Kate McKibbin explains why selling feels gross and how to fix it: make sure your offer actually delivers value, price it fairly for the work involved, and sell in ways that feel true to you. Collecting client testimonials helps too.
It didn't feel good. It didn't feel like I was bringing anything to the table, like, other than, you know, eyeballs.

Do it.
Hey. Hey, guys. Welcome to episode 39 of the Doing It Online podcast. I hope you are all having a amazing week and I'm here to hopefully make it even a little bit better. So today we are. Oh, actually, I didn't introduce myself. It's Kate McKibben here, of course, your host from hellofunnels Co. And today I am going to dive in to one of the topics that I know comes up again and again and again. And I'm hoping that I'm going to be able to help you get a little bit of a new perspective, a little bit of peace around something that might be getting in the way of your business growth and you making some epic sales. And that is, I really want to talk about some of the things that have helped me to stop feeling icky and gross about selling. So a little bit of background, guys, is, you know, as a told this story a few times, thousands of times probably, you know, my very first business was a publishing style of business. So it was an online women's lifestyle fashion blog. It was one of the biggest ones at the time here in Australia. And what happened with that particular sort of business model is I ended up spending most of my time on the phone cold calling brands and companies about, you know, booking advertising with us because that is how we made money. And I tell you, I freaking hated it. I hated it to my core. It was the reason that I think in the end I did burn down my business because I was like, I don't enjoy making money this way. I don't want to have to be selling. Like, I had this real story about how selling was gross and I hated having to do it. And it just, it made. Even when we got, you know, when we made big sales and had big campaigns come in, I was like, oh, you know, I resented it. I hated it. And that's just really not a good energy to be putting towards anything in your business, particularly something as important as the way that your business makes revenue. Because if it doesn't make revenue, it ain't a business. So over Time, a lot of self work, a lot of reading books and being in masterminds and having coaches coach me through things. I've found three sort of helpful. I don't know if they're perspectives or mindset shifts or whatever you want to call them, but three things that I've found really, really useful to help me get from that point of thinking. Sales is gross. I hate sales. Of waking up in the morning dreading having to do anything. Sales related to now being at the point where it's. I wouldn't call it a joy, that might be a push, but it's enjoyable. I really enjoy it and I. It makes it so much easier in your business when you do. And so I'm going to hopefully help you guys get even closer to, or a little bit closer to that point as well. So the first sort of thing that was like really kind of clicked for me and made a really big difference for me is, is changing the way I thought about sales from almost like a way of trying to take something from people. Like I felt like particularly when I was selling ad space because you know, really my internal values like helping giant companies sell more lipsticks just really didn't feel like, just didn't really align. I didn't feel like I was helping people, but it did feel like I was going around like cap in hand going like, please give me money. Like it just, it didn't feel good. It didn't feel like I was bringing anything to the table like other than, you know, eyeballs. And I didn't personally see the valuable value in that either, although, you know, the brands did. But what has been super useful to me is over time actually taking that step back and realizing sales isn't about going out, putting your hand out and asking people to give you something or trying to take something from somebody. It's actually about an exchange and it has to be an equal and fair exchange, both parties. And when it is, then it feels great. And I wanted to reiterate the point that it has to be feel equal and fair to both. So where this can show up in businesses is two ways. And you know, from the business owner side of things is sometimes if you feel out of alignment with your pricing, for example, if you're sort of, you're just getting started and you're like, oh, I, you know, I've been told I've got to print it, I've got to price it at this to be able to be profitable. So I'm going to go out there and I'm going To put a big scary price on it and just cross my fingers and toes. And hopefully it's fine if you don't, deep down your core, believe and know that your offer is worth that price. And in point number two, we'll kind of talk about how you do that. Because I'm not saying anyone needs to go out there and slash their prices right now, but I'm saying it needs to be in alignment, guys. But if you feel like you are ripping people off in any way, that ickiness is going to come through and it's going to be apparent, it's going to make you feel like shit. And the people are going to tell, they, you know, they are going to know that you don't believe in your product and therefore why should they give you money anyway? And when people. Nothing makes you hate sales more than when you go out there and actually make yourself do this thing you don't enjoy and you still don't make sales, if that makes sense. So it has to feel fair. So. And it goes in the other way as well if you kind of get to the point where you know what you're offering, you've actually been over generous and you've undercharged and you resent having to then deliver it or you've set up your offers in a way that involves a lot of your time once you sell it, just because maybe at the start you're at the point where like, I just had to sell anything, so I'm going to make this the most valuable thing ever in the world. And now you sold a few of them. You're like, oh my gosh, this is the worst. You know, again, it's going to feel out of alignment. It's going to feel heavy and yucky and gross. So I would say step number one to making sales feel good is when your offer and the value that you give in your offer is, you know, equal, equivalent to the value that people are giving you back. And the way they give value is through money. The way you give value is through your expertise. The way you deliver, the way you show up and your time, it's all bundled up together. The second thing, like I said, these are related, is that you need to make sure that your offer is actually good, that it actually gets people the results that you are promising that it does. And if your offer is new and you are testing it out, then let people know that it is new, tell them it's beta, give them a killer rate, because again, that's going to make it feel more aligned with you because you're kind of feeling like, oh, I'm not sure how this is going to go. So you're going to give them a freaking good deal and then they're going to be happy to jump in easy. It's going to make it easier to sell because this is a limited time, really amazing deal to get onto something that come on, you know will be great, but you just kind of need to see it play out first. Right? So, but spend the time focusing on your offer and this is one of the reasons as well, like slight sidetrack here that I really encourage people to not have too many offers at the start because it's really hard to make your offers amazing if you're constantly creating new offer and then new offer and then new offer. Like even it's really hard to make the marketing of it amazing, the way you sell it amazing. But it's definitely really difficult to give that actual offer, the creation of the content, the time and the love and the energy that it deserves to be great. And you know, we're not shooting for mediocre here guys. If you've decided to do the big scary thing and create your own business, you're not doing it to kind of eh, get by. You're doing it because you want to do. And you may not admit this to yourself yet because you want to do something big and something exciting and you want more for your life. So don't, don't cut your say that your nose off despite your face, but makes me sound like I'm 85. But you know, don't sort of be so fast to get where you're wanting to go that you, you don't take the time to make what you're selling great. Like, let's all remember that we're not saying be a perfectionist, but I am saying that and we actually just did a big overhaul of our offer ecourse empire. You know, we knew the content was great, but some of the videos were really bad. You know, like I'd film them straight into my laptop with a baby napping in the other room and baby spew on my shoulder. Like, you know, we did it very imperfectly but that's why we offered at a great rate to the start. And you know, like I said, I, I get sidetracked easily. So apologies. But you know, this point number two is when you know your offer is great, like when you actually step back and again, keeping in mind that sales is an exchange and you want that exchange to be fair when you've spent the Time to set, you know, to set up an offer. When you always kind of have that mindset of always being a learner, always wanting to sort of improve your skills and up level your skills and make something as amazing as it possibly can be, when you know that your offer is great, then you are going to be excited about sharing it with people because you know, it helps people. So then again, it's not about going, hey, can you give me your money? And just please don't ever log into this because it's terrible. It's more about oh my gosh, I can help you. How exciting. And that is such a different energy to bring to anything. Now the third thing that has really, really helped me is that, and particularly as someone who loves funnels and automation and who like has gone and deep dived and funnel actors, all of them from full levels of pro marketing all the way through to intuitive feminine funnels, I've been in, I've played with all of them. But I think it is so, so important that you never ever try and be anybody else or sell like anybody else and you never do anything that feels off to you. So inside my ecosystem by community, I get asked a lot like should I do it this way or that way? And for a lot of those questions it's like, what feels right to you? What feels good to you? How if you were the consumer going through this, how would you like it? How would you, what would you feel appreciate the most? Because if you're setting up, you know, your sales that way, and yes, I'm talking about automated sales as well. Like yes, you can, you know, give someone a 72 hour offer. I mean hell, you, you go through McDonald's and they, they up, they upsell you. It's like, would you like fries for an extra dollar? That's a limited time only offer people in its purest form. We just often are recreating that in an online sense. But just do it, don't do it in a way that feels gross. If you're doing, ever doing any kind of offer promotion, you know, whatever it is that you're using as your main sales tool, if it feels gross, it's going to come across and it's not going to work. Now I'm not saying don't do things that feel scary. There is a difference. So for example, I was always scared of webinars for years and I refused to do them and I continue to find them quite stressful because I'm an introvert and to me it feels like getting up on A stage in front of hundreds of people. But I love the platform. I love how you know, it enables me to share great information, give great value and you know, create an amazing invitation for the right people. But that was I never thought that they were gross. I thought some of the ways people do them could be a bit off and I choose not to do them that way. So it's about finding what feels good to you, seeing people who sell in a way that you enjoy and going okay, well how can I do a similar thing in my business? So those are my three things guys is one, remember it's an exchange. Two make sure it's a fair exchange so make sure your off your offer is actually awesome. And also that you're not over giving so you don't resent your clients. And three is never do anything that feels off for you. And one little bonus tip. And again this kind of helps with point. Well with all of them really is I love saving a little folder. We've actually got a Slack channel now where my group so my team adds stuff up until they find it as well. But basically anytime we get some great feedback from clients from people in our community, we post it in there and just have when you have those days when you're not sure if your offer is that good or you're doubting yourself and that imposter syndrome's coming in, it's tapping you on the shoulder, just go into that Slack channel or that Google Drive folder or wherever it is you saved it and reading through those stories and those testimonials like having that feel good bank to remind you that yes you are good and you are helping people and it is needed. What you are offering is always going to make it feel so much better. So now guys, one more thing.
