Jagadeesh P breaks down engineering design, product design, and UI/UX design: what each one actually is, who cares about it, and what each produces. He explains why the three are different jobs with different mindsets, not just different names for the same work.
The big difference between an engineering design, product design and a UI UX design is your mindset. Okay, let me begin this podcast like that because I'm going to be giving you five or six different parameters about each of this. Don't worry, I'll be clarifying the major understanding and I'll be giving you some important statistics. Which field has a different, different scope and how you can able to play. There are a lot of people even in my program who come from engineering to design, who come from graphic design to design, product design, who come from UI design to UX design, who come from UI UX design and they wanted to go to product design. This podcast is giving you a crystal clear clarity and I'm not doubting that. But majorly, if you really want to understand the differences, it's all come from your mindset. What you see, see, nobody is bigger or nobody smaller here. I've seen both ends. I'm an Engineer also for 5 years and I worked as a design intern, I worked as a product designer and I worked as a senior product designer. I'm a technical lead. So I've seen the product managers working with them. I've seen CEOs, I've seen functional strategic initiative heads and I've worked in center of excellence teams. Everybody has a different notion towards understanding what a designer role is. Everybody has an understanding in design side, what an engineering role does, what a testing guide us, what a programmer does, what a developer does. So listen it out very carefully guys. Okay, I'm going to be giving you 5 clarity. Like let's say the first clarity is focus. Let's understand how engineering guy perceives this. Okay, the main focus of engineering guys to make the functionality and feasibility. Let's say if he is making a software development, let's say if he's developing an engine, let's say if he's developing a chassis, his major, major objective is to focus on functionality feasibility. Functionality feasibility. Okay? I mean you can able to repeat this point by just going back to this podcast because you will not get a clarity. That's why I asked you. You can take notes as well. Okay, product designer, focus on user needs and business goal. Okay? User needs could be color, material or maybe the functional requirements and it includes carryability, portability, serviceability, so all these things could be available. The third is UI UX designer's major focus is user experience and how well and efficiently he can able to use, which is ergonomics, usability. Okay, so user experience comes from aesthetics, forms, everything, touch and feel, sound. The Graphics, everything. So the very first point is guys, the focus of engineer is functional and feasibility. And the product designer is user needs and business goals. UI UX designer is user experience and usability. Okay, I'll tell you guys, product designers really get paid more. The reason being they take the holistic view of the product design process. Which has a UI UX also which has a product particulars also which has a interface also which has other experience elements also which has the end to end digital, physical products, everything as well. Okay, so you need to get a clarity, guys. People who add a massive value, they'll get a massive salary. Simple. It's as simple as that. Nothing, nobody is big here, small here. I already mentioned second, let's compare with the parameter of input. Okay, so an engineering guy gets an input of problem statement, technical specification from the marketing requirement, sales requirement or a specification sheet. Whereas a product designer gets user research. He does a market analysis. He understands the real need of the product and how business can able to cater this need. Very, very important, guys. Okay, you can go back and listen carefully. UI UX designers input is based on user Persona, user journey mapping, user research, primary, research secondary. You go much detail into it. Okay, so this is also very much similar to a product design. I would say in fact 99.9%. The third important parameter which I will compare is output. What kind of an output? Engineering guide us. They give prototypes, engineering drawings, simulations, production samples. Fine. Product designer does a kind of story, narrative, roadmaps, product mock ups even. They do prototyping, they do testing even. I am a product designer. I have designed a lot of products to test it out in the market to make a feedback to the user. So it's pretty much the same. Okay, but the physical products, mockups and wireframes will not come for additional products may come, let's say UI UX designer. They give output in terms of wireframes, prototypes, style guides, design systems. So be very clear on that, guys. The fourth important parameter which I'll compare is iterations. See, engineering people does lot of iteration based on the technical constraint. Product designers does iteration based on user feedback. Very, very important. And business goals because they take care of the user needs, right? We cannot stop the engineering process because they have a technical constraint. They're working. Engineering does the job super. But you have to do the job like let's say if some software is crashing, let's say if the testing is not giving you prompt results. So engineering people will do that testing again until it gets validated, until the technical parameter gets Validated. But as a product designer, you have to really draw a mark. Whether customer gets satisfaction or not, whether the business goals is met or not, whether the profit is coming or not. Right? So UI UX designers again does the same thing. Based on testing and usability evaluation parameters, they check each and every software, app or digital products, whatever they are designing for. The fifth important element is stakeholders. See here. Engineers, scientists, researchers, ethnographers. A lot of people will be there in product designers. Product designers, product managers, strategic product managers and what you call coe heads like let's say center of excellence who drive the strategic innovations. And senior product designers. And all these people will be in product designers starting from lower to hierarchy. Again, same goes for engineering also from lower to hierarchy, but the role will be different. Sometimes marketers and sales people also come into the product design process and understand it. Okay, UI UX designer. It's called UI Designer. UX Designer. UI UX designer, UI UX developers. Lot of things will be there. So based on this five understanding, let me give you which field has this kind of a potential in the market. Okay, I'll tell you about all the fields. Don't worry. See, design industry is expected to grow by 8 percentage every single year. 8 to 10 percentage average it grows. It's a report by Bureau of Labor statistics. It's a stat. So by 2030 it will increase every year. It will improve every year by 8 to 10 percentage user experience. Design is one of the fastest growing occupation with A projected growth of 33 percentage by BLS Statistics. This also 2030 report. Strong design skills can significantly impact on product success. What does it mean? Design nurse are really required. Design skills are really required in the market. So groom yourself as a designer and start getting your career. If you want to go into engineering, that's okay. If you want to go into product design, that's okay. If you want to go into UI UX design, that's okay. Whatever you want, understand these numbers and statistics and decide your career. Guys, don't be impulsive on choosing some random careers. Just take that. Okay, so be careful about it. A lot of people have an impulsive decision. They go this that understand the numbers statistics. Because numbers will not lie. People can lie. Numbers will not lie. If you understand it properly, strong design skills can significantly impact a product success. Studies showed good UX can increase conversion rate up to 400%. Design thinking human centered approach as increasingly becoming famous across industry. Guys, you need to get this clarity. It's one of my favorite part. Okay, so the holistic design Approach is very important whether you are an engineer, guys. It doesn't mean that you don't have to come to product design if you are a UI UX designer. It doesn't mean you have to go and sit with your testing guy, engineering guy or software guy. It's very, very vital to understand each and every other pain point. That's how you can able to holistically draw a design process. You have to work with marketers, researchers, salespeople to understand the job market and trend, to understand what is really a user centered design. Then and only you can able to have a more clarity because iteration will happen, guys. Based on that you need to keep on working in your product design or else it will become a big issue, right? So it's very, very important. In fact, the salaries in UI UX design, the median annual wage of a Web developer was US$77,000 in May 2020. Senior UX designer or those with specialized skills can earn significantly higher than this salaries. So a good UI UX design can significantly impact business success. A research by Forrester Consulting found that every dollar invested in UX design design brings in between 2 to $100 in return. Return on investment is 100x. So what are you waiting for? Now you're getting some clarity about what is the design process in the aspect of focus, the inputs, what they get, the output, what they deliver, the iterations, the stakeholders. So go and take action now guys. If you decide if you want to become a product designer, I would highly, highly recommend you jump into my program and just experience it. Experience it for a week. We do have a refund policy also because some people may not have it, some people may have a different opinion. They'll be very getting excited by this podcast. They'll be coming into the program and then their expectation will be like hey Jagdish, I want to become a UI designer. That's okay. I just tell them okay, this is not a UI program. This is a UI UX product design program. I cover holistically. So that's okay. Just come and experience it. And if it really suits you, I would highly, highly recommend you join my program.
