment that's associated with you and your brand. And that is going to be something that is going to. Well, it's going to pay off to sound like as an equal marketer, um, you know, in the long run, these kind of strategies pay off really well. But it take off the marketing hat and just being a human, it's awesome to make people feel good. And these people are coming into your community, they're getting on your list. Why not give them that little extra something? So that is it guys. That is my super simple, super powerful kick ass email welcome sequence. If you do decide to try it, and I really hope you do, make sure you tag me, let me know. And if you love this episode, make sure you leave us a review. Tell your friends. I gotta come up with got the better ending for this because you can kind of tell it's my first one. But either way, I did it guys. My first episode of the podcast is out. It's done.
