Jagadeesh P outlines eight steps for designers to balance human creativity with AI tools like ChatGPT. The method covers ideation, validation, and decision-making, emphasizing observation, emotional intelligence, and system-building to solve user problems.
Today, in this day and age, do you think the problem is there with information or is the missing data? Right Today the entire world is flooded with huge amount of data, which is information overload. In spite of that, how do you really think as a designer, how do you really create products and services which can really outbeat anything? Or how do you even even leverage the technology? A lot of people have this question whether to use Chat, GPT or Google or YouTube to validate their research or to improve their research skill and everything. Let me tell you in this podcast I'm going to tell you why it is important for a creative designer to balance it out this thing and deliver a great product and service. Take a lot of notes. Let's jump into this podcast. Welcome to this podcast. Thank you for staying tuning in with Design for Change and we've been releasing lot of episodes recently, guys, and lot of pain points have been addressed. And if you want any particular pain areas which needs to be addressed as a creative designer, you can write about in this podcast. What do you think? Okay, I'll be more than happy to read and do the research and get back to you with the proper information. So let me first tell you in this particular day, the problem is not with the information, okay? Accountability is the big problem with the people. A lot of people don't understand this point. People go into a mode of doing this information, collecting that information. Information overload is definitely there because we are flooded with YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn. All these social media and information are flooded like anything. What students really make a mistake is they don't think before going to any ChatGPT or Google and do the process. The very first thing which they will have to do is think, formulate a process of ideation, formulate a basis of solving the problem before going into the tools to understand how it can help them see, data is there. Google is like a library. You will have to know which book to pick and read and write, right? So ChatGPT is even more specific in that book, what topic exactly you want. It will help you out. So the more specific is becoming terrific. Now we all know that I've already recorded in many of my podcast which I've learned. So the point is information is there. The that's the very first thing. Second is students make mistakes not to understand their brain or their thinking process rather than going into the technology. Third is people don't observe outside. This is a big problem. What designers really have right now, the observation of the outside world got reduced because we've been Distracted with lot many things in our Instagram short reels. Our brain always finds a shortcut to solve a problem. Guys, I'll tell you, this is how we have evolved. You can read a book called Habit, it's by Carl Duhigg. It's a beautiful book actually it's in fact a great book. I would say if you're reading Atomic Habits, I would say this is a father of that book. Like you can read this first and after that you can read Atomic Habits. This is a beautiful book. Okay, so in our, in our brain there is a region which focuses on finding out exactly what are the shortest path to achieve your goal or to do it. If you're driving a car, if you're driving a bike, if you're driving a cycle, you know how you learnt, you know how you are executing it. Always your brain will try to find a shortcut way to achieve that. That's our habit pattern. So same thing. What is happening in our human tendency is to find out a shorter way in order to. In order to get our dependent reduced so that achieve our goal. Our observation and creativity and thinking process is largely dependent on this habit pattern inside our brain. So how do we really understand this? If you really wanted to understand this, try to use your brain often in a more brainstorming ideation sessions in order to bring out the possibilities how we can solve the problem. See the way in which you train your brain, it starts working in that way. Don't go for the shortcut way which always our brain is tending to do. So make yourself little uncomfortable to do it. That is a big area which you will have to have. Okay, fourth is, let me tell you guys in this, in this particular technology we have a machine learning. We have a data structure, we have a AI models which is a chat GPT model. So let me tell you guys, mind is incalculably powerful than all of these technologies. Can I tell you, mind is 30. Subconscious mind is 30,000 times faster than the conscious mind. See, if you put alcohol for a laboratory test, it takes few hours to find out which alcohol you have given and what is the exact chemical composition. Everything. But it takes less than few seconds, I would say three to four seconds for your subconscious mind to find out what this alcohol is. Because that much of incalculably powerful your superconscious mind is your subconscious mind is. So utilize that to your advantage. This is a research proven by one of the psychologists and I've learned it from them 30,000 times our subconscious mind is faster than your conscious Mind the decisions what we are making is more, more faster. Any decision what you're making is it's emotional and your subconscious mind has already designed that, has defined that it's already liking that. That's how people say a particular product is beautiful. Particular product is not beautiful, particular product is super good. So the point here is that, okay, so understand your mind has a beautiful brainer to do it. The fifth important thing I would say is See guys, complete brainer is also not what I'm talking about. Logical activities are definitely there, but you'll have to validate with certain methods also. So form some basis of what you really wanted to understand and then use the technology. See, let me give you some understanding. A study by IBM found that 72% of the creative professionals believe AI will enhance their creativity, not replace them. So people have that understanding. So common intelligence encompasses the skills like critical thinking, problem solving, empathy. They are very essential for understanding your needs. Guys, it designs your usability create emotions. So understand this. So many times I've seen guys during the brainstorming ideation we cannot always rely on AI. Recently we did an activity, it's like a brainstorming activity where we also asked ChatGPT this that to understand information. But the thought process which we brought for that particular idea, it's a confidential project, I cannot reveal. But I'll tell you the process what we followed to brainstorm that was exorbitantly high. We three designers brainstormed for that particular product, particular problem statement and then we came up with 15 different ideas, 50 different use cases to found out that do you think AI can do that? I will be able to do it in that one way. So understand guys see if you ask AI to generate a logo, do you think that is difficult? Do you think that's easy to understand? And all have you used mid journey. So AI has its capabilities, AI has its limitation. You need to understand that. A study published by Nature highlights that AI's ability to generate novel design ideas automate repetitive task. For that kind of a things you can use it out freeing up human designers focus on a mundane tasks can be reduced out by using AI tools. So you can leverage that guys see AI can be powerful tool for generating various ideation explore different possibilities quickly automating the repetitive task, analyzing the user data and insight and provide you the clarity but decision you will have to make. That is the most most powerful thing. Okay, so McKinsey report states that while AI can automate many human tasks, human judgment and creativity remain essential for the success in Various aspect guys. So what it is telling? Emotional intelligence, ethical consideration, originality and innovation. This is very very very very important and interesting guys. Okay, I'm just pasting you the sources of that link also you can read about it. Okay Jagdish, you said you have to use both of these things so how do I really do it? This comes to the sixth point method. If you are doing ideation process, follow these five steps guys. First is think on your own how do you want to solve this problem? Second is go to secondary information like ChatGPT, Google Bard to understand and validate such information and take lot of data and statistics. Third is rethink how it can fit and solve your problem. Fourth is validate that using your primary and secondary information. See again in that fourth validation I am giving you five important step guys. Try to understand from a nature perspective to validate how the solution is fitting out for this context. Imagine how people have solved it before. Use biomimicry technique. Use and understand nature's evolution how it can be solved. Second is understand from your competitors how they have solved it and benchmark it. Third is try to find out some statistics and facts and information and secondary studies which can validate this information. Fourth is ask your seniors, your mentors or your person who is guiding you in order to get the relevance and guidance from them. Because don't think that you will be able to do it alone guys. It's not possible. Always get a very good support and eventually you will get a very good confidence and then you can do your own project in the later stages. And the fifth is do a historical analysis. If 30,000 before this people are having this problem, how would they have solved it? If you use these five methods to validate, you will be able to come up with a great idea. First is nature's biomimetry method evolution. Second is competitor. Third is statistics and facts and studies and information. 4 Fourth is senior guidance and mentorship guidance. Fifth is historical analysis and if you validate this guys, then you can formulate a beautiful solution and then go for testing and ideation. Okay so let me repeat to the method guys. First think on your own. Second, use chat, GPT or any other method to do is. Third is rethink it. Fourth is validated using the five techniques. Fifth is test and iterate it till you get a solution. See this is how you make a thing. See even after you do the six step, still not able to find out what is properly there. Now let me bring you a very important interesting perspective. Even I would say the golden bullet of this thing, guys. Okay, so the seventh important thing is you need to emotionally weigh this in an emotional weighing scale. See, now you got the information, now you got the clarity, now you got the research done. But how do you really take a decision now? Right now, lot of information is there with your customer feedback, your research data, your ideas, your creativity, your wireframes, your concept. Now let me tell you guys intuitively, try to find the connection in the facts and information, what you've seen. Try to understand how close it is to solve the problem of the people. Then use your brain or the chatgpt even more in order to understand how it can exactly go and solve it out. See, this is the intuition part of it. There is no one way to do it. There is no one measure to do it. If you closely look at the solution, if you closely look at the physical feedback from the user in the testing data, if you closely look at the primary, secondary information, what you got, if you closely look at the solution, what you made now, you will be understanding clearly how this can help my users solve their problem. And if you are really convinced now, take it as a solution. If you are not convinced, leave that. Okay? This is how you outweigh the technology, you outweigh your common sense, you outweigh the bad balance, and you exactly strike the balance in order to do it. Okay? See, outweighing technology, outweighing your common sense and balancing both of it will get you more closer to what users are really needing in order to solve the problem. See, end of the day, your objective is to solve the problem, guys. Please understand that. Okay? And the eighth important thing is build a system around it so that people will not fail for it. See, people always fail. But system doesn't fail. Systems work. People fail. That is why having used the AI technology and the common sense and striking out the balance, you will have to build the system in your solution in order for the people to do it subconsciously without making any mistakes. Okay? I hope you would have got the clarity in this. Eight steps, whatever. I told you so. How to balance your emotional, how to balance your technology, how to balance your creativity. And how to make a problem solved for the user in order to build a system, in order to make them not to fail. Even if they think they can fail, they won't be able to do that. Is the power of a designer to build a beautiful system. Have you seen a tool called Zapier? Have you seen a tool called Pably? Go and Google it out. It's a beautiful tool. Which can automate hundreds and hundreds of your everyday task, which hundreds of people are doing it for the industry. And industry is doing a lot of cost cutting by using this system based thinking. So you, if you use this method, guys, technology will be an accelerator for you. Technology will be a great advantage for you and your creativity will be in a great, great support for you to make a great decision. Okay? I hope this podcast would have given you clarity.
