Jagadeesh P explains how the retinoarticular system, which connects vision and movement, helps designers observe better, feel more emotionally connected to their work, and solve problems with stronger intuition.
Foreign for Change. Thank you for staying tuning in with me. I'm really excited to talk to you again in another episode. And this is the 107th episode of Design for Change. And if you're. If you really wanted to listen to my previous episodes, you can listen in Spotify and Apple, you can get subscribed for further episodes. And I've been covering a lot of pain points in design arena for the product designers, for ui, UX designers, and other people as well. And today I'm going to be talking something very important, which is called how, how do you really activate something called retinoarticular system? If you are a designer, if you want to really trigger your curiosity, I mean, I would say curiosity with the creativity and the geniusness inside you, you have to definitely learn what is mean by retinoarticular system. Let's dive into this podcast to learn deeper. Welcome, guys. Welcome, welcome. So what is really retina articular system? I'll tell you a story you can understand better. So recently, I mean, I've tried to book a car, okay, so which is like Maruti Suzuki. So in my house, like I was telling, please watch out, this car, how it is. Can we, can we book this? We had some other options also and we have been having lot of options to really try. The point is the moment when we all decided that this is what we are going to really take, okay, from the next moment, everybody in my house, including me, my father, mother, everybody, they saw more Ertika in the road than before. So how it's possible, previously also there were a lot of Maruti Suzuki cars running, Etika cars running. All the cars are running. But after this particular incident, we tend to say, oh, this is. What is the car which I want to buy? Oh, this is what is the, what do you call the kind of vehicle which I'm going to have? Is it white hair? White look like this, hey. Black look like this, hey. Brown doesn't look good. White is better. So you tend to see more Ertiga cars, I would say. Guys, in just one hour, my mom saw more than 10 cars in Ertiga while she is going in the transport. So previously also it was there. But what happened is she exactly activated the retinoarticular system. So what is this Jagdish? See guys, this is a powerful thing. Okay, so it's a strong memories triggered with an emotion. So how do you really understand it? See guys, I'll tell you very shortly. It's a neural circuit connecting the retina from the thalamus and the cerebrum facilitating the rapid eye movement to attention focus. So when you trigger a signal, like let's say you have a. Like let's say we'll talk even more than a good example. If you tend to see some girl and you remember her face for a long time, the person, boy or girl, whom you really love. So what happens is when you really like them, whomever goes in that side, like let's say boy or girl, you tend to really expect that particular thing should happen. So that is a connection circuit which happens between retina and thalamus and cerebrum which facilitates the rapid eye movement and it makes your attention focus. This is how your visual information and generating that emotional responses will be created. Are you getting it? Okay, so how it is really important jagdish for a designer. It sounds interesting, fine. But how does it really improve for designers and help them? It improves in your four different ways, guys. First, it improves your sharpened observation. See if you really enhance your visual acuity, allowing the your eyes to really detect that subtle changes nuances which is happening and observing it will inspire you a lot. Guys. Previously you were not like that. Previously you are a normal designer, you tend to see this, that. But let's say if you're designing a product, let's say if you're designing a website or an app, you tend to see other websites in a more subtle way, in a more observed way, in a more much detailed way. And then what happens is you will start seeing the beauty and the visual nuances in it. Previously you might have not understood it or you must have just gone through it, right? The next time when you see a poster, let's say next time when you see a website or next time when you see something which is more close to what you're designing currently in your projects, you tend to activate your retina articular system. And this is very vital to activate again and again, guys. Now consciously you know what is mean by that and what is the science behind it. So you can do it then and there very often. Let me tell you guys. Retina articular system increases your eye movement by 30 percentage. It aids in detailing more and recognizing more with your eyes. See guys, being a designer, sharpened observation is the very first quality which you can improve. Second, you can improve emotional connection. So this amplifies the responses. Guys, even previously you must have seen that particular car also. But the emotion is different now, right? The person whom you crossed through is becoming more emotional and the connect is happening more. Previously it was like randomly people Going so they can leverage this specific thing as a designer. And it creates a very memorable and impactful design when you replicate it to your customer. See guys, studies have shown that activating this particularly increases Your emotional response by 15 percentage and increases your driver engagement like it drives the user engagement. What happens if you increase your user engagement? Of course your designs will be really celebrated. Your designs will be really used by your customer a lot. Very, very important point, emotional connection. Third is it enhances your spatial awareness. See whatever we are talking about, it completely narrowed down to only one point. It's making you aware and conscious. That's it. So particularly with respect to space, it improves and aids your visual layouts, proportions, composition, interaction in design. And this improves your spatial arrangement. And you know what? It creates a very good user centric design, guys, inside you how a customer will really interact. When we keep a product like this, when we keep a product like that, when we arrange it in this much of height. Can I tell you something guys? Retina articular system activates. It boosts spatial memory by 20 percentage. Imagine if you are operating at 20% higher brain power. It will lead to a better spatial design decision. A lot of designers really inherently have. Lot of designers have developed it. So now that you know how it is really happening, now we can consciously trigger your ability to see through the things in a more subtle, detailed way and recollect it, right? The last important information is how it can impact designers is problem solving, intuition. See, whatever we are seeing, everything will be connected to solving a problem, right? If you are not solving a problem, nothing happens. We are not making some art stuff and then we are going home. No, that has a different purpose. But right now we are solving a problem for the customer or your business or your clients or somebody, right? So this facilitates your rapid information processing and it recognizes the pattern. It can lead to a very good intuitive problem solving approach, guys. Very innovative. Because the more detail and everything you see, it will improve your pattern recognition speed by 40 percentage. Guys. And it aids in creative leaps and out of box solution. How do people call out of box, out of box, inside box, right? Directly or indirectly people would have activated it. So okay, Jagdish, now I understood 4 advantage, which is it improves sharpened observation. It improves emotional connection, it improves spatial awareness, it improves your problem solving intuition. So how to really activate it? That's the next question. Right? So first thing is visually exploration. Next time when you notice a texture, a color palette, a color or a particular photography or a, or a particular poster or anything or environment Observe it and take photo and go into very, very, very detail. Guys, consciously you can do it. Okay? Because if you are not doing it, then you become a normal person. The second is emotional evocation. So you can intentionally use certain colors and forms to really create that emotion. Okay, this particular incident has happened with orange color. Can we try to use orange in our particular design in a poster or a website to create that same emotion and retrieve it back? Yes, you will get it and you will make the people feel the same way. Right? So this is a real reality, guys. See guys, I'll tell you one example. When we designed a particular safety critical equipment for a medical device once. So what happens is, I mean earlier the design decision was to really create a particular, what you call a particular interaction for that particular product, which is actually not needed. Okay. So I was really thinking like how does the user really operate this? Because it's there in his blind spot. You remember you putting your helmet lock, you can't see the helmet lock, right? You have to do it in a blind spot. So how does the customer really. User really feels this and do it? And I triggered that particular emotion and then I recreated it and then I found that this particular interaction is not required at all. Because this increases lot of confusion for the user and this can be eliminated. See, a good decision came, right? It's because you really activated that particular system. So you have to improve that ability. Guys, next is spatial play. See, you can, you can really experiment with some negative spaces propositions. You can go to some unexpected layouts, architectures, buildings and engage in that spatial possibilities. And you know what guys, rapid brainstorming techniques. You can do mind mappings. You can do very rapid. You can associate with different tapping exercises. You can Google and YouTube about this tapping exercises. There are a lot of tapping exercises which will activate your brain senses. People are really expert in doing this. You can watch some of the good materials and learn it. So these are all the steps which you can activate this. Guys, can I tell you something? In 2020, a study published in Natural Neuroscience in Natural Neuroscience found that activating this significantly improves your creativity scores in design tasks. See guys, what else you need scientifically, it's been proven. So if you are really interested in improving this, please take an action and recollect one incident. What you really had in the previous month or previous year or anytime in your lifetime, which you really was really expecting. And you are very desperate about it. And after that, for a week or a month, you tend to seek that moment, that person, that instance again, and again and again. That means you've already activated the retina articular system and that's what exactly you have to do consciously now to become a excellent designer. You can read Design of Everyday Things book Emotional Design by Don Norman. These are all the books which really talks about this retina articular system and how visual system and emotion systems are very important when it comes to interaction of product with the human and the environment. You can read. So these people have really proven lot many things in there. Okay, so thank you so much guys. I hope you would have got the clarity on what is mean by retina articular system and how to exactly activate it and what are the scientific facts, how it is important for being a creative genius. Okay, so let me know what was your retinoarticular moment when you activated knowingly or unknowingly and write me in this about podcast for the selected users.
