Jagadeesh P walks through completing a full design project in one day: identifying the problem, ideating, prototyping, documenting, and pitching it. Built for designers building portfolios and landing jobs.
I have no projects in my portfolio and nobody has ever taught me any projects in design and how to create a portfolio. And I wanted a job how somebody can help me if you are in that zone, if you don't have a proper system to help you or guide you, or if you don't have any materials to learn and do a good design project, take a lot of notes, guys. You're going to really make a project in one single day if you exactly follow what I'm saying. Take notes, implement and take action. Okay, so let's dive into this podcast to learn how to do a design project in one day. Welcome, guys. Welcome. This is Jagdish. Thank you for staying tuning with me in this podcast, Design for Change. Thank you for subscribing me and take lot of notes. Today we are going to do something really magical. Lot of people will have a, what do you call a debate. Hey, how come you are in one day you will do a project? Hey, what about the quality here? You will not do it that perfect here. Hey, why do you do that? That's wrong. You can't do it in one single day. Let me tell you guys what you think is what you become. Simple. End of the story. Whoever says whatever says leave that. It's definitely possible to do a project in one single day, if you exactly follow what I'm saying. Okay, so I'm going to be giving you four breaks, okay? So 1, 2, 3, 4, 2, 2 hours each. So eight hours we are going to be taking. It's not even 16 or 20 hours per day. I'm saying, I'm just saying eight hours, okay? Undivided attention apart from eating lunch, drinking water, and also taking any kind of a breaks, okay? This eight hours is full, full, full, packed without any distraction, you will have to do it. Okay, so first let's go into the step one, which is the first break. So you have to switch on your timer when you're doing this activity, okay? So remember all these things what I'm telling you before going into the subject and concept. I'm just setting you the grounds of how you have to be prepared first, okay? So you can have the timer, you can have the, what you call a mobile phone or laptop or whatever you wanted to have it. And make sure you switch off all your notes, notifications and put it in airplane mode. Have a water bottle with you, pen, pencil, sketch pen, notepad, everything, and lock your room until the next two hours. Nobody is going to disturb you. Okay? So the first step, what you have to do Is you will have to find a problem to solve. Hey Jagdish. I don't know how to solve a problem. I don't know even how to choose a problem Here. Very simple. Guys. Look around. Find one big pressing problem near your society, okay? Near your street, near your district, near your state, near your country, near your world. Don't you think you can't find any one problem. People are smoking and spoiling their lungs, right? People are drinking alcohol and spoiling their livers, right? People are actually getting into drug addiction, right? I've told you three problems. Just three. Just 10 seconds. How much you can think, how much problems you have. Don't worry. It's a small big problem I can't solve. I cannot solve in one day. It's possible. That is not the case. Just do what I'm exactly saying then and only you will be able to crack it down. Okay? And then try to redefine the problem. See. Okay. How you can redefine it. Say, let's say if you're taking any drug problem, okay? You wanted to solve people who are taking abusive drugs and all these things. So try to redefine that problem. I'm going to be creating a solution where I'm going to be solving the problem of drug free society. I am going to target the users from 20 to 30 age, okay? Who are the maximum users of the drug. Do a quick research about that. Do a quick ChatGPT research. Do a quick Google search. You can find lot of statistics and perfect details about that particular thing. It hardly takes 30 minutes to do 10 different statistics about the problem, right? We have everything in front of us. What's stopping you? And try to create an impact for that problem. Okay? If I create this solution and lot of people are getting saved because of this, what is the impact will create? Lot of crimes in the society will come down there. That's the real thing will happen. So you're going to create a problem, create a solution which is going to solve the drug people. Drug people are taking drug over at age of 20 to 30. And it's going to save a lot of crimes which is going to happen in the next 10 years. That's it. Your problem statement is ready. You redefined it and then you add an impact. And then now you put a timeline. I'm going to be solving this problem before the end of the day, six o'. Clock. Simple. That's it. So you're good to go. Guys. First step is really really ready. So when you know how to redefine A problem, you will know how to start thinking about that solution. See, when you raw think like hey, I want to solve drug problem. Okay? I will introduce anti drugs into the hospitals. I will ask people not to buy drugs in the store. I will put some posters and awareness which is don't go into the solution mode. Just think about the problem and try to redefine and reframe it properly. Okay? The more specific you go, the terrific you become. The generic you go, you will not become anything. Specific is always terrific. My mentor used to always say specific is terrific. You know what is the difference between Google and ChatGPT? Why ChatGPT? Entire world is celebrating and it's a next revolution which is coming, which is already there. Okay. It's going to even disrupt. It's because Google gives you general information. Chat GPT gives you very specific information and you should know how to use the prompts. Okay? I'll be recording a separate podcast for it, don't worry. But you should know how to trigger that fonts that prompts. Unless until you know how to do that, you won't be able to getting a spot specific research, right? So unless until your problem statement is specific, you can't do it. Okay, so being said that you need to spend 30 minutes for doing a research about a topic taking a lot of data and you need to spend another one hour on thinking about what is the impact and what is the other areas this problem touches nationally, internationally, locally. Like the study about the people, study about the problem, study about the government policies or do a little research about one hour and spend another 30 minutes for documenting this works. See parallel you let to do a documentation, I'll do it later. No, that doesn't happen. Then you will not be able to discipline yourself to complete this project in a day. Okay, Just trust me guys. Because a lot of people do this project, but they don't do documentation. They have everything in their mind. They don't do documentation. That's why they have hundreds of projects not in the portfolio, in their mind only. So if you wanted to really have a good project, you need to know how to document it. If you're doing one and a half hours of work, you should know 20 to 30 minutes how to document it. So now create a good PPT or maybe slides or maybe word file or maybe use your website directly to start putting your projects. Yeah, you can start putting in your websites itself, all the research, everything you can show the complete exploration and process process. What's stopping you? People will know what kind of skills you're applying, right? This is the first step, guys. The second step is now come for ideation. Once your problem statement is clear. Now think about various ways how you can solve it. See, when you're ideating, this is a rule number one. You should switch on your timer. You should switch on your airplane mode. Do not get distracted. No call, nothing. Just focus that for 30 minutes. Do it another 30 minutes. Okay? Two chunks and you should have something in the mind. Rule number two, you should not get biased with any ideas whether it will work or not. Whether it's a small or big, you should just write it down. Okay? Rule number three. You should write thinking. You have all the resources in the world. You have all the designer support in the world. You have all the technology in the world. You have all the wealth and money to implement that solution in the world. What kind of solutions? You will write Crazy solutions. You will write, right? Yes. That's how creativity will come. So this is the three rules which you need to keep. Okay? So when you do a 30 minutes creativity like this and then you take a five minutes break and then you start another 30 minutes, that comes real creativity. Your mind will be in the state of flow. There is a book called Flow. You can read that book, guys. It will show you how you can get a flow when you do something consistently and long. See, from the morning you've been doing this research, right? Like let's say if you started 8 o', clock, okay? Till 10 o' clock you're doing the research. And half an hour you're taking a break. And 11:30 to 1:30 you're doing this. By the time 1:30 or 1 o' clock reaches, you will be in the state of flow. Because you'll be thinking about only drug, drug who are using it. What's the problem? How I can solve how, how, where problem is happening. This is my problem statement. See, this is undivided focus and attention. Focus is the biggest wealth, guys. If you don't know how to focus, no matter how much genius and intelligent quotient you have, you will not become successful at all. You will just become a normal person. You'll be a Norma. That's it. But if you don't have that much of intelligence and iq also if you have that mindset to just focus continuously, you will become 10 times bigger than the person who is really brilliant. It's a fact. I'm telling you. It's a stat. I've seen that one of my mentor brain trains, he told that because I just believe him, he always takes study research people stats and then he projected in his books. So he said people who with a very, very normal intelligence are the most successful person if they app apply focus and attention for a longer time. You are going to do that. That is how you're going to make your one project in one day. Okay? Yes. So now after you start doing this 30, 30 minutes of you then spend another 30 minutes on talking to people, meeting some people. Maybe you can meet virtually because you can't travel. If it's something like your stakeholder is next to your home or maybe your mom, dad or some relevant person, just you can talk to them quickly. Okay. Or you can meet virtually, you can just talk to person who is there. Maybe you can just give some kind of keywords to just search about the website and you can understand what kind of a solutions these people have offered. Try to take some solutions which is ready made online. First you think, then see the online and then another 30 minutes you ideate on yourself. See, I just sandwiched these ideas. Guys, I'm not asking you to only get carried away by the market or the ideas or the competitors or the readymade solution. First you think, then you go out and then you think for 30 minutes. End of the 30 minutes you will be like having superb ideas, wonderful ideas and then do 30 minutes of documentation. Okay, so when you have a lot of ideas, which is raw ideas, now go for the step three. Take a half an hour break and then you start from 3 o'. Clock. Okay? 3 to 5. So 3 to 5 you will have to build solutions and products and prototype for it. Try to build some architecture of the solution, whatever you want to solve. Like let's say if you want to solve a bus route problem, try to create a map of where this bus travels. What are the problems associated, Try to bring that solution. Okay, I'm going to be putting a bus stops here, here and here and here so that people will shred the crowd so that the bus can travel smoothly without any problem. Right? This is your solution. You need to build that map very clearly for the people to showcase that map, showcase that bus stop and everything. This is called putting information architecture and connecting the flows. See, I'm just explaining you in a very skeletal way. But information architecture is something when you structure your information, when you put your proper data steps flow and then you draw a connection for it. That's called information architecture. But the solution is very simple. Like let's say if you're a map, if you're solving a map problem For a bus. So it's as simple as that. You need to project that architecture then and only people will able to understand it, right? Whatever you're doing, you're going to document it. So whether it be a government policy change, whether it be a big policy change, or whether it will be a solution which is not cannot be implemented, or whether you just install a bus stand, that's also a solution. Do not think always websites will solve the problem. Do not always think application design will solve the problem. I will design application ui. UX designers are paid most. So I need to attract that recruiters. Let me design an app. Let me design a website. You are cheating yourself. I don't think design field is for you if you are in that mindset. No, I'm telling you bluntly, straight to the point. I don't want to beat around the bush people who are having that kind of a thinking. You will definitely go away after a few years or maybe few months. Because people will see through that. If you're not creative, if you're not thinking openly to receptive for solving problem, you will become a laborer in a company, guys. You will become a just a. Somebody will give, come, come, come and they'll give you say hey, you need to do this poster. Hey, you need to make this screens. That's it. You will not even do research, you will not even understand. You will not even do strategy, problem statement, ideation, creation. You will just implement the things in softwares. Don't worry guys. Machine learning is getting lot more fancier than you. It's going to automate all the graphic design work and prototype works and everything in a hundred x creative than you. If you are a design laborer, wait for it. You will be thrown away from the industry soon. That is why you need to have a unique flavor touch with you which is called your creativity. Choosing your problem, thinking about it. When you do this, then people will see that originality in you. Okay? So do not think about anything. Just work on that. Try to solve the problem. Try to solve the problem and then take 30 minutes to go and document these ideas. See, it's very important. One hour. You did research about information architecture and then you implemented the solution. 30 minutes. You can use some applications like Figma, Adobe XD to build your screens. If you don't know that software, leave it just you can put it in a word file or you can just draw as sketch. That's hundred times better than showing lot of fancier stuff. Because when you show something, live real with like a Natural feel. People get attracted to it. It's real. Okay, so the last two hours now we are going to prepare a LinkedIn page, we are going to prepare a Glassdoor account, we are going to prepare a Facebook account, we are going to prepare a monster account. Very quick, right? See you should have all your photos or photo shoot. If you have done a professional photo shoot or if you don't have just take your best pics. There is a thing called BG rem. Okay, you can remove your backgrounds, you can create a very good cool pictures in seconds. You can right now also do it when you are after listening this podcast. Okay? So have your pictures ready, have your account ready. Just upload this project in a page or in your website or in your PDF file or whatever is there. Just upload it and then save it. Okay, so four portals. I've told you. Let's say if you wanted to upload in Fever, if you wanted to upload in any kind of upwork.com for freelancing, that's okay, you can do it, not a problem. And then now comes the interesting thing. You need to go to the best industries. Like let's say if your problem statement is something related to toothpaste, you can go to Colgate, you can go to Pepserunt. Try to understand Pepserunt has a design studio or who is the head of the design studio or who's the HR or recruiter or somebody go and directly ping them or pitch them, tell them, hey, I've designed a solution like let's say okay, let's take drug because we are dealing with a problem of drug abuse, right? So let's say if you're going to something like ministry of substance abuse or narcotics or something, you find somebody in LinkedIn with a narcotics department who is a director or who is a what you call some kind of a commissioner or some kind of a person who is working there. Tell them, hey, I have a solution exactly like how we can bring a drug free society for the age of 20 to 30 by implementing my simple system and solution. Can I get few minutes time to talk to you? That's it. How come he will not reply you? Because they will be surrounding with that problem for years, right? Whether he is a police officer in narcotics or whether if he is a strategy guy who is making policies to change it or whether he is any kind of a person who is working there because everybody is working for that common goal, right? When you are able to come up with some kind of a solution, they will be first happy to receive you. So know how to pitch for which industries for which project. Choose that and then try and do it for 10 different companies. Same 10 different drug companies. Like let's say there would be another company called what you call Addiction Killer. Let's say so you can go to Addiction killer website and you can go to the addiction killer any kind of a companies and then ask them, Hey, I have a solution for getting addicted out of the drug. I have a solution. Can we have an interview? I would like to work with you. Hey, no problem here. I'm an intern only. You don't have to pay me anything. But give me a chance of three months to work. Yeah, people would be happy to give you. If you're an intern, try, feel free to ask it. Once you deliver a three months of great work and dedicated super project, then ask for a salary. Ask for, hey, can you pay me 50,000 to 60,000? Because that's how designers get nowadays. So I've delivered a three months of good work. Why don't you try? I'll deliver 10 times better. I'll learn the skill. Guide me right? So this is how you expand your career. Also moving forward, you should not get stuck guys, eight hours. You need to just follow, follow, follow. Do what I'm exactly saying then and only at the you will get a lot of interview calls. You will get a lot of interview what you call selections. You'll see your portfolio and project will get shortlisted. You have to apply for at least 10 industries, okay? Without that you should not stop this project. So let me recap you guys. The first is identifying the problem and redefining it. The second is doing some ideation and doing some research about the problem and then just trying to bring some solution. Spend two hours for this. Third is going and finding out and how to implement it and create some solutions and information architecture and prototypes or whatever physical product or something. You create that prototypes and keep it ready. The fourth most important thing is create an account, upload your projects and just start pitching for 10 different industries. When you don't know how to pitch for an industries, Try to use ChatGPT for taking some information. Hey, let's say if I wanted to impress a guy from what do you call let's say Amazon. He's a designer and one of my project is very much aligning with that. How do I write a sales hook sentences. Ask in ChatGPT. It will give you don't copy paste that guys. Just reframe it in your way. ChatGPT is a tool, okay? Do not believe on that. You should take that and you have to reframe yourself and then pitch it. I'm just helping you to become more productive. I'm not asking you to get carried away by the tools. Okay. Yeah. So you have to copy paste and you have to send it. Simple. And then do it like this for four continuous Sundays, guys. One Sunday, second Sunday, third Sunday, fourth Sunday. You would have applied to more than 50 industries by now. Who told you will not get job in the second month start. You will be flooded with lot of interviews. Right. If you follow exactly what I'm saying. In between the week also you will get a lot of interviews. Okay. So wishing you all the best, guys. Do it. And definitely you will get results. I'm not recording podcast for for any kind of a pleasure or any kind of want to share this, that and all. I wanted to help people genuinely solve their problem. Many people are stuck thinking of perfection, thinking of this that I nobody's there to help me this that I want a job. I don't know what to do. This one particular podcast is going to help you for the next 30 days. Four Sundays to get you four good projects in your portfolio. What else you need? Okay, so if you feel free to. If you wanted to just get in touch with me or communicate with me to know more about it, just drop in an email I've given you in the below. If you feel this podcast has added value for you, give me a best rating in Spotify and Apple podcast. Thank you so much guys. Take care. All the best. Cheers. God bless Sam.
