Before asking for a referral, check three things: does the person trust you, believe in your company, and see value in what you offer. Ask too early or to someone newly fired and you damage the relationship before it starts.

Obviously everybody wants to try and generate referrals, generate inbound traffic, generate introductions into different clients. And one thing we always say when we're asking for somebody for a referral or a candidate flip, I always ask myself, do they buy into me as a person? Do they buy into me as a company and what I'm doing as an organization? And do they buy into me as an actual service and what I'm going to offer? If all three of those, you can confidently say yes, they buy into those two things, that's when you've got your one shot of saying, hi mate, can you introduce me into XYZ like we organized at the start? I see too many people rushing in, maybe even on registration call with some poor geezer that's a VP of Sales looking for a job, trying to feed his kids at home, saying, oh, I know you just left that job being made redundant. Do you think you can like introduce me in to try and get a few roles on the SDR side or something? You've ruined your chance with that person. You've almost made the relationship worse than it was before you even knew the person.
