A recruiter explains what she looks for in fresh product design hires: a solid portfolio, genuine eagerness to learn, knowledge of the company you're applying to, and the ability to start right away. She also covers how to build trust and stand out from other candidates.
In this podcast I'm going to tell you 5 expectation of a recruiter. If you are a fresher in product design role particularly there are misconception also which people think that's an expectation. And let me clear out that as well in this podcast. So what are all the expectations? If you are really a fresher and you are applying for a lot of jobs and you, you might be wondering what is the expectation? What is the real need of a recruiter? Right? See, there are only five easy elements. The very first thing is you need to have a good resume and a flashing portfolio. Okay? If you really want to structure your portfolio, I've recorded lot many podcasts before you can go and do that. Let me tell you guys, it's needless to showcase your skills like tools this, that and all because when people are seeing your portfolio, they'll understand what you've got, okay? So that's why a decent project with one or two good projects in your portfolio is as good as enough. You don't have to worry much about it. If you're a fresher, they know that your level could be like this, okay? So don't get worried about this. The second expectation is your willingness to learn and adopt to new things. Because if you are a fresher, you need to really shift a mindset to come into a company to work. Let's say if it's a corporate, if it's a startup, if it's an mnc, there are different kind of expectations for a recruiter needs to be there because your synchronicity into coming up and taking up the role very crucial for them. A lot of people face a big problem, so you need to deliberately demonstrate the skill. Okay? I am a guy who really adopts to situation and you can tell a real time situation how recruiters can really believe that you are a guy who can adapt. Because if you tell I am a good guy, I am a bad guy, I am a Hondas guy, nobody believes tell an instance in your life which really proves that so that automatically they'll know you are that person. Okay? So the third important thing is you need to build the trust. They really expect the trust, okay, in terms of how do you maintain the confidentiality of the company and how do you really design components based on the company's data and how do you really protect that and how do you really not share outside and how do you really take responsibility in taking up the project and do it so that trust you need to build quickly, okay? If some technical person is coming in design Definitely they'll, they'll trust you in terms of technical skills. Okay? Like you need to make them trust in terms of like let's say product design thinking. What is mean by design thinking and how do you really approach a project, how do you approach a process and how do you really start end to end of a project? You have to explain them. Then only they'll get the trust that you are capable of doing. Okay? HRS will not normally expect that but technical hrs like let's say a design recruitment, HR designer is coming. They expect this thing. So you need to deliberately show this. Okay? The fourth important expectation is your willingness to join immediately. Let's say if you have some notice period. If you are interning somewhere, if you're a fresher, if you're interning somewhere, make sure when you're attending the fresher interview you should join immediately with that mindset. Okay? Make sure your location is also favorable. Or you deliberately tell I can shift to Bangalore, I can shift to Delhi, I can shift to Chennai, no problem. And you need to also tell I'm ready to relocate to any part of India. Because this is an important expectation for a recruiter from a fresher. Guys, people don't get this. They make only portfolio, portfolio, portfolio, that's okay. But these are all the other things which if you say even if your portfolio is little bit missing here and there, they'll accept you. Okay? And the fifth important thing is relevancy and knowledge about this company. At least some knowledge should be there for you. People really expect this and people really trust you based on that and they give you opportunity for that. And the sixth additional important expectation is guys, this is very important. You need to demonstrate high level of energy. You need to show that you are very, very, very, very interested and enthusiastic to join this company. That is the single most important quality out of everything which gets you hired as a fresher. Lot of people think, you know, I need to speak a lot of super English. No, absolutely wrong. I need to have a big flashing portfolio, high end level. No, absolutely bs. I need to have a huge experience. Of course they are recruiting for fresher. Why would they need experience? You need to understand this. Hey, I need lot of skills in Figma, Adobe xt. I need to have a lot of tools knowledge. No, you need to showcase a very good project which you are good at mastering in one skill, one tool. Maybe Figma or Adobe xd. Just one thing. If you basically able to show your visualization, show your concept, show your idea and thought process that is as much as enough. Guys, even if your sketch shows that real good designers and a design studio really don't expect that, they expect your thinking process to be shown. That is why for a technical person comes in interview, you need to show your thinking process. That's what they expect. And you may be thinking, hey, they expect some salary expectation. No guys, they know you're a fresher. They know how much to give for the freshers. So I told you four misconceptions. No big communication skills required. No big flashy portfolio is required. No big tools, knowledge, this, that and all is expected. No big salaries is expected. All these things are misconceptions. You itself imagine in your mind that this is expected. No, the point is the 5 expectation. What I told you in the first is important resume and your portfolio learning attitude and willingness to open and learn. Building your trust in terms of technical skills in company, able to join immediately in any location, relocate and high level of energy and knowledge and relevance about this company. This is a bare minimum expectation of a fresher. Okay, what are the additional things which they don't expect but if you give it will be a great value add. Okay, because I need to tell you that as well. You need to show some good networking contact in that company. You should show some research done about the company and you should have really understood how the company really works and you can quote some of the people who have given you good feedback about that company. That's why networking is important. Second is show your long term goals and thinking about your future. Five years, what you want to become, 10 years, what you wanted to become. People will really expect and people really respect that. Okay, third important thing is research more about the company, what issue they are facing and do a one or two days good project and showcase them. That's a great surprise for them. Of course they are not expecting but if you show, it will be a great impact for you. Okay, so you can do. You can listen to one of my podcast, how you can structure a project in one day. How you can show a project in two days to a company. You can listen to that podcast and you can do that. Okay, and the fourth important thing is you can storify. You can create a good story in explaining your project, you can create a good story in explaining about yourself. Tell about yourself is the very first question you will get right. So you can storify it because the more story you tell, people will like you. The fifth important thing is you can have a lot of questions to ask them. Okay, don't ask unnecessary question. Ask simple good question. When I'll be joining? What are the kind of projects you have in next two, three years? So which team I'll be joining? So do you encourage training programs? Do you encourage sports activities? What kind of entertainment you have in the company? And what are the work timing? Will Saturday, Sunday be working? And how much time I'll be spending in creativity activity every single day? Because I'm a designer, I need to ask this. So this kind of a question will make you very important and interested person and they'll be taking you for that. Okay. Even if you're not following this, at least follow the bare minimum expectation. What I told See you in another episode. Thank you so much, guys. Take care. Bye. Bye.
