If you are someone who is looking at internship as a waste of time or do I really have to do internship, is it really worth. Or if you're already in an internship, if you're still wondering whether it's a right choice, then I'm going to tell you. There are 15 advantages being a design intern if you're starting up your career. Listen to this podcast and you will have a lot of value. The very first thing I would say is the learning opportunity is more particularly if you are a intern. If you wanted to compare the learning which is happening for a normal designer and you, it is exorbitantly high. I'll tell you why. Okay. You can find lot of good projects which is starting from the scratch. Unlike a project which will be deployed in between many times, there is a chance that you will start from a scratch based project. So your learning will be exorbitantly high, right? Compared to an employee who's been working in years of time in a different project. Second is you can fulfill all your insecurities like going back and forth this, that. So you can whether find out this design field is really good for you or not.
Okay?
See a lot of people after coming to this field after 1, 2, 3 years, they think that this is not for them. They really regret a lot. So internship is a good chance and an advantage wherein you can find out whether this is the right field for you taking the right decision, your right passion is invested in the right time so that you can still go back to your old profession or any other new profession you want. That's a good thing, right? So you can fulfill your insecurities by going back and forth. Third important thing is you get to see the low and high level people. See there is no barrier if you are an intern. No, you will go and talk with all the different cross functional teams. Your interaction will be huge. There is no job loss fear because any which way you will be completing your internship in six months or four months or something, right? So that barrier is broke. So the good chance that you can build a very good network inside your organization. Either it's with a small studio or a big design studios and all.
Okay.
The fourth is you can have a chance of pitching your project as a great opportunity. Like let's say if you have a good idea, you will not have any fear or something hiding like a superior manager, just that to pitch your ideas. Because any which ways you're not going to be a what you call a full time employee, right? Not right now. I'm saying maybe in the future, maybe the way in which you pitch, they may like your work, they may like your perspective, they may like your understanding. So who knows, you may be selected as a very good full time opportunity guy after a point of time. Many times I've heard from students, guys. One of my students, she joined in a Delhi based studio. She was very skeptical while she started her career as an internship. Okay. After three to four months she's been converted to a full time job earning 7.5 lpa. So the point is you will be definitely turned up, guys. The way in which you put your attitude and effort matters, okay? So the chances of you pitching for a great opportunity will be good compared to any employee who is working in an organization. Fifth advantage is you will have a lot of track and accountability, guys. Because you will be definitely asked for a person to be hold accountable for. And you will be reviewing the projects with them. You will be getting to know what's the requirement of the industry so that your long term effort is whatever you're working will be served in a much deeper way. A lot of people don't understand this. Being an intern is good that somebody is watching you and guiding you so that you complete your project instead of an employee. You know what, the employee takes typically a lot of time to complete a work. Sometimes the accountability will be missing. Sometimes he will not take a interest or motivation to do it. But in an internship you will have a lot of accountability because people will be watching you and you will be completing the thing. Even though it takes years of time, but you will be completing it in a month. If in an internship project, okay, the sixth is you will have a good certification, guys. Whether it's a free or paid internship, that doesn't matter, you will get a certification. You know what guys, sitting ideally in the home is waste. At least if you come for a free internship, it's good that you're getting a certificate after that and you can build your good network and contact. And you can get a letter of recommendation as well from your managers, senior managers. Sometimes you'll be talking with operation directors, big, big guys, okay? So it's very easy to get them letter of recommendation through which you can apply with your certification for further interviews and jobs. See how it is really vital. Imagine if you're sitting in home, will that be possible? So the cost of getting the certificate or degree is very, very high in outside. So it's good that you are getting selected an internship whether it's free or paid. That's not a problem.
Okay?
The Sixth advantage. The seventh advantage is it is very easy to gain trust, guys. Okay? So start your career instead of just wasting your time too much on whether internship is good, bad, don't delve all these topics, just start, start, start. So that you will get a much more comprehensive understanding, okay? So that the more you weigh in, trust your career will be moved forward in a more extensive way so that you can be converted as a full time guy very easily. So trust is a major factor which lot of people are concerned when they are making you as a full time guy in the initial stages rather than taking you as an intern and then converting into a full time. Recently one of my student got selected and they said initially that it will take one year for you to get full time. But you know what? After the very first week he joined the office. So he was told that if you're performing good, you don't have to wait for a year. We'll convert you before that. See, so it is possible, guys, the way in which you channelize your energy and your effort and your value, your success matters.
Okay?
So the eighth important strategy is you can quote this particular project in your portfolio. See, you cannot quote your free projects or whatever you're doing in your home, right? You can definitely count it as an experience. You can count it as a good project, you can share it like an industry project. Make sure you mask all the confidential details, but you can save it and you can show it, right? See guys, so how you say this matters. People who don't know how to project themselves, even though if you have industry project, if you're not telling it properly, you will be not valued.
Okay?
But even though it's an internship project, the way in which you project that as an industry project, which has added significant value in the overall value chain by the design change what you made. This is going to add a great component of experience in your overall portfolio. Ninth is, let me tell you guys, internship are the guys who are very free to explore different topics, who are very free to explore different radical ideas. I'll tell you a real time example, okay? In. In Apple there used to be a culture called if any intern is there in the company, there is to wear a colorful badge. Okay? Badge or some kind of a. What do you call my ID card They have. So anybody starting from Steve Jobs, this was there in the Steve Jobs period. Okay. I don't know whether it's there currently, but I've read it in his book. So any, anyone from CEO to low level people can recognize who is intern okay, so once Steve Jobs was traveling in the lift, two, three people were there. And you know what happens? I'll tell you another story. If Steve Jobs is randomly walking in the steps or if he's walking, if he's going in the elevator or lift or something, he'll ask some question for the people around him, what they're doing. If he's not satisfied by the time the second floor comes or third floor comes, Steve Jobs will ask that person that you are fired. You're going out of my organization right now. Call the hr. You're leaving right now. So in instant moment, he'll take decision and he'll throw out people like that. So that's why people are very scared while interacting with Steve Jobs. He is like that decision making guy. Okay, so there was one intern who was traveling with Steve Jobs at that time. And then he asked, Steve Jobs asked, hey, you're an intern. Okay, so what did you do in your project? He was excited to ask. So this guy, intern guy said, Steve, I made a small icon which is like what you call it will pop up when you're scrolling your Mac Windows Mac screen. Okay, so this is like a feature which can showcase what icons, what applications is currently open.
Okay.
And what applications are yet to open. What are the frequent applications opened and how it can be showed. Okay, so this guy was, I didn't understand. Can you tell me this again? Okay, so he said, Steve, if you're opening the Mac screen, you will get a great effect which is like a boom effect. Okay, so that is like, like let's say, have you ever seen in MacBook, like if you scroll down the mouse in the bottom or if you move your mouse in the bottom, the icons will pop up like anything that will be like a pages. Okay. That will come. The more closer you keep the icon, the bigger one it will come and the next one will be little smaller, the next one will be very, very smaller and it will be like a order.
Okay.
It's, it's actually a very good graphical effort effect which clearly communicates the interface that which app is open, which app is frequently used. So Steve Jobs kind of like this idea. Oh, this is really good. Instead of having a list of icons which is put in the desktop screen, why don't we keep our desktop clean? We'll add these icons in the bottom. Like let's say if you have used itunes, if you used Notepad or icon app, if you used Excel app, if you used browser app, everything will be bottomed up. The moment when you bring that mouse near you, automatically it will pop up, it will grow into a magical effect. It's actually called magical effect in Apple settings. People, people are using Mac will recognize this, okay? You can YouTube it. You will also see that effect. So Steve Job was like this is really a great idea. Why don't we use it in a graphical way? Immediately he brought this guy to the graphics team, interface team and then that idea was implemented. Till now it's been more than 20 years. Every Mac in this world has that feature. Okay, so this idea was brought from an intern, See, imagine if he is not interned. Maybe the way in which the idea came up would be different. Maybe the way in which Steve Jobs would have seen this may be different. So the radicalness what people are bringing is very different. So think of that guys. It's huge advantage if you are an intern, particularly working in a studio like that.
Okay?
So tenth important thing is you will have a lot of tools, guys. See free. You can't get all the paid tools like Adobe this, that and all right, you'll get a laptop, you'll get a team, you'll get a resource which is not possible in your home, in your home setting. So utilize that resources whenever you are an internal, which is very costly when you're doing it alone. Okay? 11th advantage is you will have a very strict deliverables happening in four to six months, guys. You will have very less holidays, you will have very less timeline to deliver. That will force your system in order to create a very good product in a very shorter span of time which will add a great impact in your portfolio. Let me give you my example guys. I did a project which is worth of one to two years in just six months. Because you will be really motivated to do. You will be disciplined, you will be more honest. So don't waste time here and there. If you wanted to waste time any which way, if you go to any field, you will waste time. But think about it. If you're having that internship as a stipulated period of four to six months, you will have a discipline to deliver a project. So don't take holidays. Even if your holidays is not there. It's a great advantage. So being an intern, it's a good thing which you can focus on, okay? A self discipline thing. Twelveth advantages. You can show your brand of the company what you worked as a more enlightening way. See, if you're working in Airbus, Indigo, Boeing, like let's say Rolls Royce or maybe any company like hcl, tcs, this, that. So that is like A big brand, right? So showcase that. See, it's very good to. It's very easy to join as an intern in these companies. Also they normally accept that this adds a great portfolio and great brand name in your profile.
Okay?
So use that to your advantage. 13th important thing is you will have a lot of network guys. Definitely you will have a lot of conversation later. Also you can get in touch with them and you can talk to different people to get connected so that you can get referrals, you can get a full time conversion. You can do lot more things, guys. 14th advantage is sometimes your mistakes are ignored because you are in an internship, right? So you can be less fear of judgment guy. So that your mistakes are not very very well considered and you will not be taken fired or you'll be not taken big action. Fifteenth thing is you learn by doing it guys. Instead of just learning theory in your house, sitting and waiting for a full time design role which I'll get it in my dream, which will. Which will never happen if you're not putting right efforts. It's good to start off with as an intern. Okay, so what will happen is you will be learning by doing. Because design cannot be learned over theory. It can only be learnt in activity. And internship is a good way to start it. Okay, so this is the 15 advantages guys. Let me recap you fast. So learning opportunity will be more and you can fulfill your insecurities by going back and forth to make sure design is good for you or not. And you can get to see low and high level people interact with cross functional teams. Fourth is chances of pitching as a full time opportunity and great opportunity. Fifth is more accountability will be there. Sixth is you will get a certification and letter of recommendation. Seventh is you will gain trust faster compared to any other people. Eighth is you will have a good project to showcase in your portfolio. Ninth is bringing radical ideas like what Steve Jobs encouraged. Tenth is having a hands on thing on the software and resources you can use it. 11th is you will have a stricter delivery time which will make you disciplined and honesty. 12th is you can use that brand line, brand guide, brand branding thing as a company and you can showcase in your portfolio. 13, you will have much more good network. 14th is your mistakes are ignored sometimes. And 15th is you will learn by doing on your own in the industry.
