25 Feb 2024 · 16 min
Jagadeesh P walks through nine steps for designing projects that tackle social problems in just 2-3 days. The process covers problem identification, research, prototyping, and pitching, built for designers building portfolios or landing jobs.
If you wanted to deliver a high impactful project which takes care of the social problem which people are predominantly facing and how you can solve using your design skills, that becomes a great project in your portfolio to pitch for high five clients. Even without any aid, you can use this one project to get hired for a big salary growth. Or if you want to join as a fresher in design, this is the right opportunity to showcase your skill. How to do that in exactly eight steps. I'm going to discuss you in this podcast with actionable points. So take a lot of notes, your digital note taker or whatever so that you can implement it in one or two days to start getting results. Let's jump in. The whole intention of me recording this podcast is to help you make a very high impactful project, okay? Because that one project is going to make you get hired in any organization. Remember always, if you have too much of projects in your portfolio, it's not really good. So keep it short, crisp, simple, maybe one or two project which is relevant for that particular company, for that skill set, for that job, role and responsibility will get you hired.
Okay?
So apart from that, I want to keep this intention very clear that you are really going to solve a problem of a society through this project. So you're not only making a portfolio job selection, you're showcasing your problem solving ability which people are facing currently through your design skills. Okay? So the very first step is choose the area in which you want to solve the problem.
Okay?
First is there is a health industry. Second is there is a money making, wealth, kind of a banking and other things.
Okay?
The third is relationships. The fourth is businesses, people who wanted to build small business, high business. And the fifth important thing is carrier, people who wanted to learn, educate, career improvement. The sixth important thing is money management, okay? Financial transactions and all these things. So there are only six areas, guys, if you direct, if you take it directly or indirectly, you will fall in this category, okay? Like either any industry, if you take, it'll either come in business, it will come in wealth, it will come in financial management, it will come in health, it will come in like let's say relationship and career.
Okay?
So think about it. You choose any problem, that's okay. So once if you're choosing that problem, try to redefine it again. There is a very specific way to redefine it. Particularly if you go and listen to my earlier podcast. I've taken much more detail to do it, but to cut it very short, collect very good information, statistics, data and some scientific journal proving that this is a very specific problem for a specific audience, for a specific region, for a specific time. You want to solve for this particular solution what you're offering. If you are making that, then that becomes a redefinition of your problem. Like let's say if you wanted to solve a problem of. Let's say people are getting suicides. Okay, so the, the suicides. No, let's not go for that. Let's go for people who are having domestic violence. Okay, so I'll tell you one statistics which is very shocking. More than terrorists killing people in the last 20 years, people who have died more than in home violence rather than any terrorist attack or something does it sounds really crazy? Yet this is true. You can read a book which is Homo Duous by Ul Novah Harari. It's a very good book where he shares his perspective. Okay, so a lot of domestic violence is increasing. State wise, you can take data, national wise, international wise, you can definitely take no problem. Okay, so if you go to National Informatics center and if you go to let's say National Rural Health Mission, if you go to any government websites in India, you can collect this information. If you with respect to any country, you can find in your own country, what is the statistics relevant to it in real time. Okay, so the moment when you take it, now you know, are you going to target men, women, any region, any particular city, village, district, country? What is their habitats, what is their interest, hobby, passion, their goals and aspirations. So your Persona will be very clear. Then you can able to redefine it. Okay, so do it very properly guys. You'll have to do some research for it. Okay? It takes two to three hours. The third important step is find an industry who is suffering in the same problem.
Okay.
See guys, this is to validate your brief. Maybe if you are taking it this way, like let's say a lot of domestic home violence is happening. So go and find out which industry it is relating to. It is relating to healthcare.
Okay.
A lot of psychologists were working on and lot of government is also taking some initiatives to find out some solution for this. Lot of researchers are also taking care of bringing any solution for this. Or maybe if you can able to find out some relevant materials which industry is really suffering in the same problem? Okay, like let's say there is a. There is a department called Women Empowerment and there is a department called Crime prevention in India.
Okay?
So there is a department called Psycho, what you call psychological and neuroscientific research which is happening in India.
Okay?
Maybe that's a big problem, what they are working on for a longer period of time. You have to go and find it out. Guys, this is the point. So how do I find it? Jagdish, take the data, try to find the source. Definitely you will find some journals and references. Go and put it in Google. And Google Scholar is a very good website to find out some references and materials. And definitely you will find who has written this particular information. Send an email to them, ask them for a real time call or phone call or a message or email. Try to get the very first hand information. This becomes a primary research. It takes three to four hours, guys, not more than that.
Okay?
So try to validate if that is a real problem or you are just assuming that as a problem. That's a very important thing. After you redefine the problem, you will have to validate that. Okay, so the first is finding out the six areas in which you want to solve. Second is doing some research to redefine it. Third is finding out which industry is similarly suffering for it.
Okay?
Fourth is now you have to do lot of work. Now we have to collect information from the primary source, secondary source. If you wanted to talk with stakeholders, direct stakeholders, indirect stakeholders. If you wanted to do lot of quantitative method, you wanted to talk with lot of people to send some surveys and get questions and answered, do it. You wanted to do qualitative talking to few people and get a lot of deep data, do lot more research for the next two, three hours. Okay, after you do the fourth step, now you go for fifth step. Now you got enough idea, stop it. Okay, so don't just keep on dragging. So you can do lifetime of research for this topic, okay? Which is called domestic violence. But that's not the point of this. You'll have to stop after four or five hours maximum put together till this four steps. Now start creating some concepts, develop some ideas, develop some interesting perspectives and try to understand what people have offered. Some people would have delivered some like, let's say application as a solution. Some people would have designed some consulting based solutions. Some people will charge 5,000 rupees for the psychological consulting or they'll have a workshop. They would have written some books about it, they would have had some YouTube channels. So many people have solved it in a different way. Lot of therapists and people are working to solve this problem, right? Understand how they are making people solve this problem. Okay, so now bring lot of ideas and conceptual things from it. Okay, so you're doing brainstorming, you're doing ideation. You're doing benchmarking and then you're redefining your concept and making it robust. Once this is done, then go for the sixth step which is prototyping. Now you can test it and iterate it. Now you can talk to people to really test it fast so that you can know the feedback in real time. Prototyping and testing and you can reiterate on some of the test if it is not done properly. 7th important thing is document it.
Well.
See now comes the very interesting thing. So far you might have known the design process. Now the very important point is document it in a very very excellent format. Either put it in a portfolio, behance, word file, PDF, ppd. That's not the problem. Keep it ready with all formats ready.
Okay.
If you wanted to share it in multiple media. 8th important thing which you will have to do is first find out industries which is really having this kind of problems in their business arena. Like let's say psychological industries, consulting industries, hospitals, wellness industries, any institutes which is offering this kind of program. So find out all the stakeholders who are really looking for this kind of a solution.
Okay?
Try to make an excel sheet of the companies who are really associated to it. Try to take and gather lot more information about them. Who is the founder, who is the person who is responsible for this project? What is the exact communication point of contact for you to talk about this project? Try to gather, gather, gather, gather, gather. Lot of people don't do this.
Okay?
People want to do research in project but nobody is interested to do research about the company which they wanted to work for. So it is very vital to track at least 10 to 15 similar industries which you wanted to work for. Let's say if you are solving a problem of smoking, you wanted to make the people get addiction out of smoking.
Okay.
So find out what is the programs which is there. What are the industries which is offering the solution for addiction killer. Okay go and try to attack them once. If you find this industry, you have to now use the approach called Flirt Court. Attach.
Okay.
Flirt means we flirt, right? With boyfriend, girlfriend. So quote is you have to quote what's your offer or the value proposition and attach it with that. See, Flirt Court is a very important thing. Guys. Whenever you're sending an email, whenever you're talking with people, whenever you're pitching some idea, first always try to flirt to that concept. Like let's say if you're interested, if you're talking with a person, like let's say an Indian government official who's looking for a Low cost toilet solution.
Okay.
Right now in your problem which you are solving, you have solved it through some solution. You are having a very good E toilet which is portable, movable which is low cost and you are able to pitch him. So now tell him very clearly that I've got the solution. And I came to know that your organization has made thousands of toilets spending so much of money and lakhs of people have got benefited because of your E toilets. And I have a very good offer which is a solution which can be even double the cost lower than this. If you are giving me 10 minutes of time for an interview. If you can provide me an internship for the next six months I can able to deliver this as a physical product and offer all the patents and grants with you.
Okay?
See guys, whatever I talk to has two elements. First is flirt flirting. You talked about their company. See you're not bluffing here. Flirting is not bluffing or talking some lies. That's not what I'm trying to understand.
Okay?
This. This particular thing was taught by my mentor who's a psychological guy and he's a designer. I mean he has a versatile knowledge. Okay. He's one of my professor. He really helped me understand this. Whenever you're sending an email or talking or a four or when you're pitching something you will have to use flirt quote attach. First you have to flirt. Second you'll have to quote. Third you'll have to attach your offer. So the first is I flirted about their company. How they made E toilets and made a social impact of 1 lakh people. QUOTE is I put my value proposition like I wanted to solve their problem. I wanted to make it half the cost. That's my quote attach is I'm asking for an internship or a full time job or I wanted 25,000 rupees month or I wanted to work for a one time offer which is 1 lakh rupees or I want to do it as a freelancing for this hourly rate. Whatever you wanted to attach, you attach that.
Okay.
And then you send call to action with your phone number or email. Prepare this format very clearly for the 15 industry which you've choose.
Okay?
8Th important step. The 9th important step which is a golden tip. I would say it's a golden bullet. I would say is make sure you follow it up with them. People take it very lightly, very granted. I'm telling you guys, this is going to change your life. Money lies in follow up. My one of the personality development trainer, he says Jim Rohn money lies in meticulous follow up. People don't know the importance of following up. Big billionaires, big richest people, big sales people. Sales people are the highest paid professional people in the world. You know that, right? It's not designers for sure. It's not engineers, it's not coders, it's not testers. It is the people who are really good salesman. Okay, so salesman's biggest quality is to have a follow up with their customers. Then and only they'll get more sales, more products going to the market. Okay? So the point is you will have to have accountability. You will have to track that information, what you send for that each industries follow it up. Send an email. Hey, I have sent you an email. Why don't you just give a look. Hey, I sent an email to you. Can we have a discussion? Hey, I've sent a. I've sent a message to you. Did you see that? Hey, how about you? I think you're busy in the last week you're not seeing my mail. Can you just see that? Hey, I have sent a good offer and a value proposition for your product service. Why don't you check out that? So once you're able to track it and follow it up then you will have a much more clarity guys. Okay? So along with that you need to do one more thing. Be accountable to whom you are wanted to associate with. Let's say if you're a mentor, if you are my student, I would do that. I'll take up your responsibility, track your excel sheet, track your companies, track your projects and help you out. But if you wanted to join my particular program, you can send an email to dfc designforchangemail.com which is given in the description. Me or my team will help you out in order to get you into this program. And through my program people have got results in less than 90 days. Joining as a fresher in design and people who are joining in this program just three months, they're getting 2x or 3x salary growth which is predominant. Okay, so if you want my mentorship you can send that email. But if you need accountability, try to choose some mentors. Try to choose your best friends or somebody who can be accountable for you until you complete this process without accountability. If you do it guys, you will leave it. Okay, so the important point is track and follow up and have an accountability and completely iterate this nine steps till you reach results, till you get results. Okay, so let me recap you guys. First find a good problem area in the six areas which I've Given you. Second is try to redefine it with the proper data and statistics and information and journals. Third is finding the industry who is really having and suffering from this problem through Instagram, through Facebook, through social media, through their website, validate the same area, okay? And the fourth is doing research deeply in quantitative qualitative method, primary, secondary research and survey or phone call or interview to get more information. Fifth is developing some concepts. Sixth is prototype and reiterating. Seventh is documenting it well in all format. Eighth is flirt, quote, attach and track it in Excel sheet. And ninth, important thing is have a follow up and accountability with your mentors or somebody and iterate this whole process till you get results. Once you're able to do it, guys, I'm telling you, in two days you can develop this project. From third day you can start applying for industries. From fourth or fifth day you will start getting interview calls. In one week you will get a good job for sure. If you are having the design skills. If you don't have the design skills first, go and work on them. That would be a step one. Don't come to this podcast, you can come second, but go and learn the design skills. I would highly, highly suggest you can join my mentorship program where I can teach you all the skills in just 45 days, less than 45 days. And I'll help you get job in less than 90 days for sure. If you are really committed. If you're not committed, even if you take 900 days, I won't be able to get you results.
Okay?
So if you wanted to really take your own step to learn, that's totally fine, no problem. But take action. No matter you join anywhere, it's not a problem. Any program is better than nothing.
Okay?
That's what my mentor says. So take action. Don't just listen to this podcast and just go to your normal work. Take action. Take action. Because if your life really want to change, you need to take action now.
Okay?
Not later, not tomorrow, not after a hour. Take action now so that you will get results. Okay? So comment me in this podcast, what do you thought about this? And I'll give you some free gifts and goodies are particularly you're going to get a design for change T shirt. If you're a selected winner for sure and you'll be getting some free information also from me and one to one session as a 30 minutes clarity session which I don't give a lot of students, you'll be selected, you'll be given and if you find this as a valuable podcast I recommend you to give me five star rating in Apple and Spotify wherever you're listening to Google Podcast and Amazon Podcast and subscribe me for further episodes. Guys, take care. All the best. See you.
