Jagadeesh P shares five mindset shifts that make recruiters and design studios pursue you instead. He covers self-assessment, building confidence, asking the right questions, researching companies deeply, and following up strategically to land design jobs and internships.
How to make design recruiters and studios run behind you offering jobs and internship rather than you following it up with them, then getting rejected and then asking them, please give me job or internship. And they'll tell you, we'll come back to you, we'll get back to you. We'll, we'll see you later. Your profile is not selected. Thank you for application. Right, so how do you flip this mindset? What are the strategies to do in this podcast? I'm going to go into details guys. Okay, so listen it out. The very first point is, see always don't try to impress somebody. Look for someone who wants you. It's difficult, but I'm saying it's easy to understand, but it's difficult to do it. If you do it in a process, you will get it. Okay? Rather than trying to impress somebody to get your resume, to get your portfolio, to to send out your job application, look for someone who really wants you in your current skill set. Whatever you have. Okay, first thing, the second thing is always rate yourself in a scale of 0 to 10. Let's say if you're a skill of 4 or 5, if you wanted to improve to 8 or 9, that's okay. But current skill in industries also there are many design studios whose ranging from 0 to 10 skills, right? Like let's say Ido Frog and these studios are like 10 scale and some studios will be 9, some studios will be 8, 7, 6 0. If you are in the scale of 5, find out studios in the scale of 5 and try to match make with them. I take a very good two hours masterclass to my students in my program how to do a matchmaking, how to make a job matchmaking. Because it's all about important how you are relevant and how that relevant industry is to you. In order to make a successful job profile to get hired as a designer. It's same like marriage guys, people do a matchmaking, right? But it's very vital because you're going to spend a lot of time of your career in office rather than spending in your home. So it's very, very important. So rate yourself, rate the company, find out and bridge the gap. Okay? And the third important thing is have extraordinary confidence guys. See the moment. If you have a clear goals written, specific, measurable, achievable, relatable, relevant time bound goals, S M A R T. And if you are really imagining that you're already reaching that goal, like let's say one year goal you've set in 2025 and then you're imagining already you are in the 2025 and then you're earning this much of salary being a this much creative designer. How much happy you will be, right? Imagine if you time travel there in 2025 having this much of salary, this much of designer designation, how much confident you will be. With that same confident you need to come to the present and attend this job. Interviews, application process, everything. Guys, this is called end in mind technique. People who write goals, they don't understand this. People who really learn deeply about goals, they know it. I teach my students specifically end in mind technique. Because the moment if you visualize and write your goals in a present tense and think about it every single day, your confidence will exorbitantly go up like anything. And when you apply this guys, recruiters will turn back and coming around you. Okay, so the fourth important thing is power of asking questions. I always tell if you really wanted to make somebody listen to what you're saying and get the who can connect. Always try to ask questions, not in a rude way, in a very polite way. Hey, hi, what's your name? Hey, hi. What are you doing? Hey, hi. Are you a HR or are you a designer? Hey, hi. Can you just tell me about your company organization and your cultural fit? See, these are all the things which they ask you typically. But how about you telling them first? You have to introduce yourself also and you can able to flip them certain questions. See guys, the power of asking questions is a very, very vital psychologically. Our brain will tend to use 75% of its thinking process towards answering a question. The moment when somebody asks you a question, we are subconsciously tuned to answer that you may ask why Jagdish? Because it's a evolutionary trait. We have been seasoned and conditioned to respond to the questions whenever it's always asked. Whether you ask to see or whether you ask to anybody, people will try to answer you. Let me tell you guys, when you answer a question, when you ask a question or when you normally have a conversation, your brain works only 25%. But the moment when you ask questions somebody they will put 75% of their brain to think about that. The moment when they do 75 percentage, they will give you maximum attention in order to answer your question and you will drive the conversation. People who ask question, they drive the conversation. The very important thing to drive recruiters and studios run behind you is ask them questions, make them really think. Because the moment if they do it automatically, they will start coming beyond you. I already asked my question. I already tell my students he ask what's your salary compensation. Ask what's the training and support system? Ask what is the role and culture? Ask what is your clear responsibilities? Ask what are the work life balance? Ask what are the training and support system and growth in the down the line five years. So these kind of questions will keep you engaged and show your enthusiasm in your interviews going forward. You know what guys, the moment. If you ask this much of questions with a very polite nature, I'm not asking you to tell rude, okay? Very soft and polite and a friendly manner. They will be more interested in you because they know that this guy is really trying to understand our company better. So he will be a perfect fit. This is very vital guys. And the fifth important thing is have the company researched it out properly using an Excel sheet which I'll share you in this podcast. If you write something about what is your learning, I'll be sharing that secret networking sheet, guys. And job recruitment sheet itself. It's a beautiful tool which me and my students really work hard in building that if you have all this information for a company, you will apply that company and you will get selected. Guys, there are more than 60 to 70 design studios available there and we are still building that Excel sheet is a live Excel sheet. And imagine you're going to get access and not for everybody. It's for few users, few listeners and you will find all the details like more than 10 to 15 different parameters of a company is there the moment when you find a studio like say Elephant Design Studio, Lollipop Design Studio, these are all the prominent design studios in India. You will find lot of what you call parameters about that company like let's say which year they started, how much people are working, what are their core portfolio, what is their work nature, what is the salary compensation, what is the market value they have. So the moment, if you have so much of research data beyond that company that the knowledge in which you attend the interview will be profoundly hi. And they will be really amazed with the detail what you have about the company and they will automatically give you a job and offer because you are in that zone. Okay? So it's very important guys. See remember always it's all 80 percentage mindset 20 percentage only skill set. You need to have your mission, your vision, your attitude, your goals. Then automatically your answers will be so different guys. Okay? And the last important thing is please send applications based on the research data what you have in your Excel sheet and have a follow up an item. Have a follow up and iterate it. Have a follow up and iterate it I told you three times because if you're not following up with someone to close a salary negotiation, to get a job offer or to get a particular trainings done or maybe to get a particular what do you call onboarding experience or onboarding interviews or anything, nobody will give you call or email to get back to you guys because people are busy in their own work if you ask and if you follow up only certain things you will get. Okay, so this is the strategies how you can make design recruiters run behind you rather than trying first this rather than trying to impress them. Go and find out someone who is really looking for you. Okay, flip your mindset, rate yourself and rate the company 0 to 10 and find out where you are and find out those companies first to improve slowly, slowly you can find out the other skills which you are lagging and you can work on it and then you can go and apply for those companies also later after you equip that skills. Okay, the third important thing is have a good confidence. Extraordinary confidence will come when you have a clear written goals and having end in mind technique, have a power of asking questions, have an excel sheet and track all the parameters of your company and have this data research done before going for an interview and you will see people will tend to give you lot of attention and people will tend to give you a lot of value and they'll hire you faster because 80 percentage is mindset 20 percentage is skill set and send applications based on the excel sheet what you have and then you follow it up with them. Okay, so additionally you need to have a portfolio, you need to have online presence, have your skill set, have your advantage, whatever strength and the projects, what you did, the achievements, what you have, all these things are fine guys. But what I told you is fundamentally very important because if you work on your fundamentals automatically, everything, even if you have a little not that good portfolio or not that good resume or not that good communication, you'll be getting hired because 80 percentage is mindset 20 percentage skill set.
