Jagadeesh P breaks down how designers can position themselves as hobbyists, employees, freelancers, or entrepreneurs. He explores the mindset differences between each path, how to solve problems and add value, and why cultural and economic factors in India shape design careers differently.
How do you position yourself as a designer? Whether you're coming from a different background or you are a very good designer already, or design is your hobby or design is your passion, or you're good for freelancing or full time or you want to start up. So how do you really position yourself? There is a big misconception which is revolving around all these areas and people are 80% of the time misguided. They are pulled by their society or friends or somebody. Right. So we have to be clear what we are good at and how we can able to take forward. Today I'm going to be explaining you the five different aspects and element in this podcast to help you how you can position yourself. And also I'll help you how you can take it forward from there and get results. Okay? So thank you staying. Thank you for staying tuning with me in this particular podcast. Guys. This is Design for Change podcast with me, Jagdish. So let's dive into the five elements of becoming a very good designer. Whether it's a hobby, passion job or entrepreneur. Hello guys. Welcome, welcome. So the first point what we are going to discuss is you have to know the difference between entrepreneur and an employee. If you are a designer or if you are starting up your career, I'll tell you. Entrepreneur is one who needs to actually solve a problem. Who has a business, who has a setup, who has a people to work with him to really create a big impact. Right? Employee is something somebody who works for that entrepreneur, who works for that company, who work for that corporate or service industry or anything. So ask your question clearly, insure your mind. Where are you really There. See, there is a misconception from this first point. People who have an entrepreneurship startup, majority of them have a mindset of an employee. They do everything on their own. Starting from designing, starting from hiring people, starting from taking out client meetings, marketing, sales. Then you're not entre ship entrepreneurship, you're still an employee. That employee mindset, you have to leave. I'll go for the other side. If you are an employee, you have to start fulfilling your job requirements. Clearly you should not think about strategy a lot of because when you do that, what happens is you flip flop, you make a jump here and there and end of the day you will not achieve anything. So you'll have to clearly position yourself where you are currently and how you can able to play around in a very creative way. Okay. Because this conception, this clarity is not there. Entrepreneurship versus employee. Okay, I'll tell you another point. What is the difference between entrepreneur and employee in terms of their outcome, you'll say, okay, the impact, what they create. I'll tell you guys, the first is they have a great mindset towards consistently working on something. Employee is the one who works on a project on a payroll. He gets paid for that. Once a contract closes, he moves, he moves for another organization or maybe he's moved out of the organization because of his incompetency or skill or whatever. But entrepreneur is the one who consistently develops. Even though the market falls, even though the market goes up, he will be keeping on innovating on what is required and he will be able to solve the problem. Problem for the people. Okay, the risk taking ability. The second factor. Employee will not be able to take any risk because he is fixed with a salary. He'll be getting that and you'll be getting that on every payroll. But entrepreneurship, you will have to create that business and wealth and the kind of sales and revenues, then only you can pay for your employees. Right? So the risk is really huge. And they have a habit of consistently working together. See, entrepreneurs will have a team, Entrepreneurs will have something like a strategy for the next six months, one year. And then you build it like a habit to continuously work on it. You will not work on ad hoc things. See, that's a huge difference between an employee and a entrepreneur. Employee works on ad hoc. Like some task will be given, he will be doing that, he will be working on the delivering 100%. And if, what if something else comes? What if some different skills comes? So that agility and the habit towards achieving that is definitely a missing factor between an employer and entrepreneurship. See, at any point of time we can develop these skills. But first of all, you need to know where you are right now. So this podcast is exactly going to address you that the fourth is serving and solving problem. This is very important, guys. See, entrepreneur has a serving nature and solving problem. He knows that's where he can able to take the money out of the society. That's where he can make profits out of the market. That's how he can serve the market very well. Without adding any value, solving any problem. You cannot earn money. Entrepreneur definitely knows it. Employee doesn't think about this. See, if you want to become like an entrepreneur also you can just start thinking about these factors. Oh, entrepreneurs take risk. Oh, entrepreneurs have the mindset of solving problem. Oh, entrepreneurs has consistently what you call habit building patterns. They have. They consistently do that investment, they do that creativity, they do that innovation, they do that work in their every day to day life. Okay, yes, this is the second which is mindset. Very important. Third, let me tell you guys, people who work just for money or people who work for adding value, end of the day, if you solve problem only you will be able to add a value. You need to be very clear on that, right? We have told this point, but in a slightly more deeper way. If you are working for something like let's say if you like the art, if you like to do craft, if you like to do sketching, that is called hobby simple. When you try to solve a problem, when you're able to effortlessly do it and when you're trying to help someone with that. Like let's say if you're very good in communication, let's say if you're very good in rendering communication, let's say, okay, you're communicating very good renders and all. If you're able to showcase to your company or your client or your some kind of a person whom you're working for freelance, how I can project your products and service in a beautiful rendered way so that you can attract more clients for your business so that every single day Your profit goes 10,000 rupees to 20,000 rupees high. In just online, organically, if you're able to position yourself, then you are moving into passion and then you're solving a problem. See, your hobby is not just hobby, you're just solving a problem for a business using your rendering skills. It can apply for all the skills you can take for 3D modeling, you can take for UI UX screen building, you can, you can take for research also. You need to solve a problem of somebody and then it creates a value. And if you are able to solve it in a very holistical way without just having the mindset of working, working, working, you will get hugely mindset shift as an entrepreneur. This is the major thing which an employee and an entrepreneur misses, guys, solving a problem. Okay, see the fourth important part is we need to know how we are culturally developed. Also, India is predominantly a service based country. We used to work, but we have a very good thinking pattern and knowledge and creativity. But the kind of usage, what we do is very different. That is what I'm trying to address here. Okay, so if you're able to channelize that to a new starting up new idea, how I can turn my hobby into a passion and how my passion can solve somebody's problem, then you're moving in an excellent direction where you can create a huge impact in your career as well as other people's lives. Like let's say if you are a design startup example, I'm saying you're able to solve problem of a people who are working in IT industries, who have a lot of problem with respect to back pain, who have a problem in sitting posture, who have their health deteriorated because of continuous sitting posture. Let's say if you're designing a problem for that and then you're trying to find out a solution for that problem, then you're really solving a problem for a particular segment. And you are using your creativity to create some applications of a website, some physical chair or a product. You're create. You're trying to create some kind of a Zumba room where people can come and do some exercises where you're great to. Where you're trying to create an experience for them to solve their problem. Like let's say, hey, 30 days, if you come inside my program for how you can really lose weight and become fit being an IT employee, all your back pain, neck pain, everything will go. People will be ready to pay for you. Simple. This is how you become an entrepreneur. This is how you solve a problem. See, you can work for that entrepreneur who has this idea. That's totally fine. See, I'm not saying everybody needs to become entrepreneur. That's everybody's choice. But you need to know how your skill sets and your hobby can really solve. End of the day a problem, your solution should actually really matters a lot. Then and only you will get paid for it more. Then and only you can position yourself. Yes, I'm an excellent freelancer. Yeah, I'm an excellent full time designer. Yeah, I'm an excellent design startup. This is how entrepreneurship comes out of you. Okay, let me tell you guys, 90% of the artists don't get paid well. Okay, now comes the statistics part of it. See, out of 100 percentage people, only 1 percentage people impact out of this design career. Why? Because they solve big problem. Because they care for the needs of the market. Exactly. Even if the market is not able to receive this solution. Maybe you are thinking in future, after two, three years, you will solve this problem. You are designing the solution now. Anything but the impact only 1 percentage people created. 90% of the people who are artists, who are good in glass works, who are good in acrylic painting, who are good in crafting, who are good in textile, who are good in making prototypes, clay, whatever is your design skill or whatever is your expertise, you are really underpaid guys. Because you are not trying to solve a problem. It's okay to be a hobby. It's okay to be a passion, that means that's okay, fine. But if you wanted, if you wanted to get results, if you really wanted to not get frustrated because we have to balance everything, right? In terms of financial, in terms of career growth, in terms of successful, in terms of our family relationship. Everything needs to be balanced. If you spin the wheel correctly, if you're only focused on your hobby for a longer time, I've seen people losing relationship because of that. If you're only focused on hobby, I've seen people going financially broke. I've seen people who got suicidal problems also because of this thing. So that is why this kind of a nature will come into you when you shift your mindset from here. I mean I'm not saying this is bad but some people get this problem of going into extremities of it. It's a slight caution which I'm giving you. Okay. Because if I give you the stat and information only you will be able to get a clarity. Okay? So having discussed these five things, difference between an entrepreneur and employee. Having a mindset of a consistent habit, risk taking ability, who's solving problem and the approach, how the entrepreneur approaches. This is the second aspect. And the third aspect is are you really solving a problem? Are you just working for something? You're not completing anything, you're just working, working, working. And the fourth is India. As we know it's not a service based economy. So I mean it's a service based economy. We are not innovation based economy. Mostly now we can shift that gears and start thinking about how we can solve problems in a very quick from our home. How we can solve a big problem for an industry so that they'll get paid for that profit. Definitely they'll be able to share with you, right? Your value will go up, they'll give more projects, they'll give more freelance, they'll give more responsibility. This is how you also eventually have a startup. The fifth is when your passion solves a problem then you get paid. 90% of the artists don't get paid is because of this. Okay? Everybody's one or the other way artists. So think about and five reflections of what we have discussed this finally I'll tell you one thing. Education is within whatever you are getting educated. Your formal design education or your formal engineering or your, your unformal whatever, you're just joining some course or online program. This, that a lot of things are there, right? Unless until you are not able to find that inner talent and the potential and the skill and the, and the hobby what you wanted to take out of you and solve somebody's problem, you are really not educated properly. The word educate is actually, is actually from within. The meaning of it properly, okay, I think it's a Latin or some, some Greek origin of this word. It's like education is from within. If that within is not coming and then you're only doing some service work, monotonous, using tools and software and all. When is your creativity going to come? When are you going to become really a value added design thinker, Value added design entrepreneur, Value added service provider, solution provider? Trend is changing guys. Entrepreneurship is making a lot of impact compared to the last 10 years before. A lot of startups and MSCs have come. MSMEs have come in Indian government. Lot of policies have been changed for MSMEs, particularly with respect to electric vehicles, particularly with respect to sustainability. More than 20 to 25 percentage of the, what do you call Sachs subsidy has been given for the MSMEs. So why don't you think about that. Try creating an impact through that with your hobby, with your passion and then this becomes a problem. I'll give you one more idea guys. Okay, so I have told about one idea which is education is from within creativity. Second is you can try to find what you're really capable of. See, having heard this podcast, to close this entire podcast, you can think about this. What one problem you solved in your childhood. Maybe you would have solved a problem of your house. Know, some water problem is there maybe in your house, some electricity problem is there maybe in your street. You are at the age of 15 or 16 but you took some steps to go and solve it. Try to understand that pattern, how you solve that, that is first thing which you try to solve a problem using your skill. Even if you don't have skill. Also you developed at that point of time to go and solve it, right? You don't know how to talk to people but because of that problem is really pressing you hard. You go on and find out a way to talk to that guy who is responsible for this electricity and then you make sure electricity comes before end of the day. So try going and understand one childhood incident which has triggered you to think about solving a problem. See guys, mostly that problem and your design career will be most elevated. This is where you find that originality inside you. There are, hey Jagdish, you are saying this much of things. So how should I start here? How should I find out which problem I have to solve? I'll give you the final closing note of this podcast. You can think about Six different areas. Guys See business people have lot of problems. You can think about their way. People who are working in health sector, health related problems. You can go and solve their problems. People are working in carrier related problem, job internship, this, that salary increase, career related problem. Fourth is creativity problem. See people who are in indesign field, majorly creativity field. How you can help people solve creativity problem. Relationship problem. That's an amazing thing. People are broke, people are not having proper partner relationship. And some people are. What do you call parenting is a problem. Some people are having a problem with their kids. So a lot of relationship problems are happening. You can solve that. Fifth sixth is wealth creators. People have money management, financial related applications, financial related products, financial related services. So business, health, relationship, career, creativity and wealth. These are all the six segments which you can really think of. You can seed that thought in you guys. When you're able to do that, you'll be able to solve a problem. When you're able to solve the problem, you really find the inner potential of what you are educated with. And then you move in to become a hobby. You move into becoming a passionate, you move into becoming a design job, full time worker, you go into design entrepreneurship.
