#54 - 3 ”woo-ish” money habits I swear by ( + 3 not-so-woo ones)
7 Dec 2025 · 0 min
Kate McKibbin shares six money habits for entrepreneurs: three mindset-based ones like daily gratitude checks and celebrating sales, plus three practical ones like keeping a three-month expense buffer, setting up a rewards fund, and paying yourself a regular salary.
I'm woo curious. I'm not full woo, but I feel like the days when I do remember to do this and do it properly, you know, are days we end up having better sales.
This is the Doing It Online podcast with your Host, serial entrepreneur, 6 and 7 figure funnel strategist and super nerd Kate McKibben, where every week we're here talking nerdy and sharing the things that actually work to help you do what you do online. But better, easier and with a ton more profit too. Are you ready? Let's do it it.
Hello. Hello everybody. It is Kate here from HelloFunnels Co and welcome to episode number 54 of the Doing It Online podcast. Now today I'm going to do something completely different and I'm not going to talk about funnels. You know, it's good to mix things up a little bit. And today instead, what I want to talk about was some money habits that I have picked up along the way in my business and you know, things I do sort of more sort of personally as well since I've been running my business since, what was it, 2007. And these are just little, quick little things that usually I sort of started doing after something came and sort of, you know, bit me in the butt a little bit. But I found just adding these little habits in some daily, some weekly, and I'll kind of break them all down for you have really helped to, you know, they've helped with my money mindset, they've helped me to feel a lot more empowered around my numbers and have a much better sort of view on those and what they mean. And they're all just simple little things that you can add in to your business, to your daily routines and rituals. Like some of them take literally minutes, seconds and it really all adds up. And I think now, you know, some of these, you know, these habits or as my partner likes to call them, superstitions, like if I, if I don't do them, I feel, you know, almost like I've, you know, I'm letting the side down, like something's going to go wrong. As I said, as you'll see in the title, I said there's three sort of woo ish money habits and three, absolutely not at all woo. And I know everybody listening to this is going to be somewhere on your, you know, on that spectrum of, you know, woo or, or not woo. I'm sort of somewhere in the middle. I call myself woo curious or woo adjacent because there's definitely little bit, you know, like I love me a Crystal I've got. I had my office feng shui when I moved into it. But I sort of generally come at these things from more of a sense of like I feel like I've been around long enough and I've seen enough to, to feel like there is something more there. I'm not going to hang my hat on exactly what that is. But I'm also a big believer of just throwing everything at something and what's the harm? So I'm going to share, as I said, my woo ish money habits and my not so woo ones and feel free to pick and choose the ones which sit best with you and your own sort of where you sit on that woo spectrum. But I'm going to start with the wooish ones because I think they, they're probably the more fun. So first off, and this one I actually got from a friend of mine, Denise Duffield Thomas. She has a business called Lucky Bitch. She has a couple of great books. She's got more than a couple now, I think. Amazing online program around money mindset. And if, if this is something you're interested in, go check her out. But one of the things that she teaches and I've now done, I think pretty much daily for the last four years is daily money tracking. And that is to actually sit down every day with a spreadsheet. My spreadsheet's gotten more and more elaborate over the years. Cause I also pop in like funnel st and stuff like that as well. But just to sit down, take a quick minute and to track in the revenue and the sales that have come into your business in the last 24 hours. Now for me, even though this is a technically a woo habit because it's sort of going along with that whole saying that you know, where attention goes, you know, that's what grows. Or actually that's not. I've just butchered that saying completely. But you know what I mean. But you know, what you focus on is what you sort of get more of. And that's sort of what the, I suppose the, the purpose or that kind of rationale behind this habit. But for me it's become something a lot more and it's more become like this dashboard and this super quick kind of metric. Particularly as someone with funnels who you know is doing things pretty much daily because you know that's what funnels are about is having those daily, every couple of day kind of sales coming through. But it's been a really great just sort of check in for me what is happening in my business and again, when things are automated and they're sort of happening in the background, it can be sort of tempting to just go, I don't need to think about that anymore. And then it's not until something goes drastically wrong that you kind of then in a panic coming back, trying to fix it. So I really have just enjoyed both from the woo side of it and the not woo side of it, of just having that sort of daily check in on just the health of my business and my sales and how that's all going. And like I said, it's done started out just super simple. Just every day I'd put in, in one column our stripe sales and one column our PayPal sales, and then another column, it had the total. And then we'd have like, at the top, it was like adding up the totals for the year. So we could then be tracking out, you know, how we were progressing for our goals as well. But it's now that, that spreadsheet's now gotten crazy complicated and it's got, you know, for our slo funnel, like Facebook ad spend, like all this other stuff and, and my team contributes to it as well. But it's still something that I really like to do. I've considered outsourcing it, but again, it's just more for me. I like this habit. I like the sitting down. And sometimes I, you know, I don't get to do every day. Sometimes, you know, I don't do it over weekends. So Monday I do a couple of days at once, but it's still doing it regularly enough. It's just been absolutely invaluable. The second one, and this is full on woo. Like, you don't get much more woo than this. And this one I actually got from the lovely Jenna Black, who again, is an amazing money mindset coach. So go check her out. We'll link to these all in the, in the show notes so you can go and follow everyone. But she has a great little habit she recommends to her clients, which is what she calls like a daily money ritual or daily money blessing. And that is literally to sit down each day and look at your bank account on your, you know, on your computer, on your phone or whatever sort of convenient. And just like feel the energy of it and then just start pouring, like, gratitude towards it. Like, just start being super grateful, super thankful, saying, you know, thank you to everyone who's contributed it, sending that person, you know, good wishes and abundance, and just feel the, how the energy in yourself shifts. It's quite impactful, actually. When I Heard it. I was like, oh, that's kind of a silly thing to do. And then I tried it and it's just. It takes maybe two minutes if that. And then just sitting there in that energy is such a good way to start the day. And I have definitely. And again I said I'm woo curious. I'm not full woo. But I feel like the days when I do remember to do this and do it properly, you know, are days we end up having better sales and that, you know, when we've done it, I've done it consistently. There's been that flow on effect. So I would really recommend this one as something to do daily. But even if it's not daily, but even if it's on those days when you're just in a funky and you know, it feels like everything's a bit hard and things aren't going your way, it could be a thing just to help to shift that energy even just for you internally so you can sort of get out of that feeling of stuckness and start moving forward. The third one that we do again, this is Woo. And it's just about feeling good. And our team, my team does it as well, is that we celebrate every sale. And you know, now that we have a mini but mighty funnel, you know, this can be like 20 or so sales a day. But we still, sometimes more, we still celebrate every single one. So we, you know, I always add a little bit of nerd onto my Woo. So. And again, we'll link to this below. Cause I have a little tutorial on how you can do this for yourself. But I have it set up that every time a sale comes through, it comes through to my phone and it makes like a cash register sound, like a, you know, Cha Ching. And in that little notification we've got like these happy, you know, party emojis and it just says, you know, woohoo. You know the person's name. You know, this amazing person has joined our program. We send them so much good abundance and goodwill and we can't wait to help change their lives and help them make millions of dollars. I can't remember exactly what it says, but you know, you can craft that to something that is, you know, relevant to you. And so every time I see these notifications go through, I'm like, yes, this is awesome. And I read that and it just reconfirms. Like I said, it's a great energy thing. It's great for the team to be all celebrating together. Even small sales, like we celebrate them just as hard as big ones. But I also think I like this as a practice as reminding you that particularly as you grow, that every single sale behind that sale is a human. A human who's coming to you and who it is kind of like your, you know, you now have a duty of care, I guess, to help them as much as possible. You know, you're going to be impacting their lives in some way and that's no small thing. So I love this little habit and this is something I've done for years and. And again, it just feels, you know, it's something that helps you to feel really good even on those days when things are feeling a little bit funky. And we absolutely all have those. So those are my Wooish habits. If you do any of those or if you're thinking of picking them up, make sure you let us know. Tag us over on Instagram. We love to hear what your own little woo habits are now. My not so woo habits. So now we get, you know, jump over to the more serious, nerdier side of me. These are a few again, money habits. Things that have just helped me to feel a bit more in control of my. Like, I always feel like. And I'm still. This is one of the areas of business that I am constantly and just furiously learning and where I know that, you know, there's a lot that I don't know and I need to really upskill in and where I, you know, I'm investing a lot of time and revenue into working with consultants and people who do, you know, who have had more experience in this kind of stuff than me. But like I said, these are just a couple of little things that have been really useful for me as my business has grown over the years. So first one is, and now this is one that I would strongly recommend you talk to your accountant or financial advisor around like creating a version of for yourself. But this is one that my own coach and I have sort of decided on is to have in your business bank account. And first of all, it starts as a goal to get there and then it's kind of like the maintenance but to always have at least three months of expenses for your business in your bank account. And then every three months like. Cause that's when our, you know, when we're doing sort of our quarterly taxes here in Australia, we have a look at that. And anything above that, you can pay yourself out as dividends or as bonuses or as you can use to for profit share with your teams and. Or you can donate to charity or whatever it Is. But that having that sort of like that, that habit of that check in every quarter of. Okay, yes. Have we got enough in our little, you know, buffer bank account and then anything over that, like, what's the, you know, that's kind of like the fun stuff. That's the stuff you either get to take home, you need to get to, you know, help to sprinkle on your. Your staff, you get to invest, you get to donate. And how you're going to split that up and do that obviously is up to everyone. Everyone's different. But for me, I was always like, well, what, you know, okay, yes, we're, you know, as a business has grown, we've been making more money, but what do we do with it? You know, like, I feel like there's. This is the bit that I'm, you know, learning now I'm working with people to get better at because it was just kind of a bit of a mystery. Like, most things that I learned so far was just like, how to make it. And then once you get it, you're like, okay, what now? Like, what is the best way to do this? That's just been a really simple way of looking at it for me. And that, yeah, has just made it really, like, really simple, really easy and really fun as well. Another thing, and this is something I've done always, all the way back to my very first business, is that whenever we have a launch or something like that. And so my first business, it was, you know, our main revenue was ad sales. So every month I would do this. I would set us a goal for the month and then if I, you know, hit that goal, then I would have, you know, I would set a reward. And so it used to be a percentage of the revenue, basically, or it would be, if we hit the goal, it's say it's $200 or whatever it is. And then if we go over the goal, it's X percent, whatever we go over the goal goes into this, like, rewards fund. And, you know, sometimes I would say what that reward would go to. Other times it would just be cash. But it was always, this must be spent on something that is fun, something that's going to make me feel good. Not like groceries or anything like that. Like, it needed to be a treat. And that's always worked really well for me. And now that our business is more like, obviously we've got funnels happening and then we've got launches every few months. So now we do the same thing with our launches. And now we have, you know, Sort of our good, better, best goals for our launches. And the really fun part for me it's actually not so much reward for myself this time, it's about rewarding the team. So as we hit these goals, you know, I'm able to give different levels of bonuses to my team and that becomes, you know, that's just a night I always think is a lovely thing to be able to do. That makes me feel like everyone puts in so much effort and work towards these things. It's lovely to be able to give back and show appreciation and I know that my team really appreciate it as well. Again, just a simple, like a super simple little habit setting those goals, figuring out what I always found it useful to in advance, say what that was going to like, what that reward and amount looked like for each stage rather than trying to come up with it at the other end. And you know, then knowing that that's there and that's sitting there. I've always found it at least very, very motivating. Now the last non woo habit, and this is one I recommend everybody does as soon as you're able to, is to actually set and pay yourself a salary and make sure that, you know, whatever pay cycle you're going to put yourself on, whether it's, you know, weekly, which is what I found was easiest to do at the start because it's sort of a bit cash more cash flow friendly. I guess if your revenue is a bit more up and down would be a weekly salary. And just make sure that you are putting aside your tax. Your we have superannuation. I know that's called, I think it's 541k or something like that in the US but you know, things like that, your retirement fund or whatever it is, making sure that all those obligations are put aside every time you pay yourself is just such a good habit to get into because you do not want to get to the end of a year and be like oh wow, I made it and I paid myself and that was great. And then you get a tax bill and then you're in debt the next year and you start behind the next year and you then you have to catch up and it becomes this really awful cycle and it's also going jumping back into the woo side of things for a while. It's also something I see a lot of people almost fear and therefore avoid is when they're scared of that tax bill, when they don't feel like they're in control of that because they've been bitten before and they feel like they're going to get this wrong. Like they're, you know, they're just waiting for that shoe to drop. Then they almost become avoidant around earning more money. Because I think if I earn more money, my tax is going to be bigger. I'm going to stuff it up even more. I'm going to have even more debt. Which is kind of crazy train of thought when you think about it. But it can be what happens. That's been really valuable for me. There's some great like apps and things like that now that actually make this really easy. Like we have a software tool, sorry, a payroll software that I use that just does it automatically. Like I don't have to sit there and put it into different bank accounts each week. It's just each week I go, yep, process payroll. And when it does that, it grabs out the tax, it grabs out superannuation, you know, and it, and it does all of our sort of obligations that way. So if I would definitely recommend you look into something like that for your part of the world, I'm sure there will be one. There's some amazing things out there just make your life so much easier. And you know, even if you just take one or two of these money habits and start adding them into your business, I know they're going to help you to feel more in control, more empowered and, you know, more like a boss, which you are. And that's only going to bring more good things. So I hope you guys have found this episode super valuable.
