A guide to SCRAMPER, a structured ideation technique that breaks creative thinking into seven components. The speaker walks through how it works using climate change as an example, showing how to systematically generate new ideas for problem-solving.
If you are someone who are really stuck in doing ideation and creativity problems, if you're working on a design industry, then this podcast is going to be very helpful for you because I'm going to tell you seven advantages. Why Scamper method works a lot when it comes to creative ideation. Okay? It's a beautiful overall perspective approach wherein you cannot really deny this method because it covers a lot of addition, deletion and the possibilities of getting very closer to the solution. Okay? So this is not the owner only approach in the world, but this is also greater approach which I've worked on. Okay, so take a lot of notes and let's get into this podcast. So Scamper is a beautiful method which normally works in any industry, guys, if you are working in a creative industry, any design problems could be solved using that, okay? It provides a very systematic and structural approach, I can say, to generate more and variety ideas. Okay? So particularly this guides you in a very specific category of questions and it will prompt you to generate a different dimension of that particular creativity of aspect. Okay? So first let me give you some clarity. What is this camper? This is a creative technique, guys, first of all, okay? To generate different, different ideas and concepts and you can even do it for your process. You can even scrutinize this for your products and services. It could be anything. Okay? It's exactly stands for substitute, combine, adapt, modify, put to another use, eliminate and reverse. Okay? All these starting letters, it represents acronym scamper. S, C A, M, P E R. Okay, let me repeat you Scamper stands for substitute, combine. A for adapt, M for modify, P for put to another use, E for eliminate and reverse. Okay? So it is not a. That's why I already told it's not only one and only method. But this is also a very good approach, okay? It provides a greater versatility, guys. It is a very good tool in terms of ideating in a different direction. So what happens if you are very much stuck? Let's say if you're improving your process, if you're doing a creative writing, it encourages you in a lot more different way, okay? And definitely it encourages your divergent thinking. The moment when you are thinking about like let's say combination, when you're talking about adaptation, when you're talking about modification. So this helps you to diverge, right? So it's a divergent thinking method. So we recently recorded a podcast for the divergent and convergent thinking why it is important in design. You can hear me out that podcast. It will be a greater Depth for you to go in deep into this work. Okay. But the thing is it explores you in a multiple direction. This helps you break away the conventional pattern. Let me tell you guys, it's very simple to use. It's not a very difficult thing, okay? So you can take very good example. Like let's say if you wanted to solve a problem of, let's say climate change, okay? Climate change is a very abstract problem. It's a very systemic problem and it requires a lot of multiple other stakeholders as well. But let's say if you're applying scamp for that, okay, if you're, if you're ideating a lot more things, if you're stuck somewhere so you can think about, let's say scamper. Yes. Which is substitute. How do I really substitute for climate change problem? Can I replace this with some other things? Like let's say if too much of glaciers are melting, okay. And the sea levels are rising, that's your problem, okay? I'm just trying to help you out. It's not a prepared example, guys. I'm just giving you in a very raw live experience, okay? Like this thing, okay? So I, I do not know what I'm going to tell you, but let me use this method in a very conscious and live way, okay? So glaciers are melting and sea levels are rising. So how do you apply this camper method? Okay, first is substitute. Instead of melting this ice cube, can I use something else there in order to avoid this melting? Okay, that's one strategy. See, we don't know how it will work. We don't know how much technology will happen, how much cost will be involved, whether it's real time, implementable, not. That's not the point here, okay? We'll have to ideate lot more things if you restrict too much your brain in that direction. I'm telling guys, I'm telling you guys, you won't be able to even generate one idea in that particular point of time. Okay? So the second important aspect, what we have to understand is combination. Combine, okay? So combination is very, very important and it's a beautiful method to really see the problem. Okay? See now the problem is glacier melting, okay? So we don't know what's exactly going to happen. So how do we combine this into a different idea? Like let's say people need a lot of refrigeration to keep their food and everything in a very ice cold region, right? So why don't we use this glacier melting method in order to keep a very good, let's say refrigerators or maybe a very high deep freezers where which can able to store very what you call a very sub minus like -40 -50 degree sub zero temperature controlled medicines and vaccinations and like let's say drugs could be stored. See I'm just using this method in order to combine that. There is no absolute connection between that. But I'm just thinking, okay, third is adapt. A for adapt. So how do I adapt this method? Like let's say if glaciers are melting, if the water level is increasing. So why don't I use a method? Anyway water is rising, right? I have to adopt this. So how do I adapt this? So why don't I create a method in order to take this excess water and try to treat it in a very scientific way so that the sea water it gets into becoming a pure drinking water. See I'm just adapting this guys. I'm not modifying anything. So I'm just adapting this. See this is what is called design thinking and this is what a scamper will give you different ideas. Okay, the fourth is modify. So how do I modify this? In fact modify will be a very good use of what we discussed earlier. Which is the example of converting seawater into pure water. See a lot of people are not having a proper drinking water in third world countries. So we can able to supply to them with the free of cost. Okay, that's a great advantage of using this. Okay, put to another use. This is the fifth method. So how do you put to another use which stands for P. Okay, like let's say if glaciers are melting, the sea levels are rising. How do you put this into another use? Like let's say if you are able to think about this particular angle. So why don't we use this particular concept in our desert regions? Because in desert it's very humid, right? Like we don't have water there. The humidity is very different and the water scarcity is very, very, very, very, very low. Okay, Very very, what do you call it? Drops of water will be available and that too will be absorbed by some plants like cactus and other desert based vegetation and flora and fauna around it. So what we will do is why don't we, why don't we make a technology in order to transfer those particular, what you call the climate change which is happening on the other end of the world and how we can able to relate it here? See here the chemical reaction is different. There the chemical reaction is ulta. Okay, it's exactly opposite, it's a dryness. But here we are getting More excess water. Okay, so what we can do is maybe a desert which is close to, let's say a seashore or maybe if it is next to nearest shore, let's say it may be, I don't know, like it may be 500 kilometers, thousand kilometers. I don't know, it may be even far. But how do you really make this particular situation use it to our advantage? Okay, because we are putting it to another use. So why don't we supply the water here from that particular sea region and let's say if we create a pipeline, the same what we transfer oil and petroleum, right, from Gulf countries and other countries. So why don't we put a pipeline in the sea in order to take all the sea water and create a very good vegetation around that particular desert. Okay, so there are some living organisms which will survive in the sea water and that like they can able to live there. Only thing is the climate will be little different here. But there would be some animals, there would be some plants, there will be some vegetation which can adapt to this desert climate. Also put together a sea water in place. So imagine a desert where you are putting entirely a different, what you call enormous amount of quantity of seawater which can look like a pond, which can look like a bigger pond. And slowly we may encounter a lot of things to change. Guys, see, in reality, I don't know how much it will happen, but we are trying to connect the dots. We are trying to put to another use. Right? See this is called Scamper. No, no, guys, you know what? There is a company called Gigafactory which is by Elon Musk. He is converting all the deserts into a solar generating area. This is exactly a great example I've put to another use. Okay, I've just given you a similar example. But nobody like Elon Musk has did that. Maybe somebody else can do. Okay, maybe you can do after hearing out this idea. See, the point is not about the accuracy of the idea or authenticity of the idea. It's about the idea. That's it. That's what you have to be very cool and very, very flexible. When you're doing ideation using Scamper, you should not be very rigid. If you are becoming rigid, it will not work. You will be, you will be not generating any ideas. Okay, so same you can use, eliminate. How do I eliminate this glacier problem? How do I reverse this? Maybe you can use a chemical reaction to reverse this particular glacier and not melt it. Maybe you can use a scientific apparatus. Maybe you can use a chemical spraying So a lot of things can be done, guys. I'm just giving you an example. But it's, it's, it's really, really workable, guys. See, any problem could be solved. It promotes your creativity. See how much promotion, how much creativity happened now when we thought about desert, when we thought about reusing that particular seawater. So that's what is the thing. Okay, but another advantage, I'll tell you, is team collaboration. So Scamper helps you build lot of brainstorming session. It collectively explores very, very different dimensions, which when you do it in a collective, different environment, it opens up diverse perspective. Let me tell you guys, it stimulates your innovation as a whole. So this leads to solutions like encouraging individuals to think or maybe beyond the obvious or the novel solutions which people will bring. Okay, so let me recap you this, guys. Scamper method gives you a structured approach. It provides you a versatility of ideas. It encourages you particularly to think divergently so that your brain cells start developing to think in that direction. And it's very, very simple and easy to use. It promotes your creativity, improves your team collaboration, and it simulates your innovation. Okay, I hope you've got a value in this podcast because Camper is one of the great method S C A M P E R. I'm just pasting you the description. Also, please do have a try when you're doing your next brainstorming and addition. Okay, so thank you so much, guys. Thank you for listening to this podcast. We'll see you in another episode. Bye bye.
