Hello, welcome everybody. Welcome to this another episode with me, Jagdish in Design for Change podcast. Thank you for subscribing my Spotify channel. And today you're going to see if I am designer. Like let's say if I am starting as a designer, whether internship is good for me or directly, can I go for a full time job? Okay, One of the major questions what students ask me and they are confused and sometimes, sometimes students even don't ask. But this is one of the burning pain points which designers community has. Okay, maybe if you have that kind of a clarity, you would not be listening to this podcast. Or maybe you can reaffirm because this particular podcast is going to give you clarity which category you can fall or you are falling in right now. And then you can take decision and action accordingly. Okay, so take a lot of notes. So let's dive in deep into this topic. Okay, so being a designer you might have a confusion always. Am I qualified for an internship or is it a norms that I have to do an internship or should I go for directly a full time job in design? Will somebody give me leave all these things, guys, just follow these three things. You will be able to get a excellent opportunity and a career moving forward. The first is clarify your values in design. Hey Jagdish, what you are saying something offbeat. It's really true, guys. If you're not able to have a clarity on what made you to take this design decision in your career, I'm sure this particular information is not going to add any value for you further moving forward. If you don't have that clarity, then how will you even choose whether you go for internship or full time? So you have to first write about yourself. Why did you choose design? Why is a important question you have to ask yourself because that is where everything starts. You know, after you write about that, then you can go for the second step which is checking your confidence level. Okay? You can't directly go into the step two without writing that. You know, it takes a few minutes guys to think about it. Even as a designer, you can do this cross check. Even if you have a lot of experience, you can do that because it's always a kind of internalization which we can think of. Okay, so when you have written this clearly second, you can check your confidence. Okay, like let's say if you're very confident about your design knowledge or you could have Learned from some YouTube or videos or maybe some books you could have read here and there, talk a lot of people if, if you would have had a good confidence, probably you can go and apply directly for design jobs. There are good design studios across India. There are a lot of small scale design studios and corporates. You can directly go and pitch it, no problem. You're good to go. You're already there and you have a sufficient confidence. Go and hit and come to know what is the feedback from the industry. And if you're not able to get it then go and work on the first point. Okay, this is fine. Maybe if your confidence is medium level, okay, let's say first category is full confidence, go and pitch, no issues. Second is if you have a medium level of confidence, go and check with somebody who are designers in the industry. Okay? It's not that difficult, guys. You can find a lot of LinkedIn Facebook connections too. Make sure you draw attention to the people. And there is a podcast which I'll be recording how you can network with people, how you can break that barrier and go and network. I'll be recording you. So you can use that kind of a hacks to find some good people. Okay? Don't just depend on one person's feedback. Ask at least 10 to 15 people. So you show your works or you maybe you can tell your thought process and you can get a reaffirm confirmation from them that will clarify whether you're ready for internship or full time job. It's actually not one person's feedback, what you really hear, it's multiple people. Okay. Sometimes you'll tell, hey, my cousin is designer. He said I can go for full time job. Don't do that. That's not correct here. My friend said. Your friend, cousins, all these things are fine. But make sure Your population is 15 or 20 people. You ask, then you decide. This itself is a research. Then and only you can come to know what is missing, what not is missing. If they say some feedbacks, you can definitely go and rework on it. If they said, hey Jagdish, you're good to go, go ahead. Superb. Go for the first category and apply it. If you're not having that clarity, if they are also a little bit skeptical, okay. You can work on your presentation skills, you can work on your research skills, you can work on your ideation and ideation and creativity. Or maybe your color skills is bad, your composition and aesthetic skills is bad. Please go and work on it. If you are in a medium level of confidence, okay. And you can also apply for like let's say the third category. Okay. If your confidence is very low, completely low. If you're feeling that As a low, make sure you have followed the first step properly. Maybe that clarity in design will give you which category you wanted to fall in. Many people would not fall in low category. Low confidence guys. People think they have have low confidence. They are good to go only for internship. Do not sabotage your thought and thinking yourself. Make sure you check that clarity in design and then you rate yourself in the confidence of 10. Okay? If this is being still done and then you're in a low category. Now go and apply for internships. See, there are a lot of good places where you can get internship. If you are an intern, make sure you tune your mindset that I'm not working for money, I'm working to learn something. Do not ask for salaries or expect something. Ask them for an opportunity. This is where you have a hedge to go and ask for certain projects you wanted to do. Like let's say if that company is doing a bag kind of a project. Like let's say it's a college bag or laptop bag. Go and ask them, hey, can I design a bag for shopkeepers? Can I bring in a new portfolio for you? Can I do a research? You don't have to pay me anything, but give me your resources and knowledge and whatever things you have. You know what? This is a very good way to pitch in for new ideas. You don't need a resume or a portfolio to tell this guy. You just have to connect with some recruiters. See, there are good platforms like Internshala. Like let's say intern naukri.com LinkedIn, AngelList indeed. Do not worry, I'll be posting this in the comments also. You can watch out, but just listen it out, okay? Indeed. Glassdoors intern hub 2019 so these are all some of the like common places where you can go and apply or you can even ask your own institute where it will. They will give you a lot of clarity. They will give you chance, they'll give you opportunity. So you can start off with them. And once you're getting that particular confidence and then you start working, then you build a good portfolio and go for job. Simple. Okay, so now we'll go for the third category. Even if you're not able to get clarity in these two steps, let me tell you guys, take action with whatever you have, okay? Just go and take action. Take action is you can directly go and pitch for studios and get the answers. Some people will reject you, some people will take you. Okay? Because that kind of a action you need to proceed. Maybe you can do one good project. Okay? See you don't have to take action without anything. You can just do one good project. Hey Jagdish, I'm not a designer yet. Nobody has taught me anything. I don't know anything in design from the scratch. How do I do? Let me tell you. This is from the scratch. Go and take a problem and solve it. This is called scratch in design. There is nothing like a book in design where you go and learn from scratch. Absolutely. If you are in search, you will be in a search for a lifetime. Okay, Take a problem which is pressing around your house, pressing around your society, your street, your community. Go and solve it. Like let's say. Let's take an example. Okay? You don't have to take this. But just a thought I'm giving you. You can take any problem you want. Let's say if you're having a problem of milk, not. What do you call not having a quality milk delivery in your house? Okay. If you are staying in a city or maybe a urban area where you don't find any kind of a cow or farm near your house, right? You will get some processed milk or powdered milk or maybe that, that is having a little compromise in the quality. So how do you solve this problem? It's a big problem, right? Majority of the metropolitan cities face this problem. So as a designer, how do you go and solve it? See, you don't have to be a design thinker to do it. Solve it in your own way. This idea could be crazy. Guys. Be raw, be natural. This is what people see in you. Good designers recruit based on this quality, not based on your fancy screens. If you're thinking that, throw away. I've seen lot of this fancy stuffs and natural stuffs. Who gets really selected? It's always the natural guys, okay? Trust me. And the point is you will be very raw. Make sure you even suggest government for the solution. Make sure you write it. I'll change the ministry, I'll change the education policy, I'll change the milk delivery policy, I'll change the industry norms. It's okay, fine. It need not have to be practical. But you can think of. You can think of delivering a solution through application. Make sure you build some screens and websites and show them you don't need to learn Figma or Adobe xt. You can do it in your ppt, you can do it in your word. Make sure you put some buttons here and there. You don't eat it need not have to look formal at all. But it has to solve a problem. Think in your mind and show it. That's it. You just have to take action and show this particular word file or ppt. Whatever you did to the recruiters, chances are you will get selected. Guys. 50, 50 chances are there. You know what would have happened if you do this third step. Your confidence would have gone to a mid level probably it could have gone to a higher level also. You can just go and pitch for studios itself. People will be happy to take you in. You don't need to have a full time, I mean you don't need to have a project to get hired guys. You just need to have a good idea to just pitch for design studios. Got it? If you are following these three steps, definitely you will be able to put yourself in one category. Whether you're qualified for internship or full time job. It all comes from your clarity in the step one, what I said. And step two is measuring your confidence, low, mid and high level and taking action accordingly. If you're a low, go for internship. If you're mid, ask for feedback from designers and make sure you level up. If you're high, go on pitch. And the third step would be to take action with whatever you have. Do a good project and take action. Right? With these three things, you'll be able to confirm and take your career in design with a good clarity without just telling, hey, nobody gives me job. I'm an intern, I'm qualified for full time. Nobody gives me any kind of an opportunity. It's all just excuses, lame excuses which you are putting on yourself. Remove all the slaps and just take the this action forward, guys. You will be able to see results in just one day. Go and create all an account in internship. Internshala. Let's intern now. Glass doors internal. Just try, start applying. That's it. You'll be feeling happy. First of all, if you take action and then you go and just test the ground and get results, definitely you'll be able to move forward. Don't be in the dead zone. Cross this. If you're not taking action after hearing this podcast, definitely it's not going to have any impact on you. Okay? So I would highly suggest if you've taken notes, it's good, go and implement it and take action. If you still need any kind of a support or guidance, feel free to send an email to me. I'll be happy to help. Or if you wanted my coaching and mentoring to be taken in, I'm taking only few students for my coaching and mentoring guys. If you're interested, you can check that qualifying link. And if you qualify. I'll be taking you in my program to make sure you're getting success. Okay. Or you can test on your own grounds, and you can let me know how these three things have worked out. I'll be more happy to give you some suggestions and feedback also. Okay. So thank you so much, guys. Thank you so much for staying tuned in this podcast for design and change.
