Ron + Hope: Unfiltered - Necessity of An Enemy (Part 2)

This YouTube episode (Ron & Hope: Unfiltered — Necessity of an Enemy, Part 2) is a conversational podcast where Ron and Hope Carpenter mix personal testimony, humor, biblical teaching, and practical encouragement. Ron explains that his book The Necessity of an Enemy (written around 2010) grew from five years of severe personal and ministry hardship; the episode centers on identity and purpose (born-again/regeneration, royal/genetic language, scriptural examples) and on how trials are used to refine and reveal destiny. The hosts include sponsor reads (Fabric by Gerber Life and Chime) and a closing call-to-action to purchase the book (available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc.).

Hey, guys, it's Ron and Hope. Unfiltered. Real raw, relevant.
I was gonna do it. You never let me do commercials.
Oh, my God.
And you never let me open it up.
Go.
Hello.
What?
This is Ron and Hope. Unfiltered. I mean, cough drop. And real raw and relevant.
That's why I don't let you do it.
What's wrong with that? I didn't mess it up.
Okay, well, we are glad that you're here. If this is your first time here, get ready for the comedy show because this one right here has always got something smart to say.
I didn't.
Last time. You said I broke your.
I said you jumped on my back when you was pregnant and didn't warn me in it. And tore my acl.
That's cruel.
My leg folded up under me.
But it's also a lie. It's not true.
It was an MCL I tore then.
No, you didn't tear anything. I didn't jump on your back. Pregnant. Can't even do that. Ron.
Which child you gained much weight with? First, second or third?
The first. I gained 55 pounds with Chase and Chaz and Chandler. I gained 23 each.
55.
55. I was quite the wildebeest.
How? Cause he was eight.
Babe, I had a lot of fluid. I was puffy. You don't know what's gonna happen to your body when you're pregnant.
You had 47 pounds of water.
And all the women are wanting to choke you right now. You're not getting any fans by this.
She have 47 pounds of.
Okay. Anyway.
I needed that.
I wish you could.
I thought you. Baby, I'm gonna tell. You have to birth. Baby. You remember how much I loved you? I thought you the prettiest thing you did pregnant. I did. I showed you off everywhere I went. I did. I remember it. You were pretty. Cause you're so skinny. You're so skinny when I met you. Till you got pregnant. So I'll show you.
Never went back. Never went back.
Just build it. That's the way we build it, don't we? Tell them what I do When I.
Give you pie, give me pie.
Want to eat cake?
My gosh.
Tell them what I say.
No. If somebody offers us sweets or we're at a restaurant or something, he'll go, baby, go on and order it. Just build it.
Build it, build it, build it. That's the time of life we in. Just build it. God, I love it. What we talking about? You always get on here and start being silly.
Well, we are Continuing to talk about the book. The book. The Necessity of an Enemy. Come on.
If you people's first time. You guys didn't hear the last one. It was really. It's really good. It's the first time I pulled this book out.
Stop messing with the book.
In about 10 years, I have it standing. I wrote that in 2010 out of. Out of much pain. If I told you all that was going on, you say y' all making that up. It was. It was rough times. And this book. Let me just say, I'm not going. People who watched the last one. I'm not doing the same thing again. But I just want to highlight why I wrote it. This book, I guess, was me doing a soul cleansing. I was coming on the other side of about five years of devastation and things breaking out, happening in our life that I never, ever would have dreamed would have been a part of our journey. And.
Stop right there. Isn't that the truth for everybody listening?
I think everybody's got things that come.
From left field, and you're like, how did this happen to me? Or I would have never dreamed that my family would have gone. I would have never dreamed that this would happen. Raising kids. I would never dream this would have happened when I had a dream of starting a business. We all have things in life that come against and that stop. That bring pain, that bring tragedy. But that's the plan of the enemy.
Yeah. You don't start a church with plans of people splitting it and lawsuits. And, you know, you don't go to Bible class, you know, thinking that that's a part of your journey. You don't go into marriage thinking about all the pain that you could walk through while everybody's trying to clean out their issues and dig out their flesh and everything out of that. You just don't do it. I never would have dreamed. Never was around, never had in our bloodline. Never would have dreamed I'd had a kid that was for years almost enslaved to drugs.
Yeah.
I mean.
And another one that struggled.
Yeah. That struggled mightily with anxiety and separation anxiety.
And then another one that struggled with drugs.
Yep. And I. And so. And you sit here and like, what in the world?
Yeah.
And I remember getting angry because, you remember I used to say, I didn't sow for this. I didn't, you know, if I was a jerk, if I was a. You know, if I was an absentee father and I just didn't read the.
Bible to them and do Bible study at night.
You were living crazy and doing. I said, I can get that. But a love for the word of God, love for prayer, a respect in the house for holy things and church life and youth. And then all of a sudden, that was the outcome at that time. That's not my harvest, but it was the outcome at that time. Those were rough days, and it's confusing. So that leads me to the book. I wrote the book out of a personal journey to make sense of our fight, because they didn't make sense to me. I was confused by them. And I went in a search, and this book basically is a chronicle of my personal search for reason. Why are these things happening? Why has it been mandated that I walk through these things? Because you know what? Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego. The Three Hebrew children and the fiery furnace. Hebrew children. Three. Three Hebrew children in a fiery furnace. I'm on a roll here.
If you hadn't listened to our podcast before, I always catch him in words that he mispronounces. This is Hebrew.
You got caught. And I gave you great grace.
Yeah. No, you didn't. You called me out.
I gave you great grace. Keep going. It was grace dripping from me. Three Hebrew children, they looked at the king and said, God will deliver us from this furnace, but if he does not, we will never eat your food and we will never bow to your idols. That's powerful.
Yeah, it is.
I will go in here believing God to deliver me, but if he does, it don't change anything. No. And so the fiery furnace, they were not delivered out of it. Jesus got in the furnace with them and walked them through it. So God will either deliver you out of the furnace or he will get in the furnace with you and walk with you through it. This book, he got in it and walked with us through it. This was not a quick delivery. This lasted half a decade. And it was a very, very cruel financial, relational. Friends, marriage, home, kids, love, legal. Terrible season. It was terrible, tough times, and they compounded. And you couldn't put out one fire before 10 others. Seemed like they start. But you wanted to take this one in a little bit different part of the book. A part of the book that I didn't dwell on as much, but it is a part of the book, and that was identity. What are you after? What do you mean when you say that?
Because that is why the enemy comes. That is our fight. Because there is so much more in us. God has designed each one of us with a unique purpose and a plan for our life. And he knows the plan. We don't know the plan. Jeremiah 29:11. He knows the plans he has for us. They're plans to prosper us, to give us hope and a future. They're good plans, not to harm us. Right. We got to know that first. You got to know that they're good plans. Not to harm you, to give you a hope and a future. But the enemy of our soul does not want us to walk out that plan because we live victorious when we walk out the plan. We live in our purpose when we walk out the plan. So that's why he comes. So all of our fight is against our purpose. It's against our identity, who we're called to be.
Jesus. I ended last podcast and we don't try to do a series, but I ended talking about we have no warfare against Jesus till his dead. His dad, his heavenly father, his daddy said word abba. Father means daddy God. But until his heavenly Father said, this is my son. When that identity was given to the Son of man, you know, he. Most people thought he was Joseph's kid, but when it was spoken over him that he was the Son of God, he immediately went into the testing ground. And the testing ground was not coming against his anointing and what he would do. It was coming against who he was. If you are. If you are. If you are the Son of God. So in other words, his test, his resistance was over his identity. Why? Because if you become all you're supposed to become, what have I said for years? You'll do everything you're supposed to do. Everybody takes off in life saying, what am I supposed to do?
Yes.
And God says, those are you, those who received him, those who called on his name. He gave the power to become. Yes, he gave the power to become.
So we need to be pursuing.
So are you becoming?
Yeah.
Are you becoming? I told someone yesterday, they were. That was talking about, you know, what they believe church was and what I believe church was. And I said, you got to understand, my mandate is. Paul said, I labor till Christ be formed in you. In other words, the Jesus Christ that you've accepted, the seed of him now has to be formed on the inside of you. And Paul said, that's where the labor comes in. He said the labor was not getting you saved. No, he said the labor he's becoming.
Looking more like Jesus.
Exactly right. The labor is making this experience become a lifestyle.
Yeah.
Making this transformation take place where your spirit, soul and body have now been given over to the leadership of Christ. Yes. And he said as a. As an apostle. He said that was his Struggle is trying to take this Jesus that you've received and you live him out. So when it comes to identity, do we need to stop a minute and do one of our ads? I know we're right in here. Okay, I'm on. Before I start this next one, we need to go ahead and talk about our sponsors.
Do you want to talk about it?

This is my own illustration as to why they could be so helpful to you. During COVID we have a ministerial fellowship at a certain level. In that fellowship, you have to tithe into our ministry organization. And we took hope. I forgot.
I mean, a lot.
I forgot how many funerals that we paid for. Elderly people that had succumbed, sick people who had succumbed within our minister, family members where we paid for funerals because nobody had any insurance. And it made me actually do a zoom call with my network talking about getting things in order. When you got a company like this as well to help you do that, that's invaluable. So make sure you check fabric out. All right, guys, listen, where was I at?
Identity.
Oh, no. I was about to roll out something good, though. What was it? Ah, help me, Lord. Remember I told you I said we need to go and talk about our sponsors before I roll this out.
I'm sorry.
Your fault. Oh. Who are we? The scope of what happens to us when we say, lord, I ask you into my heart to be my Lord and Savior. Ask you to forgive me of my sins. I believe you died and rose again for my salvation. I accept your gift of salvation today in Jesus name. That's all it takes to be saved. Right there. That's it. Don't tag. Don't tack anymore onto it because that's all it takes to be saved. That's not all it takes to be blessed. That's not all it takes to walk in the kingdom, but that's all it takes to be saved. Okay? And if you're in a church where they tack more things onto that, get out of it, because that becomes religion. This is salvation. It's the gift of God. It's not we earn. It's God's having said that when we get saved. I don't think people go into the born again part. The Bible says in John one that we are a people born not of flesh, not of blood, nor of the will of man, but born of God. The Bible talks about regeneration. That sounds like a theological Bible school word, but it's the Bible. Regeneration. Regeneration. The root word is regened. You have a new genetic code.
Say it again. For the people in the back of.
The car listening, salvation is. I say this a lot, baby, but these are new viewers. Salvation. And Christianity is not a behavior modification class that we come to every Sunday. It is when you have been re gened and you old things have passed away and all things are new. God Almighty.
So good.
Look, if I took you to Genesis 5, Adam and Eve, the first family, as soon as they sinned, murder broke out in their kids. Okay? After the absolute fiasco with Cain running out into the wilderness and becoming a vagabond and Abel being slain by his brother Cain, you got Adam and Eve starting all over. In Genesis 5, it says, and here is the lineage of Adam. Adam bore a son, Seth. Where's Cain and Abel? Your mistakes don't make it into the book because God is starting over with the book. When you get saved, all that stuff is no longer so good in the book. So Cain and Abel's mess was not even listed in Adam's story. It's not a part of his story no more. His story means history. His story. So born of God, that which is born of cow is Cow. That which is born of a dog is a dog. That which is born of carpenter is carpenter. And that which is born of God. And we don't like to say that it's God. Yeah, we don't like to say that. But you have been born of the seed of God. You have been regened. You have godlike characteristics with godlike characteristics regened in his likeness and in his reflection and in his image. Just like Adam, the Adam of Genesis, chapter one. You have been given. That's why blood had to be spilled to purchase your salvation, because the genetic code is in the blood. And so blood was spilled. That bought you a new genetic code. So the things that you keep thinking about and throwing up to God, God longer knows what you're talking about because they're not in your book. They're not in your story. That's your fleshly genetic code. You are now of a royal, royal genetic code. Okay? So you have been born again. The Bible says in James, excuse me, and Romans 8, that we might become the first fruits of his kind of creature. So in other words, when we get saved, we are the first fruits, abundance brought to God. His kind. We're no longer mankind, we're his kind. Yeah, we're the God kind. And for some people, they're like, oh, preacher, now you done crossed the line. Yeah, you crossing the line. Now you're getting too far. Well, I want to know what of these scriptures. You can.
We're lowly. We're lowly humans and nothing good in us. And that's true.
We have been regenerated. Royal blood. And you have been born of the God kind. You have been born of the seed of God. Jesus was God's seed, sown into the earth because God follows his own kingdom laws. You don't get any fruit without sowing and reaping. God sowed heaven's seed into the belly of the earth that he might have many sons. And we didn't come up Christians, we came up sons. And so here again, this is identity. Now, if I am a son of God walking in the earth, where Jesus said, greater works will ye do when I go to the Father, why would the enemy attack my identity? Because if I ever figure out I'm.
A son, what I will do in this earth, my, my, my.
The Bible said, great exploits. Yeah, shall we do in his name?
But we can't hardly make it through next Wednesday.
You know, we're trying to piecemeal two same days together. And so that lets me know there's been some identity Theft somewhere. Because if you know who you are, there's a lot of things that you're putting up with and that you're taking, that you wouldn't put up with, wouldn't take anymore. And so I would ask some people to really, really go into not what is God? There's a lot of talk about purpose today. And I've talked about purpose a ton. My mentor, Dr. Miles Monroe, talked about purpose all the time, wrote books on it. But we talk about purpose which has to do with basically what are we doing with the lifetime we have in life. But purpose always coincides with identity. Identity is who you are, what God's given you, what God put in you. And then when those things are discovered, if you become all you're supposed to become, you'll do all you're supposed to do.
But that's why the enemy comes. That's what we're talking about. The necessity of the enemy to wear you down with battles, with trauma, with pain, with abuse, with divorce, with bankruptcy. All these things to keep your focus off of your purpose and your identity so you never become who you were created to be.
You almost live an alternative life.
Yeah.
Instead of the one you have put here to live.
So to be everything God's called us to be, there's got to be battles. There's got to be.
Let me tell you what God does. God never shows up and calls you what you are. He always shows up and calls you what he's destined you to be. So he shows up. I've got three main analogies I'll give you. He shows up to Simon and says, I tell you, thou art Petra. Thou art Peter. You're a rock. The word Simon meant reed. Shaky, Shaky. The word Petra, rock means immovable. Where's the battle? The battle is not over Simon. The battle is over Petra.
Yeah.
And so when the word is given, ah, there's so much right here. When the prophetic word is spoken over his life that creates movement. And as soon as he starts move, Satan has come to sift you as wheat.
He comes immediately to steal the steal.
The word that was on the inside of you. The Bible says in Mark, chapter four, when the word is sown, Satan comes immediately to steal the word. What is the word? The word is the potential. Whatever word you have into is the potential that you can birth. So it's never about you and where you are. It's always about who you can be and where you are.
So we really need to start embracing the trials. The trials, the battles can consider it Pure joy.
When you go through diverse trials of every kind. For we know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.
Say it again. Consider it pure joy.
And then he goes on to say, and let patience do its perfect work. Perfect work.
Yeah.
Perfect means mature. Perfect doesn't mean you don't have flaws. Perfect means mature Letter. Patience, mature you. Okay, and so you're bringing out some really, really good points here. He shows up to Jacob, which means trick, and that was his character. Tricked his brother out of a birthright for a bowl of beans. I mean, that's a pretty good salesman. And he calls him Israel. The word Israel means Prince Hope. There's a long way from Trick between Trick and Prince. I mean, a long, long way. But what's the battle over? The battle is not over, Trick. No, the battle is over Prince. One of the funniest in the Bible is Gideon is basically what we called as a child, a scaredy cat.
Yeah.
He's hiding behind a wine. He's shaking. When God finds him.
He's hiding and he's shaking.
And God speaks to him and says, get in, thou mighty man of valor. You don't know what's in you. And he speaks. He speaks to him, but where he is, but he doesn't reinforce that. He says, you're really a powerful military leader. He said, you just ain't found that guy yet. And so these battles that you're coming against the enemies that are coming against your life, please understand something with that. They're always trying to come against the next that you're about to birth the potential that you're carrying. Mark 4. You need to study that. You brought that up. I wasn't thinking about that one. Because when the word is sown, what does God do to give you a word to show you your future?
Yeah. It gives you hope.
Yeah. So when God speaks to a trickster and calls him Prince, what does that do? It paints a picture on the inside of him. What is it when he says simon who? Simon became hope. Listen, Simon became whatever crowd he was in. If he was around sinners, he was denying Jesus. If he was around Jesus, he was, I'll go to prison with you, and I'll die with you if I may. Whatever crowd he was in, he became that. That's a reed.
Yeah.
Jesus said, shapeshifter, I'm raising up a guy that will be crucified upside down in my name. I'm raising up a guy who, when I send into heaven, will go to the gate called Beautiful and say, I Don't have silver and gold, but such as I have give I unto thee in the name of Jesus, rise up and walk. And then turn around at the upper room and say, these men are not drunk as you suppose. This is that which was prophesied by the prophet Isaiah that in the last days I will pour out prophet Joel. I will pour out my spirit upon this scaredy cat jumping out of boat, tearing off his clothes, cutting off ears, preached the first sermon After Jesus, 3,000 people got saved and said he did not deserve to be killed like Jesus and was crucified upside down. That's what the seed can do in somebody's life.

Well, we're at the half hour mark and we try not to go much over that. A little bit over it, but not much. What about it? Have we not hit what part about it do. Do our.
Let's talk about Romans 8:28. Because when you're going through trials, tribulations.
Seriously Pentecostal preachers. Trials and tribulations.
And tribulation. Because when you're going through it, and I've said it in my own life, and I've heard it a hundred times by people, how God, how can you get any glory out of this? How God, can this be for my good? How can this help my family? How, God, when we were going through what we were going through, how many times did we look up into heaven with tears streaming down our face and say, why?
Why?
How? How? But God, Romans 8:28. He works all things together.
I think that's the part nobody says about the Scripture, is that he's working.
He's working.
He's not. Just because you're in a bad time does not mean he stopped working.
Right? He's going to use it.
Yeah, he's working.
He don't waste anything in our lives.
Nothing's wasted.
I use the cake analogy. You know, most people don't go and just crack three or four eggs and put them in their mouth. Unless you're a bodybuilder. You don't eat sugar, a whole cup of sugar, just glum, glum, glum. You don't eat a cup of flour. You don't eat a cup of buttermilk or two sticks of butter by itself. But when you put it together, when you take the good, the bad, the ugly, and you just start mixing it together, then you put the heat on. Comes out so beautifully and it tastes so good. It's like our life. It's like our life. None of us are promised a life where we have no pain.
You don't have any trials. You don't have any diamonds without pressure. You don't have any wine without crushing.
No, it's.
It's. It's just the laws of the kingdom. It's the way that the kingdom works. And it's something we've got to understand. I've used this analogy. Hope we only see what's going on. Yeah, but how many times have you heard me preach it in my glory teaching series?
What's going on is not what's going on.
I'M going to tell you, I have to preach that to myself all the time. Yes.
And we're so literal.
We see what she did to me.
You're coming against me. You're hurting my feelings.
And that's what we see. Okay, but there's stuff working.
Yes.
And the Bible says while we do not look at the things we can see. Well, that's what we do all the time. Yeah. We see the chaos. We see who hurt us, we see our offenses. And we're doing exactly the opposite of what God commanded. He said, don't look at that. He said, but looking at what we cannot see. For the things which you can see are temporary. The things which you cannot see are eternal. He said, I'm doing stuff up here that will never change. He said, but what you're going through down there. He said, Monday may be over with. It's always subject to change. So I go. I take that analogy. And I talk about Mary Magdalene goes to the tomb. She sees Jesus clothes laying there and she is tore up. The Bible talks about. Basically she's weeping profusely. What does she see? Jesus is gone.
Jesus is gone.
Jesus is gone. But there's an angel sitting at the head of where he laid and sitting at the feet of where he laid. And the Bible says that Mary is crying, but the angels are not crying. Why? Because they know something she does not know. They are able to peer into the invisible. She cannot see the invisible. And the Bible says that when Jesus was in that tomb, he went into the belly of the earth and took the keys of death, hell and the grave. So victory is being. Victory is being accomplished while she's crying at what she sees.
Yeah, because God's always working.
You're crying over something right now and don't know it. But behind the scenes, victory is being accomplished.
It's producing something.
And what's going on is not what's going on. And you've got to refocus on things you can't see. And I'm not talking down or preaching down to you. These are things I have to remind myself all the time because something happens to me and I'm like God, and I gotta stop.
My worst days have produced some of the most beautiful things in my life. I mean, my absolute worst years have produced something in me that I would have never gotten.
Our light and momentary afflictions.
Yes.
Or working for us. Or working. It's all. He's always working.
Yeah.
What's a song about that? Lately, even though I can't see in Your work never stop.
Never.
You got to understand, he's not just working. When you feel like blessing is breaking, right? God gets blamed on the blessing, and then the enemy gets blamed on the hardship. But the wine always comes from the crushing.
Always.
And the anointing comes from the crushing. So I just want to encourage somebody. God's got you.
Yes, he does.
God's got you.
And your battle could be your best opportunity. It really could.
According to Paul, there's a door on the other side.
There's a great, ineffective door.
And you know what? I didn't talk about this last. Let me end with this. Sometimes, babies, baby doll, there's. There's not enemies that you defeat. There's enemies you just outlast.
Oh, now that will preach.
There's been some enemies. Me and you just had to look at it and say, you know what?
We're going to be faithful.
We'll be standing here after you're done.
Yep, yep. We just going to be faithful, and we gonna outlast you. Some of y' all need to look at your enemy and say, I'm just gonna outlast you. I'm just gonna be stronger.
My character will outlast your criticism. See what I'm talking about?
Won't he do it?
Won't he win? My name will outlast your accusation.
Yes.
And so you have to understand some enemies, you just stand there and stand, therefore, and put on the whole armor of God. You know what I'm talking about? Having done all to. Stand.
Stand.
