Jagadeesh P walks through six steps for getting ideas approved and built in corporate teams, design studios, and startups. The focus: clear communication with senior management, gathering feedback early, understanding what actually hurts your users, and showing business value instead of just the design.
It's a very huge task for a designer to really convince cross functional teams like developers, engineers, manufacturers and strategic business decision makers and senior management and plant people and testing people. Right? So in spite of all these things, how do you really make your concepts implementation happening in a real time? It's a very, very difficult task and lot of concepts remain as a concept. In fact 99% of the concepts remain. It's because the communication is not clear and it's because lot many reasons are there. In spite of that, how do you really take it forward? This podcast is going to give you exactly six steps on how you can take your concepts and ideas into real time implementation. Okay, so take a lot of notes, let's jump in. People face a big challenge in really convincing the cross functional team. It's a very, very comment rate and feedback. Okay? And also in this podcast, the six steps, what I'm going to tell you is going to progress from 1 to 2, 3, 4 and 5 and 6. So listen it out very carefully. The very first strategy, how you can communicate, how you can really convince your ideas and to make it into implementation step is making it as a very clear and precise statement, making it as a very precise presentation to be very correct. Okay, so everybody should understand what you're trying to say. Lot of people have a problem in this. In fact, 80 percentage of the designers have a big problem in communicating what they really wanted to tell. You're not really simple, you're not really making it very understandable format. Okay, if it is requires a visualization, show that. If it requires a video, show that. If it requires just a pencil sketch, show that. Whatever is requiredment, make sure that communication is very clear. If it's required in a PPT or an Excel sheet or a data format, please do that. If you are not taking an effort to justify that step, how come you will expect that person to understand? Okay, see there are varying levels of people. Some people will be very sharp, they'll understand once if you show the idea. Some people will need a little explanation. You'll have to explain it with some examples. Some people will not understand anything. They'll be in a very basic level for them. How do you really communicate? How do you make it very simple? How do you really make a 10th or 12th standard student understand what you're trying to say is what your really target should be. If you're able to do that in a very simplistic language, then you are succeeding and making that as an implementable concept. Okay, Definitely guys. If people understand your Concept will be implemented because you have a strong conviction. You have the validation done. You thought through it and then you researched it out, right? Only thing is, you'll have to show, hey, this is what is a real benefit. That's it. People will understand. Okay? Jagdish, they are not understanding. And my testing team, my engineering team, my development team, nobody is understanding it. Okay, now let's go to the second step. If they are still not understanding it, ask them a feedback. What did they understand from your presentation? Ask them the feedback, what else they think is the right solution for that. See, people will come and randomly tell, hey, I didn't like this concept. Hey, mujeko nai pasant naat hai. I didn't really. What do you call comfortably like it? A lot of people come and go like this. Okay, so people have a problem of they want to really criticize. Or maybe some people just wanted to pour in some comments and leave. Or some people don't have any particular or a specific goal for a project. They just come and pour their feedback. So you should filter it out carefully. Those people, that's why you are asking them, hey, tell me what did you understand? Hey, tell me what else you think is a final solution. Because you are not understanding. You are not accepting my solution. You tell what will happen is the moment when you ask this. First thing, they'll run away. Second thing, they'll tell. They'll say, okay, I'll tell tomorrow. No, no, this, that. Or they'll tell something which is not at all achievable. They'll tell something which is totally utopian concept, which is not practical and they also know it. Okay? Third thing is sometimes they may have a good idea also a better idea than ourselves also. So in that case you need to understand what they're saying. You need to empathize with them. Okay? This is the very first step, guys. See guys, if you wanted to really persuade someone or to convince. It's not a correct word, convince. I would say to make them understand first you need to understand their point of view first. That's the very first psychology, simple psychology. Because if you're not understanding them, you cannot win the discussion or you cannot win the point. We are not winning for our personal sake, right? We are. We are making the situation win so that the customer gets the maximum benefit out of the concept. What we are thinking in the table in first place, being a creative designer. So you need to understand them very, very, very carefully by asking them the question, hey, what did you understand by my concept? Tell what you think is the ideal solution. These two questions are very powerful, guys. This will itself solve the problem. And sometimes the other person will also understand what you're trying to say. You can recorrect them. If their understanding is wrong, you can tell them, hey, no, that's not what I meant. I meant this concept to work in this way. Customer will get this. These benefits explain them little clearly in a second level. Okay, on top of this, if they are still not clarified or if they're still not understood or maybe they are not convinced with that. Now take action on what is the real pain point. Like, let's say if the people will be convinced with your ideas and they are saying no, management will say no, no. Already we have tried this, it's not working. Try to understand what is the real pain area and you go and work on it. This is the third important strategy. Nobody does it. That's the big problem. See, you should also empathize with their own pain point and take action towards it. Okay, you can say, hey, can I set a meeting with a shop management so that this pain point can be addressed? Hey, can I talk to this particular vendor in order to check the feasibility of this concept? Hey, can we check with the developer whether this is developable with this particular font and this particular typeface and this particular graphics or this particular screen size? See, if you bring the transparency towards that, people will really understand and accept you. This is the very first important thing. Okay? So taking action on their pain points, not our pain points. Okay, you should understand what is their pain point. If they are saying a particular constraint, understand that and try to take a genuine serious heartful action. Don't just say oh no, no, I'll see it, I'll see it. And then you leave and then you say the backside. Okay? This team is not at all accepting my concept. They're just dumb people. They don't value the creativity. They are just dawn design. They are just coders. All these things are really a bad, bad, bad mindset. Guys, this will pull you back. You should talk in front of a people and you should tell honestly to them if you're not liking their thing or you are to communicate them transparently saying hey, I really did not understand on what perspective you are rejecting this concept. Can I go and understand? Little deeper. You should be more open like this. Going and back mouthing them will trigger a lot of problems in your career. Only it's a very very bad manners. This will make your career go in turns. You will not grow in your corporate Ladder or in your startup studio or wherever you're working, you should tell them honestly, ask them feedback, tell if you're not satisfied. Hey, the way in which you're talking, I'm not really liking it. Can you be little bit specific on explaining me why this concept is not good? I'll be really happy if you do that because I have to improve. See, the way in which I asked now will be really polite. You can find a way to ask them politely. Okay? That's a very, very important thing. And once you're able to do it, then you can go and understand their pain point and action in order to solve it. Genuinely bring the real concern and go and address it. If it requires a discussion with management, do it. If it requires a discussion with the vendor, do it. If it requires a technological support to be explored, explore it. Because we want to make sure our concepts are real time implemented. Right? It's the third important step. The fourth important step is if still they are not accepted. You proved all your ideas, you proved all your actions, you still cleared all your way and and there will be some people who will still not be accepting. Okay, so I'll just recollect what I've said, guys. So first is making it very clear and precise communication simply understandable. If still they are not understanding. Now asking them what do they really understand and asking them what is their way of thinking towards solving the problem and empathizing. And if they are still not understanding and still they are not accepting it, now go on. Addressing their pain point is the third important thing. Okay, go and address their real pain area, what they are stuck on and then helping them to solve it. And if they are still not accepting your concept. Now, fourth important thing is mark a copy to your senior management team or a design team or a senior vice president team in order to code them and send them that this is what you're thinking but you are not getting a clear go ahead to implement it in real time. Okay? Yes. This is a very professional way to do. Instead of going and talking and talking and talking, just reference it out your senior management. Because they'll be more visionary, they'll be more goal oriented, they'll be more customer centric, they will be sales team, marketing team, service team. So all these people will understand, understand. Okay, this is a real need. Yeah, of course customer will require this. We need to solve this problem. Maybe your developer will not accept, maybe your what you call your engineer will not accept, but the reality will be different. That is why you need to reference it with Your senior management, because you have tried all the techniques, nothing is working. Okay. So what happens is guys, there'll be a lot of problems when you do it. That's why you need to do it in a very professional way. You should ask them before sending the email or talking to senior management. Hey, I'm going to bring this point in the next meeting. You have any concerns about this? Because you are saying this concept is not good. You don't want to accept this. You are having some reasons. Let's talk with the senior management and get it sorted. If they say yes or no, either way you need to take it up with them. If they say yes, it's good. You can take it up with them. If they say no, you can ask them. See, you are stuck with some reason. You are not able to take a decision for this. You are also not giving me alternate solution. Then we can ask top management to solve it. I'm going to present this because if I hide something then I'll be in trouble in the management. If you tell that then they will be also be ready and prepared with the data and presentation. Right? See, this is how the concept will be moved. Guys, making your concept move or a good idea move in a corporate or a design studio is hell a lot of difficult. If you're not dealing it with politically strategically correct, you will really get backfired and you will get a lot of ego clashes. Particularly in the field of design, ego clashes are very very prominent and more huge happening. Okay. So that's why senior management, we need to take an understanding. If senior management is not getting the clarity also then you need to go for the fifth step. Understand the pulse of senior management. Understand the business need. Show the real time value proposition. By implementing this concept. How much business revenue can be generated, how much profits can be equated, how much resources can be saved, how much band value can be improved. How much market we can win. So see guys, business needs strategic value proposition discussion. Okay. Your stakeholders need some conviction points. Some flashy graphics, some this implement, simple implementation, implementable font. Or maybe your developer is incapable of what you call putting some program. So he's. He may be just dragging you here and there. But senior management is really sharp. If they see the value proposition, they will invest crores of rupees in your project. They will invest in bringing a new team also in your project to make it happen. But your responsibility is to show your senior management that this is a value proposition. If you're building this concept, we will get 10 percentage higher customer retention rate we will get at least 1 crore in business revenue growth. If you are implementing the small idea and if you are able to prove it very sharply by using proven case studies, by using which is competitors working model, by showing this is a proven sales strategy or proven marketing strategy or proven graphic strategy which is there in the competitor which has already gained the market. So if you are able to implement this then we will also get the clarity and we will also get the business growth. So the moment if you talk like this definitely guys, even if a machine takes a decision it will take yes only. Do you think humans will not take right decision? Because you have shown the value proposition. Your developer will not see the value proposition. Your developer will see the comfort Your manufacturer will see which is comfortable for him to manufacture. Only few people take some efforts to really go off the track and make it the make the unconventional go into a bend the reality and make it happen and implementable and show it to you. Yes we did it. Only few people are really like that. Okay. But majority people will simply say no, not possible. Nothing. No no no. But if you show the value proportion to the senior management by showing the business revenue improvement, profits and the competitive advantage, you are the most successful guy and your concept will be selected. Like anything, this is a very very important thing and people don't do it. People are scared to send email to senior management. People are scared to set up a meeting with senior management. People are scared to talk to top vice president or CEO of their company because they are damn scary. And if you're scary then you should stay in your career like that. But if you really wanted to make your concept implementable in real time. Yes, you need to take the stand. Okay Jagdish, in spite of that my business, my business owner or my CEO or my top management is not accepting now in that case you should really accept the scenario and ask them what is the real pain area if they saying no Jagdish definitely we don't have budgets. In that case you should say clearly. Ok because of budgetary reasons by the senior management we are not going ahead with the concept A. So we are going ahead with the concept B as of now. But once the budget hits immediately we will take the concept A forward do it and you need to sign off a NDA or you need to sign off a email or you need to sign off a meeting minutes of meeting like this and close this. See you are not giving up but you are accepting the real problem in the business and then you are laying your supremacy over the next time when the budget comes, your concept will be implemented. See, nobody is losing here. You are also winning. Management is also winning, right? Because money is a real constraint management is seeing. Then you need to understand that and you need to tell, okay, right now there's a problem. Let's see in the next time, in the next quarter when we are increasing the profits will increase, this feature will win the market. Then management will say, yes, go ahead Jagdish, super. Next quarter will definitely do it. And if financial constraint, if financial people are there, they will also commit with you. Okay, Jagdish, next quarter will give you budgets for this. You can do it. See, that's the sensible way and a professional way to deal with the top management. And you get your concept convinced, guys. See you're not given up. You're convinced your idea. But right now it's not happening. But it's going to happen in the next quarter. So these are all the six steps, guys. Okay? I hope you have got a clarity because if you're working in a startup, if you're working in MSME Studios corporate, this is the best, best important strategies, guys. Okay? The first is make your communication clear. Second is ask them what they understood and ask them the alternate way and empathize with them. Third is take action on their pain points and genuinely solve their problems. Fourth is referencing your senior management and setting up an email or setting up a meeting with them in order to know what is happening in your team and the other team. And fifth is understanding your business pulse and showcasing a real time value proposition for your business. Showing how your concept is improved compared to the competitor and what difference you can make. And sixth is giving up on that particular idea for some real reasons. What your senior management is saying and taking up, taking it up in the future. Okay, if you do all the six steps guys, you'll be really valued as a very quality designer and you'll be valued as a good implementer and you'll be valued as a guy who is a man of honor and honesty who is really persistent towards making his stand clear in order to win the customer, not just win his ego.
