Jagadeesh P breaks down what product designers, UI/UX designers, and UX researchers actually earn in India and globally. Salary varies by skill set, location, industry, and experience. He also discusses how mentorship can help you move up.
What is this average salary for a product designer in India? Okay, again it's a very generic question. Let's go very specific in this podcast. Let it be product designer or UI UX designer or UX researcher. I have some data. It doesn't mean this is only salary which has been given for a company to company for a startup to startup for an MSME to MSME for a core product design studio to studio. It differs in a larger scale, guys. Again, it depends on your skill set, it depends on how you are projecting it and it depends on the job vacancies, what they have and the value proposition what that company is giving. Okay, so this is all the variables which you will need to understand. But have these figures in mind. It's good to really understand this. Okay, let me tell you guys, from an average of 6 LPA to 25 LPA, product designers get an average. Okay? There are some people who get 50, 60 LPA also there are some people who get even less also. I've seen people who are getting 10,000 per month. Also as a UI UX designer, can you believe you can go to a what you call website called ambitionbox.com you can find out that particularly UI UX designers are very similar to product designers range. Okay? It's not a much difference. So understand this. UX researchers are crazily paid guys. You know, the average salary is somewhere around what you call 6 to 14 LPA. Okay, you can find that. And the sole product designers are sometimes even getting more. Okay, that can vary based on their experience and other things. But sole product designer really gets huge guys. Let me tell you why. Because as a product designer you see a whole product lifecycle management. In a nutshell, UI plays a small role, UX plays a small role. So you need to get this. But on a contrary, a lot of people really ask me, hey, what's the salary of a graphic designer? It's really less guys. It's 3 to 8 lpa. Why? Because the overall value proposition, what you can bring to the table is what determines your take home salary, whatever you have. Graphic designers, if they really do a role well, if they really take a new brand identity or they need to create a new product through their visual language, perhaps those graphic designers will be paid more. They will be paid really crazy more than a product designer also. But largely those graphic designers are very, very less guys. People think that doing Photoshop is graphic design. People think that doing some canva design is called graphic design. That's completely a very limited, narrow thinking. What they Have Okay. That's what is the scope in India, what we have. But you can really go and understand in a global level guys how it is important. See a product Designer gets around $11,000 to $59,000 per year. That's close to 40 lpa in Indian money. Okay. In a global level I'm saying it's A levels. FYI provides this global perspective. You can read that. I'll paste that link also guys, you can have that understanding as well. Okay. So you can do one thing. Considering your experience, considering your location, wherever you're located. Let's say Bangalore, Hyderabad or top tier 1 type of cities and the industry what you're really going to like. Let's say are you going to AI industry? Are you going to machine learning industry? Are you going to what you call automotive industry? Are you going to industrial sectors, Production manufacturing? Have your skills and portfolio mapped according to it. Then you will see how much amount of salaries you can able to do it. I'll give you one resource. You can go through a website called Pay scale, Glass Dose Design jobs, UX Collective Design Job boards. Okay. Please make a note of it. And don't worry, I'll be pasting in the link description as well. Design community reports. This kind of things will give you lot of salary insights. Particularly Payscale is a very good what do you call what you call site where you can find good insight about salaries. Okay and let me give you some insights from the indeed report guys. Okay. See there are a lot of salaries which is a UI UX designer and a product designer really gets. But let me quote you. In fact a product designer and a UI UX designer sometimes are somewhere what you call nearly matching the role of a similar what you call a mechanical designer or somewhere. But solely when you take a digital industry solely when you take they are the only product designers. According to a Glassdoor report, average salary of a product designer in India is somewhere around 13lpa. Okay, this is a report by Glassdoor Again I told you right? It all depends on the target market. What they have taken and the skills, what they've had and the experience what they brought to the table. But there is a huge amount of scope guys somewhere around 6 to 13 to 14 LPA which you can definitely get Being a product designer how you wanted a project. Okay see there is an additional compensation also like say 1 lakh close to rupees of bonus you will get as a product designer. And so including that the range will be somewhere around 12 to 14 LPS. So according to ambition box. Also I've told you already the salary range and according to Glassdoor also I've given you a range so A levels FY. FYI the average total composition for product designer is around 2 lakh. That's a total extra amount what they give. And Google is one of the highest paying company guys with average salary of 40 LP. So this is also one interesting thing. Okay, you can note down it and Microsoft really pays a very huge amount of salary. Some. Some of my friends were really working there and some of my friends are working in Amazon. Amazon also really pays huge. Again, these are all the extreme end of the curve. Okay, I'm just talking about the average pay scale and I told you on this extreme there are people who get 10,000 per month also. So what do you really understand by this? People are really valued Based on the value proportion, what you can bring to the table the moment. If you're able to position yourself, your skills, your relevant experience and have you wanted to really see yourself in that company. The kind of salaries, what you're going to get, it depends on that. Okay again there is one more variable for it. If you're in a Bangalore, maybe the average salary would be 11 lpa. If you're in a Haryana Gurgaon 8 to 9 lpa. If you're in Chennai it's a little less 7 lpa. Pune Maharashtra 7 to 7.5 lp Hyderabad 6.46 lp. Again it is very crucial based on the region also as I rightly mentioned. Okay, so you need to get this clarity guys. You know there are many professionals who work from home. There are many professionals who do a hybrid job. There are many professionals who come home may income office directly. So all these things are put together considered in this variable. It's not about the average salary. It's not about the market value, what they have if you ask me. Honestly guys, this podcast is to give you some basic understanding. But what it really matters is what is your current skill, what you have. Can you measure it 0 to 10? Pause this podcast and do it guys. I'm telling you this is what is really going to make a difference. Hearing out to this podcast till now, statistics understanding is not going to make a big difference. That's all just an information knowledge. Okay, so pause this podcast and write out how much level of skill you have out of 0 to 10, 10 being maximum. Second, write about how much you have a great communication in order to project your skills properly. By introducing yourself, explaining about your project, telling about your skills honestly write it down third is how much do you think in this average scale what people can pay you. Then you will be able to satisfy yourself. Is it 6 lpa? 10 lpa? 20 lpa? Write it down. If you're able to come up with these three answers, guys, you will itself have a reality in front of you. And from there you ask a question. How do I improve my scale to 7 to 8? How do I improve my scale to 8 to 10? How do I improve my salaries from 10 LPA to 25 LPA? If you're really asking quality question, you will get quality answers in your life. You will start seeing your circumstances changing, your reality changing. You'll start seeing people around you. You'll start things coming around you to help you out to reach that goal. My mentor, John demartini, he always asks the quality of the questions. What you ask in your life determines the quality of your overall life and your future. Okay? So it's very important to ask this. That's why I want to close this podcast with making you ask this three question. Okay, let me repeat. You guys measure your scale of skills, what you have first. Second is how much salary you are thinking you can able to get right in an lp. Third is you can able to write how effective you are and able to communicate your skills and your experience and the value proposition what you have through your design knowledge to tell to people clearly. If you measure this three scale and if you really wanted to improve, I have an opportunity for you guys. You can jump into my mentorship program where I can help you out to get this done in less than three months. There are students who got even more than that. There are students who got 85,000 per month. There are students who got 10 to 12 LPA. Recently one of my students got 13.5 LPA. What you call salaries and all these things. Guys. Okay, to close this podcast, one last story. One of my student who was in a different field, okay. He wants to change the different domain into a different design. So you know, he was struggling a lot. I asked him a lot of quality questions. And by the way, he's a mechanical engineer too. And now he's transitioning into the ui. So the kind of grind what I did with him asking a lot of questions. Why? Why you wanted to become a designer? What is a specific reason? What is your clear goal? So that made him really trigger a lot of actions and in very short span of time he get into that 3x. This guy is earning 3x salary. Compared to the earlier field, it's no way. Compared to design, he's working in a relatively new field. That is the power of asking question. And if you are into my community, you can even talk to those kind of people and have a network. Okay, thank you so much guys. Take care. All the best. Bye bye.
