Three startup founders had wildly different goals: one wanted a £100 million business, another just wanted a modest cash-out. Their misalignment made collaboration impossible. Founders need to talk early and honestly about vision and exit plans, or be willing to part ways.

I spoke to 3 founders. I spoke to them about, okay, cool, what's the vision? What's the exit piece? One says the vision is £100 million. We're going to build it to £100 million business, etc. And the other guy says, oh no, I'm actually quite happy just to jump out with a few million in my pocket. I recently caught up with them because I couldn't engage with them because the vision was so different. It would have been really hard. I said, yeah, we realised on that call we're not aligned at all. And it was like we came off the call and we need to have a proper conversation. Unfortunately for them, that meant that they had to go do their own thing. So it's really important to take a step back. I would say you need a mature conversation. Get on the same page, be big boys and girls about it. If you can't get on the same page, then you've got some tough decisions to make.
