Jagadeesh P explains six advantages fresh designers have over experienced ones: foundational knowledge, fresh perspectives, lower salary expectations, better cross-functional interaction, moldability, and versatility in changing environments.
I have no experience in design. I'm coming from a different background. I'm just a student. How do I really earn lot of salaries and how do I really go into a good position in design? Because every designer who is experienced is having a lot of salaries and they're having a great designation. How do I really crack that? One of the major pain points with students and also with experienced professionals who are coming from a different background who wanted to learn design and particularly people who are aspiring and learning design phase. Three categories of people ask me this question and they are stuck. They're not able to move forward with their own thinking of that. This particular podcast is going to tell you having a no experience in designer and if you're a fresher, you have greater chance of taking over the experienced designers. You might be surprised how, right? Yes. So there are six different advantages you can take out of experienced designers. Having talked to lot of people, like thousands and thousands of students, I found out this. Guys. Okay, so stay tuned into this podcast. Take a lot of notes. You are going to learn a different perspective. A ulta perspective. Okay, you might be stuck with that thought. Okay, let's now dive into the topic. Guys, welcome, welcome. This is Jagdish. Thank you for staying tuned with me in Design for Change podcast and thank you for subscribing me. Yes, guys, so today we are going to understand why is this perspective very common, right? Hey Jagdish, I have been told being a fresher, I will not get more salary. Hey Jagdish, I have been told by recruiters like you have only a fresher will give you 25,000 or 30,000amonth, right? I've been told by my juniors and seniors and my experienced designers and I've read, I've heard in audios and youtubes and have you ever experienced personally? Guys, if you are even experiencing personally, that's not correct. There are different advantages which you can take being a fresher. If you really listen to this podcast and reflect on this, you will know why it is very, very different. See guys, design is a dynamic field. If you take out that, this itself is going to give you the clarity. First of all, dynamism means you can win over anybody, any experienced guy, any salary guy, or even a CEO or a vice president. By your one good thought, by your one good idea, by your one good way of implementing that, that could flip your entire company. Right? So design is a dynamic field. So you should not be having this thought. I don't have any experience. How will I get more Salary. It's absolutely not correct. Okay, so the first element, what you're going to see, the first advantage I would see is from the scratch to the deep, you will have a chance to go, guys, I'll tell you what, when you're beginning your journey as a designer, you get a chance to go into the scratch of the project to a higher level. Okay, Jagdish, how does it going to add value in my career? Let me tell you guys. See guys, it's easy to get tempted and go into the final solution to show how you're showing the final product or portfolio or your case study or everything. But when you're immersing yourself into the project and if you're learning the skills deeply, you have a greater clarity in fundamentals. When you project that properly, you get to match with some of the big experienced designer, which they might have really faced a lot of problems with them in their understanding, which they don't have properly. So that clarity, you know, you won't get this after becoming a designer and you will be focusing on some narrower topic and narrower domain or narrower expertise which you'll be going on. But this is a very good stage. Being a fresher, you can project that fundamentals. I tell you guys, it's a personal story I've seen with thousands of students reflecting that they reject that they just put only the final things. So from the scratch, if you're good in fundamentals, showcase that you have a greater advantage over the experienced guys. Even experienced designers, you know, sometimes they come back to basics to learn. They already regret that. So use that as an advantage to showcase to recruiters. The second advantage, what you have is seekers. You will bring a new perspective. Being a fresher, you are not biased to any design. A lot of people have lot of experiences, okay, but they'll be biased. If you are coming from a different background. Again, you will add a greater perspective. You will be not biased. You will be like seeing fresh perspectives. You will be not preconceived. This is a fresh perspective. Why design studios normally recruit youngsters. You know, it's exactly ulta. You might be wondering, hey, design studios don't recruit freshers. No, guys, that's not true. Design studios in fact recruit freshers because they want experience. You see, they want a different perspective people rather than experienced people. Can I tell you something? A fact information. BMW does not recruit for their design studio beyond particular age. Yeah, you can start your career and you can become an experienced designer over there. But I came to know from a very trustable Source that BMW does not take particularly for that internship or any position beyond age of 27 or 28. I don't know 30. Even NID where I studied, they don't pick beyond 30 age. Because the more experience you become, the bias you will become. It's very difficult for you to unlearn and become creative. See, guys, how much experience, how much advantage you have being a fresher. Show that, take that as a challenge and showcase that particular thing to get a greater advantage. See, you're already a creative guy. If you have understood what I said. Now, the third important advantage what you have is you are very competitive in giving salary. You are very competitive priced guy. See, experienced guy will be demonstrated asking like I give me 15 LPA, 20 LPA. But relatively you have a greater advantage. HRS will price you accordingly, right? Because every company is also majorly dependent on budget and how they can allocate your salaries and how much value you can bring into that particular salary range. End of the day, that matters. If you would have understood this clearly. It's a game of how much value you add, how much business you bring in, how much salary is going to be depend on that, right? So take that as an advantage. You can tell, hey, even a 15 LPA guy who delivers this kind of a concepts and implement it and make a final prototype. You are getting it done from a 6 LPA guy. You are getting it done from a 10 LPA guy. Why don't you give me a chance? I'll do that. So you have to project that as an advantage. And also if you show that, people will also nicely take you because they wanted to get the work done with a low salary, right? But that's not the only ending point. I'm going to be turning the tide for you now. After you work for six months and one year dedicatedly showing good amount of projects and good amount of work and impact, now you pitch for higher salaries, right? Because you're adding value. You don't need to feel shy to ask your salary growth. You don't need to feel shy to ask for new projects. You don't need to shy for asking more resources or a bigger team or a bigger project or a bigger salary or a bigger promotion, right? So starting with a low salary and you can go ahead and match and even you can exceed guys. That is the third advantage you being having a fresher. The fourth advantage is you get to interact with different different department guys starting from initial phases, right? If you're experienced, then many doors are blocked for you. If you're. If you're in a mnc, if you're in a startup or like you will be like not given much chance to interact with different people. If you're a fresher, you get. You get a chance to tell. Hey, I'm a fresher. Can you tell about this? Hey, I'm a fresher. Can you tell about this? Testing. Hey, I'm a fresher. Can you tell about the design process? Hey, I'm a fresher. Can you tell about the manufact? People will not hesitate much to share with you. You know what, personally guys, I've seen people who are in organization because of skill had navigated to different countries internally through their organization. During my work in tafe, some of them have gone into Turkey, China. Even I got a chance but I turned up. No, but that kind of a skill is going to give you a greater chance to grow in your organization better. See, navigating across function becomes easier for you. When you are a fresher, you can reflect on this. Even you can quote this same example when you're attending interview like tell you have learned from Jagdish, people will be thinking, okay. You are also thinking in that way. Okay? So the fifth advantage is you are moldable for the organization, right? If you are a fresher, so people will hire you recruiting partners or even the HRS or anybody will prefer a guy with more learning attitude. Showcase that. If you're able to showcase that, you will have a greater advantage compared to an experienced guy. See guys, according to Indian job statistics, organizations are increasingly seeking individuals who are more open to train. Yes, it's very important. How do you adapt for the changing needs? In the world of AI which is taking over a lot of jobs, how do you become moldable? How do you take attractive roles and candidates to really cater the needs? I'll tell you an important thing guys. It's coming from my personal, okay. When I was studying my mechanical engineering, I was getting selected to tafe, okay. Which is for the product development role in campus interview. Being a fresher, I'll tell you guys, I had a history of earlier. Nobody is going to ever hire for a core company when you have a history of our year. That's the rule of tafe. Caterpillar. A lot of big core companies, okay. TAFE is one of the like tire like that's a core company. 90 percentage graded or 90 percentage plus grade will go for that kind of a companies. And I got selected. Even I was shocked. People who are having 90 percentage, they also got selected and they are also shocked. In my batch, all last benches celebrated my victory. All the people resonated with me like hey Jagdish, congrats. Congrats. Even juniors called me like hey Jagdish, you have got a history of arrear. How do you crack that taffy? Nobody's ever cracked in my entire college history. So that becomes important aspect. I'll tell you how I got selected. Okay? I came to know this later through my placement coordinator. So HRS are trying to ask me a lot of questions. They're trying to reject me because I've been crossing all the interview step 1, 2, 3, 4. But my marks are low. But my willingness to learn and the skills what I've demonstrated the technical knowledge towards that domain which I was very much interested. They have recruited me even though they tried to avoided me. But they took me because of that kind of an attitude. This TAFIR HRS have communicated to my placement coordinator and placement coordinator told my friends and I came to know about it. So success favors for the one who are prepared with this attitude. It's very important. Guys, can you relate it to this? Because this is coming from my personal his personal story. So you can think how you can literally crack any big interviews even if you don't have any marks, even if you don't have good projects, even if you don't have any big skills. Right now, mindset is everything. Okay. The sixth point is versatility in changing environment. See guys, lot of people lose their job even they get 10, 20 LPA, 30 LPA in one go. They are out of the company. As a fresher, you don't have that problem. Even if you are a 6 LPA starting, no problem. If you have the mindset to learn and grow, you are more versatile to learn newer things. Sometimes if that design role is having only for UX researchers, you can mold and learn that skill and go for it. Even if you are going for only aesthetics and screen building skills. Yeah, you can go for that slighter visual language skills only if you are making prototypes and checking. Yeah, there are different diversification in design which you can dip deeper and go into your organization based on the current needs and the economic downturns. Because no job and industry is stable now. You need to have a clarity. My skill set is going to make sure my career is stable with that. Even if 100 people they're removing from the organization and only five people they're keeping, you will be among that five. If you have that mindset of versatility in the changing environment Let me tell you guys, personally I have seen a lot of friends and relatives who work only in one industry without any kind of a salary increase or maybe a very negligible salary increase. They will have a lot of problem in their career because 5 to 7 percentage inflation is happening, right? Whether you like it or not, Narendra Modi or whomever is your chief minister, they're going to increase the prices and it's going to happen. They can't do anything. You can't complain anybody. It's going to definitely happen. You need to match that, right? For that you need to learn the skill to cope up that. Every industry is laying off people 1 to 2 percentage whether you like it or not. Even if the economic situation is bad, that will go up to 5 percentage, 4 percentage. But if you have that skill, you will not fall into any of this category, guys. See, being a fresher, you are having that kind of a versatile nature to cater for different needs. I hope you would have understood the six elements. Being a fresher, how you take over experience. Let me recap guys. From the scratch you have a deeper knowledge and the foundationals cleared. You have a new perspective. Second, to bring into your designs. Third is you have a competitive low salary. But you can have a greater advantage over time to get a bigger role and bigger salaries through a process which you are really interested in. Fourth is how you can navigate across functions. Being a designer to get to know about company deeper. If you are becoming a product manager in the future, the fourth point is definitely going to be a great value addition, guys. You will reach more than 3040 LPA in just a span of 23 years if you rightly focus your interpersonal skills and navigating across different functions. Fifth is moldability towards organization. Sixth is even if you're a fresher, you have a versatility to change to different environment needs. Okay? With that being said, you can reflect on these six points, guys, okay? Because this is one of the major pain points which people are stuck. A lot of experienced people don't come to design because of this point. People are still stumbling mumbling here if I wanted to take design or not, I'll see some videos, I'll see some learnings on YouTube, I'll see some blogs, I'll see some pictures. I'll still decide whether it's designed, design is going to be okay or not. After hearing this podcast, you have a confidence that you can clack literally any interviews. Freshers have much to offer even in a field dominated by experienced professional. So embracing this advantage being a fresher, you get to make a greater impact. Okay? So thank you so much guys.
