Canfield Coaching: Mind Mapping

This is a short YouTube interview excerpt (Jack Canfield interviewing coach Lisa Sorensen) explaining the coaching technique of mind mapping. Lisa describes creating a poster-board style mind map with a specific goal in the center, chunking that goal into subgoals and bite-sized tasks, and using a "rule of five" (five daily actions) to progress. She gives a personal example of training for a half marathon (nutrition, 6 small meals/day, 72 ounces of water, new shoes, joining a running community). The clip closes with a call-to-action to view the full hour interview via the Canfield Inner Circle at jackcanfield.com.

Hi, I'm Jack Canfield and I'm standing here with Lisa Sorensen, who's one of our coaches at the Canfield training group. And we just finished an hour long interview with Lisa and one of our other coaches where I was asking them all about coaching and how coaching works and what are the benefits of coaching and some of the success stories we've had. But most importantly, we were talking about some of the techniques that we use in coaching and they're so valuable and anyone can begin to apply those to their life right now, including the one I'm going to ask you to talk about here, which was mind mapping. You told a great story about the power of mind mapping and the technique. So could you share that again?
Sure. So mind mapping is basically chunking it down into bite sized pieces. So if you can imagine yourself with a big poster board, you'll have that poster board with a circle in the middle and that is your goal. Goals are meant to be very specific and clear. And so in the middle circle is your specific goal. And then you chunk that down into sub goals is what I call them. And then you chunk those sub goals down into bite sized pieces and they're bite sized, doable pieces. Because what we tend to do is make giant to do lists that become overwhelming. So then once you've broken that down into those little bite sized pieces, you're able to focus on a rule of what we call five. What five things can I do today to get closer to my goals. And it's a great way to stay focused on those little tiny pieces and see yourself accomplishing those bite sized pieces to get to the big goal in the middle.
Now you talked about the example you gave was you wanted to run a half marathon and tell us like if I'm looking at your vision board, I got half marathon by a certain date. And then what are some of the things, there's little spokes that go out from the central wheel. What are some of the things you wrote down on there for your own self?
So some of those sub goals would be eating healthy, finding certain ways to eat better. I found that when I eat six meals a day, that works better for me. Six small meals a day. So I figured out how I was going to do that. My other sub goal was drinking more water because I wasn't drinking enough water. So I found a way to mind map that into those little pieces of drinking 72 ounces of water a day, getting new shoes, going to the running store. And I actually got on Facebook and joined the running company, the Salt Lake Running Company's website, so that I could keep in touch with other runners, so that I could know what I was doing right and what I was doing wrong. I researched as much as I could. And so those were those sub circles that we talked about.
Very good. So if you'd like to know about how to use the vision board, how to use the mind mapping technique, how to use goal setting, and all the different things that we focus on in the program, things I'm sure you've heard about but may not know exactly how to do. If you'd like to know that and a lot more about coaching, tune in. Come to our Inner circle club@jackcampfield.com and you can watch the entire hour long interview that I did with Lisa and Wade. And if you do that, you're going to be available to really understand and learn that which you need to do to take your life to the next level. Because we all know we want more. Everybody wants more. And a coach is somebody that can help hold you accountable to producing the results. You want, someone that can see you in a way you don't know how to see yourself, and someone that has the tools and the toolbox that you guys have to help you take these principles and concepts and actually make them real in your life. So if you'd like to know more, come to jackcampfield.com, click on the inner circle button and join us and we watch this interview.
