Stop The Madness In Your Life | Ron + Hope: Unfiltered

A Ron & Hope Carpenter YouTube episode (Dec 14, 2023) addressing temptation, recurring life cycles, and generational sin. They explain how desires lead to separation from God (citing James), differentiate spiritual vs. fleshly issues, and describe how 'seeds' (trauma or choices) grow into long-term cycles. Ron outlines four steps to break generational cycles: awareness/confession, repentance (change of mind), verbal application of Jesus' blood, and renouncing legal rights for the sin to operate. The hosts share personal stories, emphasize honesty with family, and promote related resources (marriage conference, mentorship).
Chapters
Before you do. Real raw and relevant. They want to know. They want to know why we're in the same clothes.
They do not care.
Yes, they do.
Because we're doing a part two.
We're doing a part two. We didn't know. I said, don't call it a part two.
We're not calling it part two.
But we just stayed.
We're expounding.
We stayed. We stayed right here and said, guys, let's move this thing on into the next one. So if you look at two of them and we're wearing the same clothes, it's not because we're nasty people.
Oh, my goodness.
Okay. It's because we stayed right there. We felt like we're in something good and we just want to keep it rolling. Introduce us.
And we are Ron and Hope Carpenter. Ron and Hope. Unfiltered, real, raw, relevant issues in your life is what we attack. And so last time we talked about, you know, oops, I did it again. I sinned again. I fell into that trap. Oh, no, you didn't. You were dragged away by your own evil lust and desires. There was.
We talked about the nature. The nature of temptation. Yes, the nature of temptation. James really spells it out. He says, let no one say God has tempted me, for God tempts no man. But when one is tempted, he is dragged away by his own evil desires and enticed. And then when desire conceives, it gives birth to sin. When sin conceives, it gives birth to death. That doesn't mean you die. That means separation. So if you let the desire run its course, it's going to drive. Here's what it says. It's going to drive a wedge between you and God.
Yeah. It separates you. You know that feeling, right? When you sin, when you've done wrong.
And when you've been near God. Draw nigh unto God and resist the devil and he will flee from you. When you have lived nigh. God, you can't not live nigh. God. You can't. As soon as you're wedged, you feel it. You know it. It's a terrible feeling. But that's what we talked about. If you didn't, you know, go, like, go share, go text somebody. Go do what you got to do. Subscribe. Get this thing and everybody's algorithm, because this hits everybody.
It does.
I don't care who you are, how much money you got, who your daddy is, the color of your skin, or what side of town you raised on, everybody deals with temptation. And so we talked about in the last One, how to overcome it.
Right.
You know, what is it and how do you overcome it? Let me recap that. These things, number one, be self aware. Okay? What are my issues? Yeah, what are my issues?
And everybody's are different.
There's some people, you know, some people struggle with money. Yeah. They can't. They can't handle money in their pocket. Other people, you can't take them nowhere near a casino or nowhere near a scratch card for the lottery. There's other people they cannot get around alcohol. There's other people they cannot get anywhere around smoke. There's other people they cannot get anywhere around a computer. They're going to watch porn. I mean, it's a lot of different things for a lot of different people. But hope everybody's got something because as you have told, I think it's one of your main teaching scriptures, Hebrews 12. And the sin, the sin, not a sin. The sin that so easily besets so easily. Yeah. There is a sin that besets or sets back. In other words, you move forward, it sets back. You move forward, it sets back. And you see my hand going in the motion of a cycle. All of a sudden you sit here and say, I'm running in circles. Why? I'm expending energy, but I'm not making up any grain. I'm at the same place.
I keep doing the same thing I've always done. Waiting on God to be a genie in a bottle, to come and poo.
Now, I did that because I was told to do it. There's some people like, well, I thought that's what I thought you're supposed to do. And I would go down to those altar calls where I was going to get up and never feel that again. I'm not saying God doesn't work that way. I've seen those testimonies. I've seen people say I was on cocaine 22 years and God instantly. And they. I got them from the altar and I never did it again. Yeah, okay.
That's rare.
Let me tell you something. Bless the name of the Lord and only God can do that.
Yes.
But most people, their freedom is a.
Journey because we chose to do what we did. We got ourself in those messes. So with God's help, faith and works.
Well, I'm going to differentiate here. There's some cycles that are spirit in nature, those have to be broken and that means they can quit instantly. Things that are in your flesh have to be managed because you do not get delivered from flesh.
No, you don't Never.
Look, I remember a story one time I was at Haywood Mall in Greenville, South Carolina. And you know, God is the ability to minister to a lot of people there. And by that means we're known by a lot of people there. And so person that come to my church came running up to me, stopped me at the top of an elevator, you know, pulled me to the side, and I want you to pray for my son. Tears running down her face. I need him to be delivered. When I started questioning her, everything was a work of the flesh. There are 26 works of the flesh listed in Galatians 5. You will not be delivered from your flesh.
Right.
If I could deliver people from their flesh, I would have the biggest ministry in the earth.
Right.
Okay.
Because flesh is not spiritual.
Exactly. You've got to understand what is spirit in nature and what is flesh in nature. And if you read those. I wish I had my Bible. If you read those 26 works of the flesh, man, when you see how deep, deeply deteriorating your flesh can take your life with no help from demonic power.
Right.
It is scary. The Bible says that sorcery is in your flesh. Sorcery, wow. All types of sexual sin, promiscuity. So when she's saying, be delivered and he's doing this, and he's doing this, and I'm like, ma', am, you know, I didn't say that. I didn't get into theology with her. But that's not a laying on of hands thing. That is a lifestyle thing.
Right. Those are choices.
Those are choices that you will have to make. And those are desires that will have to be starved. Those will provisions you can't make for yourself. And lines of separation you're going to have to create between you and it where it does not easily get to you. Fourthly, until you finally starve the desire.
How bad do you want it?
You've got to starve the desire. Because nothing can live without being fed. And if a desire is strong, it's being fed a lot.
Oh, that's so good. Okay, that's good.
There's no strong desires that barely ever get fed.
That's so good.
Okay, so we're now, you know, first phase into this thing. Let's get started. The spiritual dimension. Okay. Molestation, abuse, rape, molestation, all these things, people. Now, it's not like who's gone through it, it's like who happened.
Right?
Okay. Those things right there, whether they be initiated by you or whether you are the victim of them, it doesn't matter what side you're on if it was a willful sin that you chose or it was a sin committed against you. Either way, it planted seeds.
That's right.
And either way, it will be your responsibility to deal with those seeds.
Yeah. Unfortunately.
That may not seem nearly as nice as your therapist, but the fact is, if you are ever going to be free from it, it is going to be because you took responsibility to confront it and to take the plan of God to overcome it in your life. Nobody's going to come take that away from you. Okay. There are many people that are in twisted lifestyles because something was planted in them. There's many people that are in perverted lifestyles because something was planted in them. Because something happened. And unconfronted seeds grow. It grows. Let me give this very easy example. If an acorn slips into the ground, you know, an acorn comes from an oak tree. If it slips into the soil and the soil begins to give it life, it'll sprout. It'll just have a little, about that big, two or three little leaves off of it. You can literally take the thing, pull.
It up, pull it up two fingers.
And let it die. If I let that thing grow 30 years, you're going to have to have a bulldozer. It's a massive, massive tree. Hear this. With a massive root system.
Because it was unconfronted.
Exactly. Seeds produce cycles. What is a cycle? When you see the same scenery over and over and over and over again. Your 20s, your 30s, end up in the same position. I don't care what job you got, I don't, I don't care what, what, who you're married to, what person it is, you end up divorced. I don't care how much money you make, you're broke, you're in debt. I don't know, it's. No matter what happens, it's the same scenery. The gray hairs are growing, the calendar page is turning, but the scenery is the same.
You tried to avoid the alcohol, but you end up slipping up every three months.
You're right. You are. And so seeds become cycles. What does that mean? That means you may not have anybody in your youth hold your hand, discover that in you and be able to help you through it. But when you become aware, when you. Here's what happens. This is what I noticed. When you're a teenager, you're omniscient. Nobody can tell you anything. When you're a teenager, when your 20s, you start to experience some trouble. When you're in your 30s, things will start falling apart by the Time you get about 40. You know, my mom and dad was right. Yeah. Because what happens as you get older, you can track your issue. I think when you're teen and maybe twenties, you don't realize you're in a cycle.
Right. Because you haven't given it enough time.
It hasn't had enough time. But by the time you're 33 and 34 and 35, you're like, man, keep doing the same. Wait a minute, man. What am I? Listen, listen. I got two kids and you know, I got people depending on me and I'm in here in this same mess.
Yeah.
That I was in when I was 19.
So you are in when you 15, 16, 18, 19. It's just all fun and games.
Right.
You know, I'm just having a good time.
And the older you get, the more difficult the consequences.
That's right. There's more to lose.
Before we talk about how to break these things, let's look right here.

Put it in some stockings and do.
Everything you can to get it to everybody you can, because we enjoy doing this. It's where you kind of get a different swing from the pulpit side of us. Where was I at? Was it seeds produce cycles. We're talking about cycles, Pastor. Give me some biblical proof these cycle things exist. Okay? In the Bible, Abraham was scared that a king was going to take Sarah away from him. Got before the king, lied about Sarah, said it was his sister, okay? And the king was about to take her and then found out Abraham had lied, and he scolded Abraham because he had almost committed a sin by taking his wife. I've always made a joke out of that. Sarah was 90 years old when that happened. I'm like, she's a bad man. When you're so fine at 90 years old, somebody wants you. You're scared somebody's going to take your wife from you. And she's 90. She must be something.
Anyway, that's the lineage Jane Fonda came from.
Is that what it is? Just frozen in time? I guess. Well, here comes Isaac. The bloodline, same thing. Son, son of promise to Abraham, took his wife before the same king was scared the king was going to take her, so he lied the same lie and said, this is my sister.
That something. The same sin, the same generation, exact.
Sin in a generation. The first 10 minutes of this podcast, we talked about some of those cyclical cycle sins have to do with a seed that gets planted in your youth unconfronted, and then becomes a monster later in life. Secondly, many of them are generational sins. Somebody somewhere in your family started something and it's never been confronted. And with every generation, it gets bigger.
You don't just get your mama's blue eyes and your daddy's long fingers. You don't just get the physical traits.
You get all the other things without telling everything because we're real, raw and relevant. But I don't think we'll show everything. When you were going through your very difficult season of healing, one of the things you had some stuff you were struggling with and you didn't know why. I told them you were swinging at the air. I'm fighting stuff, and I don't know why I'm fighting it. And so I don't know how much.
You want it makes you feel crazy. You feel like you're going through this. Why am I going through these issues? So I sat my family down, you.
Went and had a talk with your mom and dad.
Somebody has been lying to me. Somebody's going to talk to me today, and we are going to get to the root. What did you deal with, Mom? What did you deal with, Daddy? What did your. Your parents deal with?
And without talking about it. When you came out of that, a lot of your struggles made a lot more sense.
Yep.
Because until that time, you're just like, is something.
And just as we talked in the last podcast, we sweep this stuff under the rug and don't want to tell anybody, but you have to confess your sins one to another so you can be healed. That's why we're so open with our children. You know, a lot of people get so blown away at how open. We talk with our children about any and everything, but we want them to know this is who we are. This is what happened when we were in high school, this is what we did in college. These were our issues, these were our sins that we struggle with so that they can see the pattern and they can see it coming and stop it in their own lives.
I think of, you know, we preach and travel and podcast and tv, social media and everything so much. I don't know who I've told who what, but backing up a minute. I think I was taught, whether consciously or subconsciously, don't show weaknesses.
Right.
I came from a farming family that quit crying, son. And then I came from a holiness family where sin was never discussed. I'm just going to be honest with.
You because you wanted to make out.
Like, yeah, sin was never discussed. You glow in the dark.
And that's not true.
So, you know, that was kind of what I came from, from my mom's side and my dad's side. That was my environment. And so I didn't want you, and I sure didn't want my children to know flaws. It's hard to live in a house with people and not see your flaws. But I'm going to tell you, I tried dang hard to not let nobody know them.
But that sets people up for failure in your life.
Well, that's where I was going. I don't know who I've told what but one of the great voices in my life for many years was Bishop Jakes. And when my oldest son started struggling, struggling mightily, and we won't even go back through that, but I mean mightily, I had to talk.
Yeah.
And I went to Bishop Jake's and I slobbered and squalled and bawled and everything. And he listened to me, and then he stopped me. And. This is a long story. That's an amazing story, but shortness, because I don't want to bog down here. He told me I'm going to have to go back and find my son, and I'm going to have to confess my faults to him because my son does not know why he's fighting, know what he's fighting, because the only thing you've shown him is victories. And he said, and you have become a person. That's not real to him. That was some of the most sage advice I had ever gotten in my life. And I went back from that trip, got in my truck, went and found my son, and with tears running down my face, went into a parking space and told him every carnal, ungodly, fleshly, awful thing about his dad. And my son wept like a baby. And there was healing that took place in my life and in his because I was willing to let him know.
He could identify with you.
I struggled just like you. He could identify with that guy.
Yeah.
Apostle Ron up there on the stage. He can't identify with him.
I can't live this way, so why try? I can't be perfect, so why try? And that's a lie.
And I tell people, now that I look back on my life, many more people have identified with my pain than ever identify with my. With my trophies. Absolutely nobody really identifies with accomplishments and successes and trophies. They identify with struggle. And you can start talking about, you know, how many times you've won, and people sit there and give you a little golf course clap. But when you start talking about how many times you've lost, the room gets quiet. Why? Because everybody's losing. Everybody's experienced loss, a loss in their life. So cycles, hope, generational curses here. I don't want to be a guy that gives a formula, but there's things that have to happen. Number one, they're in the bloodline. The Bible said the life of a thing is in the blood. Death lives in the blood. Death leaves, lives in the blood. Generational sins live in the blood. So people who may not have been around this kind of teaching, you just didn't get your brown eyes from your dad. You just didn't get your pretty skin from your mom. You got everything else that is in that bloodline. Not just physical features. You got soulish iniquities. The word iniquity means bent. Jesus didn't just save your sins, he was wounded for your transgression. A wound is an outward, an outside scar.
An outside scar somebody can see.
And so Jesus was wounded for the things in your life, the sins that we can see. But he was bruised for iniquities. He was bruised for the areas where you're bent.
Yeah, bruised, bleeding on the inside.
Okay. A bruise is when you've been hurt on the inside and it bleeds on the inside. That's why it turns purple. That's actually blood. Okay, so he was wounded for the sins you do that everybody can see. He was bruised for the secret sins you had that nobody can see. But they torment you. So I want you to know Jesus understands. And Jesus is there right with you. Now let me get back to this. These things have to be confessed. Okay? Number two, after you confess them, these things have to be repented of. Repented of is a change of mind. I don't have time to go into renewing the mind, but there's going to have to be the second stage where you go, I'm going to put something new in my head because listen. Thoughts control desires, desires control decisions, and decisions determine life.
Yeah.
Let me say that again. Thoughts determine desires, desires determine decisions, and decisions make the life that you, if you don't like your life, you don't go back to the desires, you don't go back to the decisions. You go all the way back to the thoughts and you start putting new thoughts. Even Ecclesiastes, Solomon said, there is a season for uprooting and then a season for replanting. So there are some things where you're going to have to go through the process of understanding that you have faulty thought systems. Is a man thinking faulty structures of thinking in your head that have led to many of the places you've come in your life. Because where you think you arrive.
That's right.
Okay, so number one, confession and admittance. Number two, it's going to have to be repented of. Repentance is not a prayer. Repentance is a process of a change of mind, behavior.
Yeah, yeah, you change your mind, which changes your behavior and repentance. And how do you change your mind?
P in The English means five or top.
Yeah.
So Pentagon 5, but it also means penthouse. Top Re means return. Repentance is a return to the top. So when you repent, God can.
God takes you back up here.
God can take you back to the top. Hallelujah. But you got to repent. God's just waiting on repent God. It is very difficult for God to put you back at the top for sins you won't repent of.
And repentance is not. I'm sorry.
Here's the third thing that's apologizing. Application of the blood. Okay? The blood of Jesus verbally has to be applied to the generational sin and the repenting of not only the sins that you've committed, but the sins of your fathers. The Bible talks many times about, come to me and repent of the sins of your fathers, right?
So why do I have to repent?
Their fathers and forefathers were dead generations gone. And he said, because iniquity, Iniquity travels to the third and fourth generation. The Bible says. So you can be literally repenting on behalf of people you have never met. Never met, because iniquity. But the word iniquity means bent. Iniquity is something you're born with. I tell people I said, that beautiful baby after they clean it, that amazing mushy skin and those eyes looking for mama, you know, laying on the bosom of a mama. And it's the most precious thing. Everybody's oohing and ahhing and everything else. That baby is already leaning. It's already got issues already leaning in a certain direction by the sins of the bloodline that had it right.
Don't seem fair, does it?
Iniquity. Iniquity, it means bent. It means twisted. That is why Jesus came up with the concept of being born again.
Again.
The first birth twisted you, the second birth untwisted. So what do you do? You get born again to untwist what the first birth messed up. So many spiritual connotations here are so powerful. And so the blood of Jesus I apply and I tell people when they're going through it, every single one, call them out. And I apply the blood of Jesus to these right here. I applied them in my father, I applied them in my father's father. And anywhere in my generation where this may reside, and it may have been a hidden sin, God, I bring the blood of Jesus to these things. And then number three thing is, they have to be renounced. What is a renouncing? A renouncing is you no longer have legal right to operate in my life. The blood of Jesus has broken the power and the authority of your legal right. In other words, before the blood was applied, you had the right to be in my blood. But now I have brought the blood of Jesus, spotless blood into the scenario. And by that I renounce you. And you have no legal right to function and operate in my life from this point forward. And when those four things have been totally carried out, you will see cycles begin to break off your life.
But you can't open the door again.
Exactly. But that second one's tough. You know, that's the reason for repentance. If you don't repent and change your mind, you're going to open the door again.
Yes, you are.
You got to think differently. So, you know, first one, be aware and confess it. Second one, repent of it. Number three, apply the blood. Number four, renounce its legal right to operate in your life and family. And it will be broken. And I want to encourage some of you, alcoholism was horribly in my dad's side of the family. Now, I know there's a lot of people with a drinking problem. That's not what I'm talking about. I hope you've seen it. Some of it would. You saw my dad's sister.
Yeah.
I mean, drinking. They died 24 hours a day.
They drink till they died.
They drink and didn't eat. They drink and didn't sleep. They. They live to drink.
Yeah.
One of them had such a sickness. Yeah. And so it was all in my dad's family. My dad's daddy died of alcoholism. My dad's granddaddy was an alcoholic. My dad's sister, it was. We tried to eat Thanksgiving when it was so sad to sit and watch because she couldn't even be coherent. And the way she would sneak off because she had to have was generational in the bloodline. But I'm not an alcoholic.
That's right.
And I'm not an alcoholic because I'm such a great person. I'm an alcoholic because my father stood between two generations and said, this will not happen.
He did the work.
He did the work and he was raised in it. That's all he saw. My father's family business was a pool hall. For those of you who don't know the Southern pool hall, it was a bar and pool hall. It's where you went to play a beer joint. That's where you went to a beer joint. You went to get drunk and play pool and you get pistol whipped. You get beat with pool sticks. He saw all this stuff. That was his life. And then he went into a home. He said, son, he said, I was embarrassed to carry a date to my house. I said, why? He said, because my dad could be laying in the floor naked in a pile of throw up. That was my dad's life. I've experienced none of that.
Right.
Because my dad stood between two generations. That's the same thing I wanted to do with poverty. Poverty was generational in my dad's life. I don't think my dad got to break it. But I told you, I said, with trusts and with different methods of doing things, with passive streams of income and being entrepreneurial in my life, being intentional. I want to be the guy who broke it in my family. And I want generations from now saying, we live well and point to a picture and say, and I heard that my great great grandmother and grandfather did this for us and they broke it in our life. And ever since then we have prospered as a family.
Right?
That's what I want to do. And hopefully I will be able. My life will bear that out. But I want to tell some of you, this is highly spiritual. The application of the blood and then the planting of new seeds that creates new cycles.
That's so good.
Cycles of blessing. Cycles of blessing, so good. Cycles of greed have to be replaced with cycles of generosity.
Right.
Cycles of anger have to be replaced with cycles of kindness and joy. Cycles of depression have to be replaced with cycles of life. Cycles of fear have to be replaced with cycles of confidence in God and faith. And these battles are winnable.
They are, but they're not easy and they're not quick. We want quick, but this is not quick.
Everybody does.
Yeah, but you have to be determined. And it's like the book that I just wrote comes out in February.
If you don't fight, you don't win.
You don't win if you're not willing to fight for it. If you don't want it bad enough, you will stay in your sin cycles and be miserable.
I've had moments where in God, God did something miraculous for me and I cherish those moments. But I've had at least just as many where God said, I'm not going to deliver you from the fiery furnace. I'm going to get in the furnace with you.
With you.
I'm going to get in it with you. And when we come out, you won't even smell like smoke so good, but I'm going to get in it with you. So he either delivers you from it or he gets in it with you and helps you walk through it and not smell like smoke. But either way, you'll be delivered either way. And so that's what I wanted to share. We're a little bit over a half hour mark that we'd like to talk about. So good though.
This is life changing.
You need to go back and watch the last one and watch these two together. You really do.
These are life changing. If you'll grab ahold of these truths, it will literally transform your life. And Ron and I love coming and sharing what God's taught us, what we've overcome in our life, you know, and.
Can we just be a selfish promotion right here? Our marriage conference can help break a lot of this.
Oh, goodness, yeah. If you are married and you say, man, I've got cycles all in my marriage. I don't see a way out. You got to come let me say.
This or the cycle that destroyed my last marriage, I see it rearing its head and I don't, I don't want to be married eight times. Pastor Ron, I want to work. I've made mistakes. I've seen things fall to the ground. I've seen collateral damage with my kids. I want this to work. It can work and it can break.
But it is work.
It'll work. If you work, you're going to have to, you're going to have to repent and put some new stuff in there. We can help you with that.
