Praise with Guest: Andrew Maldonado | Ron + Hope: Unfiltered

Ron and Andrew Maldonado discuss leading worship services that create space for spiritual breakthroughs. They cover the technical and relational work behind hosting God's presence, why comfort-first services miss the point, and Ron's upcoming series Heavenly Chaos on restoring high-expectation worship.

Hey, guys, I can't cut up at the beginning today because Hope's not here to carry it for me. She's usually opening up and I'm usually doing something kind of foolish or stupid. So, anyway, this is Ron and Hope Unfiltered, real raw and relevant. And I think you see right quickly, this is not Hope. So anyway, I've got a special guest. This is Andrew Maldonado, who is. He leads our basically creative arts department on the west coast. Praise and worship leader as well. And you say, well, you know, praise and worship and arts, that's not my thing. I'll go ahead and switch to another podcast. Stay right where you are because this is going to really not be just a praise and worship talk. I want to talk about setting atmospheres, how atmospheres affect you, and then I want to talk about basically atmospheres that create signs and wonders and miracles. So if you're not a candidate for the miraculous, then you can move ahead. But if you say, I need all of that I can get in my life, I want you to hang around because there is an environment that creates the expectation for those things to happen from God. And I want to talk about that. Not just setting the right atmosphere in a church service. That's not hard to do because everybody's come to church to do church stuff. But in your own life, in your personal life, I want to talk a little bit about that. So I brought him in and we're just going to hit some things naturally and spiritually. But, Andrew, it's good to have you tell everybody a little bit about what your life is like at Redemption. What does a week look like? What do you do and kind of how you got here? A little bit about your testimony. Do the two minute quick version.
Two minute quick version. Okay. So like he said, I am one of the praise and worship leaders here on the west coast, and the week is crazy, but it's great. Week's really beginning.
I don't think people have any idea how much goes into it.
We were talking about it just yesterday. Oh, you work at a church. Oh, you only work on Sunday.
Couple hours on Sunday. You got it made. And I'm like, man, no, that is.
That is.
I don't think I've been home before 9 o' clock at night this week.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
Yeah. And so, you know, during the week is a lot of meeting, a lot of planning, you know, of everything in and around our Sunday service.
Now, you just read, you just ran right there. A lot of planning. There's a lot of People that think we just get up and do this, right? No, it's intentional. They're intentional. They are. Literally. You got to watch what keys you're in. Going from one song to another. You got to make sure that one song is in one person's vocal sweet spot versus another, and all of these things are going into it. Then you've got Ableton, then you've got click tracks, then you've got to fire all the rest of the stuff at the same time in conjunction with the instruments. It is a huge, huge thing doing church that can affect a worldwide audience like we do. So I had to jump in there.
No, absolutely. And like you're saying, going into. Even setting an atmosphere, all of those things are done to set an atmosphere visually, audibly, and so on and so forth. So during the week we're planning, we're rehearsing Thursday nights, and then obviously Sunday morning, we're here very early, until the early afternoons doing service. And I got here just about three and a half years ago. It's been. It's crazy how much time has flown by, but came on here as a guitarist, played for just guitar for a year and a half, and then led a couple of times here and there, depending on what the song was and what they needed in the service. And then when our former worship leader transitioned out, you know, then we had had that conversation.
Came you and had this conversation.
We had this conversation, and really since then, it was, are you willing. You asked me, am I willing to take responsibility? Am I willing to own? Am I willing to make it a priority and a centerpiece? And. And the answer was yes. And so here we are.
Let me ask you this. I'm going to interview you just a little bit here for those of you who may not know. You know, there are people who do, and then there are people that manage those who do. And there's all type of different places on organizational flowcharts. Usually people that are creatives are horribly horrible at administration. It's not good or bad. It's just the nature of the personality and the skill set. And people who are tremendous admins are not usually the most creative people in the world. I'm not an extremely creative guy. I have a good idea every once in a while, but I don't get up every day with ideas running out of me. And so I noticed one time that I literally had to take creatives out of an administration building and give them their own space because they just straight up function differently. They just function differently. And whereas admin, you get paid for the job you do and the hours you put in. I kind of had to go to the creatives and say, all right, you don't get paid on hours, you get paid on. I'm going to judge you on the product. Yes. When I get there Sunday, it better be right. However you get there, if you can do it in 15 hours or if it takes you 130, whatever you got to do to get this bar right here, then I'll let you do it your way. You have to do a little bit of both. How do you balance being a creative? Songwriting, writing camps, ideas, production, along with you're buying the plane tickets, you're setting up the rental cars. Those are two different skill sets that you have to do both of them. Right.
And I think, like you said, though, it's. It is a balance. And I think that, you know, it is one of those things that does require intentionality. I was blessed to be around two different groups of people coming up my whole life. Even as a little kid, you know, I had family members who were extremely creative, free spirited. You know, my mom was born in 1960. She grew up in that hippie era, you know, and. And so she was one who was always singing and whatnot. But then her brother, my uncle, who was such a significant influence in my life, was military, law enforcement. He was working out at the same time every afternoon, up at the same time every day, and instilled those values of discipline and organization and having a plan. Whereas, like, my mom was a little bit more just listen to your heart and, you know, and so when you grow up around both. Both elements, you learn to appreciate different aspects of both and bring both of those into your life.
You know, I married a creative. And since we have been around each other, working together, because we've been co pastors, that was very controversial. 1991, when I came out of the gate saying, she is pastor too. You gotta understand, at that time, that was almost taboo. Wasn't controversial. It was almost taboo. We've done everything together. As we have grown, I've seen her come more my way. She's a lot more leader, instincts, administrative. And I've come some her way where every once in a while I just take an hour and say, you know what? This next hour I'm going to brainstorm and I'm going to think. Whereas there was a time where that was never a part of my life, I went and I do. And now I'm like, sometimes I need to think before I do. So I didn't get on here to talk about organizational flowcharts and all that, but I think that it helps people sometime to know, wow, they just didn't get up and pick up their guitar and start singing songs. There's a lot that goes into it for us to be able to put it through that camera.
Yes, sir.
And I don't know if you know this or not, but, you know, people don't like it when preachers ask for money. But if people had any idea what it takes. The engineers.
Yes, sir.
The technicians. And then if we took what we did on Sunday in the building and just let them hear that feed, it would be the worst sounding thing they've ever heard. So there's a whole different mixer board that's about $100,000, and a whole different engineer that is sitting there, and he is taking care of the TV and Internet feed while you got the guy in the building taking care of the building feed. Then there's a guy behind this stage back there in a little hole taking care of the people on the stage in their inner ear feed. And those are three different mixer boards. But, you know, people kind of want church stuff to be free. And I'm like, well, it wasn't free to me.
No, it takes a whole lot more.
Than it was free, you know, but at the same time, while they want it free, they want it done at a very high level. And I'm like, you know what? Your expectations are a little high. I need you to turn back around and say, I'm going to bless the thing that blesses me.
Yes, sir.
I'm going to strengthen the thing that strengthens me. So I had to put that shameless plug in there.
Hey, it's all right.
Because it takes a lot to do what we do, and the way we do it. Let me get into the second thing, because we got an ad here that I want to give time to in a minute. God has been speaking to me about 20, 24, and you need to hear this. Anybody connected to us. And if you're listening, you're connected. The year of the Open Heaven. When I say open heaven, there's something you have to do in the earth that creates that. I'm concerned about our new generation that has come of age in many ways, but one of the things is they pay very little attention to biblical protocols. Like, they just go straight and start worshiping. You've trampled on about 50 protocols.
Yes, sir.
I will enter his gates with thanksgiving and I will enter his courts. You've gone past the gates into the courts. I will enter his courts with praise. And then there is that most holy experience where it is worship and that's behind the veil experiences. But nobody just walks in up in the face of God and says, hey, how you doing man? I mean, there are protocols and the music can be good and the worship can even be authentic. But nothing happened in the room because protocols have to be followed. And we've done a great job at hosting people, but I don't think we've done a great job anymore of hosting God. So we're having great gatherings of people, but nobody leaves saying God did anything. They say it was fun. They say the music was great, they were entertained, great show. But I didn't hear anybody say, I went in there and my tumor shrunk. I have been addicted to drugs all my life and I walked out of that building and I never wanted them again. That's when you know God's in the room.
Yes.
And if you want that kind of stuff, you can't put all your efforts into hosting people.
Yes.
You got to learn how to host God. And I want to talk about that. I set up the stage for it. Wet their appetite. Men are going to talk about that. But first let me tell you about some guys that are very, very, very important to us.

When I started my church, it was. I just wanted God in the building and I didn't really care what happened around it. And that wasn't good. I had people parking in dirt. I had people having awful parking lot experiences. We had traffic backups. You know, we had people in long lines checking kids in. We had inefficiencies everywhere that were a deterrent. But my focus wasn't all that. My focus is once people crossed into the doors of that sanctuary, I was all over that. I mean, every detail of the experience. I was involved in it because I wanted no less than a move of God every single week. Not waiting for 2:12 or special services. I mean, week in and week out. And I think if you talk to people that attended or followed or followed our ministry those years, it was intense. And man, we had so much stuff that would happen, we couldn't read them all. I would stand up sometimes on Sunday and just read emails of praise reports and we couldn't even get to all of them because there was such an intense move of God in the building. Your generation came along and said, you know what, there's a lot more going on than just in the sanctuary. So they were very good at making sure people had a great experience and I wasn't akin to that. So I really shifted and did everything I could to make sure the things going on outside the sanctuary were orderly and efficient and made for a positive experience. I would say now the pendulum has swung too far and making sure people are comfortable. But do we have a service where God's comfortable going there? That concerns me.
Yes, sir.
So at our church, I've told you guys, let's script it, let's rehearse, let's practice, let's be excellent, but let's make room for God moments. Tell me what you think about that.
Yeah. That was a conversation from the very beginning, which for me, the background, my only other church experience was one that was extremely scripted. Scripted. There was a 17 and a half minute time limit, you know, there. We could not exceed that. The songs were planted and so on and so forth. And so when I was here, you've always taught about the law of exposure, right? The second you're exposed to something and it hits you. You want to, you want others to experience the same thing.
It creates an appetite.
It creates an appetite. And I think that's where now we are seeing in our church, both east and west coast, there is a hunger and there's a desire for that move amongst us. Just a few weeks ago you were preaching and I remember we had the debrief in the back and you told us, you said this was the first time in a while when you were like, I don't know if I'm going to be able to preach today. Because the room had just. I mean it was because God was, God was in this place.
God was in the room.
And, and you said something though, taking it back even a few months before that. You prayed with us one morning and you said, lord, I pray that you would give them the desire to not talk in worship, to not teach in worship, but to lead in worship by exemplifying. You said something to that effect. And that marked me. And that day that I'm talking about this entire platform, our entire team was so hungry for God, they were worshiping themselves. And I think that that leaked out into the congregation. They got hungry. They were desperate for a move of God, for his presence, for his, for his, his word, what he was going to say in those moments. And I think that is what is starting to happen more and more often.
Just like you said with God, everything has purpose.
Yes, sir.
I'm getting ready to do an 8 to 10 week praise and worship series that I've been warning everybody in a good way, it's going to change everything.
Yes, sir.
Because I've always believed that people can't fully possess something they don't understand.
Yes.
There's a lot of people that are clapping and have no idea why they're clapping. They're raising their hands, they have no idea why they're raising their hands. Maybe even if they get rid of excited, they jump, but they have no idea what's happening while they're jumping. And so what I want to do is come behind it and give people the series. I'm naming it Heavenly Chaos.
Come on now.
Because there is an unseen world.
Yes.
That the God, the God that the Bible says and God says is the actual parent realm. It is the unseen realm. It is invisible to the eye. But the Bible says that it is set up and the dark kingdom is set up in a very regimented manner. It is very organized. So Satan is very organized against you. He's very organized. He's not divided against himself. He's Very regimented. And so there is a way where God has set things up spiritually as well. And when those two kingdoms clash, we are meant to always overcome. And so there is a great conflict that ensues in a realm we can't see. It's not just fun fireworks and flickering on boards going off. There is strategic spiritual conflict going on above your head that can determine outcomes.
Yes, sir.
You can praise stuff away, you can praise stuff in, you can worship things out, you can worship things in. But I'm not sure that people is aware that anything is going on except what's happening in the room.
Right.
And there are things going on above your head that if you saw the clash of those worlds, it would frighten everybody to no end.
Absolutely.
And so I'm trying to bring what we do in praise and worship and try to give them insight into how this is affecting this. And this is affecting this.
Yes, sir.
So any comments that you have on that, I'm just kind of talking right here and want to see if you have any insights on that. I want us to worship in such a way that there is a little bit of a warfare element to it.
Absolutely. And I think like you said, though, in the pursuit of comfort and trying to make environments comforting for the individual, I understand the intention. I don't find anything wrong with that.
And we've done a lot of it. Not to be hypocritical.
Absolutely.
We've done a lot of it.
Absolutely. But like you said, you cannot possess a thing until you understand it. And I do think, you know, I'm one and I. And I watch how I say this because it's not so much that I want to possess the things. I want to go after the Lord. I want to encounter Him. I want to turn my affection to Him. And then all these other things that you're describing come as a result. But what a lot of people don't understand is they're missing out on a lot. There's a lot of peace. There is a lot of joy, There's a lot of hope. There is countless restorations that these people can be experiencing. They're talking about man. I'm dealing with this and I'm dealing with that. And I can't shake the anxiety. The peace that surpasses all understanding can be found in the environment that you're. That you're describing. And you've said it. Environments. The law of environments. You cannot expect a cactus that can dry a thrive in Phoenix, Arizona, to thrive in Antarctica. There's something to be Said the environment won't allow it. Exactly.
And some of us, there's no place where God does not want to move amongst his people, but the environment doesn't allow it. I would be a frustrated God.
Come on now.
You know, if I gave in the word keys to spiritual breakthrough and bringing heaven into the building. If they gave keys and people just totally ignored them, Come on now. And said, I got this and I can do it better than you and I know what I'm doing. And by the way, we're selling a lot and we're streaming a lot right now. So if you stay outside the parking lot, God, we're a little bit better off. We got this. That is to me, we want to be so sensitive to people, but at the expense of being insensitive to God. And the fact is a lot of people don't like messy worship. When I think some of these churches that don't allow for real breakthrough expression, there is a time where God will just bring someone in the room. You know, Jesus was in what I call the boys locker room when the woman with the alabaster box, Come on now. This was not at the beginning of his ministry, this was at the end. Because the Bible says she actually was anointing him for his burial. So after three and a half years, what has happened? Familiarity.
Yes, sir.
I got this. I've heard all of his sermons, I've seen all of his miracles. If he heals somebody, no big deal. I've only seen it a thousand times. If he cast out a devil, no big deal. He's been doing it in every city we've gone in. So he walks in this particular house. And the very most common of Hebrew traditions of someone entering your house was not even kept. I mean, familiarity, highest level. And the Bible says in came a woman. And that woman walked straight in that boy's locker room. Jesus was not greeted with a kiss. Jesus was not offered any food. Jesus was not had his. He did not have his feet washed from his day's journey. Nothing that a commoner, he got none of it. And so this woman came in and took her life saving broke it over his feet. Now it shamed the rest of that room because they started criticizing her. And people who are not willing to worship on a high level will criticize those that do. And so they stood around and said, who is this woman? And if he knew what kind of woman this was touching him, this is such a waste. And all this, that and other. And Jesus said, leave her alone. He said what she just did. Will be preached about basically forever. And we're still talking about it today. But what happened? She changed that atmosphere because the Bible says. And the fragrance filled the whole room.
Yes, sir.
And what happened was. I think it was a rediscovery of the 12 disciples. At no point. At no point can we skip over the protocols of Jesus because he'll go out in the street and find somebody that will worship him. Right. If his own people won't do it.
My gosh.
And so that's what I want. As extravagant. Again, the Bible says she broke the box. I don't want to do my praise and worship sermon now.
Man, this is good.
She broke the box. When you break something, you can't pour it. When you pour it, it comes out clean. When you break it, it runs everywhere, and you can't control where it runs. And I don't see alabaster box worship anymore. I looked up here on our stage the other Sunday, and we got into about the third song, fourth song maybe, and there was only two people still standing.
Yes.
Everybody else had hit the floor.
Absolutely.
Okay, well, that's not good for camera shots, and that's not good for. Forget that.
Yes.
I could care less how it looks on camera if this one over here, if fear is being broken, if this marriage is being put back together. You know, Andrew, people always ask me, why do you do your salvation calls after worship?
Talk about it, sir.
How many thousands of people do we see get saved? And they ain't even heard the gospel preached. They've just been in the environment. If you've got the right environment, Jesus is easy. I don't have to preach you up to him.
Right. He reveals himself.
Exactly. That's so good. He reveals himself. They're already experiencing him. What I've done is just gone up there and give the opportunity. I don't have to beg. How long do I. I don't probably give 45 seconds for them to raise their hand and let me know. After that, you know, We've got our 17 people in the room that have raised their hand, and we off and running.
Yes, sir.
The next service, 24 people in the room that's off and running. Then online, the same thing is happening by the hundreds.
Exactly.
And so I'm all about taking that atmosphere and letting God move in the environment that he desires.
You said it from the very beginning. I'll never forget it. The scripture that is often quoted, but it's very profound. If we lift him up, he will draw on him. And I think that's what we're beginning to see is because you're not having to fight the atmosphere. You're not having to sell it.
Right.
He reveals himself. He longs to lavish his love upon his sons and his daughters. I mean, and especially in a region like this one, you know, where it is. Very intellectually driven. I can't reason this out. You know, I can't explain the girl who in this very room had a cane at the top of last year, did what she could, walk into the front of the stage, lifting her one good side of her body, bringing her arm up, and now she's jumping in the choir. That happened in an atmosphere of worship. And I'm trying to. I think, to your point, people don't. They don't know this anymore.
They don't.
They. And there's some houses and I. And to give credit to the movements that are. That are going after it. But it's. It's not.
It's not as widespread.
Yes. People are afraid to go there.
I've had many services where, you know, I've looked down, opened my eyes and was going to give an altar call and look down. There's already people down there. I've not said a word.
Yes, sir.
And then there's been times where I've seen guys come up with tears running down their face and literally dragging their needles and their stuff and just pulling it out of their pockets and just throwing it on the altar. I mean, and just. And you know, and those people are serving God with families and kids today.
Come on.
And I remember, you know, them being 22 years old, their life was a wreck. They was in a crack house. And what happened? They came up during the praise and word. They couldn't take it.
Yes.
There was such a confrontation.
Yes.
And a conflict where the goodness of God overcame the darkness that was in their life. And they had to respond.
Yes.
The anointing destroys the yoke and removes the burden. And I don't care how good and how talented you are, if the anointing is not in the room, there is no yokes that are destroyed and there is no burdens that are removed. We're just simply having a good time.
Exactly.
And do I believe worship should be enjoyable? Of course. In the presence of the Lord is the fullness of joy. At his right hand are pleasures forevermore. But the fact is, I want us get back to the place where have we done what's necessary to get God in the room.

I want to talk about and it's amazing how about a half hour of our time's already gone. You know, I was raised in a Pentecostal environment, which basically to those of you who don't know what that means, it means we believe in the present day move ministry and gifts of the Spirit. So we believe, you know, signs and wonders and words of wisdom, words of knowledge, prophetic utterances, tongues, the interpretations of tongues, gifts of faith, healing, miracles. We believe in all that stuff today and have witnessed it many times. So me being raised Pentecostal, I remember hearing Ohio that wasn't a real good service today, man. We were off today. God don't have off services. God don't have a bad Sunday.
That's too good. God don't let he didn't have bad days.
God doesn't leave on Sunday and say, man, I missed it, but next Sunday I'm going to be on point. That's not how it works, but it's comical looking back on it because I remember, yeah, we had a bad service. The Bible says God inhabits the praise of his people. People who've been around my ministry have heard me say this, but there's a lot of people on podcast that are new to me and hope. You control the amount of God you experience.
Absolutely.
That is totally in your hands. That has no bearing on how anointed the praise and worship leader is. How anointed the band is has no bearing on that. You control the amount of God you experience. If God inhabits praise and I give God a lazy, slothful praise, then I have given him a small amount of room in which to operate in. Therefore, I have experienced a small God. Is God small? No. But I've experienced a small God because my praise gave him no room to function.
Come on now.
But when I get out here and I give an extravagant praise, and would you say that I'm probably one of your hardest praisers in the room?
Absolutely.
55 years old, for three years doing church, 250, 300 times a year, and I come into service wide open, hands in the air. And when you give God a big praise, then God inhabits a wider space. If you get 3,000 people in a building, come on now, with extravagant, uninhibited praise unto God, you are going to release something in there that can begin to change cities, change environments, change atmospheres, and becomes a light and a magnet that just draws all kinds of people.
Absolutely.
For years, Redemption had a slogan, can't be explained, only experience. People say, what's it like at Redemption? It's like, you just need to come.
You got to show up.
I can't tell you. You just need to come see for yourself. I don't ever. That's not really the slogan that we use anymore. It's not a tagline. But that's the way I want it to always be.
That's the DNA.
Exactly. And we're trying to get the right pieces in the right place to do that. Not just on the east coast, where we did it for Sloan, but now on the West Coast.
Come on now.
So I'm going to give you some finishing remarks here as we've already gone past our half hour mark. What do you want to see God do this year with all the people that experience, whether virtually or in a building, when they come into a praise and worship spirit at Redemption, what do you want them to leave saying?
I do. Got to preface it with this. You've said from the very beginning, I feel like I'm quoting you in front of you, you know, all this, all this stuff. But I've learned so much. Sound precedes movement, right? Nothing will move without first being heard, you know, and it's the sound of the praise, it's the sound of the worship that's going to make the mark, because that's where the movement's going to follow. And what I want and what I pray for continuously, you can ask any member of our team who has heard this a million times, is I want a hunger to come back, a stirring to come back to where people have that sense of, like you said, bringing forth the extravagant praise is not something that I have to fight extremely hard to release. And it is a sacrifice of praise. I'm not saying it doesn't require effort, but that they're so aware that they. They're. They're going to come in and say, God, I'm going to give you everything I have. And they shout and they praise and they sing and they jump and they move. Not just because those things, the expression is, the goal is the end goal. Those. Those things are the result of them trying to allow God to inhabit that praise. And then as a result, they encounter him. They meet him face to face. And the atmosphere that comes as a result of that, the peace, the joy. I mean, I can get choked up just talking about it, because I've seen it in my own life, coming from the background that I did, and knowing what happens after you have a intimate encounter with the creator of the universe, the maker of heaven and earth, and who knows you and loves you so intimately, so closely, and you experience him in that light. I want them to leave saying, oh, that changed me. That marked me. My life has changed. My family's lives has changed. My kids, my wife, my husband, whoever the case may be. Things are different now as a result of what took place in that room. That's what I want to see.
Guys, I want you to tune in. The one thing that I do is I do many things so I can promote this thing while I'm doing this thing, but virtually online. If you're not within driving distance of one of our campuses in Greenville, South Carolina, or San Jose, California, I'm going to spend a long time. I say eight or 10 weeks. I might go half a year. But I feel like God has tasked me with putting in the environment what is a true praise and worship experience. As desired by God.
Come on.
Not in our eyes.
Yes, sir.
As desired by God. And a lot of what he wants is foolishness to us, but wisdom to him.
Yes.
And I believe we're going to see breakthroughs. I believe the eyes are going to turn toward redemption services and people as they begin to hunger for a move of God. And when people just connect with what's happening in the room, their lives are going to be changed. I really believe that can happen. And I'm after it. I'm chasing it. I'm after God in that fashion. So you'll be thinking about. It's going to be called heavenly chaos. It's going to be starting the first of the year, and I'd love to see you. Thank you, Andrew, for being with me.
Thank you, sir.
And those of you that may be in ministry or may be praise and worship leaders or creative leaders, call in here because we desire to help. Excuse me, you. And help others in any way that we can. And we would love to be a resource to you. And if you've never been to one of our service, consider yourself personally invited by me to do so today. But until next time, this is Ron and Hope Unfiltered. Hopefully next time you'll get to see her face, which is prettier than both of ours put together.
Come on now.
And she'll be back with me, making the room brighter. We love you. Can't wait to see you next time. God bless.
