Short excerpt from a YouTube video (dialogue) discussing the concept of “forward focus” referenced in the book 'Who’s in Your Room?'. Speakers contrast living ‘in the past’—letting past patterns, fears, and memories drive future choices—with intentionally choosing and creating a desired future through values and vision work. The clip highlights that avoiding past pains is not true forward focus.
So one of the things you talk about in who's in youn Room? Is this concept of forward focus. Can you unpack that a little bit? Because I think that's an important idea.
Well, most of us are living in the past even as we're planning for the future. And what I mean by that is the patterns from the past, the memories from the past, the fears from the past, the bad experiences from the past are driving the choices we're making about the future which are being driven by determination to not have them be like the past. And we think that that's forward focus. There actually isn't.
So we're about avoiding the past, recreating itself, rather than choosing what the future we want is.
Yes. So that's why I think this values work you do with people so important or you get people to create a vision for their life is so important. As we get them through understanding these distinctions and get them to committed to being good at something now they're going to choose for the future. There's another thing I watch people do. I watch many people justify every change they want to make in their life by making the past wrong.
