Lot of people don't know the reason why it is important to buy time. When you attend a design interview, or when you involve in a recruitment process, or when you involve in a salary negotiation, or when you involve in even choosing a project, when a boss gives you tasks, or when a subordinate asks you to do something, or even in your personal relationship when somebody asks you to do something. Why do you really need time to making a decision either to say yes or no or even not say anything? The art of buying time is nobody talking about nobody really knows the importance of it. In this podcast I'm going to be giving you a great scientific facts why it is important to have a time which is there for you to facilitate a better decision. You know what the world richest person Warren Buffett tells Even before making any investments, he take 24 hours time even to say yes, even to say no. He takes that time. Even if the decision is very convincing, he takes that time and then he advises people also to take that decision after a time and then you propose it. You know what? You will know it why in this podcast guys. So take a lot of notes. Let's jump into this podcast. Welcome to yet another episode with me, Design for Change with Jagdish. Thank you for staying tuning guys and a very happy news. We are touching close to 30 countries guys and consistently a lot of listeners are coming up and we are getting a great feedback for our podcast. The engagement ratio is very high and four different countries have joined recently. France, Colombia, I don't know, I forgot the two countries names. So there are international listeners also coming and I really expect a feedback from you guys if you feel anything needs to be added in this podcast. There is a description always there in the bottom and I always welcome students or listeners to really type out. It's not like only what I say is right or this is right or that is right. It's always about having that critical thinking in our mind before taking up a decision that's called a what do you call challenging mindset of a designer. So I. I always welcome that and there is a very special information I wanted to update you that there is a new batch which we are going to enroll for our mentorship program and we're looking for only few interested students. Okay. No matter what background you are, no matter what age you are or you have a degree or no or or it doesn't matter guys. Okay. We have a only selected students for our mentorship program in this month of April and we're looking for damn interested candidates. If you wanted to really get into my mentorship program to know a lot of things about design. You wanted to get results in just 90 days. Even if you don't know anything in design, it's highly possible you can apply for this mentorship and we'll find out if you're really interested and we'll help out. We'll make sure you're getting results in 90 days. If you're already a designer, if you wanted to get a 2x or 3x salary growth again in next 90 days, you can able to do it. If you are really serious, you can write it down, guys. And we'll be helping out. You, me or my team will help out. This is a special update I've got and we do have a scholarship also for students who really deserve economic support. And we don't want to really stop any of these things because of this reason. And we can able to send, we can able to do that. What you can do is you can give your portfolio a resume or write up about why do you really deserve a scholarship for that. And we'll be helping out you in that manner. Okay. Because I can, I can understand in, in many parts of the India, students are connecting with me from different, different states. So one such reason is financial struggle is also there and people were damn interested. So some people really confuse the answer. Like they say they don't have money, but the thing is their interest will be in something else. So they say something like interest is there, but money is some, some confusing answer really comes with students. So what we did is before we take any student, we really need to talk to them. And if they genuinely needed any support in terms of challenging in time, challenging in money, challenging in anything, we'll be stepping out and helping them. Because if somebody is really interested and they will come forward to take up that help. Okay. And if you need, like if you, if you're referring someone, if you, your friends or maybe someone who is really needing this kind of a design support, you can always reach out to me because I have mentored over thousands and thousands of students and a lot of students have got results in less than 15 days, 30 days, 45 days, 2 months, 3 months. And I worked with close to 12,500 students having one on interaction. And a lot of pain points have been understood through this design for change. And in fact, in my podcast you can see there are totally 160 plus episodes which can exactly be pointed towards that. So if you're able to get that much value in this free podcast, what is the value you can get inside my program and you can very well feel that once you are having an interaction with our team to know the candidature of how we are taking it. Just to summarize, I am Jagdish, I have 8.5 years of experience, did 60 plus projects and I have worked with more than 14 to 15 different country designers and I've got one national award for a medical product what I did called numo, which is currently there in thousands of facilities in India. And I'm currently working in one of the best design studios in India for a medical product design. And I'm really passionate to help students who are really stuck. You don't need a design degree to really become a designer. You don't need experience to become a designer in this field. Okay, so both of the things are paradox now. So a lot of people think I need a degree. A lot of people think think I need an experience. Both are like, I mean it's not true. It's all your own mindset and your own thinking. And huge vacancies are coming in design field. Close to 1 lakh plus vacancies are available. You can very well do that. Okay. And yeah, enough of introduction because I wanted to feel that to tell you like if you are my listeners, you have to be definitely knowing what is update what we are doing in okay. Yes guys, so now we'll be starting this podcast out of buying time for design jobs for the designers. Let me give you a small background guys. Okay. See rushing into a decision, it activates a cognitive biases and mental shortcuts that lead to lot of errors in your career. I'll tell you, it is very much important when you attend an interview, when you are up to a salary negotiation, when you are up to a design task, or maybe when your boss is giving you any project. Studies have confirmed that bias shows people favor information confirming existing beliefs potentially leading to suboptimal design choices even when you choose a concept in your design. So taking time allows for a more systematic approach. Guys. So what happens is if you really give time, you will find a cognitive bias mitigated properly. You will have improved information processing. You will have enhanced creativity and problem solving even in your design process. So convergent thinking and focusing on best solution becomes very efficient after giving sufficient time and exploration. You know what time allows for gathering, analyzing more data. Research by Payne Johnson shows that. Okay, so it shows that increased decision making leads to a better choices when information complexity is very high. So it is crucial for a designer to Use that user research, competitor analysis and trend in order to make a decision. Even if you're doing a research for the company, you have to be more specific. You need to understand why that company is suitable for you. You need to take time even to attend interview or even to apply. Don't just open some LinkedIn profile and then start applying randomly. Guys, it's like going for a blind date. Mean you know what? There is no possibility that you will get a good boy or a girl or right? So you need to do some understanding to do some research. You need to get a clear data on what is this company, what is my skill, how it's going to be matched and if you are attending interview, even if they give design tasks, don't just do like a. What you call people, work for the design task like a donkey. Guys, be smart, okay? Be smart. Like why is this a task given what is this company about? Is it really fitting for my role? Am I really excited to join this company? And is the salary better? Is the training and support system better? Is the work culture better? Then go and attend the task. Then you attend the task. Then you are going into the next phases of the interview successfully going and spending a wrong time with the wrong industry. It's going to be ultimate waste for you, right? So you need to get this clarity. Guys. You know what? While specific data on design projects is hard to find, let me give you one good study which is showing that, okay? A study by Karmakar Upali showed that company with longer decision making process had a better financial performance. I told you, Warren Buffett takes better financial investment and they make a beautiful decision. Guys. That's why he's the number one person, the richest person and he has more than seven to eight different what you call streams of passive and active and residual and all the type of incomes he has because of the way in which he takes the decision. It's not about the money, what you earn, it's about how you manage that using your thinking process. You can read a book called Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kaneyman. Okay, I've not read this book but I've got a great feedback about this book. One of my mentor has really pointed out this is a really amazing book. If you wanted to really think fast and slow when you wanted to take a decision and how our brain really works there, okay, you can read about it. It's a beautiful book. To understand why it is important to buy some time before going for any discussion, I'll tell you one more interesting thing. One of My student recently did a salary negotiation and he was like, bro, Jagdish, this is really good. I'll take this salary. I said wait, even if it's a low salary, even if it's a high salary, you don't have to say yes or no at that point of time. Guys, there are reason for it. Okay, I'll tell you, ask for 24 hours time. I'll tell you what is the benefit for it. First is you will get a relaxation feel. Don't just have a fear of missing out. Guys. People call it as like you know, fear of missing out. I don't know, fomo something they call it doesn't matter. Okay, you have to be first, have that abundance mindset. There are huge opportunities even if you leave this job. Just be relaxed. If you're relaxed and thinking clearly, you will find a greater opportunity. Guys, people who really push like let's say, hey Jagdish, you need to give the salary offer today. If some recruiter is saying hey, you need to sign off the offer today, don't just accept that kind of an offers. That HR or that company is not really a proven or worth or it's not going to be a mature decision for you. Ask an HR. Hey, I need 24 hours time to decide. Can I get back to you on the same time tomorrow? If that person is saying yes, he's really mature. He's respecting your decision because it's ultimately your decision, guys, right? You're going to spend a lot of time in your office more than your house, honestly speaking. So you have to take some time before you decide. You have to think and reflect. You need to consult with your seniors, you need to consult with your mentors. You need to do a market research. Even if they say something like a huge salary first go and analyze it. Go and understand. Okay? If somebody is really offering me this much salary, are they really expecting me something more? We have to go and read these roles and responsibilities, understand their terms and conditions before signing up the contract or signing up the offer or go and understand the work culture and the ethics and the number of hours what they put in. Maybe it's a trap. You could be really trapped in for 16 to 18 hours in a very stressful situation wherein you will be paid but you will not be really happy in that job. So that's why this kind of a time taking gives you the time to reflect back to you. Okay guys, okay, let me give you another understanding. Okay? Jagdish, what if they really push me? Okay, tell them clearly it's, it's a very important career decision, Mr. HR. So please give me 24 hours time. If not ask them at least one hour of time. In that time you can talk to your mentors or your seniors or to do a research because without thinking, nobody gives the decision. Guys, if you give that no, I mean you are half baked. The company will not really respect you that much. But the moment when you ask 24 hours time, the way in which you get a respect is different. Trust me guys, in that moment, students will not be having this clarity, okay? Everybody will be in the verge of like somebody is after them. Somebody will be like, hey, the HR is behind me Jagdish. No it's not. You are thinking that somebody is behind. So ask that time. Ask that clarity. Ask that what you call. I mean, have that courage to really ask it. You know what guys, Buying time doesn't mean it's an endless delay. So set a clear deadline and a milestone for the HR or some communication to really tell. Even if your boss comes and give a worst project, don't just say no. Impulsive, don't be that impulsive guy. Okay, you know what guys, I've learned from one of my mentor. I mean he's not my mentor, but I've learned from this guy. Okay, I'm not following his things and all. I have only few mentors, but this guy, I was, I was listening to a podcast and one thing really hit me hard, okay, his name is Lawrence Tidos or something. Okay, He's a bald headed guy. I don't know, like I listened to his 10 minutes video or something audio. He said one thing before deciding anything. Like let's say if you wanted to scold somebody or if you wanted to really get angry on somebody or, or if you really wanted to price somebody or if you really wanted to do anything before, just give one second time. I mean he is very simple. I mean he, you know, he says one second. Okay, let's say if somebody is offering you, like you are applying for 10, you're already getting 10 LPA and you're expecting 15 LPA. Okay, like somebody is offering you 25 LPA. Again, don't just, just say yes. Think for a second and then say whatever you feel. Can I tell you guys, if you give that one second, your real better answer will come. Rather than impulsive telling that, hey, I'm okay sir, so when am I joining? Don't ask like that. And then neither do I. Don't ask like, hey, you're offering me 25 LPA. But I've applied for 15 LPA. That's also a dangerous thing to ask. So and also in another situation where you can find something like the salary slip, what they've shared or the offer letter, what they've shared. Sometimes they have to quoted a gross salary, sometimes they would have given a pace compensation also added to the total, what do you call lpa. And then they would have not added some perks or benefits or PF or something. So you need some time to review all these things if any error is there or you need to ask something like sir, can you give more details on this thing or sir can you give me just more details on which location I'll be joining. Like let's say if they're posting you in Bangalore or Mumbai or something, it's no point like you are getting 25 to 30 percentage hike. Because all this hike will go in your cost of living, your rent, your food and your transportation, shift and everything. So ask them, can I get a relocation bonus? So to analyze all these things, you need some time. Guys, people take an impulsive decision and they make a terrible mistake because of this reason, right? And that's why this is very very crucial. Particularly to ask whom I'll be reporting, what kind of project duration will it be, what are the work nature, what is the kind of what you call projects are we getting? What is the down the line growth for me for at least two to three years. And in this salary package I'm not seeing any kind of a medical benefits. Do I get that separately or is it really inclusive? To really work on all these things will only make you clear and concisely to arrive a very good decision for you. If you're not able to do it, you will make an impulsive decision wrong. So be very what you call give that time time and time, time, time. Buying time is one of the beautiful thing people don't really get it. Guys, I've told you a lot of psychological facts and everything, right? So get this. If you're not able to what you call understand this, leave it. It's okay. Just remember one thing. Give one second before you answer anything. You know what guys, you will definitely find a better way to even accept a proposal or to reject a proposal or to even say a yes or no to your boss. You know, after you do a little research. Boss, can I just get it back to you after a hour or maybe 24 hours and then you research about the project. Maybe the project will seem very surface level waste or this that but if you really go and research it out, you'll find there is a huge scope in the market because of this kind of a line of project. Maybe it'll add a great thing in your portfolio. And then you say yes to your boss. Yes. I'm excited to take this. Your boss will be surprised. Hey, wow. Nobody has accepted Jagdish. Why did you accept? Then you can justify this a great thing, sir, it's. It's coming up in the market. I'm really excited to take it up a challenge and do it. And you know what? You will really excel in that project like anything. So you will have a great clarity guys, when you give some time. So neurologically decision making is really prudent. Let me give you a neurological background because I really like neuroscience. Everything what we do is connected to that. Okay. Brain activity. So research in neuroscience shows that brain needs time to process information and weigh options effectively rushed decisions can make a cognitive bias and errors. Psychological studies indicate that decision fatigue sets in when we take too much decision in a shorter span of time leading to a bad poor judgment. Guys, you know behavioral economics field. It highlights importance of avoiding impulsive decisions. Nobel laureate Daniel K. Man's work is actually beautiful. That's why I told you read that book thinking fast and slow. I'll put the book name in this description. You can do it and you will have a much more clarity. Harvard Business Review published that individuals who were given time to deliberately take time before making decisions made better choices that lead to a greater long term satisfaction. Stanford research found that Stanford University demonstrated that participants were pressurized to make quicker decision are more likely to make errors compared to the time of luxury. National Academy of Science study shows that delaying decisions can lead to more accurate predictions and better outcomes. Can I tell you guys, Apple design process is a meticulous design process. They involve lot of extensive prototype and testing and iteration. That's why guys their product are exceptionally high. They are like a benchmarked, you know, similar to Apple in automotive industry. Toyota is called the best in class. They said the benchmark like Toyota production system, Toyota quality management system. It's a Toyota of the automobile they call same like Apple for the electronics, right? So Toyota approach to manufacturing emphasizes the continuous improvement a very careful decision making empowering employees to really halt production to address certain quality issues. Toyota ensures the decision making is not in a rushed manner with a very supervised, superior time based process based approach. They have, you know, NASA's challenge disaster. The challenge disaster that serves a cautionary tale about a consequence of rushing decision. NASA engineers paced pressure during the situation of launching. You know what, despite this concern about these O rings leading to a tragic outcome. You know what? There was a big disaster happened because of this O ring which which led to a tragic outcome. You can google that. It's a big article. You can read why it has happened. So this case underscores the importance of thorough deliberation and risk assessment to take time before consenting to any decision making. I hope you would have got a clarity guys, you will. You will never be ahead in your life if you're rushing something fast. So buy time. Buy time before saying yes before saying no. Think for that one second. Getting impulsive. I hope this podcast would have given you a great understanding. Guys, I've given you a very powerful tool. Just reflect on it. Okay? We'll see you in another episode. Take care. Bye bye guys.
