Ron + Hope: Unfiltered - I’m Tired of Living Bound

A Ron & Hope Unfiltered YouTube episode (Dec 29, 2022) in which Ron and Hope Carpenter discuss spiritual freedom, focusing on three related but distinct problems: generational curses (bloodline iniquities passed across generations), yokes (traumas/abusive experiences that bind a person), and strongholds (fortresses of thought in the mind that believe lies and resist God’s truth). Ron emphasizes the church’s current lack of spiritual dynamics (anointing, gifts, casting out demons), describes how each problem operates and gives examples (addiction, poverty, sickness, abuse, political/ideological rigidity). Remedies presented include repentance, revealing truth, the power of the Holy Spirit/the anointing to destroy yokes, and a process of renewal (replacement of lies with God’s Word) to pull down strongholds. The overall exhortation is toward intentional pursuit of freedom in Christ.

Hey everybody, it's Ron and Hope Unfiltered. Real, raw, relevant. Ronald, you do it. Ron and Hope.
Ron and Hope Unfiltered. It's real, raw and relevant.
I see it because we are reveal.
Cup right this time.
Raw and relevant.
Don't start cutting up, cuz. This is a serious one.
I'm not cutting up.
You know, I know you. You try to make it silly.
Oh my goodness, you're trying to make it silly. You the one who's always silly.
I told you before we came, I said this one needs to be serious.
Oh, okay.
Anyway, what are we talking about? See if you can remember.
Curses, yokes, strongholds.
Yes.
Oh, this one is heavy.
So this is the week after Christmas and this might seem like a weird time. You say, man, I really want to be light hearted, I don't want to go heavy. But we do many different things now. And the many different things we do, we reach many different audiences. So lately on I church and at both of our campuses, we've been in hidden in plain sight. If I can take one minute and just explain that Hidden in plain sight is a peering into the spirit realm. I'm frustrated with preachers and leaders around America and the way the church has become so absent of spiritual dynamics. The absence of the gifts of the spirit, the absence of the Holy Spirit, the absence of anointing, the absence of power. I don't know how you teach purpose and destiny and leave the Holy Spirit out of the equation when he's the only person that knows what your destiny is. I totally don't understand. So this is not a 20, 22, 23 church fad. I just don't know how you take the third person of God and just eliminate him from the journey.
Yeah. To be convenient and socially acceptable in.
Your churches, there are things that are supposed to take place in the spirit that make church not pretty.
Hold on.
Church. Maybe you sneezed on the set.
It's real.
Bless you. Oh, that comes in real and raw. Oh, he's being real. Wrong. There's anything in your hand we need to wipe off.
If there is, that's real, put it on that trail.
That's my life.
There you go.
That's my life right there. So what I'm saying, the church, no.
Holy Spirit, no manifestation.
There's things that are supposed to happen in church. You know, we got churches today that the church would crumble if somebody cast out a devil.
Oh, they'd freak out.
I mean, the church would probably cease to exist if somebody demon possessed came in and a devil had to be cast out. You gotta understand, I grew up where that's commonplace.
Right.
Okay. And I saw it happen. And that's, that's nowhere to be heard of. You know, the churches are not even built with altar space. The chairs go right up to. To the stage. There's nowhere. If you wanted to lay hands on people, there's nowhere for them to come to get hands laid on them. I'm a.
Do you think people just think they don't need it?
I don't know. It's a big concern to me. And the fact that our churches are bigger than ever tells me we have a very polished model of Christianity that we're presenting to people. But the fact that our culture is in moral decay on a quicker level than a quicker speed than it has ever been. History tells me we are not impacting that we're not impacting our culture with kingdom dynamics. And so that is a guy.
We're more focused on quantity, numbers.
A guy who's been doing it a while now, that's me. This is a trend that I do not think is a good one. There's a lot of new trends I have embraced and I've put a lot of them to work in my ministry because they were things that were better than I was using. But when you start messing with Bible stuff and removing it from what you do, I have a real problem with that. All the rest is wrapping paper. I'll change any of that. But the core belief of the word of God and what God wants to happen in the earth is the wine. That is not up to my discretion.
Yeah, the Bible talks about the commandment of God and the wine skin.
And the reason there is no wine, because there is no wine skin been built to hold it.
They won't allow it.
How are you going to have laying on of hands if there's no place for people to even come stand? I mean, you know, and that's a non negotiable. No.
The Bible says sick among you to call on the elders of the church.
It's not a suggestion.
Anoint them with oil and the prayer of faith will make you whole.
The Bible says you don't even know that the kingdom has come upon you until you cast out demons. There's people preaching the kingdom that's never cast out a devil. And Jesus said when you cast out demons, that's when you know the kingdom has come upon you. I mean when two kingdoms can come in conflict and the kingdom of God, you know, the kingdom of God Break the power of darkness. That's how you know. Because the kingdom suffers violence and the violent take it by force. So here again, I didn't come into a church bashing podcast, but there are some disturbing trends that I do not think is healthy. Having said that, I got so tired of Hollywood entertainment, movie making and everybody talking about the spirit realm all the.
Time and all these spooky movies.
Yeah. And then they get it wrong because their entrance into the spirit realm is not Bible based. And so they get it wrong. People are taught wrong. So we got everybody else in this search for something beyond ourself and the church is just absent. And it grieves me. It really grieves me.
Well, you've been doing a great job teaching on it.
Are you making fun of me? Are you making fun of me?
No. It's been powerful.
Hidden in plain sight was me saying, you know what, we're going to talk about this stuff. Let the chips fall where they may. Really don't care if people like it or get mad or not. We're going to talk about.
Our church has actually been growing.
The church has grown and the hunger has increased and the response at times has been overwhelming, the way people have been responding to this.
But so many people think that if you preach like this and you talk.
About this, going to run everybody off.
Yeah, nobody will come or you're going to run off the new believers or it'll scare them.
And I think the Gen Z's that are coming around have seen about all the lights and smoke that they care to see. And I hear that they're in a search for true, authentic power of God again. And so I think churches that already are used to this expression will be sitting pretty for a generation that's hungry to see that again. Having said that, there were three topics that I talked about in the Bible that can be very unsettling, but we need to talk about it. I talked about generational curses. I talked about yokes of bondage. Then I talked about strongholds. They are very different. But sometime in preaching I kind of hear we throw them in a pot like soup. And so people know that a stronghold is bad and they know that a curse is bad and they know that a yoke is bad.
But what are they?
They haven't defined what they are. And how can they be eliminated from your life? Now I know we're running up near 10 minutes. Stern, we'll go ahead and start this thing. Generational curses. Generational curses are bloodline sins. When the enemy comes against you. He don't want you, he wants your whole house. He wants everything. He wants everything in your loins. He wants everything in your bloodline. He wants generations. Because God thinks generationally. So does the enemy. Having said that many times, there is an action or a happening in one generation that if it is not confronted, repented of and dealt with, it's repeated, it evolves and grows and the next generation deals with it on a multiplied scale. The Bible says that the iniquity of the fathers in Exodus 20 can pass to the sons, to the third and the fourth, third and four generations deep. So in other words, there's something that somebody that was a great great that may have initiated perverted or twisted in his lifestyle. And then all of a sudden I wake up with some kind of weird twist and desire that I'm fighting to do.
And you don't know why.
You think you're crazy, you think you're mad, and why am I dealing with this? And because you don't know what it is. And number two, you don't know the remedy. What do you do? I call it hide. So.
And it gets worse.
I gotta go to church. Yep. Cause what's unconfronted grows.
Yeah.
So you go to church, learn how to blend in for 90 minutes or however long your church service is. But when you go home, you're fighting.
Something, never getting free.
You're fighting it. You don't like what you're doing, so you're going home and you're pulling up all this perverted porn in the middle of the night. You don't like it while you're pulling it up. You don't like it while you're doing it. And you don't like it when you get through, but you don't know how to stop. But all you know is you can't let your wife see you do it.
And nobody talks about it and nobody talks about it.
So in other words, you think you're.
The only bad one.
It becomes the secret. And then you deal with the condemnation that I am living a life of hypocrisy. I ascribe to the faith, I ascribe to the holiness that comes with it. But yet I know my private life does not reflect it.
So the bloodline sins, I mean, you don't just get your father's blue eyes and your mama's curly hair. You get those physical traits, but you also get iniquity, which is the traits on the inside.
Iniquity is what the Bible talks, is the word to use. Help me. The Word used to describe the bloodline sins, the word iniquity, sweet pea, is not sin. Sin is an act that can be eliminated by repentance and by the washing of the blood, by the grace of God. Iniquity, the actual word means to be bent or to be twisted. To be bent or to be twisted. What does that mean? That means that baby in the birthing room laying on the birthing table has never read a book, never seen porn, never been on a phone, never. Never had a chance to do anything or meet anybody. Nothing has happened to it. But it is already bent towards certain sins, towards certain lifestyles, towards certain areas of brokenness. Yeah.
It's already impatient, just like its dad was impatient. It already has anger issues, just like the. Whatever.
It's already in there.
Yeah.
So bent or twisted, in other words. And that happened in the natural birth.
Yeah.
I think it's important to add in here. Why is it that Jesus had the act that first introduces us to him as being called being born again. Again.
Yes.
And I've said that because the natural birth twists you. But when you're born again, it will begin to untwist the thing that life.
Is twisting so good.
So it's another birth that will correct what the first birth mixed up. Now, having said that, Generational curches.
There's our word. Generational curches.
I can't even say nothing. I was on such a roll.
Generational curches.
And I was being so serious.
I had to stop you, though, because it was a great one. Generational. Put it up there. Curches. I spell it C U R C H E S. No.
C U R T. No, Church.
You said curches, right? All right, let's stop right here anyway and shout out to our sponsors.
Who's calling me?
Your daughter.
Yep.

We were talking about generational curses, addictions. Most times I say are generational curses. Divorce in a family, the inability to sustain long term relationships, poverty. You got people broken by it and don't know why, and may have even said, you know what? I've had people look at me and say, man, we were in love. I don't even really know why we got divorced. But it was something they can't see. They can't see it. They can't see it.
And that would be like just a giving up spirit. I want to do what I want to do. That's what your daddy did. You saw him walk in, you saw him leave. Not be faithful. And so that's what you do. It's a generational curse.
I think unfaithfulness can be a generational curse. It becomes a norm inside of a bloodline to be unfaithful to the covenants that you've made. I believe poverty is a curse. I don't want to get into all that. I don't want to get into the systems of man, capitalism, socialism. I don't want to get into all that. All I know is everything is a mindset. I do know that. It's a mindset of investment to those that are wealthy. It's a mindset of spin to those that are always in lack. These are mindsets and those mindsets have to be broken because poverty is not an income issue. Poverty is a mindset. And so it can be generational poverty. That's in all you say. What am I trying to do? I'm just trying to very quickly, because I preached on this for weeks, I'm giving you eight minutes of each subject. The fact is, you've got to track are these things going on in your family. And you've got to understand that in Jesus Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit, there is the power to break any cycle in your life that is here to sabotage your purpose and your destiny in God. But these are just some of the things that you would need to look in. Generational sickness is a huge one.
It's true.
Generational sickness.
Your back problems, your daddy had a back problem, your granddaddy had a back problem. And you just think it's normal. Somebody's got to draw a line in the sand and say no more. This will not plague me and my family.
Exactly right. And you know, like me, you know how healthy I try. I have a horrendous schedule, but you know how healthy I try to live, but yet went in several times with blood pressure sky high, getting on medicine, this and that and other, and I'm like, I don't know no more. I could do to try to live healthy.
And then what do they tell you? It's hereditary.
It's hereditary. And they start asking me questions about my father. And the fact is, I started asking questions about my father and found out at the same time in life, I was experiencing it. My daddy was hospitalized for it. Generational, those things have to be broken, and they can be broken. And I want to give you the hope and the courage to confront these things and know that God can break them. Number two yokes. Now, secular world talks about nature and nurture. So does the Bible. A generational curse is nature. A generational curse is not anything that happened to you. It's not anything you've experienced. It's something that was passed to you that you didn't even ask for. So those things come naturally to you. Now, yokes, totally different. Rape, abuse, molestation, words spoken over you by those in authority. You know, perversions exposed to things like pornography, twistedness. These are things. A yoke was what they would take to help them get the ox to be a obedient, obedient and help them to plow the fields. They were the plow. They were oxen that plowed fields. The oxen, I've always said, is control. It's a mighty beast. And they knew that once an ox was full grown, there was no Way to control it. So they would yoke it early, early in its age. So that as it grew up, the only thing that it knew was the yoke obey. So even though it had the power to break it. That's a sermon. It didn't know anything, but that was its mindset.
And the enemy does the same thing to us.
So. Exactly. You. When we're young, you get this. You know, so and so molested me when I was 8 years old. And you see this person, 43, and their life is a train wreck.
Yeah. Because they're still yoked.
Because they're yoked. You got people who don't understand that you can be unequally yoked to unbelievers because you have a surrounding around you where you yoke to them and you can't make any decisions outside of their approval because you're yoked to them. You understand that you're yoked to people you have sex with.
Yeah.
You understand another thing. You're yoked to situations and abuses that have happened to you. You had a very unfortunate rape at a very early age. Hope. That chased you till you were 45.
Yeah, it happened at 15.
Chased you till you were 45 years old. You told me all the time I thought I was crazy. I didn't know what I was fighting. I watched you struggle, and it was very difficult for somebody who loved you like I did to watch you deteriorate right in front of me. But you've told me you had no idea what you were fighting. That's why I called it hidden in plain sight. You're swinging at something, but you can't hardly defeat your enemy.
That's when I told you. At 43 years old, I sat my parents down and said, somebody's going to talk to me. Y' all are going to stop the no talk rule. We're going to talk about.
Because I'm dealing with stuff.
Who you were as a teenager, what you did, your hidden sins, what happened in your marriage, what happened with my grandpa, what happened with my grandma, what happened in their marriage. I need to know why I'm struggling and fighting on such a tremendous level when y' all just placated and acted like everything was fine. Everybody's good, but everybody wasn't good.
You just weren't told. A mess. Everybody was a mess.
You just weren't talking.
And without revealing what those issues were, the fact is, when they talked to you, did that help you understand?
I was like, why? Why are we just hearing this? Why are we just hearing this?
And Your brother struggled greatly.
Yes.
Out of. Out of the secrets that were not talked about, that were struggles in the family. And so you're sitting there saying, why do I feel this way?
But guess what? Once the truth came out, the truth is what makes you free. We got free when truth was revealed, when the darkness. When the light came on and the darkness shattered.
And the truth shall make you free. The son makes you free. So the son frees you spiritually. Then you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Then you shall have knowledge. You shall know the truth. So in other words, there's another level of freedom. Not just my spirit, but in my soulish realm, my mind. I have to be freed. So the Bible says the anointing destroys the yoke and removes the burden. Preachers, if there's any on you, any out there listening to me, how are you going to destroy the yoke and remove the burden if you don't even recognize that there's an anointing? Your worship songs don't remove the burden and break the yoke. Your preaching don't remove your coffee stand outside don't destroy the yoke and remove the burden. So you got people coming in and enjoying 90 minutes of a. A show that you put together, but they leave the exact same way they came in. And over time will grow worse. And those are the things that I really don't understand. And right now I'm 54.
Well, maybe they don't even have the knowledge of it. Maybe they don't.
But there's people who function in it that they could seek out. And what they've got to know is just ignoring and pretending it is not there. You're not helping that flock. You're hurting that flock. Because they need the anointing to destroy the yokes, remove the burden, and it's the only thing that does. Talent doesn't do it. Gifts don't do it. Services don't do it. The anointing destroys it. So we've talked about generational curses, Nature. We've talked about.
No, we've talked about generational kerchief, and.
Then we've talked about yokes, which are nurture. Stronghold's a whole different animal. Yeah, strongholds. When you talk about demons, demons are cast out. Strongholds are pulled down.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Demons are immediate. Strongholds are a part of a process of renewal.
Yes. And that takes time. Time, time.
So the Bible says that the weapons of our warfare are mighty in God for the pulling down of strongholds. Arguments for every high Thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, ready to take every thought into captivity and that we can be ready to punish every act of disobedience once our obedience is complete. I just preached on this not too long ago, so let me hit this. Strongholds are now between your ears.
What does that mean, between your ears?
Stronghold is when you believe a lie.
To be the truth to be true.
Do we have any other advertisements? Yes, I think we got one more. We might better do that now before I get started.
All right, let's do it. Before we get started. Do you eat because you're bored? Have you ever eaten because you're bored or you just can't pass up food because it's free or.
Free?
Yeah, like at a buffet. You know a buffet, you pay 5, you've got a lot of it, or you're at a family meal and it's everywhere. Food is everywhere. Do you eat just because it's there? But what about this? Just because it's the time of day you're supposed to eat. Not even hungry, but you just eat because it's lunchtime. If the answer is yes, don't stress. Noom Weight can help you break the cycles and change your habits for the good. Noom has a totally different approach in weight loss, and it personally has helped me. It is psychology driven, helps recognize your triggers. I mean, my trigger would be when I'm on a date with you and I'm out at this wonderful restaurant, you do. You feed me good. And it makes me want to just eat. And it also makes me want to eat dessert. I never eat dessert at home, but when we're in a restaurant, I tend to want to try dessert.
Well, they're extravagant in their desserts.
Nobody's so pretty. It's just a totally different approach, though. It's psychology driven, helps you recognize your triggers, also provides coaching and also daily lessons. I love it. They say that losing weight starts with your brain, not with what you put in your mouth with your brain. And Noom has taught me so many new ways to build healthier routines in my everyday life, which has helped me with getting closer to my health goals. Can you tell a difference?
A big difference. I told you today.

Thank you so much, guys.
Thank you so much. Trying to finish up here in these last few minutes with strongholds.
Strongholds.
Strongholds are when I believe a lie. I gotta make sure we get this to be true. Strongholds are when I believe a lie to be true. So strongholds are belief systems, thought processes in the mind that contend with God's word. God's word is who you are. God's word is what you can have, and God's word is what you can do. So when I'm up there preaching the word of God and I tell people, God wants to bless you, there are people under the sound of my voice that have come through such hardship.
Yeah.
All they've ever seen is trouble. All they've ever known is trouble. Pain immediately. Pain that immediately the things in their mind begin to contend with the truth.
Fight with the truth.
Yeah. So everything is coming against the knowledge of God. So the knowledge of God is coming in. But there's a wall. It's hitting a wall because the.
Because of what a stronghold is.
Fortresses in the mind.
It's what they've been taught. So what they believe to be true over time.
So one thing I said last week in my message was doors give entrance to evil, but strongholds protect them, strongholds keep them safe. They are fortresses that are built in the mind, belief systems that allow evil to continue its process. So you don't ever receive the blessing because you can't ever believe it. Because what you've been through and what you think contends with it. You got people that are so locked in political ideologies that their political affiliation could do anything. And they don't care.
They don't care.
They don't care what they do. Why? Because that is the fortress in their mind. And they cannot think outside of it.
I'm a Democrat, period, or I'm a Republican.
And they can't think outside of it.
And I can't think outside of it because this is what I believe to be true.
You can even take the word of God and tell them what the word of God says about all these issues. They don't do. It does not matter. Because their mind and the way they think is contending with the truth of the word of God. It's arguing with it. So I can sit out here and say, God wants to heal you of this disease, but you got somebody on the back row saying, My mama died from that. What's happening? Your experience is contending with the word of God.
What I believe is true, and what God says is not.
Now, that's true. You just triggered something else. There's a difference between fact and truth. And the enemy will use a fact to get you to believe a lie.
God's word is true.
Yeah. So fact is, your great grandmother may have died with that. Okay, that's a fact. But the truth is, you are healed by the stripes of Christ. And we know that lesser authority yields to greater authority. And God has exalted above all things.
His word, his name, and his word.
And the Bible says even his word above his name because your word saves your name. And so when you get the word of God, you have got the highest authority in the universe. And everything else has to kneel that at the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow, every tongue confess. So strongholds are pulled down over time. You don't go to the altar and repent of strongholds. You have to relearn, you have to uproot, and you have to use the principle of replacement. You've got to pull something up, and you got to put something in its place. Hope I had a. We didn't argue. And honestly, we've never really argued. We've disagreed, but me and you have never been one of them couples where we just go at it. Never have. Even in our worst days. But one area where we disagreed right out of the gate is your families were around faith preachers that taught prosperity. I come from a holiness background where lack was a virtue and we didn't clash. But you would say things that.
I would even confront you.
And I would contend with you.
Yeah. I would confront you. You would say things like this. I remember it so specifically. You would say, say we're talking about healing one time, and you said, well, if it's God's will. And I. And I looked at you kind of sideways. I'm like, if it's God's will? I said, why wouldn't it be God's will that we be healed? I said, he took stripes on his back for our healing. So did he take them for certain people and other people? He didn't. And that really made you stop and think about your belief system at that time, about healing.
One of my. The last ones for me to overcome was money.
Yeah.
Hope, in the holiness environment, you have this notion that God is almost. He can't wait for you to screw up.
Right.
He's watching. Nobody's.
He's waiting.
Nobody's gotten up and said that he's lurking with this whole list of do's and don'ts. You live every day in this constant fear that at any moment God's going to cut you off. And for me, for God to prosper us financially, I had to go through this deep uprooting and replanting of this foundational belief that God is good, God is not bad. God's not out to get me. God's not trying to find a way to keep me out of heaven. God is good. And I remember.
And his heart for me is good.
I was probably 30, been through Bible school and 10 years of ministry. I was probably 30 years old before I stopped contending in my mind with my God wants to give good gifts to his children.
Period, Period.
No ifs, ands or buts, period. He is a good God. And you know, our own struggles with trying to renew strongholds to understand, coming out of a holiness background, very little of a message of grace to understand that. You know, I used to think, when I'm really good, God loves me more. When I'm really bad, he's really disappointed. And to come to the knowledge that he. He can't love me anymore than he does right now and he can't love me any less. And it has nothing to do with my behavior or conduct, has everything to do with your life. That was a revelation to me. And I had to retrain my mind and get rid of the strongholds.
Yeah, because we're. Because we weren't raised in homes with unconditional love like God's love. We were raised with. I love you. Oh, you've done so well. When you bring home the good grades. Performance, yes, all performance. But when you bring home the bad grades, you're in trouble. That's all we've learned. But God is not like that.
We associate that to God and try to operate out of that same model. And it's just not. It's not the way God functions in his relationship with us.
He's just good, period, all the time.
And the last thing I'll say as our time's getting away from me is, you know, a stronghold. Do you ever get rid of all of them or. I think it's a process.
I think it's a lifelong process.
I think it's a lifelong upward.
It's that upward call. I press.
I press toward the upward call of.
Jesus, forgetting those things that are behind me.
I forget the things that I need to get out of my head. And I press and I press. I Think it's a constant life of liberation as God reveals to you who he is and who you are in him.
So the longer you live, the freer you get. The freer you get, the better God is, the better your life gets. So keep living. It's going to get better.
Remember, generational curses can be repented of, can be broken. Okay? Remember, yokes can be destroyed and the burden removed by the anointing. Remember, strongholds or fortresses of thought in the mind that contend with the word of God. And it is going to take intentionality with the word of God for you to uproot the bad and think like God thinks.
We love you guys so much. We want to see you free. That's why we do what we do. That's why we take our time.
Well, we said. We said this is a unique right after the Christmas holidays. But I said, what's the greatest gift we could give people? And I said, freedom.
Freedom.
When I told you that, you said you shook hands like, come on, let's do it.
Yeah.
And so it is for freedom that Christ sets you free. So in this new year, let's continue to press. Can we do that? We love you so much. Hope your holidays have been grand. Hope everything has been great. Tell all the people around you how much you love them. Don't ever quit doing that and prepare for this year that God's going to surpass anything that you've ever known him to do before. All right?
Love you.
God bless you.
