A recruitment coach argues that easy early wins set you up for failure later. His example: team member Orla needs to face setbacks now so she won't become a filler when real challenges hit. His method: allow a quick emotional release, then move on and build resilience.

If you come into a recruitment job and it's real easy and happy days from the get-go, you're gonna screw yourself over in a year or two when things turn. Like, you have to go through the shit— excuse my French— but you do. And like, the girl that's on my team at the moment, I'm coaching her through that now. She's had loads of things that have knocked her back, and I'm like, Orla, I would rather you have this now, right now, than come in, fly it, and 6 months down the line you think, I'm just this amazing filler, and then all of a sudden things change, and then you go and you do a donut. And then you're in the, like, in the horrors. I'd rather you go through this now and build a resilience so that when all these things happen in the future, they become so minuscule that it's just like, right, cool, you get your tiny violin out, you have your 5-second cry, and then you go again.
