What is the difference between product design and UI UX design? 1 of the major doubts students has and lot of people who wanted to start this design career has this problem. Right? Let me give you a very good clarity on how you can check using these three methods. Okay? I'm going to be explaining you in different perspective of it and then you will get to know what is product design, what is ui, what is ux, and how you can really choose your best area within that. Okay. Because this podcast will also help you to choose which is the one which you want to take it forward from this. Okay? With that being said, now let's start going into the topic. Welcome, guys, welcome, welcome. Thank you for staying tuning in with me in this Design for Change podcast with Jagdish. Thank you so much. So the difference between product designer and UI UX designer, okay, that is what is the big question many students have asked and many students don't know it and they still go for it. Okay, so what is this ui? They're saying user interface, user experience, it should come. Ue only know why it is coming. Ux, what is this product? Let me tell you one thing, guys. You have to first understand the basic difference in the terminology. Okay? The first thing is product design is referred to physical products generally. Okay? It used to have a legacy meaning for it when it comes to chair, table, designing a car, designing a furniture. So everything is actually a physical product, right? So the counterpart is actually something like that. So the second is UI UX design, which is digital interfaces and digital products, and digital services, which is designing a website or app or mobile applications. That's what we tend to use normally in this particular trend. Let me give you another example, guys. People used to call it, but over the time it has evolved. A lot of people are shuffling here and there between physical product design and digital product design. But you need to understand this is how the legacy started. Okay? It's normal to have a confusion, but you have to understand the basics of how the history has started. It started from the physical product design and eventually we moved to the digitalization and got this thing. This is the bad truth and this is the truth which most of the people knows it. Okay, but now I'm going to be explaining you the second important aspect. What people don't know it physically, when what people don't know it beyond it. Okay, let me tell you guys. Whether you are doing a website design or whether you're designing a physical product, you need to actually solve the customer's problem. That is exactly called Product design, I would say UI UX is a part of it. Interface, design, experience, design and creating that particular experience to solve that problem is actually a way to do it. Even without that also it could be done, but it will have a lesser experience, user experience for the customer. You can design only a chair. You can design only a simple product and give. That's as simple as that. Fine, but let me tell you guys, I'll take one example to explain this idea. Okay? See, let's say if you're designing a table, like let's say if you're designing a table, okay, in reality, so if a product company designing a table, they'll only make some table and they'll give you, they'll sell you, okay? Like let's say if you're a product designer, okay, you're not only stopping there, but you're also trying to understand what is the purpose of my user going to use the table. He's going to put the weight on the table and he has to start working in his laptop. He's going to write and do some sketching there. He's going to use it as a dining table. He's going to place his water bottle. So lot many things are coming in. Okay. And with that you can also attach a sensor with your table and you can try to collect data. How much a person typically uses per day of his table, how much hours of time he's spending exactly on laptop, how much spending, how much hours of time he's spending exactly on writing certain things and how much of weight he keeps and what are the kind of table fits in each and every house and what are the kind of, what you call aesthetics that particular person requires. When you are able to take all this data through your table, what you're selling, you try to understand the customer and his expectation and his requirements very deeply. Either you're tracking data from your table, which you have attached sensor for it. So you take, you're tending to take the. How much hours of usage, how much time that particular table is being used. And like you can even go into very subconscious level what kind of a material which is impacting his and what kind of the color and lighting you can give to. Yeah, you can create some LED lights also for your table, which is going to change his mood and ambience. See guys, I'm not just designing table here. I'm just creating an experience of comfortably sitting and working for hours together. Right. For this I need data. Designers and manufacturers have installed some sensors, have installed some electronics to take that Data and feed it in their mobile, feed it in their websites, feed it in their web. So people who are using the table also can use that mobile app to know how much hours they've sat yesterday, how much of weight they have put it on their table and how much of lighting they can change today to increase their mood and am towards working there. See, you are giving liberty for the customer also to work. This is exactly called solving a people's problem and creating a better user experience. See, I've told about digital products also. I've told about physical products also. Let's say if you're designing a chair, if you're sitting in a chair along with the table, you're giving it as an ecosystem, let's say a table and chair. So for the chair you're going to put an electrode sensor. Saying that will calculate your exact weight of your body. That will exactly calculate the body fat in your entire body. That will try to find out what are the abdominal problems you have when you sit for a long time. So that kind of electrode sensor or something that you're putting it inside, then you need a user interface to take and interface that data for. You can't use the access raw data. Guys, we are not in the age of initial coding and programming and all. We are in the age of creating simple, simple applications and interesting interactions using tools, automated tools. You don't need to do any kind of a coding so people can have that liberty to check their data. How much hours they sat? Oh, Yesterday I sat 5 hours without a break. That's not good for my health. Let me go and exercise. Let me go and take a break. So Yesterday I weighing 69kg, today I'm weighing 70kg. 1kg became extra. So some kind of a health awareness or something relating to that product can also add as a value for your customer. You're not only solving the problem of sitting, you're solving the entire overall well being of using your table and chair. Compared to a normal product designer who only sells table or chair, who sells more products, of course, right? So you, you tend to give an experience and people tend to buy more. So this is the major difference between physical product and digital product. I see end of the day, what kind of a role you wanted to play. You can use that, you can find that. See, today experience of mobile web applications is there. What if tomorrow augmented reality comes? What if tomorrow the entire interface changes? What if tomorrow quantum computing comes? AI comes something else comes. Interface and experience will be completely different. Right? That is why you should not be very rigid towards only this ui, UX and other things. You should holistically say I'm a problem solver and a product designer. When you have that understanding clear, then you can redefine yourself properly. This is the second important factor, guys. Third is to tell bluntly what is your favorite strength you need to know. Hey, after knowing this clarity, Jagdish, I wanted to only design physical products here. See, physical products has experience of creating materials, touching and feeling and creating emotions through colors, through finished, through whatever manufacturing and everything. So the physical product is also one such aspect which people tend to like. Good, that's fine. Yeah. After knowing this clarity, you need to draw your line. That's what I told you. This podcast is going to give you an action point further where you can lead to. Okay, second aspect. No, Jagdish, I'm very much interested into creating some interface here. I want to create some visual elements. I want to create some interface elements for my additional product. How to create some website app software. I'll focus on only layout grid system components interact with on a screen and how I can create typeface color theory. Yeah, you can definitely become a UI designer or graphic designer and you can create only the user interface part of it. See, the first is product design. The second is UI design. Third is going to be a UX design which is user experience. See, when you wanted to create an experience for a customer, you need to study his entire journey. You need to understand his emotional response and how he interacts with the product or service consciously and subconsciously, right? Many of the applications we tend to go on, we tend to use unconsciously because we have been habitual to that chatting way, texting way in WhatsApp, Facebook that are not commonly ingrained in us. So we need to understand the pattern and try to create a seamless, user friendly experience considering the overall user flow, how the user wants to flow in that information, how the user wants to navigate in the application to make the successful payment in less than 10 seconds. Right? Payment can be done in 10 seconds. Previously we used to go into stand in the bank and do and wait for what do you call one day or half a day to make the payment. Now we can do it in less than 10 seconds. See, this is called user experience, right? And overall satisfaction. Here you can create wireframes, prototypes, testing, understanding human behavior, psychology, doing some research, iterating, testing. All these factors comes in user experience design. So guys, the third point is very important. Knowing your strength and knowing your weakness and knowing your passion and interest what you wanted to take it forward will give you clarity and the golden tip. And the final tip of this podcast is talk to a lot of designers and ask this question. Not only ask this question, ask them what they're doing in their work, what kind of products they design, what kind of services they design. If you talk to more than 30 people, you will tend to see a pattern, guys, because India has both industries, physical product as well as digital product as well as both combined. So you will tend to find out what is really favorite for you, how and where you can play, and how you can really excel yourself. Okay? That is the exact essence of this podcast. To make sure you choose your favorite interest and then go ahead from there. It's not like, hey, UI UX is fancy. Every everybody's getting 2430 LPA very easily. Hey, this is the most highest paid job. A physical product design is like always legacy. Physical products will not go away from this world. No, both of these things are wrong. I'm not saying wrong, I'm just saying don't be rigid. Be in that flexible and open mindset to create a better experience for my user to solve the problem. And you have to wear both the hats when it is required and learn the skills. As simple as that. Okay, thank you so much guys.
