Ron + Hope: Unfiltered - Necessity of An Enemy (Part 1)

This YouTube episode (Ron + Hope: Unfiltered) features Ron and Hope Carpenter discussing Ron's book The Necessity of an Enemy. Ron recounts a prolonged FBI investigation and financial/legal hardship that motivated the book and argues that adversaries often indicate doors of promotion (using Biblical examples such as Moses/Pharaoh, David/Goliath, Judas/Jesus). Practical takeaways: doors and adversaries co-occur, pick battles that have spoils, enemies test identity and signal promotion, and some friends can be lethal if aligned with your enemy. The episode contains lighthearted banter and sponsor reads (Noom, stamps.com), and directs listeners to buy the book at major retailers.

Foreign.
Hey, guys, it's Ron and Hope Unfiltered. Real, raw, relevant. We are so glad that you're here today. What you looking at, Ron?
Sounded very canned.
What do you want me to say? Hello?
Do it again. Do it like you was at home and you're mad at me.
Hey, guys, it's rotten. Hope unfiltered.
Be a meanie.
Raw, relevant.
Have we talked about menopause on these things?
Yes, we have, Ron.
I thought we did.
And it's time for my hormones.
Meanie.
Yep.
You were a meanie yesterday morning. Go ahead and confess it to everybody in podcast.
I was.
How long did it last?
About half a day. Ah, unfortunately it did.
When do I get to be a meanie? I want to be a meanie.
Oh, you've been a meanie. I don't rat you.
When have I ever been a meanie?
Oh, okay. You don't want me to have menopause. No, no.
I told you, when you have menopause, I need a pill. Okay, well, I am never a meanie. I'm never mean to you.
You could be a little passive aggressive.
What does that even mean, Ron?
You make little comments, you'll get quiet.
I make comments. I want to make you laugh.
No.
And I send you text.
You get quiet on me and I know.
And I draw pictures and leave them on your desk.
You do.
You do obscene pictures.
It's not pastoral things to do. It's not not. It's not godly. At least I don't do that.
Did you get one yesterday?
Yes. You left one on my desk and it was awful.
But anyway, two staff members walked in and saw it on your desk and thought you'd been doodling.
I know. Anyhow, let's just. Let's move on from here, okay?
No more meanie, though. No more this week. Okay?
This week. No more meaning it's a new week next week.
Right.
I get my hormones tomorrow, though, so that's a great thing.
What did they. They don't even know what that means. What does that.
Yes, go back and listen to our menopause.
But what does that mean? It just gives me energy.
It just gives me smile.
Hormone pill. A hormone. What do you. Yeah, hormone pellets.
Yeah.
What does a pellet.
You know what a pellet does?
What?
I don't even like looking at you right now. What.
What does a pellet do?
It puts hormones in my body that I'm lacking.
That make you sleep and feel better.
I'm lacking testosterone. I'm lacking estrogen. I'm 53 years old.
I don't want no testosterone. You'll grow a beard and turn into a base.
Oh, my gosh. I do have to have some a little bit, yes.
You ever seen women have testosterone? Right. Start growing right there.
You stop that.
And they have to.
Yeah, I tweet.
You don't.
Yes, I do.
Women, you said that's old women's stuff.
No, I have some. Sometime I have to tweeze them out.
And I told you, when it comes to struggle is real, we're not going down like that. Well, sorry, we're not going down like that.
Struggle is real. We all have some little hairs we need.
What are we talking about?
Oh, we are talking about something amazing today. And it is your book. Not just your book, but the whole subject of trials and enemies.
Oh, Lord, we ought to have a million viewers on here like that.
Because we all have issues in life we face that are hard and difficult and nobody wants to deal with it. But you wrote a book, guys, this.
Is a good book. I know.
The Necessity of an enemy.
Let me just talk about this. We don't use our podcast to try to sell stuff, but I don't mind telling you, we got this and Hope picks the topics. Actually, I wrote this in 2010. We released it in 2011. I think at that time I had 9,000 Facebook followers. We had a local church and 9,000 Facebook followers. Not really much of a social media platform or TV presence at all. We just kind of in our area and trying to make a difference. And now I think that number is like over 1.6 million Facebook followers. And I have you and others tell me we might need to do a re release.
Yes.
This is the second best selling message I have ever had and it was the best selling until 2015. Mine World, Mine World surpassed everything. This is the second behind it. This came out of a difficult time. Our ministry was picked by the government to undergo an FBI investigation that lasted three years. And I'm telling you, when I went to Bible school, I just loved Jesus. I just wanted to get out and help some people. And I'm sitting there saying hi in the world. But you know, when you get to a certain status and a certain place of influence within a city, a state or a nation, you just draw a lot of attention. And there's always somebody wanting to find a reason to try to take you out. And baby, you remember, them were tough days. Them were tough days. The legal battles that ensued and just, you know, because nobody, the US government don't like to Go and put a lot of investment in something and not come out with anything.
Right?
Well, they didn't come out with anything. We hadn't done anything. And this was about a community outreach where we were trying to build subdivisions for single moms. And we had done many things like that over the years, but this one, some of the people I brought in from another state to help me lead it were corrupt, did some things, and they tried to bring me into it. And I'm just telling you, this was a bad. It was awful bad day. Bad day. About three years of bad day every day. I mean, I would hear helicopters, and I would, like, stop in the hallway because I'd like somebody coming to take me out. I mean, because it was like they were trying to take me down. And I had never seen anything like that. I'd never been any. I'd never been any trouble in my life. And I wasn't in trouble then. They were trying to catch me in something that I was not a part of. And we cleared of everything, of course, but it took three years and hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees to do it. It wiped us out financially. The stress of it was crushing our home. That was in the days where you were not doing good. And this didn't help. And. And out of that, I. I wrote this book. Yeah, this book didn't come from, you know, I got an idea from somewhere else, or It. This came out of my pain. Yeah.
Yeah.
This. This book right here. You are reading my personal search for why am I walking through this? And what good could God possibly bring in my life? The reason for battles. How you can fight when you know what you're fighting? And why are you in battles where there are no spoils? What battles do you fight? What battles do you not fight?
Are the battles from God?
It's like the battle book. But the fact is, I come out of that whole process with the fact that enemies are necessary. They are a necessary means of promotion. And. And I'll go back and talk about it a little deeper in the podcast, but the fact is, you would have never heard of a Moses if it wasn't for Pharaoh.
That's true.
You would have never heard what. Nobody knew David's name until he killed Goliath.
Right. He was. What was he doing sitting on the backside of a mountain?
I mean, he was tending sheep. He was tending sheep and he wasn't even invited to his daddy's anointing party. I mean, he just. He was just a kid. The Bible says a Rudy Face which means freckle face kid. And all of a sudden, he's being hoisted on the shoulders of the soldiers into the downtown streets of Jerusalem, and they're saying, saul has slain his thousands, David has slain his tens of thousands. And then all of a sudden, that creates another battle with Saul, because Saul is jealous. So the one battle promotes him to a different level, which creates a whole set of battles.
The battle promotes you to a different level of a battle to a different level. But you keep getting stronger and stronger and stronger.
This is not a ministry podcast per se, but we want to minister to you every time. Anything we do, we want to serve you. The word ministry means serve. So what I'm trying to do today without preaching is to just really encourage some people who say, why do I seem like I'm perpetually in a fight? Yeah, you know, I'm just. I'm always in a fight, and it seems like I never get a break from the pressure of ongoing resistance. I. I'm here to tell you that's not a bad sign.
Where's the rainbows and butterflies?
And they're hard to find. Sometimes they're hard to find. So some people's book comes because they have great wisdom and great knowledge. Some people's books, like mine and Hope's, both are written out of great, great pain. And there's something that you get out of somebody's pain that you can't get out of somebody's head.
That's so true.
And so I would love to be able for many of you to get this. So what do you want? You designed the topics, and you were even before we started the podcast. Talk about the enemy of menopause and how you overcome the meaniness of menopause. I'm just kidding. I gotta rag you a little bit. Can I do a cough drop while we're doing this?
This man right here. This man right here.
Don't you love me?
The necessity don't you love me? Of an enemy.
Don't you love me?
I do love you, but sometimes I just take care of you. I take this book and beat you with it. Anyway, before we go into the book, let's just shout out to our sponsor, No, I love noom because I've been fat before. Have you ever been fat? I love. No. Because losing weight can be completely overwhelming, especially when you're in menopause.
When I met you, you weighed, like, 80 pounds.

Everything successful. Baby doll. There's a psychology behind it.
That's true.
Everything and successful. To be successful at losing weight. There's a psychology behind it. And hope you were able to get you remember that time when you were pregnant. You jumped on my back and tore my acl. My whole leg buckled up under me and I tore it up.
What is everybody happening right now? You are lying.
You didn't tell me you were gonna jump on me. You did it and surprise me.
My gosh.
What you looking through the book. Well, I know what I wanna talk about. I got it right here. I done jot it down notes.
I'm gonna get up and leave and let you just.
I done jot it down notes.
I'm just gonna get up and leave.
Don't leave me.
Well, don't be ugly.
Not being ugly. That was funny. It was funny. Tried to up my knee. That wasn't funny.
You know what? You better watch your words because you reap what you say.
Oh yes.
And you go hobbling out of church today with a messed up knee, God's done got you.
Don't jump on my back. I'm not sleeping back alone.
I'm not touching you right now.
Hey, baby.
No.
Come on. We're on you. We're on YouTube.
Nope, not touching you. You better talk about your book.
Have you ever been fighting something and didn't know why? He's fighting it?
Yeah. Right now. You.
You ain't fighting me. You love me. I'm so good to you.
Fighting. You won't bite.
You tell me. They want us to be serious. This is a serious book. This ain't a funny book.
You got me mad. Yes. I have fought things, and I didn't know why I was fighting them. That's when you look up into heaven and you're like, God, how much more God? Why? Those are when you. When you just don't understand what's going on in your life.
When you got understanding, did it help you?
Yes.
Can you talk? Can you tell us about that? I'm interviewing you.
You're interviewing me. When I got understanding, I got one of it.
One of the time.
Most of the time I didn't get understanding until it was over.
Well, about a time where you were fighting internally a war, a war that you really never let. Nobody was going on on the side of you. I saw it, but I didn't know what it was. And. And it wasn't until you went and had a long, very pointed conversation with your parents that you said, the light came on.
Right.
And I don't know if you said.
These exact words, but that was years.
Yeah. I don't know if you said these exact words, but it was when you got information that you needed, all of a sudden your enemy came in focus.
Yes.
A lot of what this book starts off about is when you're fighting and don't know what you're fighting.
You don't know where to punch, you don't know where to swing, you don't know what to do.
There was a series, and I'm talking on Sundays, about yokes, about generational curse and all types of things that can be happening. But there was a time, hope from about 080708 to 2013. It never stopped.
Right.
It. Absolutely.
The squeeze was on.
I mean, it. Absolutely. We couldn't, in the words of secular words, we couldn't catch a break.
Right.
We couldn't catch a break financially, we were being devastated. Relationally, we were being devastated. Our home was being devastated, attacked. Our character in the city was being attacked. Legal battles on every side.
I mean, it something all the time.
And you couldn't get one. You couldn't get one fire put out before seven more had started. And we had a lot of staff problems. And we had a guy that tried to split my church in the time where it was really growing the fastest and having the most fruit. And that was a very hurtful thing because it was a very good friend. And it's just one thing after the other on every side. And as a man of God, I was confused because I was a faith guy. And, you know, faith guys are positive by nature. And I've always believed God's going to do something great. But I did get to a time where I'm like, all right, Lord, I need you to show me what's going on, because your man of faith here is really getting confused. And number two, I'm getting tired. I'm getting tired because nobody can fight. I've always said this for years, all the time, right? There's a season, a time and a season for everything under heaven. There's a time to be at war. There's a time to be at peace. The Bible says that. So when you find yourself fighting all the time, that's not God's ordained order.
That's not God's order, and it drains you. But that is his plot and his plan in his youth to weaken you, to weaken you.
So I want to come up and I want to first talk about these things right here that God uses enemies to promote. Okay, okay, let me go back to the little statements that I made. You wouldn't know Moses without Pharaoh. Pharaoh was God's instrument to promote Moses to a national leader because the Hebrews didn't know him. And the Hebrews that didn't know him didn't respect him. But when they saw how God used him to put to flight Pharaoh and the greatest army on Earth, then all of a sudden, he became great in their eyes. So that was taking a guy who was a fugitive from justice literally on the backside of nowhere for 40 years, running for his life, and took him to a perennial leader that we're still talking about thousands of years later. And God used his enemy to set him up and do that. David. David was an absolute obscurity until Goliath. And it was taking down Goliath that took him to national prominence and had him being marched down the streets of Jerusalem with the Bible said, and maidens were singing songs in his name. This is crazy how one enemy took him from Obscurity to notoriety and won battle. And so my encouragement outside of that would be, whenever you see an enemy, that is your sign. There's a new promotion that is at hand. So in other words, you know, we pray God increase us. God, enlarge our territory. God enlarge our influence. Increase us in favor with God and man. When we say those prayers, a lot of times we don't know what that means.
Yeah, because usually we want it the easy way.
Yes. Expansion usually comes with another hurdle. So that goes right into this First Corinthians, 16:9. I didn't open. I didn't bring my Bible. I think it's 16:9 says there is a great and effective door open. This was Paul talking. He said, but there are many. There are many adversaries. Listen, doors and adversaries go together. You cannot separate doors and adversaries. Doors are access to new places. And Paul said it this way. He said, whenever I see a door, there is usually an adversary standing in front of it. Okay? Our problem is we see the adversaries but don't see the doors.
Right, Right. We get distracted.
We're blinded by the adversaries. And when you're fighting, you got to understand, if I can be faithful in this fight, then there is an access. There is something that I'm going to access that without this resistance, I would not be able to access. That's right.
That's why the resistance is there.
Exactly right.
Because there's a door.
I may need to preach this series again. I'm feeling it now. Feeling it now. So that th. I want somebody to be encouraged because you see what's standing in front of you, but you don't see what it's standing in front of.
That's good. Ron Carpenter. You see, I'm not mad at you anymore.
I'm going to cook for you tonight. I'm going to cook. All right.
No, you're not.
So anyway, I started thinking about your cooking. I lost my track of train of thought that cooking so good. Yeah. Doors and adversaries. You can't separate the two. And so I want to encourage somebody who has just had a new enemy arise in your life.
Oh, my goodness.
There is now a new opportunity that has just arised in your life. And you got to understand that is the biblical protocol of God, because with every next promotion, there's an enemy that has to be overcome. Second thing I want to tell you is the enemy will have you fighting all the time if you want to. And this was one of my mistakes earlier on hope you remember Ron in his late 20s and 30s. I was a fighter.
Yeah.
God almighty.
Just gunslinger.
I mean, I was fighting my denomination.
I was fighting challenging everything.
I was fighting my city. I was fighting other churches and people. I was fighting the racial battle.
Ronald.
I mean, I would just. And I was a fight. And you know what?
What?
That juiced me. I was. But after a while, that gets to not be fun anymore. And so I learned some things about battles. Jesus said in Luke 10, he said, he who does not, before he builds a house, first check and see if he has enough to complete it. Le he be mocked, count. Then he said, he who with his 10,000 will not see if he can go out and beat him. Who has 20,000. He said, in other words, if you can't win, don't fight. So I come to you with this. I've been sesti of the enemy. Learn to pick your battles. There are some heels that at age 32, I was willing to die on. At 54, I'm just not willing to die on them anymore.
We don't even. We're just like, nah.
I looked at you yesterday when we were trying, getting sucked into a battle, and I looked at you and said, not fighting that battle anymore.
Yeah.
There's no spoils in it.
Right.
You only fight battles where there are spoils. I see people fighting all the time, and I look at them say, what do you win if you don't win? Nothing. Don't fight.
Especially if, you know, like, if it's a person or an issue and you've already gone around this mountain 12, 13, 14 times with them. You exhaust yourself. They never change. Then here it comes again. You're like.
And you do.
I'm not doing this anymore.
And I'm going to tell you, I don't think that's a curse. I think that's the blessing of my age.
Yes.
When I turn. When I turned 50, Bishop Jakes told me this many years ago when I was like, 35 and he turned 50. I remember he told me, he said, when you turn 50, you start thinking different. I didn't really know what he meant, but I would say, since I've turned 50, there's just stuff.
It's not worth it.
I'm not going to fool with it. Yeah. And when I was 35, I'd have fought from sun up till sundown. And now I realize, if there's no spoils, don't fight. And then some battles, that hill just ain't worth dying on. And pick your battles here's the battles. I've always tell people say, what battles do you fight and what battles do you not fight? This is Ron's definition. I don't know that. I can show you this. Biblically, this is my philosophy of life. I only fight battles that threaten my destiny. If you're coming against what I'm supposed to be and what I'm supposed to do, I'm going to engage you. But if you want to fight about politics and lose a relationship over, I'm not going to die on that. I'm not dying on that hill. You can die on it. If you want to fight over Twitter, you can die on that hill. I'm not going to die on that hill. I'm not going to be sucked into all that toxicity. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. It's not fruitful, it's not profitable, but it's very draining. It loses friends and it takes a lot of energy. So if I. If I don't have spoils, if I can't win and it doesn't threaten my destiny, I'm not fighting.
Yeah, but I will fight over you.
I've seen you fight over me and.
I will fight over my kids.
You got a mean right hook. I've seen you fight over me.
My head will turn all the way around and green stuff come out my mouth over my. My husband and my kids.
I want a woman to fight for me, though. I will need a good fighter.
I will.
But see, there's a spoil to that.
You want to fight for me?
We fight for each other. And we have fought for each other many times.
Before we finish talking about this book, we have one more sponsor. You gonna talk about it?

Yep. Love it.
It is so amazing.
I love it.
Thank you. Stop.com. absolutely. Absolutely. We've already talked. Closing in on half hour. I want to give this last part to what I believe is I've left this the best for last because I believe this was the most potent chapter of the book and it's where I remember doing the most research and study. I want to talk about Judas.
Ooh.
I'm getting ready to bring some things I'm getting ready to bring some things to Judas that's going to make some people's head turn around. A lot of people think Judas is their enemy. And if I can get Judas out of my life, then my life will be better. But I got a question. If Jesus couldn't get rid of all the Judas wives, come on, Ron. Why would I think I'm going to be able to get rid of all of them? Jesus had a Judas in his inner circle.
Yep, yep, yep.
Not in the crowd, in the inner circle. All the way to the end. They're very hard. It's very hard to filter out all the Judases. And so I want to say this about Judas. Judas. The Bible doesn't say that Judas was Jesus enemy. Here is what is so lethal about Judas. Judas is your friend and the friend of your enemy. That's why he's so lethal. He was the friend of Jesus, kissing him on the cheek, eating the last supper with him. But he was the friend of the people who were trying to kill Jesus and giving him 30 pieces of silver. So he's a friend in my circle and he's a friend in my enemy's Friend.
That's why he's so dangerous.
That's why he's so lethal. Because they befriend the people that hate you.
Come on now.
Okay. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
But the friend of my enemy is my enemy.
You see what I'm talking about? So now watch what happens here. Here's where I'm going to mess your mind all up when it comes to.
You already did.
Listen to this. Jesus looked at Peter who said, never, Lord. Jesus was saying, I'm going to go to Jerusalem. I'm going to suffer many things. I'm going to be crucified. Peter said, never, Lord. I'm willing to die with you and go to prison with you. Whatever I got to do, I'm willing to do it. And Jesus looked at Peter and said, get behind me, Satan. Can you imagine how that devastated Peter, right? He was probably like, look, man, I'm trying to protect you. You sitting here calling me the devil. I'm trying to protect you. But Jesus, though Jesus's the will of God. For Jesus was to die is the cross.
Yeah.
And Peter said, I will stand in the way. And so Jesus called in the devil.
Oh, anything that stands in front of your purpose.
Judas betrayed him into the hands of those who would crucify him. He called him. He said, him his friend.
Oh, Ryan.
He called Judas his friend.
Why? Because he opened the door for purpose.
Judas opened the door for his purpose. Judas opened the door for his potential. And some of the people you think are helping you or hurting you, and some of the people you think are hurting you are helping you. Because after all those things happened to us, never have we had impact, a greater day and a greater day than we're having right now. But during that time, the enemies so covered the doors, I couldn't see the doors, right? And that's when you grow weary. That's when you grow weak. Jesus came to Peter and said, you know, Satan is trying to sift you, but I prayed for you, that you will not fail. And when you have returned, you will strengthen your brothers. You got to understand, he said, peter, there's somebody trying to take you out. But I'm already prophesying your return. That's so good you're going to come back from this. But whenever you feel like something has come in life to take you out, remember, God has already prophesied your comeback before you've ever been taken out.
That's so good.
And another thing I want to let people know is we have no recorded baby dog. This Will be the last nugget. And I'll let you finish out talking. We have no recorded warfare against Jesus for 30 years. It may have happened, but the writer, the gospel writers did not record it. He went 30 years and we have no recorded warfare. At age 30, the heavens opened up. The voice came from heaven, said, this is my son in whom I am well pleased. Bam. Satan said, I got to challenge that. So I could go on here. The enemy of identity. Because until Jesus got his identity, he was never messed with. So if you're being messed with, that's a good indicator you know who you are, or at least your enemy knows who you are.
Well, we're going to talk about that on our next podcast. We are Identity. Yep. So go ahead and finish your thought.
I didn't know that. Yeah. Okay, so listen to this. A lot of times we think our enemy has come against what we're trying to do. Satan came to Jesus in the desert while he's been tempted and said, if you are, if you are the son of God, turn the stones to bread. If you are the son of God, throw yourself down. If you are the son of God, bow down and worship me in all these kingdoms. I will give you if you are, if you are. He was never being resisted and fought for what he was doing. He was being resisted. We are sons and daughters of the most high God. And trouble never comes to test what we do. It comes to test who we are. So if you have an enemy staring in your face, you know what that enemy is saying. Who are you? Who are you? The demon said, Jesus. I know, Paul, I know. But who are you? You need to answer. Those of you who are about to give up, you need to answer. This is who I am. Those of you who are on the edge, you need to answer. Those of you who are depressed and about to throw in the towel, you need to square your shoulders and answer. I am a child of the living.
God and there's so much more in you. And that's why the enemy fights us. He doesn't want us to reach our potential.
He doesn't fight where you are, not where we are. He doesn't fight. He doesn't fight with him.
He doesn't fight this. He fights what we can't see, those doors that we. If he can get us so discouraged that we refuse to open, that we refuse, that we faint right at the door. That's what he wants. He doesn't want us to go through the door.
Satan didn't fight. Son of man for 30 years. But when heaven opened and said, this is the son of God. Oh, oh.
He said, fight on.
Because that was the potential that was in the boy. Jesus.
Yes.
The whole time. So the battle is not over. What is what you have accomplished up until now. Now the battle is over the seed that is still in you, yet unborn. And you've got to understand that. So I just wanted to encourage some people today. This is a small synopsis of everything that's in that Bible. The book. I don't know that that book is. I don't know that it's scholarly, but it's good, though. But if you. If you want some insight that'll help you make it through battles and give you a reason to keep swinging, I think it's a pretty good book because I know. So it came out of a very difficult time for me, and I wrote that book as soon as I came out on the other side.
And you can get this book anywhere, anywhere books are sold. Amazon, Target.com, walmart.com, Barnes & Noble, all of those book outlets. How the battle you face is your best opportunity. We want you to be encouraged. Get a copy today and also get a copy for a friend. Christmas is right around the corner. Get a copy. Put it in people's stockings. Wrap it up. This right here could save people's lives. A gift card for Christmas to your local restaurant does not save people's lives, but information saves our lives. And I am thankful that Ron wrote the book. And now looking back, I'm thankful we've had our battles because they've made us who we are today.
They were our friend.
Yeah, they were our friend.
Our battles were our friend.
And we're going to continue talking about the necessity of the enemy on our next podcast. So if you want to hear more, listen out for next week, guys, listen.
Don'T forget noom and don't forget stamps. Dot com. Yeah, these are game changers. All right, we love you guys. We'll see you real soon.
