A recruiter explains how to ask hiring managers if they can actually hire now. The question cuts through noise: ask "Do you need this person now?" to find out which roles are real priorities versus time-wasters, then focus your energy on the urgent ones.

Such a simple question to actually ask people in that is, are you ready to make this hire now? The amount of times that you ask someone that, you go through a whole job briefing. We had it last week, didn't we? And he's like, oh, I'm not really in a hurry if the right person comes along. So, and I said, okay, so if I do this search tomorrow and if I send you people on Tuesday, are you going to interview next week and can you hire them? Oh, I'm— and then as soon as somebody starts going like that, I'm like, okay, see you later, bye. Because you can tell in the way that they're talking about those jobs which ones are priority, which ones don't have a lot of candidates in play, and which ones they actually need. Ask the questions that are going to make them feel a bit uncomfortable almost, and say like, do you need this person? Can they start soon? You know, and, and see how they react. You will know when someone needs to hire. They'll be like, I need this person yesterday. Yeah, exactly. And you can tell.
