Presence Over Production with Guest: Tye Tribbett | Ron + Hope: Unfiltered

A recorded episode of Ron + Hope: Unfiltered (Hope absent) in which Ron Carpenter and guest Tye Tribbett discuss prioritizing spiritual presence over high production in contemporary church services. They promote an upcoming Transfer Conference (early May, presence-driven worship), reflect on generational shifts that favored polished production over experiential encounters, and emphasize cultivating hunger for the Holy Spirit, honor for spiritual leaders, and impartation through laying on of hands.

Foreign. You know what, guys, this is Ron and Hope. Unfiltered. Excuse me. Real raw and relevant. And no, she's not here. Okay, I know, I know you come to see her. You really don't come see me. I'm kind of the sideshow. I get it. But hey, I do have like one of the next best things. Don't leave because I'm about to bring in Pastor Ty Tribbett. And yeah, we're going to talk a little bit about transfer conference because he's one of the main gentlemen that I wanted to bring here to talk to a generation about some things, but we're not. This isn't a conference promo. I want to talk to him just about some things that's on my heart. You know, a while back, I got a lot of feedback. I got, honestly, probably the most feedback I've ever gotten off of a podcast out of something me and Hope did called Weird Church. And I got emotional when I was talking about it, talking about, you know, the fact is, I'm all about embracing the new. I'm not hypocritical. I have untold millions of dollars of production. I'm surrounded by technicians and engineers right now, all who are better than me and no more than me. I've embraced the future and where we're going. But the Bible does talk about re digging old wells. And I do think that sometimes when we embrace a wineskin, we can lose the wine. And I want to talk about a little bit of that because there's some things as a generation I think that are generationally missing. But I just wanted to bring somebody else and let get their perspective. So, you know, we got someone who I think is reaching iconic status. He's just a stalemate in the gospel industry, Pastor Ty. But more than the pastoring, more than the artistry, he's my friend. He's a brother and has been my friend for some time and I'm glad he was agreed to be on here with me today. So, look, you need to text somebody, call somebody. You need to share this. You need to let people know. If you haven't done it yet, subscribe. I don't know if you're getting me through YouTube. I don't know if you're getting me through your favorite streaming platform. Doesn't matter to me. Just let somebody know because I'm going to tell you I've had this one circled and I've been waiting for this conversation sometime. Hope will be back with me next week. She's so amazing. She's so beautiful. She's doing the Come Higher conferences. She does four of them a year. I think they're already booked through like midway through 2026 and that thing she's already flown to the east coast and she, I think, starts it like right now. And so she won't be here with me this week, but we're just going to have some time and talk about what God wants to transfer from generation to generation. And with that, I want to bring up my friend and my co. My co worker in Christ, Pastor Ty. Come on up with me, man. Come on up. How you doing, my friend?
What's up, my brother?
How you feeling it? I'm telling you what, I'm in Cali and we enjoy good weather. But behind you right there in Florida, is it looking as nice as. Is it as nice as it looked back there?
It's as nice as Cali right now, brother. Y' all sharing the weather with us this time. So thank you.
I. Let me get this out of the way. Not because I don't care afterthought, but you know, the 8th and the 9th, and I think, is it the 10th guys? The conference? 8th, 9th and 10th. 8th through 10th or 8th, 9th of May, 7th, 8th and 9th, something like that of May is when we're doing the transfer conference and it is leaning heavy toward a worship conference. I haven't done a worship conference in about 20 years. And I hate to say worship conference because it's not just for worship leaders or band members. It's not that. It is going to be a presence driven conference. It's not a preachathon. It's not where I'm going to Try to have 12 of your favorite preachers and see who can out preach the other one. It is. I ain't really got but two sessions that are dedicated to a word going forth. It's just going to be presence driven and for a generation that wants to pursue God. And you're going to be basically that Thursday. You got three different things you're going to be doing with us that you've agreed to do on that Thursday. And I just appreciate you coming. You just want to speak to that before we get into some of the other stuff.
Yeah, I can't.
I can't imagine what should somebody expect if they've never been in the building when pastor ties in there.
Oh, my Lord. People call it people. Thank you first of all for having me on the show. Thank you for having me at the conference, man. You've been a friend through the two decades. My Family. My children and I love you and your family. So thank you for this opportunity, man. I really appreciate you. My friend and Pastor Hope, who I love so much. That's my. That's my twin right there. I miss her.
I miss her.
We love her as well. This conference is like no other. Like you just explained. When it's based on the presence of God, it makes it so powerful because most people have their agenda, and their agenda has to be met. Most people have their goals and their vision, and that has to be what it is when you leave it open for the presence of God. Do you understand? That is the atmosphere of miracles. That is the atmosphere of breakthrough. I'm coming to be part of it, first of all, and to impart in it as well. I think there's going to be a transfer from death to life, life, from, from, from, from.
From.
From set. From tears to joy, like in the spiritual realm. And they're going to be some mental. You understand what I'm saying? People are going to start going from Jacob to Israel, like, whoa, I was walking with him one way, but I have another mantle on my life now, a kingly, priestly, princely mantle on me. So I'm excited to be a part of it, man. I plan on experiencing the transfer as well. Like, don't leave me out. You know what I mean? So thank you for having me, man. I can't wait for it.
Let me. Let me tell you where I'm going. I'm going to set it up. Give me three minutes to tell you this story, and I promise I'm not going to talk the whole time. But when you get this, when you get me in this arena, I can talk, man. And I'm going to try to hold it, hold it down and. And you be my guest and let you do most of the talking. I'm a. I'm a Holy Ghost guy. I'm, you know, gunslinger, you know, right now, you know, that kind of church. Especially with those maybe leaning more toward the Ark model. I love Ark. I'm good friends with all those leaders. I know them well. But people who've kind of embraced the ark model, I think what happened to my generation and those older than me, Pastor Ty, is the millennial generation looked at them, and most of the guys in my generation didn't end well. It was a train wreck. So they had this power ministry. The signs of their ministry was power and signs and wonders and miracles. But their life, you know, imploded. And I don't want to go through the list of names but some of these people, personal friends and just got to the later years in life, and something just came off the rails. So you got to. You got the next generation saying, hey, I don't want to end like that, right? And so I think that they associated. Any people who kind of move in that Holy Ghost stuff, you know, their life's going to end up coming off the rails, and I don't want my life to do that. So they proverbially threw the baby out with the bathwater. We went toward the scripted, the polished, the Ableton, the click track. We went toward everything being highly produced, highly savvy, highly marketed, highly branded. And the buildings are packed and the money's flowing. So when the building's full and the money's flowing, they don't listen to nobody. But I'm looking at a whole generation now that has never experienced at any time things that I experienced every Sunday coming up, casting out devils. I started calling out witchcraft this past Sunday, and we had to get buckets because people started throwing up all over the church. And, I mean, I'm out here in the San Francisco Bay Area, thousands of people in here. Some of these people ain't never even heard of Jesus. And I got the pedal all the way to the floor, Holy Ghost. And the more I turn it loose, the more the building packs out. And we're up to three services now, and this building has got two balconies in it. I mean, this is. It's crazy what's happening, and it is just an unleashed move of God. But I looked at the generation, and it makes me sad because the pastors are the handlers. I don't think it's that that generation does not want the Holy Ghost. I think it's that the handlers are not going to let it get to them, because I've talked to some of the main leaders, and they've just looked at me and said, ron, what you're talking about is never going to happen in my church. They just look at me and say, it's just never going to happen. And I'm like, wow. So we kind of got the Holy Spirit. You know, if you want the Holy Spirit, go down Hall C and go back to room 12. And there's a couple of people back there that'll talk to you. And we're not going to promote it because we're kind of embarrassed that they're even here. And so I'm sitting here saying these God moments that I had as a child, as a teenager, in college, and in my Formative years as an adult, they changed me. I had services Pastor Ty, that I left, and I was never the same ever again. What say you? Do you have that perspective and speak freely if you've got some pushback and say, you know, I see it a little bit different because you're my friend and I respect your opinion, but my heart is hurting because I think there is something that God wants to do that the people in the middle leading them is not letting it get to them.
I think I'm with you in that. I'm in the middle of generations that I remember the Holy Ghost Pentecost services where the fire from heaven fell and nobody was the same when we left. I mean, we were just blown away by the presence of God and he did something in each of us. And now I know the new school where the lights and. And you know what I mean, the fog machines and the lyrics on the screen and the sound checks and all. I ain't never have sound check growing up in my grandmother's church, no. But I understand excellence. I understand the spirit of excellence, and I understand how technology, you know, evolves and all that stuff. I'm right with you, Pastor Ron. I mean, you have an AI app. Like, do you understand, bro? You are like the most. You're more advanced in technology than a lot of pastors and bishops and preachers that I even know. So I know that you embrace that newness with the same fire, though. My concern. My concern is that it's being branded now. Like, church is branded now. Church is a brand now. Church is. It's its own thing. It's like an industry. It's its own outside of God, outside of the direction of God, outside of the influence of God, outside of the leading of God. Do you remember when Jesus. When Mary and Joseph left, you know, the conference, so to speak, the. The. The feast, and Jesus wasn't with them, and they didn't realize for three days for. For a day that he wasn't with them. We've developed structures and systems that can function literally without Jesus and still call it church. And that's what we've done. If you got the signs, welcome home, welcome to church. That's church. If you have these certain things that we've established as church, it's a system. It is become what the church experience is to us. And we've learned to accept that and not him.
Right?
And that's the SC about it, my friend. I don't mind different approaches. So I'm not gonna say I oppose what you Say. I'm saying we don't have to have Terry services to experience the presence of God. I know you agree with what I'm saying. I don't think that they have to do the same things we did to experience the same God we experienced. I think the so, because I know God could you. God could say Moses, right? You know, use your hands and Joshua by. By, you know, everywhere your feet shall tread. God can use different methods to perform the same thing. I just feel like we are not. We are going systemically and not spiritually. We have systems, we have blueprints. I love the ark as well. A lot of pastor friends of mine in that, and I love all the heads and stuff. I met with them, and I love them very much. But we're led by systems and not the spirit, which is why all the churches look the same and all of us feel the same, but we don't feel him. When God told Noah to build the ark, he had no blueprint on how to establish. Speaking of ark, on how to establish his thing, even in gospel music. And I'm not trying to expand the conversation. I don't mind new sounds, the bop, all these things, but it lost the conviction, it lost the oil. It's losing all of these things. And I know y' all can say that about my. My stuff, but just really sit and listen to it. I try to be committed to the oil, committed to the gospel. Even though the film might be different, I want God to still be there. So no matter how he's packaged, we should still know it's him. Pastor Ron. We should still know it's him.
I don't think that one has to be the enemy of the other. I think that there are hybrid things where I can embrace the technology of the future and the savviness of marketing without having services that are impotent and void of a move of God. And I'm like you. I don't believe I got to stay in church four hours either. But the fact is, you know, building our buildings with chairs that come all the way up to the stage, and there's not even a place to pray for people. I mean, people who have been going to church 10 years and nobody has ever laid hands on them. And I can take you through the Bible and show you a million times where there are some things you can't teach, some things are caught and things are activated by the laying on of hands. There's healing by the laying on of hands, the anointing that destroys the yoke and removes Burdens happened by the laying on of hands. And these things are not embraced as a part of our new church culture.
And I believe it's a. I'm sorry. Go ahead.
We had a writing camp last week and I got to go to my ad and then we can just take off the rest of the time and talk. We won't talk. I had a writing. I say I had a writing. Red Worship, our record label, had a writing camp here last week and I met with all of them. And I don't want to throw the names out, but along with our guys, we had some of the most prolific songwriters in America in here at our writing camp. And I went there and I said, I want about 15 minutes of your time. And I said, we have done amazing. I said, everything follows the sound that it makes. And I said, we have done an amazing job in this generation capturing the sound of the age. I said, we've done a terrible job at understanding the sound of a moment. And I said, while we're singing the sound of the age, we trample over a thousand moments. And I said, basically what we have, I said, I want you writing songs that lead to moments. I said, that's who Red Worship is. I said, I want songs that lead to moments. I'm not Interested in verse, 1, 2, 3, abridge and a chorus and modulate. I'm not interested in that. I'm interested in where does this song lead, leave the congregation? And it was silence in there. And one of. I mean, if I threw this name out, everybody like, wow. He came to me with tears in his eyes. He said, I have never heard a pastor in this generation talk like that. He said, I've been waiting for somebody to give me permission to write like that. And he had tears running down his face. And so let me. We got some great sponsors, man. They help us pay the bills. I'm grateful. I want to get back to Pastor Ty. Pastor Ty. Talking about songs that lead to moments, the songs of the age versus missing moments. I'm all about a moment. I don't care if we get to the fourth song. I could care less. I told our guys, get all the ego off the stage. I don't care how much you rehearse to get to your song. If God blows the doors open at number two and the altars start filling up, that's where we're going to camp. That's what we're going to camp and we're going to put it on TV and we're going to put it on social media because that's who we are and that's what I embrace. And they say Gen Z's coming full circle back to it.
Yeah. Well, I think it has a lot to do with what you said before and what you're saying now. What you're saying is I'm telling the praise team. We need to get back to. I'm telling the praise team. I'm telling the praise team. That's the leader. That's leadership. I mean, the oil flows from the head down. You can't avoid scripture so if that's coming from the top, man the body, the experience is going to be amazing. My concern or our caution is this is not coming from the top for most leaders, or this is not coming from the top. This is not becoming a priority for most leaders. And so we're seeing a culture of church with music but no presence. When you prioritize presence, that's when your church matures. That's when the spirit of God is our anchor and our guide. But when you prioritize, you know, props or whatever else, that's when we get those other things. But you are prioritizing it. And it takes more of us, more of the leadership, it takes more coming from the top to say, this is what we stand on. This is the foundations of this church. This is the ground I want you guys to, you know, cultivate as we move to the word moment. You understand what I'm saying? But you're sensitive to that, and you know that, and you convey that. I don't think a lot of people do. I don't think they. I ain't gonna say I don't think they care, but I don't think they're sensitive to that.
Do they? This, I know this is, of course, is your opinion. I agree with you. Is it? They don't care. Is it? They. They don't understand, you know, A Move of God pastor is hard. I'm exhausted when I get home on Sunday. Because when A Move of God happens, I become a director. I'm directing altar workers. Band, raise it up. Band, pull it down. I start the chant. You know, I'm not a great singer, but I got enough to go in and mess with it and get out. I mess with it and I'll jump back out. So I'll go in, I'll start, you know, if I want to start a hallelujah chant and something. We breaking stuff in the bed. I'll get in there, I'll get the chant started. I'm raising the band back up. Give me more. I'm directing it all towards. So I got all this going on. I don't know. Can you teach that?
No, man. That's what I was about to say. That's a Davidic oil. That's something in you. That is a desire. That is something you want to experience in the moment. You said something earlier. Churches are packed and money is good. If that's all the leader is concerned about, they're not going to have that extra desire. But I still want him, but I still need him. If the place is packed and the money is flowing, you still gotta have that. I'm not satisfied without him. You have that. So in the moment, you can see what it takes to have that craving satisfied. Good God, help me to have that hunger satisfied. Hunger and thirst after righteousness. And then I will fill you. But if you don't have the hunger and thirst, there's nothing to be filled. Pastor Ron, you got it. You got the money and you got the crowd. But you're saying that's not enough. So every time you get up, whether it's Sunday or Wednesday or whether it's this conference, conference, you're going to go for that presence, because you're not there for the crowd, and you're not there for the money. You're there for him, so you're not satisfied until he's there. And I think a lot of leaders have become satisfied with the other things and not just him.
I can't make people want what they don't want. But this transfer conference, I'm going to offer an avenue for maybe Jim Z. And even some millennials who say, you know what? I'm not impressed with the lights and the smoke and the signs anymore. Something that I'm supposed to have that I'm missing. And I believe there's going to be a transfer. And this is the first conference that I have ever planned, and the plan is for it to come off the rails. That's the plan. We're having a planning day all day tomorrow, and I'm going into it, and how can I plan to let God do whatever he wants? Whoa. In any plan, in any service, this is the first time I've ever gone into it like that because people think I run by the seat of my pants. I'm actually pretty organized. But in this one, I'm just leaving open spaces where it can go anywhere. And I don't know who wants that, but I'm going to offer it to whoever wants it. And that's why I got you coming.
Exactly. You're going to find out, I believe that more people want it than not. I think this is so necessary to transfer conference because of course, we think of Elijah and Elisha or Elisha. But I just think there with this new generation, sometime there's less fear of God and less honor for what's for who's gone before us. It's an honor issue as well. So the fear of God is one thing, and it's honoring those who have gone before us. Even though you know for a fact I'm not going to do it like them. I don't see it like them.
Right.
The honor. The oil will flow through the honor. I think we just not only lost the way, like, because there's a lot of things. I don't do that the way my dad or my grandmother did it when they were pastors and bishops and emeritus of the church. I don't do it that way. So we got rid of the way, and we got rid of the honor. I don't do it my grandmother's way, but I still honor the oil. I honor the anointing. I honor the presence and the power of God on our life. So. And my father after my father after her. And I believe the oil flows through the honor. Even though you don't do it like them, even though God's going to give it to you. Completely different. Honor those that have gone before you. Glean from them. What can I get? They don't get wisdom. He who walks with the wise shall be wise. That's not important to this generation. That's not priority to us, because we got the look and we got the swag and we got the charisma and the energy, and that's all that matters in this generation. But my prayer is that the fear of God be restored and that the honor be restored. And that's. And that's where I believe the oil will flow. Even at the transfer conference. Man, I'm excited and I can't wait to be part of this.
You're right. The pomp and the pageantry and the church culture I could care less for. But there's something about the honor thing. He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet receives a prophet's reward. So the receiving is not on whether they're not a prophet. The receiving is whether or not I see them as a prophet. So when you won't even let. When pastors want to come down, so far they won't even let you call them a pastor. Just call me by my first well, I receive you like I perceive you. And if you're not. If you're not a man of God, if you're just John or you're helping me, or you're just Larry, I want to go out and I want to have. I want to grill hamburgers with you. But when I need a miracle, I can't come to you because I don't perceive you like that.
You're helping me.
So there's. I can't. In other words, until I see you right, I cannot get the gift of God on your life. So I have to perceive you correctly. Then what it is God is putting you to bring to me, I can access it.
Jesus could do no great thing in His. They didn't see him.
They didn't see him.
They didn't see him as a miracle worker.
It wasn't Jesus anointing, it was the way they saw him. They didn't receive him properly. So because they didn't see him properly, nothing was happening. And because we no longer have honor for our leaders and our leaders don't want it. I don't want that honor stuff. I don't want that. Then we have benign churches because people don't. But people say, he ain't no different than me. I want my men of God to be different than me. I want them to be. And I'm going to tell you something. When I was in my formative years, I didn't have a lick of money. We were struggling. We started a church. I started it with three people in a warehouse. And we'd load up sardines, put a Kool Aid and a cooler, drive a broken down car all over America, wait outside, sit in the nosebleed section for parsley. Jake's, Benny hen, whoever. And I would just sitting there and in the nosebleed section, Pastor Ty. And I would just hope something on their life would fall on me. Just something. Something fall on me. And now I'm 56, I got this whale and I'm turning around saying, all right, I want to give mine away. And there's no line. There's no line. Oral Roberts laid hands on me. My father laid hands on me. Myles Monroe threw his coat on me. Bishop Jakes laid his hands on me. Reinhardt Bonnke laid his hands on me. Benny Hinn laid his hands on me. I have all this impartation. So now I see myself getting gray hair right around here. And I want to turn around and I say, who can I give this to? And they're like, we don't, we don't want your stuff.
Oh, man.
And that's a problem. And so I'm like, that's a problem. God, who did I give it to? Who did I give it to?
Let me tell you something. At transfer conference, they're going to be lined up to receive that. Trust me, man. And I think that's an issue. That people are not hungry for that oil. I think that's a terrible issue. That people are not like it hasn't been cultivated in us. I mean, I'm thinking of kings now. When the new King was born, he was a little boy, but the whole time you're a prince, you're going to take the throne, right? Yes. Those are the things. That's the marketplace. That's the. They, they learned, they were cultivated the whole time. My fear is that the youth or Gen Z or whatever, they're not being cultivated in the oil, they're not being cultivated in kingdom things. And that's why when they get that little hit on Sunday, it's cool. But it's not enough to develop a hunger. So parents, parents and overseers and people who have children or whatever, I charge you to train up a child in a way that they should go to keep, keep the ways of God before them, to keep the fear of God before them, to keep prioritizing the presence of God. Because we, if we're not cultivated, we could develop no hunger, right? No hunger. And I, I pray that that flips in Jesus name, brother. It has to happen.
Well, we're going to make space for it to happen. And I appreciate you, you know, flying literally all from Florida to Northern California to be here. And I, I was looking, I got you three times in one day. So they going to get a face full of Thai trib. And I, I really, I. Somebody's like, what do you want to happen? I don't even really know. And it, I'm at a loss because I'm, I'm the leader of it and the leader supposed to have answers, but I'm trying to articulate something that I kind of never seen before.
How do you feel about that? Are you nervous or do you feel like.
Really I'm nervous. I am nervous. But it's, it's, it's not afraid. It's not that it's nervous because God, God, I don't want to miss it. Don't let me be off. Don't let that conference in and people getting back on airplanes and I'm sitting there saying it didn't do what you wanted it to do. Amen. I feel that weight. And I don't know who's coming. I don't know if 2,000 or 10,000, I don't know, I don't know the hunger that's for it. Because I've never done a conference like this. This is not a string of preachers. This is actually a string of worship leaders and sessions that do nothing, that make space but pursue, just pursue. And then when Jesus walks in the building, you know, anything can happen.
Jesus.
And so I'm trying to get ready for. Is it Prophetic Is it healing line? Is it eating carpet? Everybody in the room? Is it high praise? Is it warfare? Wherever God wants it to go?
Thank you, Jesus.
And I. I want to be. I want to be. I want to be able to direct the flow, you know? You know, I'm talking. There's always got to be somebody that is directing the flow.
I was literally thinking that. I was literally thinking. And I trust you with the direction because the spirit is subject to the prophet. I trust you, man, with the flow of that spirit. I wonder why I hear you talk about worship so much.
Much.
Hearing you talk about praise and singing so much, I wonder why you never put out a book about worship or some type of. I know y' all did an album and the music, but I wonder why you ain't do that, bro. You might need to tap into that. You don't have to be an artist to write a book about worship.
No, I'm a worship.
I know you've done series. You've done series on it, right?
Yeah, yeah, I've done many series on it, and I probably got some things maybe I could add to it. I don't know I've ever even had anybody ask that. I just. And it may be something. I'm a worshiping pastor, and one of my frustrations, I'm going to have to talk to God about when I see him face to face. I know what needs to happen, but I can't do it. And I don't know why. God let me know what needs to happen but didn't give me the ability to take it there. I. Let me tell you something. I know when we've missed it. I know when the band's missed it. I know where it needs to go. I know what it needs to sound like. I know. I know the. I know the sound. I know when. I know when the drummer needs to change. I know, but I can't take it there myself.
God is amazing.
That's been one of my biggest frustrations.
Is that God is amazing.
I know where it's supposed to go, and then I got to turn around to my team. Team and try to get my team to take it there.
We are many members, Pastor Ron, and one body. I just see humility all over the place. Humility for you because you can't do it, and humility for the ones who you're instructing because they can't see.
We tried. We tried. I love it.
No, I'm just playing with you, man. I love it, and I love that you know that you're sensitive to it. It's like the sons of Issachar. You're sensitive to the times and what's needed in the moment. And I would encourage you. I'm inspired and encouraged just listening to you talk, talk on this. If you were to write a book, I would definitely buy it and be better by it, man. So I ain't putting it out there like that. This about transfer conference, but just a little food for thought.
Pastor. Look, man, let's get out of here. Love you much. You're my friend before anything, but I respect all the gifts of God on your life and I'm so glad that you're in my life. I appreciate you taking some time out to come with us out here in May for transfer conference. And until next time, let's do this again because it was fun, man.
I love you, my brother, and be blessed.
Signing out, baby. Signing out.
Peace.
Hey, guys. Until next time, it's Ron and Hope. Real raw and relevant. I hope you've enjoyed this and the pretty one. We'll be back next week. Love you guys. Blessings.
