Ron + Hope: Unfiltered - How to Guard Your Heart with Guest: Denise Boggs

A conversational YouTube episode (Ron + Hope: Unfiltered) featuring Pastor Denise Boggs about 'guarding the heart.' Hosts and guest frame many life problems (addiction, broken marriages, depression, anger) as fruits that grow from an unguarded or wounded heart. They cite Proverbs 4:23 and other biblical passages, distinguish guarding the heart from walling it off, trace heart issues to childhood experiences and family dynamics, and offer practical safeguards: guard your circle (people, places, things), protect your eyes/ears/gates (media and relationships), daily heart checks (don’t let the sun go down on your wrath), journaling, immersion in God's love/the “river of God,” and safe spiritual community or retreats (Living Waters Ministry). Episode includes sponsor messages and closes with a prayer for listeners’ healing.

Foreign. Hello, everybody. It's Ron and Hope. Unfiltered, real, raw and relevant. I am so excited that you're tuning in today. I have one of the most amazing guests with me today, Pastor Denise Boggs. If you've been listening to our podcast and anytime, if you've been a part of our life at any time, you know who Pastor Denise Boggs is. But if you're new here and you don't know who this is, please do not leave. You have got to stay and listen. This lady right here has helped thousands and thousands and thousands of people all over the world with their issues, with their problems, with relationship problems, with addiction problems, marital problems, and she's helped us personally. She has been a godsend, an angel in our life. And some of the most listened podcasts that we have has been when Pastor Denise has been a guest. So I'm so excited to have her today. So, Pastor Denise, are you in Hidden Night, North Carolina?
I am. I'm right here in Midnight, North Carolina. So good to be here.
A little slice of heaven. That's what I call it. A little slice of heaven. We are gonna talk about a subject today because you and I have talked extensively about this so many times that, you know, when you end up getting somebody at your lodge or when somebody ends up at our churches or in a counseling session or somewhere with a problem, they're at the end of their rope. It's coming with the end result. They're coming with the fruit. They are coming with a broken marriage, or they're coming with addiction problems, or they're coming with, you know, depress and anxiety and suicidal thoughts. Those are just fruits. We have not gotten to the root. And if we can ever teach people, number one, how to guard their heart, oh, my goodness, we could stop so many of these problems. But, you know, life just comes at you so fast. And I've been there, you've been there. And you're trying to pay bills and you're trying to raise kids and you're trying not to strangle people and just you're trying to survive and, you know, life's coming at you fast. And it just seems like sometimes it's too fast and you're drowning. But if we could ever slow down and just push the reset button and say, okay, God, teach me how to govern my life so that I could live this victorious life you've called me to. You said in John 10:10, the thief comes for one thing. He said, but I came that you might have life and have abundant Zoe life He. He really does want us to thrive. And I don't know that the body of Christ really believes that, you know, that God really died so that we could thrive.
Right.
And how many of us are not? And you see it over and over, don't you?
Over and over and over. Yes.
Yeah. You just. I don't know how you. How you don't go crazy yourself, Pastor Denise, with all the stories and all the problems you have to listen to. But we do have the answer. We do. Didn't say it was easy.
No, it's not easy.
It's not quick.
It's not a quick fix. It's not. I always say it's not a McDonald's drive through that we're going to do a quick. And then be happy, happy meal. No, no, no.
It's a lot of work.
It is work. It is work.
It's just like in the physical, in our body, you know, it's not quick and it's not easy to get your body in shape, physically in shape. It's doing a little thing, diligence, over a long time. Yes. And then you look back and say, wow, man, that cellulite's gone now.
Yeah, I know, I know, I know.
Yeah. So let's talk about guarding our heart. Proverbs 4. 23 says this. Above all else. That's huge.
Isn't that something? Above all else, all else. It's above all else.
Yeah. Things that you have to do and all the other commandments.
All else, guard your heart.
Why? Yeah, because out of it, it's going. Whatever's in here, your life is going to mirror.
Exactly. Exactly. So guard your heart. Forth from what's in your heart comes those issues. They start. They start really. They start showing up early in life, okay? And they're called one thing, okay. In teenage years, when we call it rebellion, you know what it is? It's the pain of the heart, okay. That's not been worked through because maybe, you know, whatever's going on with mom and dad and they said, well, they're not approachable. And so. And so instead of releasing this hurt and pain, okay, they start rebelling. So here, out of the issue, the heart, come the issues of life, all that pain. So, yeah, it starts manifesting early. Has to help early.
It does.
And it does.
Even earlier than teenage years. You see those kids, those little kids who show out and scream and holler in Walmart, and some of that is just, you know, the Bible says, when I was a child, I taught as a child. And I thought as A child. And I reasoned as a child when I became a man, I put that stuff away when I became mature. But some things are not just childish things. Some things are a reflection of what's gotten in her heart. Even as a child, you hear mom and daddy scream and oh yes, the chaos in the home, the temperatures high. So the kids are rebelling. They don't know what to do with that.
They don't know what to do with the pain because they feel it. They love mom. They love dad. Okay, they love mom and dad, but Mom's beating dad or Dad's beating Mom and it hurts their heart.
Yeah.
Because they love them both. And so what do they do with all that pain? You can't talk to mom about dad or a dad about mom because you're going to, you know, it'll come towards you, so you just press it down and see, that's what happens. The pain gets pressed down instead of work through and released. So where is it pressed into the heart.
Yeah.
And affects everything. Yes.
So the heart is not the physical beating of the blood. We're not talking about that. The heart in the Bible is our soulish man. It's our mind, it's our will, it's our emotion. Our will. You say, what's our will? The choices we make.
Choices we make. Yes. And you know what else it is? The vows we make? I will never be like my mom. Okay? I'll never be like my mom. So we said it in her mind, I will not. So that's our will. And you. And it's almost like an internal promise to yourself, I will not be like that. But guess what? The very thing then comes out.
That's right. It's like the marriages that I'll never marry him. A man like that again. I know, but you end up doing it right.
Very thing. The very thing.
I was talking to somebody the other day about their marriage, and it was a young couple and. And they were like, well, I'm just done. And, you know, I can't live with him anymore. Or I just don't feel like I'm in love anymore. And. And there was a lot of issues and, you know, I was trying to listen, validate their feelings, all the things you've told me to do. But in your mind you got this list of but I know, I know how this, how I can help you, but I'm listening. And I said to him, I said, you know, but if you leave, you still haven't solved the problem.
The problem's in you, inside you. It'll just go. It'll just be recreated in the next relationship.
Absolutely. Absolutely. So guarding our heart, Pastor Denise. How? What is somebody saying? I've never heard of this in my life. I got a lot of issues. Clearly, they're showing up in my life. Pastor Denise, I'm sitting in your parlor. What do I do?
What do I do? Okay, first of all, all right, let me say this. We talked about childhood, and we look to mom and dad to validate who we are as a child. Pastor up. You know that yourself.
Yes.
Look to your mom, you look to your dad, because that's your first experience where you're needing to know you have worth and value, to know you're loved. And First John 4 and verse 16, it said, We've known. What we've known is what we believe. Hmm. That love is what we've known. Okay, so. And then you go to amplify and it says, what we have experienced is what we believe love is. Well, okay. Well, we've experienced. So our first experiences are home with mom and dad. And so we are looking to them to love us. And so our hearts wide open, then. Okay, that is wide open. So then if their love is not God's kind of love, which is unconditional, flows constantly. Every day it's flowing. If their love is not God's kind of love, then you start not guarding new heart, but you start literally putting a wall around your heart. You start. You just start closing your heart. And so you can't even. You can't even experience love when love comes close because you've just closed your heart.
Okay, so there's a difference in guarding your heart and walling your heart.
Yeah, exactly. Exactly. And so the very thing you're needing desperately in those early. Those early years of life, you're not even able to receive. Because if dad has yelled three times now that you went and tried to talk to dad, he yelled three times, then you're going to know. You're going to close yourself. You're not going to let yourself. Okay. You know, feel that again and see, that's what we talk about. It creates stones. It creates a hardening in the heart. Okay? So now that has to be worked through, okay. Before you can even know fully how to open your heart to receive love. Okay. Cause otherwise you can literally be looking to someone abusive because your daddy was abusive. You're looking for someone. It's kind of, you know, have that loud voice that will, you know.
Because it was your first experience with love.
With love, yeah. First experience so then as an adult, okay, we go into adulthood. What? Discard your heart now. Me. Okay, well, guarding your heart means you can't let someone else's issues define you. Okay? Someone else's issues define you. Because then if they say, you know, I was going to say something, but I won't. But, you know, they just pour. They say something really harsh.
Yeah.
Okay, now, because you finally trusted them, because you couldn't trust your daddy, but you finally open your heart a little bit to trust them, and then they say something harsh. Oh, my goodness. Okay. So now their harsh words define okay.
It affects you. It affects you in a negative way. Yeah. You've got to be so strong and you gotta be so stable and you gotta be so secure in who God says you are and what the word says about you that those other people's issues don't affect you. And that is so. That's a huge task. That's why above all else.
I know, but it's a huge task, that huge task. Because then that's how you guard your heart. It's like, I love who God says I am. I know. I know the truth. Yeah.
I know I'm special and loved. Even with my cellulite.
That's part of the honor of God. I am. You know, I'm not going to let the enemy use that person's bad day to crush me. Right. They're having a bad day. But look, because I know who I am. I know God. God says about me what he says his love. And he has told me that I have great worth and value. So you know who you are.
Yeah.
That's what God.
Your heart.
See, that's what guard your heart.

There's a difference between walling our heart and guarding our heart. So walling our heart is done out of hurt pain, Trying to protect ourselves.
Self protection. Yes.
And it makes things worse. Right, but guarding our heart are things like this. Guarding your circle, not letting the wrong people in your life. Protecting your eye. Gate. Protecting your gate. What you listen to what you watch. Come on, let's talk about the correct ways to guard our heart.
Yes. And the thing is, Listen, in Galatians 5, verse 1, it says this. Don't get entangled in it. Get again with the yoke of bondage. Okay. Don't get entangled again. So you have to guard yourself, okay. By the people that you hang out with. Right?
Yeah.
Because. Yeah, because if you go back to the same type of friends, okay, Then you can get all entangled again, right in it. So that's part of that. Guarding your heart is you, you. You do not get entangled again because you've got to go to your heart. Because your heart, listen, your heart is where the issues of life spring forth.
Yeah.
And so. So you have to guard it because it is precious. And that's what God has wants to use that out of the abundance of your heart, of what he's done in you, your mouth will be able to speak.
Yeah. And even the bad stuff, if it's got junk in there, your mouth's going to speak. It Bad your heart. I have to think of it like this. My heart's a garden.
It is a garden.
Soil. It's soil.
Yeah. You have to. And you have to be careful what's placed in your heart. You've got to be careful who you let even speak into your life because.
It'S going to produce. Your heart will produce whatever's dropped in.
It's been dropped in. So you have to watch with your eye gate what you listen. Do you know that prophetic people, if they watch certain kinds of movies, Prophetic is everybody but prophetic people, it is going to so clutter their eye gaze. Right. They will then speak prophecy to speak from what they have.
Wow. Why not?
So isn't that even more of a challenge? We got to guard our heart. We got to protect what, what we see. We've got to protect who we talk to. We've got to protect and guard our heart. And there was something that you said with guarding it. It's like even. What was it you said? Your relationships, your eye gaze, your ear.
Gates, what you want, where you go and that. And a lot of people say, well, that's religious. You sound so religious. You're not going to go watch that and you're not going to listen to that and you're not going to, you know, go hang out to this. It's not religious. It's that I love my life so much.
Exactly. And listen, you love your life so much and you know that whatever you taking in, okay, it is going to either produce joy and peace or torment. Right. And you'll be tormented by what you take in so many times. I mean, you've got to guard your heart. And I have noticed now some people, let me say this can go into a crowd and even if it's the wrong crowd, it's the wrong place. Like, let's say go to a concert and everybody's got it going, you know, and they come out and it's just all attached, not just to the heart, but they smell like it, you know, and you take on, you take it on. So you've got to be aware that everywhere you go is going to affect your heart. Everywhere you go, because every living being, person that you encounter, you will draw from that.
And I know it personally from my life. You know, I ended up at your house in 2013, and when I was going through healing and having to decipher all those things that were in my heart, I had to take them out and put them on the table and look at them and say, okay, how did this get in my life? How did my life start producing these things, all these issues, and when I started dissecting them, and it's almost like aa, the AA program. It really is people, places and things.
Yes, it is.
It's our attachment to people, to places and to things. And so I had to turn around and had to be very careful about people, places and things, because once it was. Once my house was washed clean, I had to replace it with good things. So it was almost like being in ICU after having a very serious surgery. Only certain people can come in.
Exactly.
Only certain amount of time you can give to a visitor.
Exactly.
You have to eat the right things to get healthy again. It's so true how it parallels and. And so. So many people laugh at you and say, well, you know, you're being religious, you're being stupid. It don't take all that I've seen in my own life, 100% that. It takes all that.
It takes all of that. And now look at where you are. You. You know, right now where you are, where your heart is. And it has the work. But isn't it worth it?
Yes, absolutely. And once you taste it and see, you won't go back to. You won't go back. You really won't. Once you taste what real, genuine the life of God looks like and tastes like and feels like and the peace of God is, you will not go back. You'll guard it above all else. Once you taste it and see, you're like, oh, no, no, no, no, can't do that. Can't go there.
Can't go there. No, can't go there. And it was all out. Above all else. It becomes such an important part of your daily walk.
It does.
Daily walk. And. Yeah. And. And you. And you know what, though? The more you're healed, you can say no to all those things.
Oh, yeah. You don't even desire it.
No. But what people think if they invite you to a movie and you say no, I'm not going to take that in to, you know, no. And you don't even. It doesn't even bother you to say no. And. And even worry about how they're going to respond to you. And, you know, and that goes back to what I said. You can't. You will no longer allow other people's issues to define you.
You don't. Because it just rolls off of you.
It rolls right off. Because you're, you know what it. Yeah, you're going. Your heart. You're not going to allow what they Say, or what they think to shift you in any way.
So, Pastor Denise, I'm going to ask you a hard question.
Okay.
What about in marriage, within the covenant, and you are married to a toxic person. You know, because we get these questions all the time in ministry. I mean, what do I do if I'm married to this person? I'm in covenant. I don't want to get a divorce, but this person is like poison to me. Me. How do you guard your heart like that?
Okay, well, well, well, well.
It is a hard one. And there's no real, like, clear cut. I know there's no real clear cut, like X, Y, Z, but I mean, just to stay sane for somebody who's trying to believe for their marriage, but they're really married to a toxic person who, who wants to destroy them, who on purpose tries to say ugly things or is mean or what, do what?
Well, you have to literally get into the river of God to get just so submerged in the river of God, the love of God. You get so submerged in his. His love until you're full and then you come out. And then when you encounter that person, say, then you. It becomes a shield to you because you know God's love for you, you know who you are, but you know God's love for you. And so then you see that person with compassion. You see a difference because you're like, I know, Father, forgive them. They know not what they do.
And you do. You. You can recognize brokenness.
You brought. Yeah, you just recognize that you know what it is. You don't let it define you. Yeah, you don't. And so, and, and doing that, you know, it's, it's hard. I know it's hard, but it is possible. I have walked with people through that. And you know what? By, by not reacting when the, when the ugly person says things, if you don't react, if you're not playing ball rhythm, they'll stop throwing the ball. Okay. So if you're not throwing it back, then you have to throw it. And then it becomes. They sit back and like, oh, wow, something's different here. Yeah, it does get their attention. It really does. Because they were doing it to get something from you.
A reaction.
Huh? If it doesn't work in. Okay, yeah, it doesn't work anymore. They're. Yeah, they're trying to get some kind of a reaction to satisfy something in them. So if you just know it's their brokenness, if you know what. Where it's coming from, then you just don't let it Affect you.
Yeah. And it's also. I've learned, even in my own life, it's been a teacher to me. It shows me if that's coming, whether it. I mean, it could be a spouse, it could be a friend, it could be a parent, it could be anybody. It could be a church member. But if it's coming, it's almost a teacher. Because it does show you what's in there. It'll show you your own heart.
And showed you. Listen, I just had a situation. It does show you.
Does.
Yeah. And if you see it that way, then you're not walking around all the time pointing to them. You're like, okay, Lord.
Yep.
I'm. Yeah.
That old song. It's me. It's me, oh, Lord, standing in the needle. It's me.
God, I got a problem. I. I need. I need some more healing right there. I thought I was healed right there, but I let that hurt me.
Yeah.
And I even snap back off. Snap Daddy or her.
Yeah. And.
Okay, well, I. You know, I realize now I need a little more healing, so. Again, though, guarding your heart in that situation is spending time with God. His love for you is what guards your heart. Defines your heart.
Yeah.
Okay. His love defines you, not what they're saying, not what they're doing. His love for you.
Yeah.
And so what you said about being.
In the river, that is so true. That is so true. Is that when you're so enveloped in the love of God, you can rise. You rise above it. You can rise up above it.
Okay, listen, I love this. I was just writing about it. I'm writing a new book on the river of God. And in Essential 47, it talks about some places, it's only ankle deep. Some needy, I'm low in D. But then the. When it is. When you get to the point where it's a full river, okay, it says you won't cross over it. You won't go anywhere else looking. Okay. For the love of God, you are immersed all the way in it. And you know what? When it. And then it's. It's deep enough to swim, that means your feet are on the ground anymore. It's lifting.
You're floating. You're just floating. The water has to be deep enough so you can actually float.
Love in it. And I'm telling you what. And then it carries you.
It does.
So it's like things that happen over here don't even affect you because you're moved by the river of God and you're covered and you're protected and you just.
Yeah.
That is quite your heart.

The goal of guarding our heart is so that our life will produce the life of God. Not, not, not our problems, not our pain, not bitterness, not unforgiveness. We have got to do a heart check. I love so much what you talk about in your teaching and healing the heart that, that don't let the sun go down on your wrath. Such a principle of every day doing a heart check in because if you get it early, yes, it's easy to.
Pluck up every day. I used to say with my kids that I would garden their heart every day as I would tuck them to bed. I would even say, did anybody hurt your feelings today? Did mom hurt your feelings today? Did dad hurt your feelings? Did I hurt you today? And so, and if they said uh huh, then you're plucking that up before it becomes a great big old tree and you have to get a backhoe and dig it up.
Yeah, yeah.
Little fingers. It's just like a little tiny thing. So that's good with children, but even with. With marriage.
Yeah.
Guard your heart every day before you go to bed at night. Okay. Talk through things. You know, when you said that, that.
That really.
That really affected me. And. Can we talk about it? So, Jen, just talk about it to get it out and release it. Don't go to sleep because when. Listen, what if you let the sun go down?
It's going to grow.
You go, yeah. It gets planted in and it will spring forth later.
So, you know, kids don't even have the. The bandwidth to process pain. Children don't. We don't know what to do. As a kid, you don't know what to do with it. So it takes a mature parent to understand this concept, to be able to know that I've got to ask these questions so that I can get into their heart.
Exactly.
How.
Yeah. Just say, well, well, you know, how did it feel today when you got a. A C on your. You know, your. Well, it didn't feel good. You know, let them. Let them talk about it and release it. Okay. If someone beat them up? If someone said on them. If someone, you know, they need to release it and listen, we did this with our grandson last night.
Wow.
Last night we went and. And sat down with him and we said, did it make you angry? And he. I mean, you would have thought, oh, my goodness, he's with. You know, because someone had heard it.
Yeah. Almost ashamed to even say it. But you got to create that safe place for us, for somebody to be honest.
Well, exactly. And I said, it's okay to say it hurt you and it made you angry because it was wrong. What they did to you was wrong.
Yeah.
And so anyway, you have to. You have to create a safe place for your children.
Yeah.
And you need to learn to be a safe place in marriage.
Absolutely. You know, that's so good, Pastor Denise, because, you know, in marriage, we've been married 33 years. Y' all been married how many years?
43.
43. Yes. So you would think by now that we would have learned how to do this thing, but we're always learning. We're always growing. But nobody tells you that you have to have a specific time to sit down and be honest, because most of the time we just stuff it down when we get our feelings hurt and go, oh, I shouldn't be so sensitive, or, oh, I'll get over it. Or like you say in your teaching, we press the minimize button, although it was very real and it. And it hurt.
It hurt. But if you push that minimize button because you don't want backlash if you talk to them. Right. So you'll push that button, but that's pushing it down.
Yeah.
And so.
But it's not doing away with it.
No. It just piles up, and then when it comes out, it springs out real fast.
Yeah. And real loud. Yeah.
That's what happened. And you just, like, upload everything, so. Yeah. But think about it. If we could do this every day.
Yeah.
Just cleanse our heart every day.
That's why journaling is so good. You know, sometimes you don't even have a spouse or a healthy relationship to even talk to to ventilate our heart. But, you know, every day, at the end of the day, just journaling. God, I give you this. Lord, I know this hurt me today, Lord. Lord, I don't like this in my heart. I don't like how this made me feel. Lord, my reaction was terrible. I give to you today, and, God, I thank you that your mercies are new tomorrow. Tomorrow's a new day. And, you know, everybody who. Who's listening to us today, please don't think that we feel like we've mastered this. We're just. We're on the journey of learning ourselves.
But you're learning ourselves.
We are. We are learning ourselves. And we're trying to help you manage emotions, manage pain, deal with it. So that, you know, everybody listening today wants a great life. There's nobody listening who would say, oh, I just want a terrible life and a terrible marriage. We all want a great life, but there are some things that we need to employ in our life to help. Exactly.
Yes.
And we've really got to steward our relationships and steward our heart and steward what we look at and what we listen to and what we put inside of us. Because what we put on the inside is going to produce every single time.
Yes, it will. It will produce every single time.
Listen, if you want to know more about this, Pastor Denise and her husband Lee have a ministry called Living Waters Ministry. And it's in a little. Little bitty country town in North Carolina called Hidden Night. And it's. It is so special to me because God just hid that little place for you to go, a safe place to go to get healing. It's livingwatersministry Dot. And they have retreats every month. And she goes to places you can get her itinerary on there. She does Esther retreats, marriage retreats, Healing the heart retreats, men retreats.
Yes.
And she's given her life to help people sort out their pain and to get their heart healed so that they can be everything that God's called them to be. And Pastor Denise, we love you and all the ministry that you've done your whole life, and we appreciate all you do for redemption for Ron and Hope and our family. And I wish you would just pray for the people listening. Just a quick prayer, just something that, you know, if there's somebody listening who's saying, I hear all this, but I feel so that I've been through so much that I'm just numb, that my heart I can barely even feel. Just pray that the Holy Spirit would penetrate them, that today would be the beginning of healing.
Yes. Yes. Well, Father, in the name of Jesus, right now, Father God, we. We ask that everyone under the sound of our voice that has heard the message and heard us talking, Father, that it's brought hope.
Yes, hope.
You know, that there is a way to get healing for their heart, and then with their healing, they will be able to. To guard their heart and not get back into that pain again. That they will have a safe place. And that safe place is in the river of God, your love that will just protect them and guard them. And, Lord, that they won't be searching for love anywhere else but in you. And so, Lord, I pray for healing. I pray for Hope to rise up as they raise these truths. And we ask it in Jesus name, Jesus name.
Thank you so much for being here today, Ron and Hope unfiltered until next time. God bless you.
