A designer breaks down why UI/UX and product designers earn top salaries. The speaker covers value proposition, ROI, design thinking, emotional design, and collaboration skills, then pitches a mentorship program for designers wanting higher pay.
In this podcast I'm going to tell you there are 14 different reasons why UI UX and product designers are paid very, very crazily high. Okay? A lot of people have misconceptions that UI UX doesn't have scope, they're having a very less salary and a lot of people only earn low money, but few people only earn a lot of money. So I'm going to tell you this is very different what you think about. Okay, so 14 Reasons is going to really flip towards your mindset how you can really earn that much of salaries. Also by understanding the reality and facts. Okay, let's jump into this podcast. So the very first reason why UI UX designers are paid crazy is let me tell you guys the total value in what you add and the total value proposition what you are able to bring to the table then and only you will be getting paid more. Okay? If you are, if you are solving a problem and, and then if you're able to convince your customer or your client or your organization that your value proportion is so and so high by your design, by your ideas, you really started even eliminating a separate need of a department by addressing that in your design as a solution, then that becomes a great value. And let's say if the department building cost us, let's say five crore rupees, it takes two or three months to build. You save that much of money and efforts and manpower, right? So that's what will make you establish a great honesty in your field. Okay? Lot of people have a very abstract way of telling their ideas and value proposition. But designer can able to showcase this kind of a value add. That's why they are paid very, very crazy guys. And let me tell you guys, the second reason is the return on investment in UI ux field is 9900% ROI. The digital products are not like physical products guys, where it requires a physical shipping, laborer, inventory, this, that manufacturing cost mater, rental cost, real estate, Digital products and other products are very, very, very, very, very, very minuscule guys. Okay, the kind of the way in which the digital products are taking the market is way more higher. In weeks and months time new products are getting released. So the product development life cycle has shortened. That's why if you're able to invest money like one rupee, you're going to get a 9900% ROI guys. That's why your salary is definitely going to be high. You need to get this clarity. Okay, so before going into the third part, let me tell you one thing guys. You need to Understand this story. See, remember three P's, okay? This is what my mentor told me when I started doing this, okay? So he said three P's are very important. Okay? Find out what is your passion in design. With your passion, if you're able to solve a problem, then you will get profit. Passion, problem, profit. These three words are connected. If your passion lies in cooking, but if you're not really solving any problem and then you're just cooking on weekends for you and your family, that's okay. But that's not how you solve a problem and that's not what you will get a profit for. Let's say if your passion is going to help anybody solve their problem or a business solve their problem, or industry solve their problem, you are going to get profit. Passion, problem, profit, 3p. The more you add value, the more profit you will get. The more passionate and more problems you solve, the bigger profit you will get. It's as simple as that. Guys, you need to understand this. Okay? The third important example, which I'll give you, third important reason why it is, is see guys, the way in which you think and add a value to the organization is really matters. And let me tell you, in a world of mundane jobs and roles and responsibilities, designers make a very differentiation value. Okay, I'll give you an example to understand it. Let's say if you're a gardener, okay, so you're working for a gardening job and then you're just doing what they're saying. You're your boss, whatever he's saying, okay? Like let's say a supervisor is there, he's managing 10 other gardens like you, okay? So he's telling, hey, plant this particular seed here. Hey, just take a hole here. Hey, just water the plant today. Just plant a seed there. Next week you plant a seed there. Okay, so go and pick the coconut from the tree next week. So he's managing, you're just executing whatever you're saying, okay? Whether your salary will be high or that supervisor salary will be high, definitely the supervisor salary will be high, right? So have you ever wondered why? Because he is thinking strategically. What plant needs to be planted at which area, what plant requires what amount of water, how do the coconuts are getting plugged and how it is converted into market and made money and profit for the organ for the owner and how the entire garden can be made ecosystem clean, fresh and green by maintaining it in a regular basis. You're just executing the job. Designers add a value like that. Designers create a lot of thinking in order to change lot of things in that. So design thinking will eliminate sometimes a big problems what people are talking about. Design thinking will sometimes eliminate some of the products and services in our organization, which is not really required, which is unnecessarily creating more consumerism and confusion in the people's lifestyle. If you are able to question that, you will be paid more, guys. So you have to remember this example. Are you going to be an executor? Are you going to be a design thinker? Okay, here the garden is supervisor is a design thinker because he is absolutely knowing what needs to be done, what need not have to be done. You need to understand this. Okay, so the fourth reason what I'll tell you is design for emotion is the current trend. Guys, can I tell you why people buy products? Can I tell you why people don't buy products? It's because of the liking and the emotion they associate with that buying decision. People don't buy it logically or rationally, guys. People buy it emotionally. Maybe the form factor, maybe the functionality, maybe the, maybe the color, maybe the sensual appeal, maybe the functionality. Something is really attached to their emotion. Can I tell you, designers do designs for people's emotions. That's why it's got a human centric design. It's not a functionality design, it's not a aesthetic design. It's a human centric design which covers functionality, which covers aesthetics, which covers the business angle, which covers the cost of cost, affordability, covers the manufacturability. Then and only people are going to buy your products and services fast. Apple has become successful because of user centric design. Tesla has become more successful because of user centric design. Ideo has invented a cart, designed the cart which nobody has ever thought a shopping cart could be like that. You can read a, you can watch that case study in YouTube. IDEO cart design. How much design thinking process they've eliminated and how much cleanliness they brought to that entire product and what is the thinking amount of design process gone into it? Okay, people really make emotional decisions, guys. And there is a book called Emotional Design by Don Norman. It's a beautiful book, guys. I'll tell you if your product and service is lovable by people and they really emotionally connect with that, you're gonna get paid huge, guys. That's why designers are paid very, very huge. Okay, let me give you one more understanding, guys. See, it's not a, it's not just like that. I'm saying you. Okay, so there are some statistics also which is projecting that I already told you, return on investment is 9,900% ROI for a digital designer. Okay, the digital landscape is constantly evolving, guys. The companies are really creating huge number of demands. And let me tell you guys, effective ui, UX and product design industries directly impacts the company's bottom line. Studies by Design Management Institute show that design centric companies outperform the S&P 500 by significant margin. This is huge guys, significant margin. They are improved. So well designed products leads to higher user engagement and conversion rates. It ultimately increases the revenue and profit. So they'll pay you a good money, right? If the revenues and profits are good. So ux, UI research, information architecture, interaction design, usability testing, visual design. This is not a conventional way in which the earlier problems are solved. Now the skill set and the complexity, what a designer solves a problem is very, very high. That's also a great reason why the entire value, what we are putting is converting into revenues and you are going to get paid for that. You need to get this clarity guys, because if you understand numbers and statistics, you will have a much more clarity. Okay, so the fifth important reason I would say like let's say sixth important reason why designers are paid crazy is the value. What they were able to equate in the whole product lifecycle management is very high. Okay, Let me tell you guys, if you design a product well, if you design it with a user centric approach, can I tell you how many problems you are solving before the product comes with a lot of complaints. After going into the market, you are saving lot of service cost, you are saving after, you are saving lots of after sales market cost, you are saving lot of what you call repair and maintenance cost, you are saving a lot of what you call brand value for your cost. So everything is associated with the cost, guys. You know what, if you are a designer who is able to equate that properly and show the value proposition to the company, no matter what company you're working as, people will love to hire you, give you promotions, make you pay 2x or 3x more. This one important thing, what I told you is going to flip your life. A lot of people are getting what you call laid off, guys. Okay? Today also one of my student, he said he was a very earliest student, okay? He is a very good student and he was working in a different design organization. So he said I have been laid off. So I said what should I do? So the thing is, layoff is becoming very, very normal. He is not a continuous learner, he has some issues and he is not able to exactly keep up his learning continuously. That's why field will eliminate you very easily. Designers needs to learn continuously and then only your salaries will grow, guys. Or else AI is already taking over a lot of industries. So be very careful about it, okay? The point is, I'm able to guide and help him. He'll definitely get a job again. But on the first place, if you would have listened to me properly and taken action, you would have not gone into that situation at all, okay? So the thing is, you should be more careful about this kind of situation. So the value proposition, what you bring and how you are equating it to a money, how the opportunity cost you are able to save. Because of your perfect design, management will able to recognize you and pay you more, okay? The seventh important reason why designers are paid crazy is the communication. What they bring. Let me tell you guys. Designers precisely communicate what they want, what is their concept, what they are thinking, how the value will come. And I'll give you proportionally another important fact. People who communicate better, they will be paid better. Because communication is a soft skill. And money lies in soft skill. My mentor always says, if you are more able to communicate clearly and articulate your ideas and effectively work with your management, that no matter what field you are, sales, marketing, design, engineering, testing, no problem, guys, you will be highly, highly paid, okay? I'm just telling you very clearly because design is all about communication, okay? Visual communication, it's a graphic communication or anything. So designers inherently build that skill. There are some poor designers as well. I'm not talking about them. There are some designers who are in the field of learning that that's also good. But there are exceptional designers whom I work with. They have a very good communication skill. If you're able to communicate abstract ideas in a more clear way, your value proposition will be very huge and people will pay for you. That, guys, you need to be very smart in that you need to understand the importance of what it is, okay? And let me tell you the eighth reason. Designers have a very special creative touch, guys, which AI cannot replace. Let me tell you, even if AI takes a decision for design concepts to generate hundreds and hundreds of wireframes and prototypes and ideas and methods, a human component is definitely required to take a decision making. Okay? The accuracy of the AI may be measured and metricated, but the human touch and the psychology and the creativity what we are using cannot be measured. It can go even beyond the measurements. It can be very, very, what you call it will be very seemingly difficult to measure the measure what we have in our brain A typical average human brain is only used 10 percentage. Guys. Imagine if you're using 20 percentage, 30 percentage. So AI is no way compatible, no way comparable. We invented the AI guys. So human touch is always making the designers gets paid more high. Okay? And another important reason why designers are paid crazy is they don't do mundane roles, guys. They go out of box. They go beyond their roles and responsibilities and take that risk. And when you take that risk and then when you are able to deliver output, people will value and pay you more. Another reason why designers are paid more is they have a very collaborative nature. They have a like let's say they don't have a habit of working in an isolated way. The way in which the curriculum was taught is itself is like that. In many organizations people don't grow because of politics. When two, three humans are coming into a picture and teamwork is happening, a lot of politics, this, that will there. But let me tell you to the knowledge what I've seen. I work with 15 to 16 country designers. The culture, what a design studio typically has is very, very liberating, very open minded, very flexible. And that's why people were able to less get afraid of this fear of judgment. And they put a lot of ideas and they get a lot of outputs as well. The more you collaborate, the better you will be able to contribute to your organization and your output will be great guys. See if you're not collaborating, you'll be thrown out. It's a nature of designers work also. So they are paid high because of that reason. Okay, so the 10th important reason I would say is design investments are relatively low compared to a big infrastructure investment. Like let's say buying big servers, buildings, this, that. No guys, design investments are relatively low. That's why the return on investment company is able to measure it very fast. The 11th reason why designers are paid crazy is unlike a manufacturing, unlike another different engineering studies, unlike a different management studies. The learning curriculum of design is learn by doing. Learn by doing. Learn by doing. It's not learning by just reading a book. What happens if you learn by doing? The more faster you will be able to implement. The more faster you will be able to understand the process. The more faster your product rolls out of the market, the more faster you will be getting a profits out of it. And that's why you will be able to pay more. Design curriculum is very special because of that reason guys. Because design cannot be taught in any colleges, in books, this, that and all design can only be learnt when you do it. Okay? Mentors can guide you. Okay? So leave that mundane way of working. That's why we are not implementing whatever we are learning in our engineering, in our testing, in our management, in our whatever studies we are doing. Okay? You need to be very careful about it because whatever your curriculum is, that will reflect in your work. Whatever your work is getting reflected, that will reflect in your paycheck. Okay? And the 12th important reason why designers are very, very creative and why they are able to get more value is the unpredictability and the curiosity and creativity what they bring into ideation. See if the idea gets succeeded, it could be a million dollar turning idea, who knows. Lot of people have a failure flip side also for that. But people who constantly try and work towards ideating something very meaningful for the people, definitely they get a success. That's unpredictability factor which cannot be metricated using a management studies or which cannot be metricated using a software or something. It comes out of our brain on lot of inventions in the world. Like let's say the bulb, let's say the big, big innovations like let's say aircraft which was did by da Vinci. It was all taken from some inspiration and it was all coming from that inspiration. And that's called unpredictability. People were able to do that and that's why their value proposition is very high. And the 14th reason, what I could say is designers really learn fast because the learning is more, the earning will be more. Okay, the more faster you learn, the more faster you will fail quickly in your product development lifecycle and the faster you will be able to deliver a product. You know guys, if design thinking was not there, if designers was not there, the product life cycle system would go on like many, many, many multifolds times higher in terms of cost, in terms of human effort, in terms of timeline. So design thinking and design thinkers are having a significant value in an organization by failing fast, by iterating fast, by evolving a greater products and making the revenues very, very, very, very fast coming back to the company. And that's exactly, exactly the reason why you're directly paid more guys. See to put everything short, let me very crisp and short tell you, the bigger you solve the problem, the bigger you will get paid. There is no golden blood, guys. It's a very simple point. The bigger your passion is, the bigger your problem is. The bigger if you solve that, you will get a bigger money. That's it. Rest is just a. What do you call other reasons guys. Okay, see you can in this podcast I've covered you a Lot more things like let's say designers had a huge value proposition, return on investment is very high. Particularly you think about the example of a gardener and supervisor. Think about how design is emotion is with a current trend now and understand why design thinking and the value could be equated in the organization. Why designers are paid is because of the effective communication. They don't do a mundane jobs. They exhibit a special creative touch which AI cannot do. They have a very good collaborative nature and design studios inherently exhibit that. Design investments are very low and you are really different from the way in which other people learn curriculum and your ideas are very unpredictable and your failure rates is very faster so that your success rate will be very quicker as well. So this is the following reason guys and to end this podcast, let me tell you the bigger problem you solve, the bigger money you will be paid.
